Marys Courageous Response

n our journey as pilgrims here on earth,

we are helped to reach our union with
God by the examples and prayers of
the holy men and women who faithfully
followed the path of Christ. But above all
these saints of our faith, Mary stands out
because of her unique role in Gods plan
of salvation. She freely and courageously
responded to Gods call.
The Gospel on this fourth Sunday of
Advent narrates the story of the angel
Gabriels Annunciation to Mary about
her becoming the Mother of the Savior.
This Annunciation marked the decisive
turn of the history of salvation. The long
awaited reign of truth, justice, peace,
freedom and mercy is now sure to happen
because a woman has accepted the role
of the Mother of the Savior. How will this
happen?
What is meant by the angels words,
Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with
you. Blessed are you among women?
Mary should be happy because through
her, God would now fulfill the salvation
He promised to His people (Zep. 3:14).
Mary is highly favored as chosen from
among the many to be the Mother of the

Julieta G. Aquilo

Messiah promised to Israel. God had no

need of a woman to make a human body,
but He wanted to have a mother for His
Son, and for Mary to be really that mother,
it was necessary that God had looked upon
with greater love than He had for any other
creature.
The Lord is with you means through
Gods presence and Mary, the promise of
The Savior becomes a reality. The words
of the angel made Mary wonder. She was
bewildered but was never afraid. She did
raise a question, How can this be since I
am a virgin? She was too amazed how she,
a virgin could bear a child in her womb.
What more, this Child is no ordinary Child,
for He will be great and shall rightly be
called Son of the Most High.
So, the angel told her, The Holy Spirit
will come upon you and the power of the
Most High will overshadow you. Meaning,
she will conceive through the power of the
Holy Spirit and God will always be with her
to take care of her. She will be the bearer of
Gods Presence for the New People of God
Who made His dwelling among us (The
Angelus).
For her to know that in her response

God will strengthen and assure her of His

love and care, the angel told her that her
cousin Elizabeth has also conceived a son
in her old age, for nothing is impossible
with God. Hearing this, Mary replied, I am
the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to
me as you have said.
Marys positive response to the
Annunciation was a total acceptance of
the will of God. In this acceptance Mary
freely and courageously offered herself
as the instrument in the realization of
Gods promise of salvation to all mankind.
(Christian Life Education series: The
Church on the Move by Josefina M.
Manabnat, Ed. D., SLD, pages 288-289)
We have to know that everyday in our
life, God sends us a message, an invitation
or an annunciation to serve Him. This we
usually reject, disregard or sometimes
tell ourselves maybe next time. In the
Church through her many ministries
we have many opportunities to share
ourselves through our time, talent and
treasure (3 Ts).
What are we waiting for? Today and
everyday is a good day to say, Yes, Lord,
like Mary.

ADBIENTO: KARI KA, O GINOONG JESUS!

a sining masunod nga mga isyu sang

Candlelight, akon anay ipaiway ang
kinaandan nga pagpaathag sang
mga Sakramento agud makabulig man
ako sa bumalasa sa pagpamalandong
nahanungod sa sining panahon sang
Adbiento kag Paskwa ukon Christmas.
Advent: Come Lord Jesus! Amo ini
ang hingapusan nga mga dinalan sang
Santos nga Kasulatan. Sa Libro sang
Bugna, (Bugna 20:22) mabasahan ini
nga mga tinaga nga nagapautwas sang
handom sang tagipusuon sang tagsa ka
Kristiano.
Mga duha ka libo ka tuig ang nagligad,
ang mga nalutos nga mga anak sang
Israel naghulat sa Iya, bisan pa nga wala
sila makahangop sing lubos kon Sin-o
Sia kag kon ano ang Iya pagahimuon.
Ang mga gintagna nahanungod kay
Kristo nagsugod sa Libro sang Genesis
sang magsiling ang Dios sa man-og nga
magapahamtang Sia sing pagdumtanay
sa tunga sang man-og kag sang babaye,
nga ang babayi magadugmok sang iya
ulo, kag sia magabuntog sang iya tikod.
Indi ini nahanungod kay Eva kundi
nahanungod kay Maria, ang Bag-o nga
Eva, nga ang iya tago nga pagkabun-ag,
nga wala madiparahi sang kalibutan,
amo ang nangin ganhaan sang aton
kaluwasan.
Paagi sa Walay Dagta nga
Pagpanamkon sa Mahal nga Birhen, ang

