Course Objectives:
1. To understand the dimensions of wellness and the scientific basis upon which these
guidelines are founded.
2. To be able to critically analyze sources of health information and practically implement
sound scientific information into everyday life to improve health.
3. To understand the physiological basis of disease and how risk reduction strategies influence
disease development/treatment.
4. To understand the relationship between lifestyle choices and chronic disease.
5. To appreciate the importance of wellness as a lifetime pursuit.
Grading:
There will be three in class exams during the semester. Makeup exams (without penalty) are only given in
extreme emergencies (ex. Hospitalizations) and require documentation of the emergency. In the event of an
emergency, notify the instructor immediately! BUZZ card required to take all tests.
Makeup exams requested without documentation of a valid excuse will result in an automatic 25% reduction in
score per day (including non-class days) taken late. You will be required to take it the following class with
reduced points.
Periodically, assignments will be given in class. These will not be announced in advance and make-ups are not
permitted. Online quizzes will also be announced in class and late submissions will not be accepted.

Keep in mind that you earn your grade; I do not "give" it to you. I also reserve the right to deduct points
from anyones grade for being disruptive in class. Be on time and be attentive!!!!

Most homework and all quizzes will be done on CONNECT, the textbook publishers website. The code
for registering for the site is in your textbook., and may be used only once (therefore, each student must
register with his/her own code from a new text or purchase access online. See instructions posted on Tsquare)The web address for our course site is available below and on our T-square course site at the
Resources tab. WHEN YOU REGISTER for CONNECT, USE YOUR GT email address, NOT your
personal (e.g. yahoo, gamil etc..) address.

The best way to contact me is via email.

If you know you will miss a test, quiz or deadline because of your involvement in a school- sponsored
(e.g. athletic event, workshop, school related trips, etc..) contact me at least 5 days in advance to make
necessary arrangement to complete missed work. You may be asked to complete the work before your
absence , but this will depend on the situation.

Students will also have the opportunity to earn extra credit added to the final grade. All extra credit is due by
Nov. 22nd.
2 Point Extra Credit Options
1. Blood Profile AssessmentHave your blood drawn and cholesterol level analyzed. Instructions and forms
will be posted online on tsquare. Note: You must take signed forms with you to the Health Center!!!!

2. Take a Fall Semester Long GIT Fit class (one- and two-day workshops dont count) through the
Campus Recreation Center For credit, you must register & begin attending by: TBA
These courses are a great way to get in shape, make new friends and have fun. For a list of courses,
see the campus recreation center at http://www.crc.gatech.edu/gf/
Turn in a copy of your registration receipt for credit.
1 Point Extra Credit Options:
(1) Complete a Fitness Assessment at the Campus Recreation Center. ($5 fee required). Specific instructions
will be posted on t-square. Note: In order to be guaranteed an appt, you must sign up by Sept 14th.
(2) Blood donation. Take part in a campus blood donation effort through GT MOVE (mobilizing opportunity
for volunteer experience). Dates and specific instructions TBA.

(3) Attend a session in beginning weight training or cardiovascular training held through the Campus Recreation
Center ($5 fee required). Dates will be posted to t-square. To attend, you must sign up and pay your fee in
advance at the CRC front desk. Seats are limited. In order to be guaranteed an appt, you must sign up by
Sept 14th. After that date, you are not guaranteed a slot and if dates are full, you will have to choose
something else.
(4) Participate in a road race or intramural activity (For road race, turn in race number or copy of registration. If
participating in an intramural, you must turn in the signed intramural form as well as a copy of the team roster
with your name circled or highlighted. The roster is posted online through the CRC Intramural Officeno
roster, no credit! So make sure you print it off immediately. These are not kept online after the
intramural has ended.)
(5) Attend an extra credit film to be viewed in class the week before finals. (2 days at point per day)
Other options may become available during the semester and will be announced in class.
Total extra credit points you may earn = 4

Check t-square regularly and refer back as needed. All the details of the course including the lecture schedule
(listing topics/speakers/test dates), extra credit announcements, lecture outlines, etc. will be posted to the course
site.
