T h e Pa s t o r s N o t e s
The passage of time is both an enemy and an ally. An enemy in that many of the pleasures of life are
fleeting, and fade quickly into the past. But an ally in that each day is a new creation (Today is the day
the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it - Psalm 118:24) - and we are given the opportunity to
embrace more fully the joys and challenges of life.
Jesus said that he came that we would have abundant life - not when we die and go to heaven, but right
in the midst of the muck and marvel of everyday life. As we stand at the beginning of a new year, here
are some of the ways I hope to live into Gods gift of abundant life:
1. Practice gratitude. I find the best way to start the day is to begin with prayers of gratitude. And one of
the best ways to get out of a funk is to stop and consider the good God has given me and thank him for it.
2. Paying attention. When Im focused on a task or have something on my mind I can walk right past
people without hardly noticing them. The resolve to pay attention disciplines me to slow down and redirect my attention towards the people I encounter and deal with them as children of God - listening carefully, being considerate and trying to be a gracious, loving presence. Quiet dinner times with Susan prove
to be an important time both to pay attention to one another, and to the gift of food before us.
3. Guarding my mind. Paul counsels us that whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just,
whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these
things. We dont have control over what flits into our minds from the subconscious, but we do have
control over what we watch and read, and what thoughts we allow to stay in our heads. One of my worst
habits is letting the negativity of the past leach into the present and destroy my joy. I want to do better.
4. Meditate. Prayer is not talking at God; its a conversation with God. I find sitting in quiet before the
Lord is one of the richest times of my day. And I think God speaks to me during these times of silence bringing to mind a person who needs some love and compassion, or an important task I overlooked. God
also gives me a deep sense of his presence and love that quells my anxieties and brings me joy. Its hard
to shut off the mind, but when I do and just sit before the Lord, its wonderful.
Martin Luther once said that Jesus Christ willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance. This
means that every day we try to redirect our minds and hearts towards God - not because he wants groveling submission, but because he wills abundant life for us. These are some of the ways I hope to find that
depth of life. May 2015 be a year of abundant life for us all.

Church Family
Thank you....
To Bill & Trena Oyler
A very special thank you to you both for the gift
box of oranges that you gave to the staff for Christmas. We deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness and
love.
God bless you,
Pastor Scott, Helen, Deb, Sandy,
Dani, Erin, Ron, and Bertie
Dear Central Family,
Thank you for the beautiful flowers from the
church delivered by my daughter Dale. God bless
you!
Sincerely, Dorothy Burkholder
Thank you to everyone who gave their time to
ring bells for the Salvation Army. Especially Julia
Super, Drew Mellott, Gracie Mellott and Nate and
Abbie Dalton. You collected $603.91 for those in
need. Thank you for thinking about others in our
community.
God bless, Bill McKelvie
I would like to thank Helen Wingert, Selma
Thomson, and everyone who donated to the memorial for John Wingert and to the memorial for Alma
Bender. Your generosity has raised the Casavant
Organ in the Sanctuary to a new level to glorifying
God. When I hear it, my heart leaps for joy!
Thomas Diehl
Note: If you would like to memorialize family or
friends, you may do so by contacting the Memorial
Fund Team at Central Presbyterian Church,
40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg PA 17201.
I want to thank the church for the monetary gift presented to me on December 21st. My main reason for
accepting the position of Treasurer was out of love
for the people and my concern for the church. It
was a pleasure working with all who became involved in this adventure and I want to thank them
for supporting me for so many years. Its been
great and again I thank you.
Yours in Christ, Gary Geiman

The Deacons wish to thank the congregation for the

many donations for the Thanksgiving Baskets. This
year we were able to feed 65 families comprised of
311 people. We especially wish to thank Dave Bender
for the use of his box truck on Saturday morning and
again on Monday Morning to transport the food
items to Central Presbyterian Church. Dave also
provided each family with a bag of potatoes. Again,
we thank all of you for the generous contributions.
Here are just a few of the many cards of thanks received by the families you helped:
Thank you so much for the wonderful Thanksgiving
meal for my family. My kids (teenagers) loved it all.
Thank you again & God bless. Love the Dent Family
Dearest Central Presbyterian Church,

Thanksgiving. May God blesses you all. Jesus loves
you all and God loves you all.

one without your help. Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year!
Bernadette Lonzo and Sarah Lonzo
The Franklin County Children and Youth Service
would like to thank the members of the Central Presbyterian Church for Thanksgiving Food Baskets provided to the agency this past November. All of the
baskets were given to local needy families with whom
our agency works; and, were very much appreciated
by these families. Your gift made their Thanksgiving
a happier holiday. Thank you very much for your
thoughtfulness and generosity.
Sincerely, D.N. Amsley, Director of FCCYS

YOUTH
GROUP

YOUTH and CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP

Happy New Year!

I love new beginnings. I think about our Lord and how perfect He is, how wonderful, how vast, how marvelous. And
then I think about me and how UNperfect I am. Moments
of truth like that fill me with eternal gratitude that I serve a
God who provides new mercies every morning. I pray that in 2015, we celebrate this grace-filled
life with joy and thanks, even on the hard days, because yes the Times Square ball only drops
once a year, but the Holy Spirit is fighting for us every minute of every day, and THAT is a gift.
We are not limited to just one fresh start; in reality, we have an endless supply of them because
we are in relationship with a limitless Savior! I praise God for all of you in this church family and
I pray that you are encouraged to take a risk for the glory of the Kingdom of heaven this year.
Youre worth it! Our King is worth it! Chambersburg is worth it. Lets go get em.
Love and prayers, erin