paglaum sang Hardin sang Paraiso antes ang

pagpakasala sang aton una nga mga ginikanan,
napukaw liwat. Ginhatag ini sa aton sang
Dios bilang isa ka libre nga dulot, kag amo ini
ang timaan sang pagkari sang Iya Anak, ang
Dios.
Iya kaluoy. Kon ano man ang kulang, ang Dios
amo ang magadugang sina. Kinahanglan lang
nga magsalig sa Iya kag himuon ang aton dapat
himuon.
Paano ini ginapatigayon sang Dios? Paano

Niya malambot ang aton kahimtangan

nga mamalatyon kag may katapusan
tungod kay Sia indi mamalatyon kag
walay katapusan? Daw indi mapatihan
Gani mabudlay i-angot
ang pagkari sang Ginoo sang Maragtas
sa Alagad nga Nagaantus sang Kalbaryo.
Ang mga tawo sang panahon ni Jesus
wala makakilala sa Iya tungod kay wala
sila makahangop sang matuod-tuod nga
kinaugali sang Mesiyas. Sila nagpaabot
sang isa ka maisog nga hangaway, ukon
sang isa ka madinalag-on nga hari,
kag gani, wala nila makilala ang ila
ginkalangkagan sa isa ka ginkondenar
nga kriminal nga ginlansang sa krus.
Lima na lamang ka adlaw kag
aton na makita ang katumanan sang
ginapaabot sang mga tawo halin pa gid
sang una. Makilala ayhan naton Sia kon
mag-abot Sia? Ukon mangin pareho bala
kita sa aton mga katigulangan nga wala
magsapak tungod kay indi amo Sia ang
aton ginapaabot?
Magkari Ka, O Ginoong Jesus! Tugoti
nga makilala ka namon sa Imo pag-abut!

What Can Waiting Do For Us?

(Part III)

e come to the last part of

our reflection on the value
of waiting in our lives. In my
two previous articles, I had elucidated
on the point that waiting makes us
realize that we are not in full control of
what is happening in our lives, God Is.
Moreover, waiting makes us
know and own what is essential and
important in our lives. The long period
of waiting gives us the opportunity to
look deeply into what really matters in
our life. Usually, what really matters
are those that last, endure and give us
real happiness, joy and peace.
The process of waiting may be
difficult and perhaps, agonizing to
some, depending on who and what you
are really waiting for. When you long
for somebody whom you really love
and care for, the time of waiting for
him or her to arrive is a period of deep

Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon

and earnest longing. Having this wish, some
would want to hasten the time! Furthermore,
when one yearns for the solution to him or her
problems and begs immediate answer to his
or her prayers, the period of waiting for what
is being desired includes and entails enduring
suffering and making some sacrifices for God
and for people being prayed for. How we wish
that magic happens so that we can be freed

from the angst and anxiety of waiting!

Yes, even though we may
experience pain and difficulties, it can
bring a lot of good to us and even to
other people, particularly spiritual
benefits. We grow and mature in our
faith through suffering. St. Paul in his
Letter to the Romans said, we even
boast of our afflictions, knowing that
affliction produces endurance, and
endurance, proven character; proven
character produces hope, and hope
does not disappoint, because the love
of God has been poured into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit that has been
given to us. (Rom. 5, 3-5)
Hence, let us not be afraid to
wait even if it means embracing the
Cross. May we realize that the glory
to be revealed to us in the next life
is incomparable to the suffering we
experience here on earth.

