In this excerpt from the book The Great Events by Famous Historians, Abraham Lincoln
explains how he wanted to deal with the Union and the issue of slavery. His ultimate goal was to
save the union, not abolish slavery but, he believed it was key to preserving the Union. Abraham
Lincoln explains his reasoning for delaying the Emancipation Proclamation. This document
helped in research to support a thesis that Abraham Lincoln wanted to save the Union and
abolish slavery.
Lincoln, Abraham. "Lincolns Gettysburg Address." 19 November 1863. The Civil War, 18611865. World Book Advanced. Web. 3 Nov. 2014.<http://worldbookonline.com>.
Abraham Lincoln gave this speech after the Battle of Gettysburg in 1865. He reminds America
that we are dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. He gives his
definition of Americas democracy and the purpose of the Union fighting. He wants his audience
to be dedicated to saving the United States because so many soldiers died at the battle of
Gettysburg. This speech improves research by showing how Abraham Lincoln tried to keep the
Union together.
Union and fighting against them. He said the confederate states would be restored with their
rights and all property except slaves. He declared any law in a states government should
recognize slaves freedom and provide for their education. He also said that everything about
the state (name and boundaries) would stay the same as it was before the Civil War. This helped
in research by showing Lincoln was willing to forgive the Confederacy to save the Union.

The Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln declares that all slaves in Confederate
states as free. Lincoln wrote this proclamation because he felt it was a necessary war measure
for suppressing said rebellion. He declares that the free slaves should refrain from violence;
work only for money, and that they can be a part of the United States armed service. This
Proclamation helped in research by showing how Abraham Lincoln used his power to free
slaves.

Holzer, Harold. "Emancipation Proclamation." World Book Advanced. World Book, 2014. Web. 14
Nov. 2014. <http://www.worldbookonline.com/>.
This document explains the early views and effects of Abraham Lincolns Emancipation
Proclamation and his change in policy. At first the Northern states entered the Civil War to unite
the Union. In the midst of the war, Northerners tried to convince Lincoln to free slaves because
they believed it would help them win the war. Congress passed a law that said if Confederate
slaves crossed Union borders they were free. At this time, Lincoln decided to change his policy
on slavery and issue his Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation was an advantage to the
Union and hurt the Confederacy because many black slaves joined the Union army. The
Proclamation made the South lose allies and the North gain allies. This document helped in
research by explaining the causes and effects of Abraham Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation.

University of Virginia, 2014. Web. 13 Nov. 2014. <http://millercenter.org/>.
This document tells about how Abraham Lincoln lived with his family in the White House
during the Civil War. Lincoln was self-educated and loved to read from famous authors. Edwin
Everett says, My speech will soon be forgotten, yours never will be. How gladly I would
exchange my hundred pages for your twenty lines, referring to the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln
had chronic depression and made references to death in several of his writings. He used humor to
deal with his depression and to drive home his points. This document helped in research by
providing information about Abraham Lincolns personality and character.
