6.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION AND PROCESS FLOW DIAGRAM


The200MMscfdLonghornGasPlantwillconsistofinletseparationfacilities,anaminetreatingunit,glycolunit,
cryogenicprocessingskid,andsupportingequipment.Thesupportingorauxiliaryequipmentconsistsofahot
oilheater,refrigerationsystem,regenerationheater,residuecompression,regenerativethermaloxidizer,flare,
storagetanks,andtruckloadingandunloadingfacilitiesforconsumablechemicals.Aprocessflowdiagramis
includedattheendofthissection.

6.1. INLET AND SEPARATION


Gaswillflowintotheplantfromeitheroftwodeliverypointsthroughhighpressurepipelinesequippedwith
onsitepipelinepigreceivers(EPN7MSS,EPN8MSS).Gasfromthepigreceiversflowsintotheinletslug
catcherforliquidremoval.ThegasisthenmeasuredandgoesthroughthePlantInletSeparatorforremovalof
anyadditionalwater,solidsorliquids.GasthenflowstothePlantInletFilter/Separatorforfilteringofsmaller
particlesofwaterandsolids.Condensatefromallinletseparationequipmentispumpedbackintoapipelinefor
deliveryandhandlingatanexistingfacilitylocatedoffsite.

6.2. GAS TREATING


Afterinletseparationandfiltration,theinletgasflowsintotheAmineContactor,wherethegasiscontactedwith
anaqueoussolutionofUCARSOLAP814aminetoremoveCO2.CO2exitswiththeaminefromthebottomofthe
contactorandisheatedandregeneratedusingclosedhotoilsystemintheAmineRegenerator.Hotoilis
circulatedandsuppliedbytheHeatingMediumHeater(EPN4).TheCO2releasedfromtheregenerationprocess
isroutedtotheonsiteRegenerativeThermalOxidizer(RTO,EPN5),wheretheventgasiscombustedand
burned.WhentheRTOisdownformaintenance,theventgasisroutedtoaflare(EPN15).Treatedgas(less
CO2)exitstheAmineContactorandisroutedtotheTreatedGasCoolerswhereitiscooledwithambientair.Any
condensedwaterdropsoutintheTreatedGasScrubber.Waterthatdropsoutisrecycledbacktotheamine
processforreuse.

6.3. GAS DEHYDRATOR


GasfromtheTreatedGasScrubberthengoestotheTEGContactorwherewaterremovalisaccomplishedby
contactingwithTriethyleneGlycol(TEG).TheTEGisthenregeneratedina2.0MMBtu/hrdirectfiredreboiler
(EPN1).Flashvaporsfromthisunitgothroughanexchangertoremovecondensablesandthenareroutedback
tothereboilerburnerasfuel.WaterremovedfromtheTEGinthereboileriscooledandanyresidualvaporsare
routedtotheRTO(EPN5)forcombustion.DuringRTOmaintenancetheresidualvaporsareventedtotheflare
(EPN15).Dehydratedgasleavesthecontactorandisexchangedwithincomingglycolinasidemounted
exchangerandthenroutedtotheMoleSieveInletSeparatortorecoveranyglycolcarryover.Anyrecovered
glycol/waterisrecycledbacktotheTEGsystemforreuse.

GasexitstheMoleSieveInletSeparatorandflowsintotheInletFilter/Separatorwhereitisagainfilteredprior
toenteringtheMoleSieveDehydratorBeds.Thegasflowsintotwo(2)ofthethree(3)MoleSieveDehydrators
forremovalofanytracesofwaterpriortothecryogenicprocess.Eachdehydratorcontainsmolecularsieve
dehydrationbeadsthatabsorbtraceamountsofwaterfromthegasstream.Twovesselswillbeusedto
dehydrateinletgaswhilethethirdvesselisbeingregenerated.Dehydratedhighpressuregasisusedfor
regeneration.TheregenerationgasiscompressedbyaSundyneCompressor.Thecompressedgasflowstothe
RegenerationGasHeater(EPN3).Theheaterdutyisnota24hour,continuousdutyoperationbutonlyneeded
afewhoursperdayperbed.Thehotgasflowsfromtheheatertothedehydratorvesselbeingregenerated.The

waterisremovedfromthemolecularsievebyevaporation.Thehotgasandvaporizedwaterflowtothe
RegenerationGasCooler,wherethegasiscooledandthewateriscondensed.Thecoolregenerationgasstream
flowstotheRegenerationGasScrubberwherecondensedwaterislevelcontrolledtothecloseddrainsystem
flashtankandthentotheplantwastewatertank.Thecooledgasrecyclestotheinletoftheplantupstreamof
theDehydrationInletFilter/Separator.DehydratedgasfromthemolesievebedsflowsintotheMoleSieveDust
Filterstoremoveanymolesieveparticlespriortoentryintothecryogenicprocess.