Whenever I think of the old Jaro

Convent, two important persons come to
mind: the late Most Rev. Msgr. Alberto J.
Piamonte and Most Rev. Jaime Cardinal
L. Sin. They contributed a lot in fostering
the strong spiritual-pillar image of the old
Jaro Convent. Because the parishioners
admired and respected them a lot, this also
reflected in the image the parishioners
had for the old Jaro convent. I remember
then Bishop Sin with his tall, imposing
figure, standing in front of the Convent and
surveying the entire Cathedral compound,
with the old water well just across the
cemented driveway. I was a kid then and
to me he looked such an authority and the
convent was his backdrop. Those were in
the early days of Martial Law, and before
I knew it, he was already appointed to the
Manila Archdiocese.
I also remember Most Rev. Piamonte
being greeted by parishioners in front of
the Convent. He had this habit of staying
put in front of the Convent because he
wanted to meet the smiling parishioners
who were passing by after the Masses.
From the Convent, he would also visit the
Tabernacle inside the Cathedral to pray.
Those were the days. I guess it is difficult
for me to separate the memory of these
two beloved bishop-parish priests of ours
from my remembrance of the old Jaro
Convent.

#Mercy Marian Concert, a Success

Julie Ann M. Blancaflor

ith the love of God,

the
Vicariate
of
St.
Peter
Youth
Ministries prayer-led Marian
Concert entitled #Mercy was
successfully held last December
13, 2014. Though it was
postponed three or four times
because of Typhoon Ruby and
some reasons, we are happy
because we had the opportunity
to improve our performance
and put more emphasis on the
Apostolic Visit of Pope Francis.
The concert was about Pope
Francis message on mercy. In
this Papal visit, we should bear
in mind that Pope Francis is not
the highlight but our brothers
and sisters who were victims
of Super Typhoon Yolanda and
earthquake most especially Jesus
Christ.
We also believe that we
attained our program objectives
which
are:
preparative,
catechetical and unifying.
As we prepare for the visit
of Pope Francis, we were made
aware of the realities in our
country. The sufferings of our
brothers and sisters become
means for us to value our family
and friends and become more
faithful to God. We were also
catechized through the corporal
and spiritual works of mercy, to
make us more generous to those
in dire need. The concert served
to unify the young people from
the different parishes of the
Vicariate of St. Peter.

We
witnessed
the
camaraderie of our young
people during the agape after
the concert. Hugging and
kissing each other goodbye
brought tears to their eyes,
knowing that they would not
anymore meet frequently. They
kept on exchanging numbers
and facebook accounts before
separating.
As one of the facilitators
of the concert, I can gladly say
that all our sacrifices are worth
it and are meaningful. In our
journey as young people, our
laughter, tiredness and stress
will be engraved in our hearts.
When we meet somewhere
down the roads, a simple smile
from one another will brighten
our day.
With great gratitude, we
thank all our sponsors who
helped us financially for the
expenses of the concert. Words
are not enough to express how
we appreciate your love and
care for us.
To our young people, we
claim in the most powerful
Name of Jesus that you are
already blessed by God and you
are a blessing to others.
To all the parents who
supported their childrens
participation, we thank you for
giving us the opportunity to
grow emotionally and spiritually.
As we build relationships with
others, we are getting intimately
closer to God.

Ang Pulong Nangin Tawo

Ika-38 nga Domingo sang Tuig, Disyembre 21, 2014

Ang Pagkatawo ni Jesus Ginpahibalo

Lk 1:26-38

Sa ikan-om nga bulan sang

pagbusong ni Elisabet ginpadala
sang Dios si Gabriel nga anghel
didto sa banwa sang Galilea nga
ginatawag Nazaret. 27 Ang anghel
may dala nga mensahi para sa isa
ka ulay nga dalaga nga kasalon sa
isa ka tawo nga ginghingalanan
kay Jose nga kaliwat ni Haring
David. Ang ngalan sang dalaga
amo si Maria. 28 Ang anghel
nagpakita sa iya kag nagsiling,
Magkalipay ka! Ikaw nga labing
nahamut-an, ang Ginoo yara sa
imo!
29
Sang pagkabati ni Maria sang
ginsiling sang anghel natublag
gid sia, nagpalibog kon ano ang
kahulogan sang ginhambal sang
anghel. 30 Nagsiling ang anghel sa
iya, Indi ka magkahadlok, Maria,
kay nahamut-an ka sang Dios. 31
26

