Short Programme in Fundamentals of Human Resources


DESCRIPTION
The programme is designed to help the aspirant personnel officer meet the demands and challenges of this
important function. Greater productivity is becoming increasingly dependent upon improved people performance.
Proper selection, induction, training and communication are essential skills for HR personnel. This programme is
suitable for newcomers to the field of human resources, as well as those who require knowledge of human resource
practices.

PROGRAMME OUTLINE
Personnel Activities and Functions:
This module aims at educating the learner about
aspects regarding human resources management and
its application in the South African context. Important
aspects of job analysis and design, various HR
functions (recruitment and selection, placement and
induction, performance management, compensation,
motivation, leadership, and communication) are
discussed in detail. The importance of HR planning,
the consideration of group dynamics and information
systems is explored.

Introduction to the personnel function
Productivity and motivation
Recruitment, selection and induction
Assessment and improvement of performance
Compensation, health and safety
Dismissal, redundancy and retirement
Training:
This module aims at educating the learner about the
critical aspects to consider in training and development
within
South
African
organisations.
Various
environmental factors are explored, as well as specific
issues relevant to the SA training environment e.g.
HIV/AIDS. The current legislation is explored, along
with the requirements of the national skills strategy
and its current importance in SA.
Management
aspects of the training function are discussed, along
with the importance of administering training.
Theoretical and practical aspects of the training cycle
are investigated.

Labour Relations:
This module aims at educating the learner about
aspects regarding labour relations and labour law in
South Africa. Important aspects of labour law and
dispute resolution, collective bargaining and industrial
action are highlighted. Future prospects for labour
relations in South Africa as well as labour relations and
the individual employee and employer are also
discussed in this module.

TYPE OF PROGRAMME

Part-time

Damelin Short Programme*


Short Programmes upgrade skills and knowledge to ensure success in a chosen field of learning, but are not credit
bearing.

DURATION

The programme duration is 60 hours and tuition is face-to-face. Each Damelin campus has a different tuition
schedule. Programmes are offered during the week, in the evenings, or on Saturdays. Please enquire at your
campus.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge, comprehension and application of English and Mathematics at Grade 11 or equivalent.

LEARNER MATERIAL
All books are included in the tuition fee.

PRICING

Enquire at your nearest Damelin campus for a current programme pricelist.

ADDITIONAL COSTS
There are no additional costs payable for this programme.

ASSESSMENT
An integrated assessment approach, using both formative and summative methods of assessments, is used.
Learners must be prepared to allocate additional time every week to complete research projects, assignments,
tasks or tests as required.

CERTIFICATION

On successful completion of the programme, the learner will receive the Damelin Short Programme in
Fundamentals of Human Resources Certificate.
