Share the Land will be bigger and better

PRESTON LOBZUN
INTERROBANG

Music Industry Arts annual

Share the Land event proves to continue its track record of one-upping
the previous year with bigger attendance and bigger scale. The event
is a big show where artists from the
program cover and perform original
renditions of popular Canadian hits,
paying tribute to award-winning
producer Jack Richardson, who
taught in the program until 2007.
The show is scheduled for February
11 at the Aeolian Hall, located at
795 Dundas St. near Rectory Street.
Tickets will be in the $15 to $20
range.
All proceeds of the event go to
the Heart and Stroke Foundation,
and the event planners are seeking
to clock over the previous years
near-$4,000 outcome.
Acts on the bill include secondyear MIA artists, such as DeSever,
Kira Longeuay, Graphic Nature,
TKP, Tracey Trace, Bailey Pelkman
and Emma Thompson.
There will be lots more too, so
thats just the tip of the iceberg,
said Tanner Simpson, one of the

brains behind the event.

We added a video element to
the show, which includes interviews with the bands and people
involved, Tanner said. Those will
be available on YouTube before and
after the show.
The clips will be played during
the show, which will give the audience some extra insight into the
production of the show and helping
those who are not in Music Industry
Arts become familiar with the acts
performing, he said.
Tanner says this will be the first
year that the show will introduce
some of the electronic artists in
MIA to the public, something that
goes largely unnoticed due to the
artists being humble and the electronic music scene being a digital
experience.
The electronic artists will intro
the night with an extensive hour
long set that follows the format of
the show in covering in their case
remixing Canadian music. With
the other artists involved, this is
sure to be one of the most diverse
years yet with their plans to live up
to the hype well under way.

Last year, students from Music Industry Arts put on yet another great
show at Aeolian Hall, featuring artists from the program.
On the projects production and
progress, Tanner has been really
thankful for the support from the
Fanshawe Student Union and his
peers, all of these people have proportionately placed lots of hours
into.
While everything has been going great, Tanner still feels that the

event could use some more exposure outside of the Fanshawe College/MIA circles.
He remains optimistic, however,
going on to say, This year were
going to hopefully change that, and
if you havent heard of Share the
Land yet, I guarantee you will hear
about it soon.

Quit smoking: Theres more up for grabs

STEPHANIE LAI

A contest being put on by Leave

The Pack Behind is just the sweet
kick in the behind to get smokers to
quit this year.
The prize? Up to $2,500.
Susan Chlipala is Fanshawes
student co-ordinator heading up the
campuss Leave The Pack Behind
program.
The Business Accounting graduate became involved because she
was interested in taking on a new
job experience.
Everything in my past job experiences were accounting- or managing-based, Chlipala said. This
one was a little different because
its a health program, and Ive never
had any program in my life that was
related to health.
Chlipala says student involvement has been minimal, but she
hopes the Would U Rather contest
will help change that.
Students can sign up for the
contest through a booth of ours,
she said. I [also] got involvement
by doing classroom presentations
were hoping to get more in the
New Year through the contest.
Fanshawe Student Unions administrative service manager Carol
Balzer says involvement can increase because contest participants

must sign up with an accountability

buddy.
They can also be in the contest,
she said. You get a buddy to make
sure you dont do the smoking.
Leave The Pack Behind is an almost 15-year-old government-funded organization present among
post-secondary campuses but it
only made its way into Fanshawe a
few years ago.
Instead of having nurses they
want to get students involved, Chlipala said. Students are not likely
to go clinics unless theyre sick or
they have to get the flu shot how
can you get that awareness outside
of the clinic?
Thats where we come in, she
said. We tell them, Yes there is
support at clinics. Yes there are quit
kits that you can use to reduce levels of nicotine or quit smoking. We
have more support for you, we have
these resources for you.
Would U Rather is a quit smoking contest for registered students
aged 18 to 28. Participants will fall
under one of four categories.
Quit For Good
Regular smokers pledge to quit
smoking and remain smoke-free.
Keep The Count
Regular smokers pledge to reduce their smoking by 50 per cent.

Internet and privacy dont go hand-in-hand

FRANCIS SIEBERT
INTERROBANG

A colleague once asked Jacquelyn Burkell if she had an account

on Google Docs. She did, but being
a researcher who focuses on users
and information, she made sure
Google had no information that
could identify her.
Oh, wait, the colleague said before she got a chance to respond. I
found it.
I thought, How the heck does
that happen? the associate professor in the Faculty of Information
and Media Studies at Western University said. [The email addresss]
got nothing to do with my name.
It turned out Burkell had unknowingly agreed that Google
share information about her across
its services Gmail, Search, Maps,
YouTube, Android and others. By
doing that, the company was able to
identify her.
Its not that she didnt want people to know her Gmail account.
Its that she didnt want Google to
know who she was. Its that she
didnt want Google and other online companies, like Amazon and
Facebook tracking her every online move.
Facebook changed and redesigned its privacy policies, and it
introduced Privacy Basics on January 1, making it easier for users to
know what the company does with
the information it collects about
them.
Privacy Basics teaches users

about what others see about them,

such as their posts and profile; how
others interact with them, such as
tagging, comments and likes; and
what users see, such as ads. It can
be accessed at facebook.com/about/
basics.
Facebook also redesigned its privacy policy page, making it more
accessible to users. But is it really a
step in the right direction?
Its a small step in the right direction, said David Christopher of
Open Media, a Canadian advocacy
organization that promotes transparent privacy policies on the web.
But he says making privacy policies more accessible shouldnt be
the end goal Facebook needs to
change its privacy policies in terms
of how they collect, use and sell private information to marketers.
Its good to see Facebook being
more transparent, but at the same
time, I think [its] got a lot more to
do if theyre really going to reassure people that their privacy will
be protected, Christopher said.
He says the social network needs
to strike a better balance between
safeguarding the privacy of their
users and monetizing its service.
Websites like Google and Facebook track their users across the
web using cookies, which are data
that websites store on their users
browsers.
A lot of the services we use online are free, Burkell said.
In reality, what were doing is
trading valuable personal informa-

tion in order to get access to these

services, she said.
For Burkell, Facebooks privacy policy is still problematic. She
says privacy policies are written so
that people cant understand them.
What Facebook is doing making
its privacy policy more accessible
is a step in the right direction, but
the information it is supposed to be
disclosing itself is still not understandable.
I was noticing on the splash
page for that policy, it says, As you
review our policy, keep in mind that
it applies to all Facebook brands,
products and services that do not
have a separate privacy policy or
that link to this policy, which we
call the Facebook Services or
Services, she said.
But what are those services?
When asked whether the privacy
policy covered the popular mobile application Instagram, which
Facebook purchased in 2012, she
couldnt find the answer.
The only thing thats clear, she
says, is that Facebook owns Instagram and that theres a relationship
between the two. She says the relationship probably involves sharing
data between the two services, but
thats not clear.
Its a massive amount of information when you look at it, she
said. Right now, youve asked a
question that certainly, while were
on the phone, Im not going to be
able to answer.

Ontario increasing financial aid for students

TINA TODARO
THE DIALOGUE

Ontarios continued development

of post-secondary loan and debt reduction strategies, have resulted in
a loan increase and an additional
loan repayment option for students.
Helping post-secondary students
repay their loans is part of the government of Ontarios economic
plan, according to the Ministry of
Training, Colleges and Universities
(MTCU) in a press release on December 8.
The Ontario Student Assistance
Program will increase the student
loan limit by $5 for the 2015-16
school year, to $155 per week for
full-time students depending on
their marital status.
While Ontario is adjustingstudent aid amounts to compensate
for inflation, in the 2015-16 school
year the province will cap student
debts to no more than $7,400 for a
two-term academic year.
Ontario is committed to making
post-secondary education accessi-

ble based on a students ability to

learn, not their ability to pay. By
taking important steps to increase
the amount of financial aid available
to students, improve flexibility in
the repayment process and tie debt
caps to inflation, our government is
ensuring that our student assistance
programs remain sustainable and
can continue to help all qualified
students attend college or university,
regardless of their income, according to MTCU Minister Reza Moridi.
The debt caps will also increase
with inflation each year with repayable debt remaining at 60 per cent
of the maximum amount of financial aid available to the students.
By indexing Ontarios maximum student aid levels annually to
inflation, this will provide students
with more information to help plan
for their post-secondary expenses,
said Matthew Stewart, president of
the College Student Alliance. At
the same time, the Ontario Student
Loan Rehabilitation Program will
allow past borrowers to restore

credit levels to good standing.