Pamalandong

ion sang paghulat. Tion

sang pagkalangkag. Kon
may
ginapaabut
kita
halimbawa nga package halin
sa gwa, nagakalangkag kita kay
daw kadugay gid sang tion sang
paghulat. Kon san-o maabot wala
kita nakahibalo kay indi kita incontrol sang nagakahalanabo,
ilabi na gid sa aton kabuhi. Ang
Dios lang ang may control, gani
itugyan gid naton ang tanan sa
Dios samtang may ikasarang kita.
Subong nga Disyembre
may ginapaabut man kita. Ang
Ebanghelyo nagasaysay sa aton
nga ang anghel Gabriel nagpakita
sing hinali kay Maria. Daku gid
ang katingala ni Maria kag wala
gid niya ini ginapaabut. Suno sa
Ebanghelyo ni San Lukas, daku
gid ang kakibot ni Maria, indi sia
mapahamtang, kag ginkulbaan.
Indi man kita makabasol sa iya
kay si Maria wala sing ideya
kon ano ang kahulogan sang
pagbisita sa iya sang angel.
Ang anghel matuod nga indi
dapat kahadlukan kay sila nga
mensahero sang Dios. Gani nga
nagsiling si Gabriel sa iya nga
indi magkahadlok kay sia ang
pinili sang Dios.
Bisan wala sia makahangup
sing lubos, puno sing pagpaubos
nga nagbuhi si Maria sang
iya wala pagpangduha-duha
nga pagbaton sang binubuot
sang Dios sa iya. Sa iya man

CANDLE LIGHT (December 21 - 27, 2014)

Yari karon, magabusong ka kag

magaanak sang isa ka bata nga
lalaki, kag pagahingalanan mo
sia kay Jesus. 32 Mangin daku sia
kag pagatawgon nga Anak sang
Labing Makagagahom nga Dios.
Ang Ginoong Dios magahimo sa
iya nga hari subong sang iya amay
nga si David, 33 kag mangin hari sia
sing dayon sa mga kaliwat ni Jacob
kag ang iya ginharian wala sing
katapusan.
34
Si Maria nagsabat sa anghel,
Ano ang pagkahimo sini, kay ulay
ako nga babayi?
35
Ang anghel nagsabat, Ang
Espiritu Santo magakunsad sa
imo, kag ang gahom sang Dios
magalikop sa imo. Tungod sini
ang balaan nga bata nga matawo
sa imo pagatawgon nga Anak
sang Dios. 36 Dumdoma bala ang

nga paghulat daku ang iya

pagsakripisyo. Iya ginbatas ang
tanan nga mga kabudlay halin
sa iya pagmabdos kag pagbunag kay Jesus tubtub sa Iya sini
kamatayon sa Kalbaryo nga puno
sing pagpasensya.
Kasubong
man sini ang aton nabatyagan
samtang nagahulat. Kon kaisa
nagatubo sa aton ang wala sing
kasigurohan kon ano ang maabot
apang magpasensya lang kay ang
Dios gid ang nakahibalo kon ano
ang maayo sa aton.
Si Maria nga aton modelo
simple lang nga klase sang babae,
apang kinahanglanon gid nga
makatuon kita sa iya kaalam
kag kapinasahi indi lamang sa
sining tion sang Adbiento kundi
sa bilog naton nga kabuhi. Kita,
kasubong ni Maria, ginatawag
man sang Dios, apang pirme lang
kita nagabalibad, wala nagapati,
kag wala sing tinion para sa Iya.
Si
Maria
tama
ka
mapainubuson.
Amo ini nga
mabudlay sia sundon kay sa
masami
matinalak-on
kita,
indi bala? Gani nga tinguhaan
naton
nga
magtubo
sa
pagkamapainubuson. Sa aton nga
mga Katoliko ginadayaw naton
sia indi lang tungod sia ang aton
Iloy sa Langit kundi luyag man
naton nga magmangin - Maria,
kay si Maria ang pinaka-puro nga
laragway sang pagka-Kristiano.
Puno sang pagpailob sia nga
nagtuman sang binubuot sang
Dios sanglit ang tanan ginsalig

imo paryente nga si Elizabet.

