Special thanks go to Christian Boyer for constructing the 22 22 FermatBoyer magic square
and to Daniel J. H. Rosenthal for drawing the Jupiter Planet Yantra. In addition, we are grateful
to Nicolas C. Ammerlaan and Thomas W. Ammerlaan for making the video, and to Oskar Maria
Baksalary, S. W. Drury, and Evelyn Matheson Styan for their help. This research was supported,
in part, by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
The handwritten image of the 14 14 Fermat magic square by Flix Vicq dAzyr (17461794)
is from MS #10556, Dpartement de manuscrits, Bibliothque nationale de France, Paris.
My sincere thanks to Christian Boyer for the image and to the Bibliothque nationale de France
(BnF) for allowing us to reproduce it here.

doubly-balanced whenever they are both row- and column-balanced, and then

We find that A4 , A8 , B4 , B8 are all doubly-balanced.

with its first three rows with a sign change, i.e.,
B6 = FB6
which we write as

the (original) Agrippa magic matrix (Fig. 3.6). We also seek a procedure for generating the sequence A6 , A10 , A14 , A18 , . . . , and we have a partial solution for this. We will use 14 14 magic
square due to Pierre de Fermat25 (c. 16011665), see [20, p. TBC (1794)], [6, p. 189], [8, p. 245], [37,
Fig. 51, p. 230], and so we will call our sequence A6 , A10 , A14 , A18 , . . . , AgrippaFermat magic
matrices.
Fermats 14 14 magic square was given in a letter by Fermat to Pre Marin Mersenne26 (1588
1648). The original copy of this letter has apparently been lost but a hand-written copy of the magic
square by Vicq dAzyr27 (17461794) is in a manuscript [20] in the Bibliothque nationale de France
(BnF) in Paris.

25Pierre de Fermat (c. 16011665) was a French lawyer at the Parlement of Toulouse, France, and an amateur
mathematician who is given credit for early developments that led to infinitesimal calculus. He is best known for
Fermats Last Theorem that no three positive integers a, b, and c can satisfy the equation an + bn = cn for any
integer value of n > 2 (Fig. 6.1, left panel).
26Pre Marin Mersenne (15881648) was a French monk, theologian, philosopher, mathematician and music theorist, often referred to as the father of acoustics. A Mersenne prime is of the form 2p 1, where p is a prime number
(Fig. 6.1, right panel).
27
Flix Vicq dAzyr (17461794) was a French physician and anatomist, the originator of comparative anatomy
and discoverer of the theory of homology in biology.