According to MTCU, the 30 Per
Cent Off Tuition Grant helped almost 230,000 students save $1,780
in the 2013-14 school year.
The grant is only applicable to
students applying to college, university or a private college directly
from high school, with special eligibility exceptions for people with
disabilities or for fourth or fifth
year co-op students.
Ontario also introduced the new
Ontario Student Loan Rehabilitation Program this month, which
will help students who have defaulted on prior loans, bring their
loans back into good standing.
We are pleased that Ontario has
joined the other provinces in offering a debt rehabilitation program for
students, which is especially helpful for students who are returning to
school after being in the workforce,
providing a clearer path into higher
education. said Jen Carter, president of the Ontario Undergraduate
Student Alliance.

Third-year Western student has made a buzz in social media with his
uncanny recreations of famous celebrities on his Instagram account.

LONDON Mina Gerges may

not be a celebrity, but he can certainly pose like one.
The third-year media and the
public interest student has become
an Internet sensation by recreating
iconic images of stars like Beyonce
and Kim Kardashian and sharing
them on social media. In the last few
weekshis Instagram account, @
keepingupwithmina, has been featured on Buzzfeed, Elle, Cosmopolitian, Smosh and Style List Canada.
Ever since I was four years
old I can remember sneaking into
my moms closet and stealing her
clothes and shoes I would just
dress up and try to be Posh Spice,
Gerges says.
Gergeshas been posting these
images on his Instagram account
for months. He started the account byPhotoshopping himself
into red-carpet events or pictures
withpop culture celebrities over a
year and a half ago.
With36,000 followers currently,
the number continues to increase as
Gerges gets more and more online
attention. Though not the first Instagram account to recreate celebrity
photos, hes quickly becoming the
most prominent.
He also says that creating these
images has allowed him to realize
how unrealistic the body proportions are in media. Further, Gerges
says that these images have helped
him become more comfortable with
his own body.
I lost 100 pounds before, so
body image is a huge thing for me
posting these pictures has helped
me be more comfortable in my skin.
Im willing to do this in front of a
camera and not worry about people
pointing out my flaws, Gerges explains.
While his story has been some
time in the making, he thanks Western for his growth as a person.
When I came toWestern I was
still in the closet, I was terrified of
expressing myself. Pride Western
helped me a lot. I remember going
to the first Pride Western meeting
during my first year, and I remember thinking, theres more people
like me I realized that its okay

to be gay, Gerges says.

Though fun and inspiring, taking
the photos arentexactlyeasy for
Gerges. The process, which takes
roughly two hours, includes putting on fake nails, choosing a wig
and painting different aspects of his
costume. Once the photo is taken,
Gerges works his magic on Photoshop and its ready for the masses.
Im very aware that this is a 15
seconds of fame type thing, so Im
not letting it get to my head. All the
support has been great, but Im using it as an outlet to show future employees how creative I am and the
kind of barriers Im trying to break
the kind of positive body image
that Im hoping to spread, he says.
Although Gerges has been receiving a lot of attention for his
photos, he says he would be doing it
regardless, simply because of how
happy it makes him.
This success, however, comes at
a price.
People were telling me to go kill
myself, just to stop and that Im fat.
I really had to realize that Im not
going to allow myself to be affected by cyber bullying and I dont do
this for anyone else I do this for
myself and Im not going to stop,
Gerges says.
Because the photos are exclusively of female celebrities, the
third-year student has also been
criticizedby those in the gay community accusing him of promoting feminine stereotypes.
I have people saying that I give
gay people a bad name, or Im too
gay and things like that. I think
thats part of the problem its
okay to break these hetero-normative expectations. Thats the barrier
I want to overcome, Gerges tells.
Ultimately, he says hes able to
push these boundaries thanks to the
campus culture here.
A lot of the person I am today
has come from my experience at
Western were really lucky to
go to a school thats accepting and
does its best to offer services that
really help you discover who you
are. My school has done so much
for me and I wouldnt be this creative outrageous person if I wasnt
in an environment that welcomes
you regardless of your differences.

VIA Rail might be a thing of the past with news of high-speed rail motoring
from Windsor to Toronto.

New rail way will

speed through London
STEPHANIE LAI
INTERROBANG

The Ministry of Transportation

announced December 5 that the
province will be moving forward
with building a high-speed rail
line, which will connect Windsor,
London, Kitchener-Waterloo and
Toronto.
In the press release, the government states that the rail line will
improve travel options, reduce
travel time and create jobs by getting people moving.
The railway is part of a 10-year,
$29 billion transit and infrastructure plan called Moving Ontario
Forward.
Mayor Matt Brown feels nothing
but excitement about the upcoming
project.
This is fantastic news for London, he said in the release. Highspeed rail will benefit many vital
economic sectors in London. We
look forward to working with the
province on this initiative.
Ajay Woozageer, Senior Bilingual Media Liaison Officer for the
Ministry says the build will support
the economy.
High-speed rail would support
the economy by helping to connect
knowledge and innovation hubs
to international gateways, including Pearson Airport, he said in an
email.
By examining options for a new
Windsor-Toronto high-speed rail
corridor, the Ministry of Transportation would evaluate state-of-theart transportation technology for future investments to improve travel
times and support growth in these
innovation hubs.
Woozageer says this new railway
while not directly involved with
VIA Rail will increase ridership
within other communities.
VIA Rail provides inter-city regional rail services in Ontario, he
said. This project will be evaluating high-speed rail, not conventional passenger rail services.
Potential ridership from different communities [like Kitchener-Waterloo] in the study area will
be evaluated to help determine potential routes and station locations.
Woozageer says the railway
should bring benefits to Ontario,
including:
Enhanced business competitiveness and productivity
Faster travel times
Increased transportation mode
choices
Reduced GHG emissions associ-

ated with interregional travel

New transportation technologies,
which provide economic development opportunities for Ontario (e.g. manufacture of rolling
stock, etc.)
Supports knowledge-based economic development opportunities in the Toronto to Windsor
corridor
First step in the development of
a potential HSR network in Ontario that may eventually connect
to neighbouring provinces and
states
The high-speed railway will cut
down travel times indeed. At the
present, travel from Windsor to Toronto takes just over four hours.
Woozageer explained the difference high-speed will make.
Conventional rail (e.g. VIA
Rail) typically operates at speeds
between 100 km/h and 160 km/h
and has more frequent stops, he
said. High-speed rail operates at
speeds over 200 km/r.
London being one of the stops,
Londoners can look forward to being involved in some way during
the process.
The City of London is the largest southwestern Ontario municipality and a significant innovation
hub in the province, he said. We
want to ensure we are making it
easier for both workers and students
to travel.Investing in public transportation is part of the economic
plan for Ontario.
The province will begin to consult with First Nations and start
discussions in the New Year with
a wide variety of groups, including municipal partners and business on how best to move forward
to ensure they are engaged early in
process. There will be several opportunities for the public and other
stakeholders to become engaged in
the project throughout the environmental assessment process.
Building of the railway will increase job opportunities in the London area, though a precise number
has yet to be determined.
Building high speed rail is part of
the governments long-term transit
and infrastructure plan for Ontario,
said Woozageer. High-speed rail
will support knowledge-based economic development and job growth
in the innovation centres throughout
the Toronto to Windsor corridor, as
well as provide new jobs to support
the construction and operation of
the high speed rail service, and the
manufacture of rolling stock.