Bisan tigulang na sia kag bawas, nagabusong na sing anom ka
bulan sang isa ka bata nga lalaki.
37
Kay sa Dios wala sing bisan ano
nga indi mahimo.
38
Si Maria nagsiling, Alagad
ako sang Ginoo. Kabay nga
matuman ini sa akon suno sa imo
ginsiling. Kag ang anghel nagbiya

LOILO City, Dec.12, 2014 To literally

add color to the spiritual preparation
for the upcoming visit of Pope Francis
to the Philippines, an on-the-spot painting
contest will be held on Dec. 19, 12 p.m. at
the Museo Iloilo, Iloilo City with the theme:
Mercy and Compassion: An Apostolic Visit
of Pope Francis to the Philippines.
Fr. Rafael Luis Clavel, director of the
Jaro Archdiocesan Youth Commission,
said, The on-the-spot painting contest
is not merely a competition of skills, but
a catechetical and pastoral activity with
three aims.
According to the priest, the first aim is
to heighten awareness about the upcoming
visit of Pope Francis among the youth.
The second is to channel the
enthusiasm of the young people towards
the main purpose of the papal visit: that we
become a people of mercy and compassion,
he added.
Lastly, the contest aims to present an
opportunity for young people to make
concrete contributions as persons of mercy
and compassion in the Year of the Poor,
Clavel said.
The contest entries will be donated to

the Archdiocese of Jaro. In turn, the Archdiocesan

Youth Commission will direct the proceeds from
the artworks to help the victims of typhoon
Yolanda and of other recent calamities.
Jaro Archdiocesan Youth Commission is
inviting young people from three to 21 years of age
to join the contest. Participants will be divided into
three age-group categories:
Category 1 (3-7 yrs. old)
Category 2 (10-15 yrs. old)
Category 3 (16-21 yrs. old)
Registration for the contest was opened on
Nov. 19 and will last until Dec. 15, 2014, from 9:00
a.m. up to 5:00 p.m., every day, at the Museo Iloilo
in Bonifacio Drive, Iloilo City.
In line with the tradition of all papal events,
the registration for the contest is free.
Participants are advised to bring the
following during the registration: birth or
baptismal certificate (photocopy) as proof of age
or certification from the school administrator
as proof of enrolment or from the parish priest
or parochial vicar as proof of membership in the
Parish Youth Ministry.

The Poor are Our Family Priest

ANILA, Dec. 17, 2014 The Year

of the Poor should remind every
believer that he is responsible for
his poor brothers and sisters, who are all
part of Gods family, said a priest during a
recent reflection.
Everyone is part of one big family,
said Fr. Jojo Alisbo, parish priest of St.
Gabriel in Pililia, Rizal.
He stressed that the poor are our
responsibility and it is not enough to be
simply aware that they exist.

Not just poverty awareness

According to the priest, the Churchs
celebration of the Year of the Poor should
remind everyone of his commitment to
battle hunger, homelessness, sickness and
other forms of poverty.

VATICAN News

The realization that a segment of society has

less in life does not resolve, Alisbo said.
There is a challenge, he pointed out. We have
to address it to give our poor brethren dignity.
The question is who are going to respond
Alisbo said.
Those who have time, talent, and treasure, he
said. And every one of us has the three.
Lack of compassion
That is the genuine appreciation of the
realization that some fellow believers are not as
fortunate as others, Alisbo added.
People suffering from poverty also suffer from
the feeling that their brothers who are relatively
prosperous do not care about them, he said.
Their mind and heart also suffer, unable to
appreciate their dignity the importance of being
human, he said. We have to make them feel that
they have dignity.

CBCP News

The poor should feel the Church is

there for them, Alisbo said.
The Year of the Poor should also
embrace believers who are poor in spirit
and in relationships, he said.
When we say Year of the Poor,
most of the time, we think of people who
are financially poor, Alisbo said. Year of
the Poor is love of God, which is for all,
regardless of ones economic status.
The emphasis of the year-round
observance is actually love a love that
does not specially favor one over another,
but treats all believers equally, he said.
All are equally poor and helpless
before God, he noted. With this
helplessness, people need God.
We need his mercy and compassion,
he noted.