6.4. CRYOGENIC PROCESS


GasflowintotheCryogenicProcessissplitto(2)platefintypeexchangers.Normally60%willgototheInlet
GasExchanger,whiletheremainderflowstotheGas/ProductExchanger,thentheDemethanizerreboiler,and
thentotheDemethanizerSideReboilerorHeater.Theexchangersarecombinedintooneplatefinexchanger.
GasvaporandliquidfromtheexchangersarecombinedandentertheDemethanizerTower.Theinletgasis
furthercooledbyheatexchangewithpropanerefrigerantintheInletGasChiller.Thereare(3)1500
horsepower(hp)electricdrivenscrewcompressorsthatsupplytheprocesswithrefrigerantpropaneforcooling
ofthegas.Anyheaviercomponentscollectedintherefrigerationcompressorscrubbersorsystemgoestothe
closeddrainsystemflashtank.RefrigerantpropaneisloadedbytruckintotheRefrigerantAccumulator.Vapor
andliquidsfromthechillerthenflowtotheColdSeparator.TheColdSeparatorisusedtoseparatevaporand
liquidhydrocarbonsthathavecondensedasaresultofchillingintheexchangers.Mostofthevaporexitingthe
ColdSeparatorflowsintotheExpandersideoftheExpander/BoosterCompressorwherethetemperatureand
pressurearereducedandentertheDemethanizerTower.AportionoftheColdSeparatorliquidscombineswith
aportionoftheColdSeparatoroverheadvaporsandflowstotheDemethanizerFeedSubcoolerwhereitis
cooledwithcoldresiduegas.ThepressureisreducedandthestreamfeedsthetopoftheDemethanizerTower.
TheremainderoftheColdSeparatorLiquidislevelcontrolledtoreducethepressureandentersthe
DemethanizerTower.

TheDemethanizerTowerisapackedtowerwithabottomsreboilerandasidereboiler(alsoknownasaside
heater).LiquidsleavingthebottomofthetowerflowtotheProductSurgeTank.Theproductisthenpumped
bytheProductBoosterPumpswhicharetandemsealcentrifugalpumps,throughtheGas/ProductExchanger
wheretheproductisheatedbyexchangewiththeinletgasandthentotheProductPipelinePumpswhichare
tandemsealmultistagecentrifugalpumps.Overheadgasvapors(residue)fromtheDemethanizerTowerflows
totheDemethanizerFeedSubcooler,thentotheInletGasExchangerwherethetemperatureisincreasedby
heatexchangewiththeinletgas.TheresidueleavingthisexchangeriscompressedbytheBoosterCompressor
sideoftheExpander/BoosterCompressor.BoostedresidueiscooledintheBoosterCompressorAftercooler
andthenflowstotheresiduecompressors.Residuecompressorscomprise(3)5,000hpelectricmotordriven
reciprocatingcompressorswhichtaketheresiduegasfromplantresiduepressuretopipelinesalespressure.
Anycompressorliquidsaccumulatedfromscrubbersisroutedtothecloseddrainsystemflashtank.After
coolingwithfinfanunitstheresiduegasisdeliveredbypipelinetothesalespointoffsite.

6.5. CLOSED DRAIN SYSTEM


Thecloseddrainsystemisdesignedwithaflashtankthatwilloperateat40psigandwillrouteallflashvapors
toavaporrecoveryunit(VRU).TwoVRUswillbeinstalledatthesitesothatwhenoneisdownorundergoing
maintenance,theotherunitwillcompensate.Liquidsfromtheflashtankgotothelowpressurecondensate
tanks(EPNs17,18).Waterisseparatedoutfromthecondensateandisdrainedtothewastewatertank(EPN
16).Condensateisloadedoutviatrucks(FUG2).Flash,working,andbreathingvaporsfromthelowpressure
condensatetanksarecontrolledbythevaporrecoveryunits(VRU)anddeliveredtotheplantfuelsystem.

6.6. OPEN DRAIN SYSTEM


Thefacilityisequippedwithanopen(atmospheric)drainsystemtocollectrainwaterandskiddrainliquidsto
theopendrainsump(EPN21).Thewatercollectedinthesumpflowstothewastewatertank(EPN16).Water
inthewastewatertankisloadedontotrucksforoffsitehandling.

6.7. FLARE SYSTEM


Two40CFR60.18compliantflares(EPNs6and15)willbelocatedonthefacilitysite.Flare1(EPN6)isair
assisted.Flare2(EPN15)isunassisted.Bothflaresaredesignedforsmokelessoperation.Allpressuresafety
valves(PSV)containingheavierthanairhydrocarbons,refrigerationsystemPSVsandcompressorblowdowns
andresiduecompressorblowdownvaporsareroutedtotheEPN6flare.Emissionsresultingfromtheamine
unitandTEGdehydratorduringRTOdowntimewillberoutedtotheEPN15flare.