Dalhousie suspends 13 male

students from clinicNEWS
work
RACHEL WARD
CUP LABOUR BUREAU CHIEF

HALIFAX (CUP) Thirteen

dentistry students at Dalhousie University may still be able to attend
classes next week, despite being
suspended from degree-required
clinic work. Dalhousie President
Richard Florizone said in a press
release January 5, only hours before a community protest against
the treatment of the victims, the
suspension only affects the publicly-attended dental clinics. Dentistry
classes have been postponed until
January 12.
This sanction follows revelations
of misogynistic Facebook posts targeting female dentistry students.
The scandal broke out mid-December, when sexually explicit Facebook posts from the 2015 DDS
Gentlemens Club Facebook group
were made public by the CBC and
the Coast. The posts show male
dentistry students voted on which
female student to have hate sex
with. Others joked about getting
women unconscious with chloroform or nitrous oxide, in order to
bang until stress is relieved.
Another man defined penis as,
the tool used to wean and convert
lesbians and virgins into useful,
productive members of society.
Another member replied, saying,
by productive im (sic) assuming
you mean it inspires them to become chefs, housekeepers, babysitters, etc.
Jacob Boon, city editor at the
Coast, reported receiving private
Facebook messages showing members of the group discussing the
media storm. Some suggested apologising, reported the Coasts Boon,
but not all: Fuck an apology, said
one.
Four Dalhousie professors submitted a formal complaint using
the Student Code of Conduct on

December 21. Francoise Baylis, a

bioethics professor at the university, said this process is transparent,
would result in a clear decision of
innocent or guilty and not require
the women to publicize their names.
The women have so far remained
anonymous in media reports.
Instead, Florizone is proceeding
with a restorative justice procedure
through the sexual harassment policy. That, in part, involved the men
and women meeting to resolve
complaints between the parties.
The process would be secret and
result in no decision on whether or
not sexual harassment happened
at all. Community members have
voiced their disagreement on social media using the hashtag #dalhousiehateswomen.
The partial suspension today is
part of a second process using an
Academic Standards Class Committee consisting of dentistry professors who teach fourth-year students. A question and answer page
about the decision on Dals website
said the committee will assess each
student individually to see whether
he meets professional requirements.
Florizones press release said this
committee may create a remediation plan, which could recommend
academic dismissal.
There must be significant consequences for those that endorse
and enable misogyny on campus,
wrote Florizone.
Baylis said the professors want
their complaint to be acknowledged
and the proper procedure followed.
If their complaint is followed under
the code of conduct, Baylis said the
president could issue an immediate
suspension from classes.
Every single student that comes
to Dalhousie should be aware that
we have a commitment to a safe and
supportive learning environment,

she said. At this point Im in a position that Im at least questioning

whether thats true for the fourthyear dentistry students.
Baylis said if sitting next to one
of the men in class, the victims
might be imagining all kinds of
things, right? How is that providing
me with an appropriate environment in which I can focus on my
studies?
The decision was announced the
morning of January 5, the first day
back for students. Florizone said
in a press conference, the decision
was actually made December 22,
but postponed due to concerns several men were at risk of self-harm.
The question and answer page said
the school wanted to give students
appropriate in-person support including counselling.
Its not really much of a consequence for the Dalhousie dentistry students, but it looks good that
Dalhousie is taking some action,
said student Madison Foster, who
attended the community protest.
Student Hannah Milley was also
there. Shes a board member of
South House, the student-funded
gender resource centre, which has
helped organized two protests so far.
What about our mental health?
she said. What about the people
who had to spend their holidays
worrying about if theyll be forced
back into classrooms with the
classmates who threatened to rape
them?
Dalhousie also launched a new
page on its website called Culture
of Respect, which included the
question and answer page about
the scandal. It said details will be
released soon of a presidential task
force related to this event.

Christianity and exclusion This isnt your

RUMOURS OF GRACE
MICHAEL VEENEMA

Recently a woman visited my church and

made a point of speaking with me. She said
she appreciates the people of the church and
that she appreciates people of every faith.
In the end, she said, Its all about community and caring for people. Thats what religion is all about. Community.
You can find it in a Christian church, certainly, but you can also find it in a mosque, a
synagogue, Hindu temple or Buddhist monastery.
My acquaintance has resolved a major difficulty that many have with Christianity: the
problem of exclusivity. She did not like the
Christian claim that it is the one true faith
while other faiths are not, making it arrogant
and exclusive. We can breathe a sigh of relief
since we now know that the differences are
only on the surface. In this day and age, she
kindly lectured me, who has time anyway for
exclusivity?
Hundreds of millions of people do. Not for
exclusivity, but for Christianity. The faith is
growing.
At the beginning of the 20th century, one
per cent of South Koreas population was
Christian. Today, it is 40 per cent. Church
attendance and Christian faith are holding steady in Canada, and while traditional
churches have seen decline, others that are
willing to repackage the message of Jesus for
people today often do well.
In many parts of the developing world
where Christianity is legal churches thrive.
A few weeks ago, I visited a new church
near downtown Toronto. There was no one
older than 40; most were under 30. Three

months ago, that church did not exist. Now it

meets in a rented theatre.
The people who are entering the tent of
Christianity do not believe that all religions
are basically about community and that the
differences between them are superficial.
It would come as a surprise to them as it
would to any informed Muslim, Jew, Hindu
or Buddhism that the unique beliefs that
separate their faith doesnt believe in exclusion from other faiths are just accessories.
Speaking about my own Christian faith
the core teachings of the faith, Christs death
and resurrection are not just window dressing on a religion that is in essence about community. They are the window. They are the
core. Community arises from commitment to
the core. But it isnt the core itself.
As it turns out, the only people who believe
that all faiths are essentially the same once you
strip away the beliefs that make them unique
are people who seem to believe none of the
faiths they claim to understand. They appear
to be constructing a faith of their own the
faith that all faiths are essentially about community. The proofs for such a faith are pretty
thin, I think. And ironically, those who hold
them are a fairly exclusive group, since believers in Jesus or Mohammed or the Buddha
who try to be informed are not among them.
This is not to say that we Christians havent done our share of excluding people; this
is no credit to us, to Christianity or to God.
However, if one is willing to look, one will
see in Christianity a multi-cultural inclusive
though struggling global community.
This is what Jesus commanded his followers
to create.
My friend does still visit my church from
time to time and whenever she does, she gets
plenty of hugs from those of us who know her
well and love her. I think thats what keeps
her coming back; thats what makes her feel
included.

The Ontario Ombudsman is the closest

thing you can get to a political superhero, and
thanks to Bill 8, hes about to get a whole new
set of public sector organizations to investigate. The bill is a reimagining of The Public
Sector and MPP Accountability and Transparency Act proposed by Kathleen Wynne as
a desperate bid to remain in office following
the gas plant scandal.
The role of the Office of the ombudsman
is to ensure transparency in the operation of
public services pertaining to politics, healthcare and education. Andr Marin took the
office in 2005 and immediately began to
establish the most forthcoming social media
identity held by a public official in Canada.
The ombudsman has already visited London a couple of times to respond to allegations that city council members were having
clandestine meetings outside of City Hall,
allegations he determined to be true.
The province has given Marin additional
powers to examine government institutions
and officials with the passing of Bill 8. The
content of the bill broadens the ombudsmans mandate to include universities, school
boards and hospitals.
The hospital oversight will come in the
form of a patient ombudsman who would not
be an independent officer of the legislature,
but simply an individual working under the
ministry of health, a key issue for anyone concerned with hospital reform. The additional
oversight will fill a major gap in the structure
for holding public-sector individuals and organizations accountable for their actions.

The provincial NDP was the only group to

vote against the bill, declaring that it failed to
address several of the partys key concerns.
The new level of oversight will give ombudsman Marin the ability to influence how
over $30 billion is allocated for public services. Its unlikely that Marin is going to go
on a slash and burn mission to get the public
purse under control, however, the presence
of an investigatory body with the ability to
operate independently is likely to promote a
culture of transparency anyways.
One of the goals of the bill is to give Marin
the ability to prevent the kind of funding misallocation that has been the hallmark of the
Ontario Liberal government. Premiere Wynne was forced to promise some form of oversight after the gas plant scandal, and it comes
in the form of Bill 8.
Metaphorically speaking, its like the fox
convincing the chickens to vote for her, because shes going to give the keys to the henhouse to the ombudsman.
When the office of the ombudsman was
investigating the meeting of Londons city
councillors at Billy Ts restaurant, former
councillor Stephen Orser made it no secret
that he thought Marin should keep his nose
out of their business.
Several municipalities have complained
about the ombudsmans investigations for being trivial or unnecessary, perfectly illustrating why the ombudsman should have additional oversight. When publicly elected and
paid individuals are flagrantly breaking the
provincial transparency laws and then complaining about the investigation. The entitlement has reached new levels.

Fashion retailer Old Navy does carry plus-sized clothing, but a lot of it is hidden in the back.

