IS IT TOO LATE?
The Earth is in danger. Turn on the TV, and you see pictures of garbage and dead fish on the
beach. Open a newspaper and you read that the earth is getting too hot. Listen to the radio, and
you hear that our cities are dying from polluted air.
In the early 1990s, people all over the world were nervous. They hoped it wasnt too late to
clean up the Earths air and water. It was time to do something. They knew they had to change,
and they made some decisions. For example, before the year 2001, 61 countries are going to
stop making CFCs. CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) are used in things like spray cans and
refrigerators, and they hurt the ozone layer. The ozone layer is very important because it
protects the Earth from the sun.
People who care about the Earth also worry about polystyrene, a kind of plastic in egg cartons
and drinking cups. Polystyrene is a problem because it sometimes has CFCs; it is also nonbiodegradable that means it just wont go away. Many fast-food restaurants dont use
polystyrene anymore.
Some experts think young people can do a lot to save our planet. Seven years ago, the river
near a school in Washington was full of oil and garbage. All the fish and plants died. The
students cleaned up all the garbage and planted new trees and plants. Then they put healthy
fish into the river. Thanks to the students, the river is now a popular place to swim and fish.
What can you do to save our home the Earth?