CANDLE LIGHT (December 21 - 27, 2014)

ecember 17, 2014. The word

that stood out the most during
Wednesdays general audience
was
congratulations.
December
17th marks the Popes 78th birthday.
Thousands of visitors didnt forget the
big day.
A group of seminarians even
brought him a cake. And Pope blew out
the candles.
As usual, he made his way through
St. Peters Square, and blessed several
children along the way. He also
took a quick break to chat a bit with
seminarians who are studying in Rome.
The Pope focused his catechesis on
the family, describing it as a gift from

God. With Christmas Season, he noted that Jesus

chose to be born within a family. He then called
on all Christian families, to embrace Jesus just like
Mary and Joseph did.
Every Christian family, can welcome Jesus just
like Mary and Joseph did. They can listen to Him, talk
to Him, protect Him, grow with Him. And in doing
so, they can change the world. Lets make room in
our hearts and in our day, to welcome Jesus. Thats
what Mary and Joseph did. It wasnt easy. They had
to overcome many challenges!
He went on to add that Jesus family was a real
and hardworking family with its ups and downs.
This, he said, should serve as an example to all
other average, every day families.
They were not a fake family or an unrealistic
one. The family of Nazareth allows us to rediscover

CANDLE LIGHT (December 21 - 27, 2014)

the vocation and mission of the family, the

every day family.
To celebrate the Popes birthday a
group of tango dancers came to St. Peters
Square to take part in a so called Tango
Flash mob, and dance for the Pope.
When I passed through the Square,
I saw different groups of tango dancers.
I hope you can put on a good show today
and bring in some Argentinian winds.
Even though the mood was festive,
the Pope also took on a serious note.
He prayed for the victims of the recent
terrorists attacks in Australia, Pakistan and
Yemen and their families. He called on the
attackers to have a change of heart.

Archbishop Lagdameo Celebrates Golden Jubilee

ll roads led to the Jaro Metropolitan

Cathedral as Archbishop Angel N.
Lagdameo,D.D., the revered Archbishop
of Jaro, celebrated fifty golden years of his
Sacerdotal Ordination with a Solemn Mass on
Friday, 19th of December, 2014, concelebrated
by about one-hundred-two priests from the
Archdioceses of Jaro, Cebu, Dumaguete, and
Quezon Province, all of which are significant
to the good Archbishops journey in the
priesthood.
At the Introduction to the Mass, the
commentator revealed that when he was in
the seminary, the young seminarian Angel,
as he was fondly called by his superiors and
fellow seminarians, wrote in his essay entitled
The Priest I Want to Be: If a priest is anything,
he should be a happy priest, and I want to be
a happy priest. I want people to say, He is a
happy priest.
Homilist was Fr. Catalino Arevalo, S.J., who
was Archbishop Lagdameos mentor back at
the San Jose Seminary. Fr. Arevalo said: The
Letter to the Hebrews tell us the real marks of
the priesthood mercy, fidelity, compassion.
The crucial mark of the priesthood is Jesus. The
priest is a simple reminder of Jesus with love in
all directions. Let this be the task of love: To
feed the flock - which is the world. Every day,
Jesus asks His people: Do you love me? And Fr.
Angel, for fifty years now, answers, thru Peter:
Lord, You know all things. You know I love
You. Do we, priests, love You Lord? Lord, You
know all things. You know we love You.
During the Prayers of the Faithful,
Archbishop Lagdameo made the invitation:
Join me in thanking the Lord for His gift
of Vocation. Let us all thank The Father for
making us His children.
To recall the words that he said at his
Installation to the Jaro Archbishopric fourteen
years ago, Archbishop Lagdameo said in his
homily: With Great trust in God who chose
me for the great work ahead, I humbly accept