Plus-size women second-class

SPORTS&LEISURE
LISA KELLY

If youve ever shopped at a big brand store

that sells both plus and straight sizes, you
may have asked the question, Where are the
plus sizes? Theyre hidden in the back of
the store or tucked away on the second floor
of the store. Why? Because fat isnt cool.
If a store actually carries plus sizes, a
plus-size woman must consider herself lucky
that the store would even cater to her. Many
clothing companies actually refuse to sell
plus size clothing such as; Abercrombie &
Fitch and Lululemon to name a few.
Robin Lewis, co-author of The New Rules
of Retail, says Mike Jeffries, CEO of Abercrombie & Fitchs mindset is a reason for a
lack of plus-sized clothing in his store.
He doesnt want his core customers to see
people who arent as hot as them wearing his
clothing, Lewis said. People who wear his

clothing should feel like theyre one of the

cool kids.
While the average womans dress size is
14, Abercrombie & Fitchs size offering for
women does not go past a size 10. Lululemon
offers up to a size 12, but former employees
have stated that the largest sizes size 10 and
12 are relegated to a separate area at the
back of the store, left clumped and unfolded
under a table.
Chip Wilson, CEO of Lululemon, has a
reason for not going past a size 12.
It takes 30 per cent more fabric to create
plus-size clothes, meaning he would have
to charge a higher price for them. Wilson
says that was something he would never
do. Plus-size people are sensitive, and the
company would feel intense fallout from the
community.
Sensitive? Thats a pretty broad generalization of an entire community of women.
While it does take 30 per cent more material, the reasoning is flawed. It requires far
more material to create a size eight pair of
pants, as opposed to a size zero, but there is
no price difference.

Why must a plus-size woman pay more?

Why must a plus-size woman be forced to
scour the back of the store, or the bottom of
the pile, like a second-class citizen?
In a report run by the NDP Group, 56 per
cent of plus-size women say that it is hard
finding plus-size clothing with the same level of quality as regular-size clothing and yet,
plus-size clothing is ridiculously marked up.
Retailers can treat plus-size woman this
way, because they have few alternatives.
In the same report, 63 per cent of plus-size
women reported that shopping for plus-size
clothing is more stressful than shopping for
regular-size clothing, and 62 per cent said
that they have trouble finding plus-sized
clothing styles they want.
Brands like Old Navy that offer both
straight and plus-sizes often only go up to
a size 18 in stores, forcing any customer that
is too big to shop online, rather than gracing their stores. Old Navy also charges its
female plus-size customers $10 to $15 more
for jeans, while plus-size men do not experience the same markup.
Old Navy says that the increase in price is

I couldnt think of another subject that contrasts more with my firmly held notions of the
world or so I thought.
Ive never considered myself a dollars and
cents kind of gal. Instead, as a student of the
social sciences, I regularly find myself engaged in debates of whats fair, whats just
and whats right, with capitalism often being
labelled as the enemy. Economics doesnt
have time for those kinds of value judgements. Instead, it is a science that deliberately detaches itself from emotion in favour of
logic and objectivity.
Economics is concerned with the study of
efficient resource allocation and is rooted on
the dual premise that a) resources are scarce
and b) our wants will always outweigh what
is available. With this in mind, economic theory proposes that free market capitalism and
trade as opposed to systems based on government intervention and restrictions is the
best way to address both of the above issues,
believe it or not.
Trying to wrap my head around all this at
first was quite difficult. But the more I invested into educating myself on the topic, the
more I came to understand that I, like many
who have deeply held beliefs about the evils
of capitalism, made a critical error when
forming my opinion I used reductionist
thinking.

Lets assume a craze breaks out over the

latest widget produced by Company B. Because of the industry-specific nature of the
widget, lets also assume that it is exclusively
available at a single specialty store in your
given locale. As a consumer, you decide to
wait a couple of weeks to obtain your widget to avoid the long lines at the store. Your
friend Betty tells you she was able to buy hers
for $75 last week, but when you head over to
the store today you see the same widget she
just got has now been marked up to $110.
If you subscribe to reductionist thinking,
you will instantly conclude the storeowner,
having acknowledged he has a monopoly
over the sale of the widget in the area, is being driven by greed to line his/her pockets a
little deeper. An economist would ask you to
consider what other factors are at play.
Is it possible that the popularity of the widget is not just specific to your locale, but instead is a worldwide phenomenon, which is
resulting in an imbalance between supply and
demand, and the manufacturers of the widget cannot keep up and so have accordingly
raised its per-unit costs to the vendors?
Is it possible that the widgets country of
origin has decided to raise the fees associated
with the importation of its product, resulting
in lower profit margins for the storeowner
should he/she not alter his/her established

a result of unique fabrics and flattering design elements. But these unique fabrics and
flattering design elements are also included
in the straight-sized clothing.
Although there are brands that specialize
in plus-size clothing, these brands are also
guilty of overcharging their customers. To
buy a basic black T-shirt in a store like Penningtons, the price ranges from $24 to $26.
LETTERS
TO THE
EDITOR
At high-end
plus size
retailers like Adfsuletters@fanshawec.ca
dition Elle, the price of a basic T-shirt can
range to almost $40. For prices like that, its
expected that the quality would be amazing,
however, it is no different than the cheaply
made clothing offered by Old Navy. Only 39
per cent of women report that they prefer to
buy from a brand that specialized in plus-size
clothing.
Plus-size women dont want to be segregated from straight-sized women, forced to
shop at a special store, because regular stores
wont sell to them. They want equality, fair
prices and better styles. Plus-size women are
not second-class citizens.
Plus-size fashion is a $14 billion industry.
Fashion retailers, show some respect.

Fork in the Road: Thinking small has big consequences

FORK IN THE ROAD
ROSE CORA PERRY

I recently decided to take up the study of

economics in my spare time. Whenever I tell
others, Im confronted first with astoundment, which is followed shortly with Dear
God, why? or a similar question, equally imbued with a sense of horror.
While my brainwaves have always seemed
to be more in tide with my artistic passionate side, Im a firm believer that an important
component of life satisfaction derives from
ongoing learning and personal development.
In other words, having a sense of fulfillment
in ones life comes from far more than the accumulation of various material items and/or
the accomplishment of various life stages and
career milestones. To be challenged is to live.
To feel stimulated and be forced to reconfigure your viewpoints based on new learnings
is to be alive. To willingly explore new areas of yourself and the world at large is to be
mature. To never conclude you know enough
or everything for that matter is just the
beginning, and an important one at that.
So why economics of all things? Because

price point?
Is it possible that a competitor from another industry has contracted the use of the
same natural resources used in the production
of the widget for an alternate use at a higher
price, therefore driving up the costs of those
natural resources across the board?
Was the original price point set as a
time-sensitive promotion where the store
owner was willing to take a lower profit margin in favour of pushing more product during
the first two weeks of the products release?
Just as its denotation would suggest, reductionist thinking causes you to think too small.
The irony of all this, for me, is the fact that
the reason I first got involved with writing
editorial pieces is because I love tearing apart
issues from different angles.
Beyond learning something valuable myself, my study into the realm of production
and consumption has a valuable lesson for all
of you:
Now, more than ever, we live in a highly
interconnected and integrated world wherein
actions undergone by individuals who seem
a world away have real consequences right
here at home. Economics, therefore, is not
simply the study of production and consumption habits. Rather, it is a way of thinking in
which one acknowledges just how much everything is tied together.

Frances Gages Discovery of Hands can be found outside of the F-Building.

A Discovery at Fanshawe College

DAVID DIMITRIE
INTERROBANG

For the past two years Ive

walked by a twice life-sized statue
of a woman in a meditative pose, in
front of F-Building on my way to
the class. The nearby alcove, which
is surrounded by the Hull Family
Gardens, makes a peaceful home
for this statue. The gardens and statue are a peaceful contrast to busy
hallways and technology, which
pervades every part of campus life.
An employee at the college told
me that Internationally acclaimed
Canadian sculptor Frances Gage
had created the statue named Discovery of the Hands. It had been
created for the Ontario Vocational
Centre, London three years before
Fanshawe College existed. It was
delivered to the London campus in
1964, placed in an impressive pool/
plaza closer to Oxford Street where
the College Presidents office was
once located.
In 2007, the statue was relocated and rededicated by former
college President Howard Rundle
in its present location in front of
F-Building.
Gage attended the rededication.
Photos of her and Discovery of
the Hands can be seen in Richard
Bains Photo Book of Fanshawe
College in the college library. Its
understandable why so few students
know much about the sculpture in
its present location. However, 2014
would have been the 50th year that
Discovery of the Hands has been
on our campus.
Gage is now 90 years old.
In 2007, Gage said Discovery of
Hands symbolized strength, spirituality and connectedness through
different media. In 2009, Alan D.
Butcher completed a biography of

