THEORY :

Cables used in electrical circuits are of many types but all consist of the following main parts :
Conductor
Any material which is allow the free passage of an electric current is known as a
conductor. Conducting materials vary in the degree to which they can conduct electricity.
Insulator
Mechanical protection

1.1

Married joint in 3/029 Vulcanized India-rubber Insulated (V.R.I) and braided cable
The married joint is an electrical joint used for joining multi-strand cables. The wires are

unstranded, then interlaced with the wires of the other cable, and then married (twisted)
together before finally being soldered. To joint small wires of a single strand, the two ends
are stripped of the protecting and insulating material to a length of about 2 inches each. The
copper is thoroughly cleaned by scraping or rubbing with fine emery cloth, and the two ends
are twisted together. The joint is then insulated by binding the stripped wire with two layers
of pure rubber strip, and finally protected by a layer of prepared tape stuck on by means of
rubber solution.
Materials : 3/029 taped and braided cable

Diagram :

PROCEDURE :
1. The cable have been divided into two equal lengths and removed the tape, braid and
insulation from one end of each length of cable to leave 3 of exposed conductor.
2. Tape have been further removed and braid to expose half in of insulation.
3. Ensured that there are no particles of rubber adhering to bared tinned copper strands.
4. The conductors have been twisted tightly together in the direction of the lay of the cable
for 1 in leaving 2 in. splayed out.
5. The splayed have been interleaved out strands of the cables .
6. The strands of the right hand cable have been hold down along the left hand cable, and
wrapped the three strands of the left hand cable neatly around the right hand cable half a
turn at a time.
7. The strands of the right hand cable have been wrapped neatly around the left hand cable.
The joint have been tightened using pliers.

1.2

Tee joint in 7/029 Vulcanized India-rubber Insulated (V.R.I) and braided cable
Tee joints is an electrical connection used for joining a branch conductor to a main

conductor where the main conductor continues beyond the branch. A joint formed when the
edge of one piece is welded to the surface of another piece at a 90 angle. A Tee joint in a

tubing application requires a curved fillet weld as the connecting wire to the curve of the
cross-member of the T
Materials : 7/029 taped and braided cable
Diagram :

PROCEDURE :
1. The cable have been divided into lengths, one in 9 in. long and the other 1 ft. 3 in.
2. Tape, braid and insulation have been removed for 3 in from the centre of the longer
length and then removed the tape and braid for a further half in. from the end
insulation.

3. Tape, braid and insulation have been removed for 3 in. from the end of the shorter

length and then removed the tape and braid for a further half in. from the end of the
insulation and cleaned the strands.
4. The conductors of the shorter length have been twisted tightly together in the

direction of the lay of the cable for 1 in.l and then divided the strands.
5. The fork of the tee piece have been butted (shorter length) against the centre of the
through piece (longer length) and carefully wrapped the three strands of tee piece
around one side of the through piece. The strands have been wrapped neatly, half a
turn at a time. The remaining four strands have been wrapped around the other side of
the through piece, tighten the joint using pliers.
1.3 To connect a flexible cord to a 13A fused plug top
Materials :
70/0076 three flexible cord
13A fused plug top
Diagram :

PROCEDURE :
1. The outer covering of the flexible cord have been removed for a suitable distance.
2. The three cores have been separated and measured off a suitable length for each by
referred to the appropriate terminal in the plug top.
3. The insulation have been removed from the end of each core and connected to the
terminals.
The followings point must be carefully observed :
That the red core is connected to the terminal marked L, the black core to the
terminal marked N, and the green core to the terminals marked E.

The flexible cord is securely held by the cord grip at the point where it enters the

plug top.
That every strand of each core is securely held by its appropriate terminal.

1.4 To connect lamp holder to a ceiling rose using a flexible cord

Materials :
B.C lamp holder
5A two-plate ceiling rose
14/0076 flexible cord
Diagram :

PROCEDURE :
1. The braiding and insulation have been removed for a suitable length from both ends of
the flexible cord.
2. The flexible cord at both ends have been separated to make connections to lamp holder
and ceiling rose.
3. One end of the flexible cord have been connected to the lamp holder.
4. The other end of the flexible cord have been connected to the ceiling rose. Once again
ensured that there are no loose strands of wire and that the flexible cord is correctly
secured by the cord gripping arrangements.

RESULT :
Married Joint

T Joint

Flexible cord (13 A fused)

DISCUSSION :
In this experiment, have conducted about several joints by electric cable and also connected
lamp holder to a ceiling rose using flexible cord by 13 A fused plug. There have several error and
also precaution. First when to make Married Joints and T Joints, must stripping cables carefully.
The cables must not be cut because can loss of conducting area and also increased resistance. For
Married Joints, to look neatly can twist the conductors slowly and one per one. To make easy is
the centre of conductor of any cables can pull out so that the other centre conductor can move in
the hole centre. After finished twist the conductor of cable, can cover the conductor with black
tape.
To connect a flexible cord to a 13 A fused plug top also followed by step. The flexible cord
(grey wire) must separate the three cores that is red core, black core and green core. Red core
(Life), black core (Neutral) and green core (Earth). The 13 A fused plug have prepare sign that
label L, N and E. So not difficult to match the cores of conductor with fused.
For lamp holder to a ceiling rose also using flexible cord. Separate the flexible cord with
connections to lamp holder and ceiling rose. Make sure that the separation of cord must in good
condition.

CONCLUSION :
Based on this experiment, can differentiate between Married Joints and T Joints. Also can
learn how Married Joints and T Joints function in electric circuit and how to connect the cable by
using this joints. Furthermore can learn and know more how to connect a flexible cord to a 13 A
fused plug top. Lastly can connect lamp holder to a ceiling rose using a flexible cord.
