INTRODUCTION
The Bangalore city is one of the rapidly urbanizing cities in South India and
it is well known for being a hub for Information Technology; it is referred as
the Silicon Valley of India. The Bangalore city is situated at 920 meters
above MSL. The city is also known for the gardens and popularly known as
Garden City of India. The city has a strong educational and technological
base and pleasant climate. Bangalore is witnessing a tremendous growth in
industry, information technologies, trade and commerce leading to a rapid
growth of the city and large scale urbanization. With increasing urbanization
the complexity of problems has multiplied with a population of 84,99,399 in
2011 as per the provisional census report and a vehicle population of
41,72,062 in 2011 (as per the Bangalore Traffic police). There is a
tremendous increase in the number of vehicles plying on the roads. The
continuing increase in vehicle density has lead to increase in a number of
problems related to urban infrastructure such as congestion, parking
problems etc.
CONCLUSIONS
It was found that 42 percent of the underpasses of BDA have vertical
clearance as per IRC standards (5.5 m) and the remaining 58 percent of the
underpasses did not have vertical clearance as per IRC standards. As far as
width is concerned 25 percent of the underpasses did not have the width as
per IRC standards (single lane = 3.75m and double lane = 7.5m).

Vertical clearance
As per IRC - 5.5m
It was found that nearly 67 percent of the BBMP underpasses were not
maintained whereas only 33 percent of the underpasses were maintained
properly.
Lighting was provided for 87 percent of the BBMP underpasses and lighting
was not provided for the balance 13 percent.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The underpasses must be constructed strictly as per IRC Standards.
The underpass should be properly planned and it should look good
aesthetically also.
The pavement in the underpass should be maintained properly
so that potholes dont occur and the sand that accumulates at the
sides of the underpass is cleared regularly.
Proper markings like thermoplastic lane markings, edge line markings
(retro reflective markings), medians with cats eye and retro reflective
painting should be provided.
The drainage of underpass gets filled up with water and gets clogged
during rainy season which needs to be maintained periodically.
The underpass should be maintained properly and proper lighting should
be provided.