Frances Gage, which gives greater

insight into her life and the hundreds of works that she completed
in her lifetime, such as The Woman, which was unveiled in 1972 by
former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot
Trudeau in the foyer of Womens
College Hospital in Toronto.
Gage was born in Windsor, ON
in 1924. In her early years, her
creative but nurturing personality came through as she spoke of
her brother and sisters and the cats
and dogs that she longed to adopt.
Later in life, she would seldom be
without one as a loyal companion,
and she spoke of an earlier desire to
study veterinary medicine.
In an email interview, she spoke
of her love of playing in the mud in
the Chedoke Creek near Hamilton,
when her family made the move to
the area. She said that these times as
a child helped awaken her creativity and spark her lifes work. Gage
made the most of the opportunities
that came to her, throughout her life.
We often hear about lack of opportunities for young adults today.
Was it any easier over 60 years
ago when Gage was able to realize a dream and enter the Ontario
College of Art? She served several
years in the Womens Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS)
during the final years of the Second
World War and for several years afterwards when she worked for little
pay on a failed attempt to design a
new Canadian flag?
She was admitted to the Ontario
College of Art in Toronto in part
because of her military service as a
WREN. The friends she made and
the skills she learned at OCA continued throughout her entire life. A
statue stands today, in front of the
Cambridge Central Library, which

Gage created in honour of all the

WRENS during the Second World
War. It was dedicated in 1972 and it
is called The Jenny.
Gage went on to study in New
York and in Paris at Lcole des
beaux arts through scholarships,
work and assistance from patrons
of the arts. Again, Gage made the
most of her opportunities.
While Gage sculpted such famous pieces as The Woman still
on display in Womans College
Hospital, Jenny, Discovery of
Hands, Rosamund and hundreds
more, she should be known as person too. The artist, the sister, the
daughter, the friend, the businesswoman and the stubborn creator
cannot be separated. They are unified, like a body of work.
Gage had a natural ability to
make deep lifelong friends. In
Butchers Unlikely Paradise: The
life of Frances Gage he notes:
Frances was unconsciously good
at meeting and making them friends
without being aware of it. She was
a world-class networker before the
word networking became current.
Today, Gage is quite content.
She lives in Cobourg and as usual
she still has many friends. She still
tutors, teaches, sketches, paints,
sculpts and creates. In her words,
if you stop your creative insight,
you will fade away and die. I believe she meant those words for students in all fields of study.
Take a look at Gages sculpture
the next time you go by F-Building.
Gages spirit is still in its design
and meaning. She once said about
Discovery of the Hands, that my
intention was to bring a sense of
peace; meditation for peace if you
will.

One of the most sought-after, yet

daunting eye makeup look is the
classic smokey eye. It is dark, sultry and adds that elegance to almost
anyone who wears it. It can be done
with pretty much any colour combination, but to achieve that classic
look, all you need is black, brown
and white.
When doing a smokey eye, I recommend doing your complexion
at the very end since you are using
such dark shades of eye shadow that
fallout is definitely a possibility. If
you insist on doing your complexion first, apply a lot of loose powder
under the eye so it will catch any
fallout and then you can just brush
it all off once you are finished.
The first step is to make sure
the eye area is fully prepped. Use
a non-greasy eye cream and then
apply an eye shadow primer the
NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow
Base is incredible for this look. The
primer will lessen the amount of
fallout during the application, will
intensify the colour and will make
it last longer.
If you want the smokey eye to
be intense, I recommend applying
a black cream eye shadow to the
eyelids, keeping the darkest part at
the lash line and then fading it upwards to the crease of the eye. Next
apply a matte black powder shadow
NARS Pandora on top of the
cream shadow, again keeping the

darkest part at the lash line. Another

tip when applying powder shadow
is to press it on rather than using a
swiping motion. This will build up
the pigment more effectively and
will reduce fallout.
Now to create the smokey effect,
use a matte dark brown eye shadow with a ponytail brush and begin
to blend it through the crease of
the eyelid, almost in a windshield
wiper motion. Make sure you are
blending a little bit on top of the
black shadow so you get a seamless
look. Once you are happy with the
blending, apply a bone white shadow on the brow bone.
A lot of people will stop here
and not do the lower lash line, but
it needs to be balanced in order
for the smokey eye to be properly
achieved. Line the entire bottom
lash line with the cream black shadow and press on the black powder
shadow on top of that. Now, taking
a smaller blending brush, create the
smokey effect with the dark brown
shadow just like you did on the eyelid. Lastly, apply the white shadow
directly underneath.
To complete the look, tightline
the upper lash line with a black eyeliner and then line the lower waterline. To add more glamour, apply
some false lashes and mascara and
then you are done.
The smokey eye can look elegant for special occasions and can
be easy to achieve with a little bit
of practice. The key is to make sure
everything is blended so no hard
edges can be seen. Once you have
this basic method down pat, you
can start experimenting with other
colours, glitters and shapes.

The year 2014 was a big one for space news. Stephen Hawking opposed his black hole theory.

The year 2014 was a good year

for space enthusiasts. Between Stephen Hawking negating his black
hole theory with new grey holes,
and the flurry of rocket travel in the
latter part of the year, the previous
year gave thousands of hours of research for the world to pore over.
In the first six months, we saw
a number of asteroid encounters,
some closer than others. In early
March, three separate incidents
within two days came between the
Earth and the moon, the smallest measuring 25 ft. across while
the largest came in at 100 ft. the
length of a Boeing 737.
On January 31, the National
Aeronautics and Space Administrations (NASA) Curiosity rover photographed Earth and the moon from
Mars for the first time. Its a small
solar system.
NASAs Lunar Atmosphere and
Dust Environment Explorer probe
orbited the moon a final 100 times
just one kilometre from the surface,
then it was intentionally crashed on
April 18.
In May, a completely new meteor shower was born The Camelopardalids, originating from the
recently-discovered Comet 209P/
LINEAR.
In July, Russia launched an experiment containing five geckos,
testing how vertebrates developed
in microgravity. The geckos gained
viral status when the experiment

lost radio contact. Contact was

re-established, but it was determined that the geckos froze when
the heater failed.
Indias first probe to Mars, the
Mangalyaan, successfully reached
its target on September 24 costing
less than Hollywood blockbuster
Gravity becoming only the third
nation to succeed in reaching Mars.
NASAs MAVEN probe also arrived at the red planet three days
before Mangalyaan, studying the
Martian atmosphere.
The U.S. Air Force X-37B unmanned spacecraft returned after
675 days in orbit. Not much else is
known about this mysterious craft,
cue conspiracy theories.
A once-in-a-million-year event,
the Comet Siding Spring sailed past
Mars on October 19, giving new information about the solar systems
composition roughly 4.6 billion
years ago.
The largest sunspot recorded in
24 years was observed on October
22, with a diameter larger than Jupiter. Its been a quite active year for
the sun, including several X Class
solar flares right after this event.
The Antares rocket exploded
over its launch pad, destroying
5,000 lbs. of International Space
Station-bound supplies on October
28. Three days later, the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo ripped itself
apart over the Mojave Desert, killing one test pilot.
The ESA successfully became
the first to land a probe on a comet.

The Rosetta orbiter carried its Philae lander to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, touching down
on November 12.
NASA launched its first Orion
capsule atop the United Launch
Alliance Delta 4 Heavy rocket, the
vehicle sending humans to Mars in
2030. Delayed a day after faulty
valves remained closed, Orion had
a successful launch on December
5, successfully travelling through
the Van Allen belt a high radiation field surrounding the Earth
then splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

Everything Elon Musk has done
with SpaceX. This man deserves
an article alone, but between the
first private company hired to send
humans into space for NASA to
his bold plans for Mars colonization, this has been a good year for
SpaceX, even with a failed test in
July.
In addition to these discoveries,
a vast amount of data from 2013
was analyzed from dozens of experiments, giving even more new
information. But thats just the beginning between massive solar
flares hitting Earth in September
and super moons all summer, there
was so much to talk about during
the last year.
Food, cosmetics, racecar technology it can all be linked to research
and discoveries in space. So go out
and discover something you love.