Armando A. Sue
the staff with a prayer that I may use it as the
Good shepherd does. With you a lamb, for you
a shepherd. . .Yes, I come among you in the
name of the Lord, seeking His presence among
you, and discovering that presence.
At todays golden jubilee Mass,
Archbishop Lagdameo expressed his gratitude
to all who were instrumental in inspiring and
encouraging him to the priesthood. He says
in response: To be a priest is not only to be a
minister of the Church, but to be an instrument
of Christ. The essence of the priesthood is to
be a living and continuing memory of Christ.
No priest is a priest all by himself. His fellow
priests help him. We are priests with one
another, for the people of God. We are Gods
blessing to one another as well as to the people
we serve. I cannot do it any better without all
of you.
From the Vatican, a letter of
congratulations from Pope Francis was read
by Msgr. Gene C. Velarde, Jaro Parish Priest,
which read, To our venerable brother Angel
N. Lagdameo: To you, our brother, we express
our joyful feeling and fraternal brotherhood
which unites us with you in the episcopate. . .
on this occasion, we wish to thank you for the
fruit of your labours. . .
From Malacaang palace, President
Benigno S. Aquino sent his letter, read by Fr.
Joenick S. Territorio: I congratulate you on the
fiftieth anniversary of you Ordination to the
Priesthood President Aquino also recalled
in his letter his gratitude to Archbishop
Lagdameo for the spiritual help extended to
his mother, President Corazon Aquino, and to
him, as well.
Archbishop Lagdameo was born on August
2, 1940 in Lukban, Quezon. He is a graduate of
San Jose Seminary. He is the twelfth Bishop of
Jaro and the fifth Filipino Archbishop of Jaro.
He was appointed Jaro Archbishop on March
11, 2000, and installed on May 9, 2000.

Right after his sacerdotal ordination

on December 19,1964, he served in various
capacities at Mount Carmel Seminary and St.
Alphonsus School of Theology for fifteen years.
In 1978, he served as Promotary of the First
Diocesan Synod of Lucena, convoked by then
Bishop (now Cardinal) Jose T. Sanchez.
On August 12, 1980, he was ordained
Bishop, becoming an Auxiliary to the late Julio
Cardinal Rosales. In, 1986, he was Secretary
General of the Fourth Diocesan Synod of
Cebu, convoked by Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.
That same year, he became Coadjutor Bishop
of Dumaguete, succeeding the late Bishop
Epifanio B. Surban on August 2, 1989. One of
the highlights of his Dumaguete Archbishopric
was convoking its First Diocesan Synod in 1992,
one year after the Second Plenary Council of
the Philippines.
From 1994 to 1998, he was Chairman of
the Office of the Laity of the Federation of Asian
Bishops Conferences, during which he gave
conferences and participated in Conventions
of the Catholic Laity in various countries in
Asia. From 1990 to January 2000, he served as
Chairman of the CBCP Episcopal Commission
for the Laity. He served as Chairman of the
CBCP National committee for the Great Jubilee
Year 2000. It was in the midst of this national
Great Jubilee celebration that he was appointed
as Archbishop of Jaro.
A highlight of Archbishop Lagdameos
term as Jaro Archbishop is the Third Diocesan
Synod of Jaro which set the pastoral priorities
of the Archdiocese of Jaro in place.
We wish Archbishop Lagdameo good
health and good wishes in the grace of The Holy
Trinity on his Sacerdotal Ordination Golden
Julbilee.

The Ecclesiological Bond between

Coleggio Filippino and the Church of Jaro
Fr. Midyphil Billones

eople may ask: what connection do we have to an institution that seems far away
and why should we help? Chances are, many people may not have direct access to
Coleggio Filippino but the pastors serving you faithfully most probably would have
passed theological training under professors and formators who studied in Rome and
were housed in this institution. What is the common denominator of Msgr. Piamonte,
Msgr.Catalua, Msgr. Correa, Fr. Landar etc? They are dedicated veterans in seminary
work who have served faithfully the local Church of Jaro after having studied in Rome.
This is precisely the vision of the Catholic Bishops of the Philippines when it established
Coleggio Filippino. To put up a residence for priest scholars who are sent for studies sub
umbra Petri(under the shadow of Peter) and after their advanced studies will return to
their dioceses to help form future priests. In fact, our very own Abp. Piamonte was one
of the first residents of this place. Currently we have there Fr. Yves Francis Matrinez and
Fr. Mars Cortez doing further studies as preparation for work in the seminary. There is
therefore an ecclesiological bond between us and the Coleggio Filippino! So the help
we give, even though very small, is not only a form of help to an aging edifice but on a
deeper way, also an act of love and an investment in the future of our Church in Jaro and
the whole Philippine Church!
