The moment I managed to solve a problem concerning a sequence using Thues Lemma I

realized that mathematics is a wonderful work of art. Solving problems gives me the feeling
of freedom, due to the high level of generalization that mathematics has, behind which
brilliant ideas that merge in a eurythmic way hide.
Solving problems is addictive to me and has become a daily thought, as Russell Bertrand
says in his essay The study of mathematics. Whilst solving as much as I can in a problem,
even if I do not reach the final conclusion, I can uncover lots of useful results that might help
me in other problems. Sometimes, when a problem gives me trouble, I may lie in bed, during
the night, and if an idea occurs to me, I get up and write down on paper my ideas. Most of all
I like the Number Theory and Combinatorial Number Theory because they imply
perspicacity and at the same time thorough thinking. I think this is the most fascinating part
of mathematics since people were interested in the properties of numbers from the beginning
of history and still are nowadays, for example the case of the Twin Primes. Many of my
books debate the Number Theory domain and researching for hours properties of some
sequences and trying to apply them in some problems has captivated me since I developed
my passion for mathematics.
Going to competitions was another way I could learn more and more about mathematics and I
could enrich my knowledge and experience. Until now I participated in more than 45 national
contests from which the most important awards were 4 medals in the National Mathematical
Olympiad, 2 times the prize for the best paper in the competition at 2 different contests, the
qualification in the Senior Large National Team for international competitions, which is
composed of about 20 students, and the participation in the International Tournament of
Young Mathematicians in 2013. After all these experiences I realized that I love the
exhilarating sensation of working on some problems while I am timed, and gaining some
prizes or not it is not the most important thing.
During my taking part in the National Team, which was my dream since I was in 8th grade, I
had the opportunity to attend some classes which were held by some of the best teachers
around the country and treated topics like Complex Numbers in Geometry, the BEST
theorem on graphs, and the distribution of prime numbers. By far, the most mesmerizing
experience was the participation at the International Tournament of Young Mathematicians,
in which my team took the 2nd prize, where I was able to meet important teachers and
ingenious students around the world. In March we were given 11 problems that were not
fully-solved and until July we had to do research work and indicate possible ways of further
investigations or partial solutions. During the competition itself we had to present the teams
work and to discuss with an opponent from another team our written material, in which way
the teams work can be improved and whether the partial solution was good or not. I
remember how frightened I was while I took my first steps on that stage before presenting our
work and how relaxed I was when everyone was listening with interest to what I was saying,
and after all I was doing what I like the most. This experience introduced me to the research
world, a land full of magnificent people with ingenious ideas from whom I can learn a lot.
Mathematics has also taught me a lot about life, and the writing I like the most about it is
Russell Bertrand essay The study of mathematics, in which the queen of sciences is an
ordered cosmos where pure thought can dwell in its natural home and is an art capable of
pure perfection. Logic, ordered thinking, coherence and hard working is what mathematics
offered me for my thirst for the unknown. Also, my free time activities, such as tennis,
badminton or watching movies improved my attention to details and my swiftness. I have
worked as a volunteer for two years in the House of Hope Iasi for disabled persons and one

year as a volunteer in the IQ club and have participated in the European project Euroscola
where I had the opportunity to be a vice-spokesperson after a speech in the European
Parliament.
I cannot wait to experiment my life as a student and as a future mathematician and I am
convinced that a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science at your university will
provide me with the necessary skills to fulfill my dreams.