Heart Attack Kids made a splash

on the London punk scene this
year, playing some intense and loud

in a good way oozing in bouncy

keeping its punk edge at the forefront.
As Ive mentioned in previous articles, being in a two-piece band is
hard. It takes a lot of power to hold

You need to cover the bottom end,
the top end, the vocals, the percussion, and still deliver it all without
being sloppy. Gear plays a huge
part in this, and I find that sheer
loudness is one of those things you
need in this kind of music to garner

Figuring out what your body shape is can be helpful when choosing what pieces will look the most attering.

LISA KELLY

Every New Year, we vow to lose

those last 10 pounds or three dress
sizes. Most times, instead of taking a healthy route to keeping our
resolutions, we go on crazy fad diets, allowing ourselves the dietary
intake of a rabbit, or we consume
Tic Tacs. Every year we do this,
and what do we have to show for
it? Nothing, except the same 10
pounds we tried to lose last year
plus interest. Instead of treating our
bodies this way, we need to learn
to love the bodies we have. That
sounds easier said than done, but
once you start dressing for your
body type, its easy to love the skin
youre in.
Triangle
If you have narrow shoulders and
wide hips, youre a triangle.
You have a serious ass-et on the
dance floor. Just stay away from
those low rise jeans, and youre
golden.
Do:
Belts are great for accentuating
your waist
A-line skirts are most flattering
Boot cut trousers create balance
Heels will help elongate legs
Ruffled top to create volume
Wearing clothes that make you
look broader up top will help create balance
Dont:
Low rise denim
Detail on back pockets: pocket
flaps, embroidery, etc.
Stay away from light colours on
the bottom
Inverted triangle
If your bottom half is smaller than
your top half, and your shoulders
are wider than your hips, youre an
inverted triangle.
Youve been blessed with strong
shoulders in the fight for that coveted sale handbag you rein victori-

ous, however, you should probably

stay away from shoulder pads.
Do:
Soften the shoulders with soft
knits keep cardigans open
Tailored and structured items
are your friend. Knit blazers are
great for a structured look that
has some give
Wear straight leg and boot cut
trousers to create balance
Wear bold patterns on the bottom
Dont:
Detailing on shoulders
Cropped jackets
Bold patterns on top
Rectangle
Do you have a straight shoulder
line with straight hips and bottom?
Chances are, youre a rectangle.
Youve got a body that can rock
a great pair of skinny jeans. Just
remember to avoid baggy or boxy
styles theyre not doing anything
for your figure.
Do:
Create a waist. A pencil skirt with
a belt will help create curves
Choose fitted blazers to help define your waist
Choose soft knits
Look for feminine elements in
your clothing
Dont:
Baggy styles and too wide flares
Straight lines from top to bottom
Boxy jackets
Square toe shoes
Hourglass
If you have a defined waist and
bust, with wider hips, you may be
an hourglass.
An hourglass shape is both a
blessing and a curse.
Like Megan Traynors song says,
Youve got all the right junk in
all the right places. However, you
have to accept that the baggy boho
look is just not doing anything for
your silhouette.
Do:
Accentuate the waist with belts,
pencil skirts, wrap dresses
Peplum is your friend
Choose boot cut trousers to create balance

Dont:
Shapeless garments they make
you look bigger
Skirts that end at the thickest part
of your leg
Diamond
If you have balanced hips and
shoulders, and a fuller tummy, you
might be a diamond.
Youve got a body that can rock
a 1950s pin up look, so head to
your nearest vintage shop and get
inspired.
Do:
Wear straight fit bottoms to create a slimming look
Wear belts to help create a waist
Look for tops with structured
shoulders and belted waists
Add volume to the top of your
body. Bright colours and soft materials or capped sleeves can help
you achieve this
Choose A-line skirts that skim
your body
Choose darker colours for bottoms
Show off your arms and calves
Round
Do you have a rounded shoulder line with a fuller tummy? You
might be a round body type.
Youve got a great pair of legs,
and you should show them off.
Dare to wear a short skirt, just avoid
high-waist skirts and belts around
your waist.
Do:
Choose A-line skirts and dresses to help minimize your waist
while creating curves
Choose straight cut trousers to
help elongate the body
Monochromatic colours also
elongate the body
Dark colours vs. light colours
(dark colours make you look
smaller)
Dont:
Details around bust, tummy and
hips
High-waist trousers or waistbands
With these style tips, youre
ready to dress that wonderful body
of yours. Go forth and be fabulous.

It seems every time we turn
around to buy our cup of coffee, the
price is going up. And even if we remember to bring our reusable mug,
our wallets still take a hit. What
you may not know is that you have
much more to do with the rising
price of coffee than you probably
realize.
While there has always been considerable debate on global warming, 97 per cent of climate scientists
agree that climate warming trends
over the past century are likely due
to human activities.
In the Fifth Assessment Report:
Climate Change 2013, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change states that warming of the
climate system is unequivocal, and
since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented
over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed,
the amounts of snow and ice have
diminished, sea level has risen, and
the concentrations of greenhouse
gases have increased.
The coffee plant is a regional
crop, requiring specific conditions
to grow and thrive, including temperature range, altitude, wind exposure and regular seasonal conditions, such as the amount and
frequency of rainfall. As the temperature increases and weather patterns shift and change, the number
of regions suitable for growing coffee is decreasing. Those regions left
that can produce coffee are producing less because higher temperatures affect the health and vitality
of those coffee plants.
Invasive species and pests that
were once held in check by consistent weather and temperatures
are now thriving and wreaking

havoc on coffee plantations. Global warming also causes severe

weather events, and Brazil, one of
the worlds top coffee producers,
is currently experiencing a severe
drought that has seriously hurt coffee plantations, which are sensitive
to rainfall levels.
Further compounding the issue,
deforestation of the Amazon rainforest has increased by 190 per cent
in August and September of 2014
as compared to 2013. As the trees
are burned, all the carbon they have
stored is released back into the environment, increasing greenhouse
gases and contributing to global
warming.
Additionally, trees and forests
play an important role in these
ecosystems by absorbing moisture trapped in the environment,
breathing it out as water vapor to
form clouds that produce rain. This
recycling of water evapotranspiration is an important function
of the rainforest and plays an important role in maintaining rainfall
and seasonal regularity in regions
surrounding the rainforest. As more
and more of the Amazonian Rainforest is burnt and slashed, more
carbon is being released and less
rain is fallinga deadly combination for coffee plantations in South
America.
All this has made it harder than
ever before to get the coffee from
the fields to your cup, and the price
of coffee is merely a reflection of
that. It is hard to imagine how you
could impact this global crisis, but
the little things you do all day add
up to a big impact.
Any time you use anything that
requires electricity, turn on a light,
drive your car or eat meat, you are
contributing to CO2 emissions that
cause global warming and ultimately, the increased cost of your daily
cup of coffee.

you can help mitigate global warming, please visit Green Tips at www.

Give us what we want a Pokmon review

JERROLD RUNDLE
INTERROBANG

Im a Pokfan, Ill admit it. When

Pokmon came to North America in
the 90s I was hooked the cards,
the video games, the show, the merchandise. I fell for Pikachu and the
gang of 149 friends 150 when
Mew was introduced.
I played almost every Pokmon
game released, though mainly focused on the RPGs, as catching and
training your own creatures was a
huge thing for me. I played Blue,
Yellow, Gold, FireRed, Platinum,
Diamond, SoulSilver, Black, White
2 and Y.
I played every generation, almost.
Timing, money, changing trends
generation three eluded me.
In 2014, Nintendo has seen
the rise, fall and rise again of the
Pokmon franchise. Last years introduction of X and Y for the 3DS
was mixed. A lot of fans loved the

graphics, but some werent thrilled

with the departure from original
two-dimension style. People loved
that X and Y were set in a pseudo France, following Black and
Whites departure from copying
Japanese geography. (Black and
White was a pseudo New York City,
with some arguing ruins in-game
lined up with the former Twin Towers location.) But what pretty much
everyone complained about was
the weak story, something that always plagued Pokmon games and
lacked in X and Y.
Then Nintendo announced another remake, Omega Ruby and Alpha
Sapphire. I was thrilled but also
worried X and Y was just an okay
game, while the remakes had previously been some of the best games
in the franchise.
Nintendo clearly wanted the release to be big, because the company did something completely new

it released a demo. One in which

you could later transfer earned
items and an exclusive mega evolution to the forthcoming game.
I played through, then did so 30
more times over a week, trying to
learn any new scrap of information, talking to every character for
a different line of text. I even found
the secret mission giving a nugget
one the creators said was extremely
rare to find. And while using the
starters over and over again, I was
hooked on the new story.
So I went on the release date and
picked up Omega Ruby, while also
getting Alpha Sapphire for my fiance. I played a few hours that weekend but presentations, essays, tests
and exams stood between me and
my Pokmon.
Despite this, I still found time to
rack up 40 hours even before beating the Elite Four, the group you
have to beat at the end of the game,

and before finishing the semester.

