This 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution officially abolished slavery in the United
States in 1865. It states that slavery and involuntary servitude would no longer exist in the
United States. Slavery could only exist if it was used as punishment for a crime. The 13th
amendment also gives Congress the power to enforce the amendment. This document
helped in research to prove that Abraham Lincolns goal to abolish slavery was met.

majority. It gives a breakdown of the results from several states. This newspaper article

In this excerpt from the book The Great Events by Famous Historians, Abraham Lincoln
explains how he wanted to deal with the Union and the issue of slavery. His ultimate goal was to
save the union, not abolish slavery but, he believed it was key to preserving the Union. Abraham
Lincoln explains his reasoning for delaying the Emancipation Proclamation. This document
helped in research to support a thesis that Abraham Lincoln wanted to save the Union and
abolish slavery.

Abraham Lincoln gave this speech after the Battle of Gettysburg in 1865. He reminds America
that we are dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. He gives his
definition of Americas democracy and the purpose of the Union fighting. He wants his audience
to be dedicated to saving the United States because so many soldiers died at the battle of
Gettysburg. This speech improves research by showing how Abraham Lincoln tried to keep the
Union together.

This proclamation was Abraham Lincoln using his presidential power from the constitution to
grant pardons. He said he wouldnt charge the confederate states with treason for leaving the


Union and fighting against them. He said the confederate states would be restored with their
rights and all property except slaves. He declared any law in a states government should
recognize slaves freedom and provide for their education. He also said that everything about
the state (name and boundaries) would stay the same as it was before the Civil War. This helped
in research by showing Lincoln was willing to forgive the Confederacy to save the Union.

The Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln declares that all slaves in Confederate
states as free. Lincoln wrote this proclamation because he felt it was a necessary war measure
for suppressing said rebellion. He declares that the free slaves should refrain from violence;
work only for money, and that they can be a part of the United States armed service. This
Proclamation helped in research by showing how Abraham Lincoln used his power to free
slaves.

This Newspaper Article was written after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. At the time
he was still alive but the writer wasnt expecting him to live. It states when, where, and how


the assassination happened. An assassin, who was unknown at that time, shot Abraham
Lincoln in the head. This newspaper will be used to provide information for research about
Lincolns death.

Proclamation and his change in policy. At first the Northern states entered the Civil War to unite


the Union. In the midst of the war, Northerners tried to convince Lincoln to free slaves because
they believed it would help them win the war. Congress passed a law that said if Confederate
slaves crossed Union borders they were free. At this time, Lincoln decided to change his policy
on slavery and issue his Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation was an advantage to the
Union and hurt the Confederacy because many black slaves joined the Union army. The
Proclamation made the South lose allies and the North gain allies. This document helped in
research by explaining the causes and effects of Abraham Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation.
