Radio Communication

To enter class D: 2 way radio communication is required.


The control tower must read back your tail number (call-sign)
Some possible taxi instructions
-taxi to runway 5
-taxi to runway 5 at victor
-taxi to runway 5 via victor
-taxi to 9R via V1, Charlie, Alpha
-taxi to 9R at Papa, via V1, Charlie, Alpha
-taxi via V1, Charlie, Alpha to 9R at Papa
-taxi to runway 9R via V1, Charlie, Alpha: HOLD SHORT OF CHARLIE
(ground can tell you to hold short of any taxiway)
-taxi to 27L at charlie via V1, Charlie
-taxi via V1, Charlie, Alpha to 27L at Papa
-taxi to runway 27L at Delta via Victor, cross 5/23, Delta
-take a right on Victor, left on Delta to 27L at Delta; cross runway 23
-cross 23 on Victor, and Delta to 27L at Delta
-taxi to runway 27L at Delta via left on 5, right on Romeo, Left on Delta
-taxi to runway 23 via Victor, Delta, Echo; cleared to cross 23
Take-off instructions:
-cleared for take-off runway 5, right turn on course approved
-cleared for take-off runway 5, fly runway heading
-cleared for take-off runway 9R at Papa, fly runway heading 'til mid-river, then
southbound approved
-cleared for take-off runway 5, make a right downwind departure
-cleared for take-off runway 27L at Delta, straight out 'til 1200 feet, then on
course
-cleared for take-off runway 5, traffic is right base with clearance (this is not
traffic that you are following, you need to hurry up)
-cleared for take-off runway 5, traffic is a cherokee over the mall (same thing)
-cleared for take-off, NO DELAY
Example inbound instructions:
Over Radiation:
-Enter right base, runway 5, report the campus (campus = florida tech = FIT)
-Enter right base, runway 5, report abeam the campus
-Cleared to land runway 5
-Fly westbound, traffic to follow is over the interstate on final

-FIT 26, give me 2 turns over radiation and report back inbound
-FIT 26, hold over radiation, call me back in 3 minutes
-FIT 26, fly northbound over the west bank of the river, report over the Melbourne
Causeway
-enter left base runway 27L, report the Melbourne Causeway
-enter left base runway 27L, report the Melbourne Causeway, expect runway 27R,
traffic to follow is an R.J. on an 8 mile final
-enter left downwind runway 23
-enter left base runway 23
-enter right downwind runway 9R, report Midfield
-enter right base runway 9R, report base
-enter Left crosswind runway 9L, traffic you will be following is over the
threshold for a touch and go on 9L.
Over Abandoned:
-Enter right base runway 9R, report base
-Enter right base, runway 9R, over the interstate, report base
-Enter right base, runway 9R, report 2 mile base over the interstate
-fly straight-in, runway 5, report the interstate (interstate = highway = I-95)
-fly straight-in, runway 5, report 2 mile final
-Fly due north, for a right base runway 9L, report West abeam the field
-Enter right base runway 9R, expect 9L
-enter left downwind runway 27L
-enter left downwind runway 27L, report midfield
-enter midfield left downwind runway 27L
-enter midfield left downwind runway 27L, report on the Forty-Five
-proceed to the Melbourne Causeway, for a left base runway 27L
Over Lake Washington:
-Make a straight in runway 9R, report the interstate
-Enter Left base for runway 9L over the interstate, report base
-Enter Right downwind runway 27R, report entering the downwind
-Fly south over the interstate for a left base runway 9R (or 9L)
-Fly southeast bound for a left base runway 5.
-Stay west of the interstate, report 2 mile left base runway 9R
-Fly southbound west of the interstate, report crossing the extended centerline of
runway 9R
-head straight to the numbers, runway 9R
-Enter an extended right downwind, runway 27R, west of the interstate; report the
interstate

Additional Instructions:
-cleared touch and go, runway 9L, on the go, enter Right Midfield Crosswind,
Runway 5
-cleared touch and go, runway 9L, on the go, over the terminal for runway 5
-cleared touch and go, runway 9L, Left Closed traffic, turn all crosswinds prior to
the VOR
-change to runway 9R for this time, 9R cleared touch and go, on the go, resume
left traffic for 9L
-extend your downwind, traffic you're following is on final just outside of the
interstate, advise that traffic in sight
-FIT 26, maintain visual separation with that traffic
-Give me a left 360 back to the downwind
-give me a right 270 and re-enter the right downwind runway 27R
-FIT 12, give me a right 360 for spacing
-Extend your downwind for an extra 10 seconds for a departure
-FIT 17, there will be one departure prior to your arrival
-FIT 02, one departure prior
-FIT 29, start your crosswind turn as soon as speed and altitude permits.
-FIT 29, you are number 2, traffic is a Bonanza base-to-final, cleared touch and
go runway 9L, make left traffic, all crosswinds before the VOR, and use caution for men
and equipment (or mowers) working adjacent to the approach end of the runway.
-expect a 3 minute delay for wake turbulence
-take it to the numbers/ head straight for the numbers / turn straight for the
threshold
-square your base to final turn
-Make short approach
-in the event of an early go-around on runway 5, I'm going to need an early right
turn to the crosswind
-cleared for the option (this includes, Full Stop, Touch & Go, Stop & Go, and
Low Approach: it is not required to inform tower if you need to go around)
-FIT 06, give me some S-turns over the mall for spacing
-Aircraft over radiation, enter right base runway 5, report the campus (you should
emphasize your tail number when reading this back because obviously he missed it)
Others:
-FIT 07, say type landing

an alternator failure, and may lose radios

-FIT 17, i lost my traffic