It was a great game, between the
DexNav feature that lets you chain
specific Pokmon encounters in
the wild; the updated secret bases
feature, which truly flourishes in a
wireless internet environment; and
the new fly HM mechanics, which
let you fly to specific routes. I
thought Nintendo succeeded much
more in this game than X and Y.
They even included the much beloved Pokmon Amie and Super
Training, X and Y mechanics that
let you interact with your Pokmon
even more. The story while initially weak as always got much better, as Nintendo gave a post game to
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire,
which starts with an asteroid on a
collision course with Earth.
But like most games, there were
still negatives.
The most glaring mistake was the
ability to customize your character

and clothing, a mechanic introduced in X and Y that fans were extremely vocal about losing. While
my rival in-game was friendly I
chose the male protagonist and my
fiance chose the female.
To be honest, I didnt think Nintendo would let through such casual
sexism. Your rival berates you simply for being a girl, only grudgingly
accepting your skill as a trainer after
beating him into submission three
separate times throughout the game.
There are smaller issues, but
nothing as glaring as these two. And
I feel bad, because Ill still buy the
next game, just like fans of other
game franchises. At the end of the
day, the cons werent enough of an
issue for me to justify not playing,
so I give Omega Ruby and Alpha
Sapphire a four out of five.
Maybe Nintendo will learn from
this game just give the fans what
they want.

Rare and unreleased: Gamings strangest consoles

GAMING THE SYSTEM
ESHAAN GUPTA

The world of video games is full

of oddities for not everything released fits the conventional bill of
insert game, hit play. Here are some
of the stranger gaming consoles
released by non-obscure outfits
gaming giants Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and Sega.
Family Computer Disk System
(Japan only)
This Japan-exclusive add-on for
the Famicom (Nintendo Entertainment System) allowed for the use
of games stored on a special custom
floppy disk rather than the costlier-to-manufacture cartridge medium. While this allowed for some
unique, exclusive features, such
as battery-less game saving for titles like The Legend of Zelda, the

faulty hardware and even less reliable floppies would prove to be the
systems undoing, at least for the
sake of its North American release.
Interestingly, the game Doki Doki
Panic, which served as the basis
for the North American version of
Super Mario Bros. 2, was initially
released as a FCDS exclusive.
Famicom Modem
(Japan only)
Yet another Japan-exclusive addon, players could actually connect
to a server with a bulletin board that
provided the latest in gaming news,
the weather and believe it or not
an extremely early prototype of
what we consider downloaded content today.
Dreamcast DVD Drive
(unreleased)
Dreamcast, oh Dreamcast. The
favorite story of woe told countless many times in gaming circles.
Hailed as one of the most undeservingly tragic consoles of the sixth
generation of gaming, despite the

strong start, crashed and burned

with the announcement and release
of the PlayStation 2. Arguably one
of the biggest strengths of the PS2
was its ability to function as a DVD
player, making for a lucrative purchase in a time where standalone
players could cost up to $600.
Sega, recognizing the importance
of the medium, proposed a secondary add-on for existing Dreamcast
consoles, with an updated future
Dreamcast model with the ability
to play DVDs already built in. It
was still too late, with nothing more
than an empty prototype shell being
the only existing proof of this life
support for a dying console.
Nintendo 64DD
(Japan only)
Probably one of the most unnecessary peripherals for the Nintendo
64, or any console really, the DD
was essentially an expansion port
that accepted custom-made magnetic disks. It was meant to assuage
the complaints from developers that

CREDIT: THE JEDI

Why bother; the 64DDs medium stored less than CDs and held less than
cartridges. Not a solution, but a problem of its own.
the N64s cartridge was simply too
low in capacity for more ambitious
games. However, the 64DDs magnetic disc space of 64 MB (compared to the maximum 16 MB of
the cartridge) was still short of the
650-700 MB offered by CD-ROMs

on rival Sony and Sega consoles.

The 64DD flopped with a small,
small library of titles that fell on the
wayside or were re-released on cartridges, and it never saw light outside of Japan.

Satire is the greatest enemy of tyrants

BRENT HOLMES
THE GAZETTE

LONDON If Dr. Stranglove,

Judd Apatow and North Korea had
a threesome, The Interview would
be the result. In one of the most
controversial films of the year, the
stoner comedy that popularized
Seth Rogen and James Franco in
Pineapple Express meets the kind
of too-soon political humour of a
game of Cards Against Humanity
for a combination that will offend
as much as it jokes.
Dave Skylark (James Franco)
and Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen)
are the creators of a tabloid talk
show with Skylark as an over-thetop frontman and Rapoport as his
producer. While Rapoport desires
to create a more credible form of
journalism, Skylark is content with
his shock-and-awe interviews an
interesting metaphor for the film
itself which bounces between highbrow political satire and Rogens
more familiar dick jokes. Here, Rogen is the straight man and Franco
plays the self-indulgent idiot.
When Rapoport manages to use
Skylarks popularity to land an interview with North Koreas eternal dictator Kim Jong-un (Randall
Park), the two are contacted by
CIA operative Agent Lacey (Lizzy
Caplan), who wants the blundering
duo to assassinate the mad tyrant.
However, the film itself takes shots
at a lot more than just Kim Jong-un.
The Interview is an absolutely
vicious satire mocking everything
from tabloid journalism and the
public that feeds off of it to American interventionist foreign policy
to the international political climate
surrounding nuclear weapons. Its
definitely a more intellectual direction for Rogen and his Point Grey
Pictures, who have been known
for their bro-comedy schtick, but it

CREDIT: COLUMBIA PICTURES

Wrought with controversy, The Interview was digitally released on

December 24 following the Sony hack and terrorist threats.
lacks the cynicism that made satires
like Dr. Strangelove so biting.
The comedy set pieces work better here than they did in Rogens previous film, Neighbors. Rapoports
confrontation with a tiger and an
air-dropped care package, Skylark
being sucked in by Kim Jong-uns
cult of personality and an awkward
no-handsies sex scene provide some
of the films funniest moments.
Filmgoers hungry for more of the
same dick joke, gross-out comedy
humour that Rogen does so well
will not be left starving here.
Sony pulled The Interviewwas
pulled from theatres after a North
Korean cyber-terrorist group threatened attacks on movie theatres. It
would be easy to say that the North
Koreans are being uptight assholes
about the film but as the film repeatedly points out, Kim Jong-un
actually tells his people that he does
not poo or pee and subsequently has
no butthole.Therefore, it would be
more accurate to say that North Koreatakes no shit if only Sony had
operated by the same modus operandi this film might have got the
wide release it deserves.
To be fair, its understandable
why North Korea is offended about
this film.The Interview will likely

leave many more offended once

more people are able to see it. Comedy uses characters who are moronic, stupid or unlikable to undermine
society when building a mythology around a heroic dictator, laughter is the greatest enemy.
As far back as Aristotle, comedy
worked by revealing the flaws of a
system but reconstituting the established order. Despite revealing the
illegitimate nature of the status quo,
it is maintained. The one flaw in
The Interviewis the bromance between Skylark and Rapoport is the
centrepiece.
What should be the focus is the
satire of political dictatorship and
continuing nuclear war paranoia,
the film would have benefited from
a more critically-thoughtful ending.
Katy Perry playing over a slow-motion helicopter vs. tank showdown
may be this generations version of
Vera Lynn playing over nuclear detonations, but it should have made a
better statement.
The satire doesnt go far enough
but The Interview is still one of the
strongest comedies of the year. Rogen and Franco show that they are
willing to reach in new directions
with their humour and their efforts
deserve praise.

Setting financial
goals for 2015
JESSICA KLAVER

Welcome back to your final term

of the school year. Make 2015 the
year that you set some financial
goals for yourself and for your future. To start, just take a couple
minutes to calculate your net worth.
You do this by listing all your assets in a chart and your debts in another. You then subtract your total
liabilities like debts from your
total assets. The difference is your
net worth. It is important to know
where you are before you can figure
out where you want to be. Listed
below are a few examples of financial goals that you can start saving
for and an easy calculation to help
you reach them.
The calculation
Determine the amount you are
trying to save and the timeframe
that you want to complete it in.
Take that amount and divide it by
the number of years, months, weeks
or days to determine how much
you need to save to keep yourself
on track. There are some examples
shown below although this calculation can be used for anything.
Buy a Michael Kors watch
Here is the calculation to purchase a $350 Michael Kors watch
in one year.
$350/12 = $29.17 per month
$350/52 = $6.73 per week

$350/365 = $0.96 per day

You would only need to save
$0.96 per day to buy a $350 Michael Kors watch in one year.
Go on an all-inclusive trip to
Cuba
A seven- to eight-day all-inclusive trip to Cuba costs approximately $2,500. Heres how much
you need to save in order to take
that trip on next years spring break.
$2,500/58 = $43.10 per week
$2,500/407 = $6.14 per day
If you bring your lunch to school
every day and set aside the money
that you save, you will be able to
take that awesome spring break trip
youve been dreaming of.
Buy a car
You could also save up to purchase a $10,000 car in five years
in cash.
$10,000/5 = $2,000 per year
$10,000/60 = $166.67 per month
$10,000/260 = $38.46 per week
$10,000/1,825 = $5.48 per day
For the same price as your daily Starbucks you could purchase a
$10,000 car in cash by re-allocating
that money to savings.
You can grow these savings even
faster if you place them into a high
interest savings account such as a
tax-free savings account (TFSA)
or invest them. Sometimes it may
feel like saving money is a futile attempt, but once you start to see that
balance grow, youll feel a great
sense of accomplishment and enjoy
the benefits. Happy New Year and
happy savings.

Starting well and getting

on the right track
KAREN NIXON-CARROLL
INTERROBANG

If youve recently made a commitment to improve your health in

some way, then step one is complete. Now you can move on to step
two: getting started. Choosing one
of the following tips is a great stepping stone to get you on the right
track even if you are not really
sure where it leads.
Get assessed
You can go to your doctor and
have a complete physical; go to a
fitness centre such as Fitness 101,
where you can have body composition, heart rate, blood pressure,
cardio testing and muscular fitness
testing as well as lifestyle coaching
to help determine where to start;
you can even use some online assessment tools such as the one at the
Norwegian University of Science
and Technology ntnu.edu/cerg/vo2max.
Track of your eating habits
You can keep a diary, but keep it
organized according to your goal.
If your goal is to eat more vegetables, then write out each of your
meals and snacks under the Canadas Food Guide food groups plus
a few extras: fruits and vegetables,
grains (whole and processed whole
grains), meat and alternatives, milk
and alternatives. Be sure to include
water, supplements, and other
goods and bads. You can also use
online sources such as eatracker.ca
from Dietitians of Canada or find a
suitable app for your smart phone
or tablet such as Fooducate.
Keep track of your fitness milestones

You can use the same basic methods as the tip above, like keeping
an organized journal. If you want
to be able to do more pushups then
track how many you do each workout along with other assisting upper
body exercises and core work. There
are great online sources and apps
available as well for your goals:
my personal favourites are Map
My Run, where you can create your
own routes in your neighbourhood
and save them, and My Fitness Pal,
which tracks fitness and nutrition.
Get educated the right way
Seek out resources that are not
trying to sell you something such as
the local health unit, organizations
such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation and information from educational sources like Harvard Medical
School (health.harvard.edu/).
Ask for help
If you belong to a fitness centre,
chances are there are some free services available to you to get started
with your routine and also narrow
down the right goal for you. You
can also ask your doctor or get a
referral. Free services are great, but
keep in mind that in the long run,
the small amount you may pay for
something toward your health now
is likely to lead to huge savings in
the future.

Chuck Palahniuks novel Fight Club got the Hollywood treatment and the adaptation ended differently for the
better. It got a nod from the author himself.

Adaptation deviation: When movies strayed

away and were better for it (Part II)
READING BETWEEN
THE LINES
ESHAAN GUPTA

Books always get the short end of

the stick for their big-screen blowups. The chief case of mistreating novels seems to be a complete
disrespect for the source material,
completely ignoring everything the
book stood for. However, it isnt always all bad. Heres a complete of
flicks that strayed away from their
source.
Die Hard Various books
Die Hard needs no introduction
as a franchise. Bringing down the
action hero from a bullet proof,
unstoppable rage machine to a saltof-the-earth, just-as-squishy-as-therest-of-us everyman was a unique
cinematic feat for the era of Rambo
and John Matrix.
Launching Bruce Willis into
stardom as a young, foul-mouthed,
self-doubting cop just trying to make
the best of a Christmas Eve gone
horribly wrong, Die Hards source
material is surprisingly pulpy.
Originally an adaptation of Nothing Lasts Forever, a sequel to Roderick Thorps novel The Detective,
which received a 1968 adaptation

starring Frank Sinatra, who lacked

the interest in reprising his role as
Joe Leland, resulted in the script
floating around in Hollywood purgatory. At one point even being attached to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Eventually, the script was reworked into being its own thing
rather than a sequel to a now somewhat-forgotten film. We can all
agree that the replacement of the
aging Sinatra with a young, hip
Bruce Willis, the compressing of
events from three days to just one
night among other changes, an action movie classic was born.
Oh, and if youre interested
in checking out Thorps novels,
theyve been brought back into print
for Die Hards 25th anniversary.
Die Hard 2: Die Harder isnt
quite the classic of its original counterpart, making John McClane one
of the most unfortunate characters
in the history of cinema by thrusting him yet into another terrorist
conspiracy, this time involving the
sabotage of air traffic controls. This
misfortune can be attributed to the
original source material being an
adaptation of the completely unrelated Walter Weger novel, 58 Minutes, being retooled as a Die Hard
sequel.
Fight Club
Beware spoilers, all ye who en-

ter here. But really, you only have

yourself to blame if you already havent either read the Chuck Palahniuk coming-of-age novel starring
35-year-olds or seen its superb
cinematic adaptation. In a move applauded by the author of the novel
himself, the original ending for the
novel Fight Club was completely
retooled from being vaguely sequel hook-like to a resolution much
more melancholy but emotionally
satisfying.
Hannibal
The follow-up to Silence of the
Lambs had a mixed reception to
say the least. Lacking Jodie Foster
and a lot of the artistic elements that
made its predecessor a strong cinematic piece, Hannibal still managed to stand on its own.
Probably the most controversial change to the movie from the
book was arguably for better or
for worse the ending. The novel
ended in Clarice Starling running
away with Hannibal Lecter, together as lovers, rather than the movies
sequel hook ending of Lecter being
on the run yet again. Some would
argue the novels ending as inferior, author-tract, some the movies
ending as nothing more than fuel
for another film. Whatever the truth
may be, its definitely an interesting
contrast between the two.

Everything is different in the Woods

PAM-MARIE GUZZO

What would you do if a witch

burst into your apartment and began singing of curses and beans and
a quest to be completed? Head Into
the Woods, of course, and assault
random fairy tale characters to accomplish the witchs tasks.
For those who can follow the
many interweaving threads, the
movie touches on multiple fairy
tales, including Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and
Little Red Riding Hood, slightly
morphing each tale as they fit into
the new design.
None remain as they were, and
each is given a new, darker perspective that makes one rethink the
original tales. The stories call back
to the original bloody tales from the
Grimm Brothers, far from the clean
and politically correct versions a
modern audience would be used to.
This newest Disney movie features an all-star cast, from old staples such as Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp to new favourites Chris
Pine and Anna Kendrick, as well
as several new faces who manage
to hold their own, but get a bit lost
among so many.
While all of the characters portrayed are familiar, each one manages to have enough of a twist to
maintain the audiences attention.
Into the Woods takes familiar stories
and turns them on their head, and
then occasionally appears to forget
that it was following that particular
character at all.

Belle en blanc
THE SHOPPING BAG

Belle en blanc translates to beautiful in white. White is the most

crisp and refreshing shade you can
wear at any time. It doesnt matter if
it is a dressy occasion or casual occasion, there is a way to easily dress
it up or dress it down.
You can do many things with
white and have a lot of fun with accessorizing and reinventing the way
an old garment can be worn.
Old Hollywood has always been
a huge influence on how to dress
chicly, because the style transcends
through time. It is an age of glamour that everyone can recognize
and somehow connect with it. Like
a white canvas, a white dress is the
perfect start to an outfit. Details,
texture and a hint of colour and a bit
of sparkle is all that is needed to relive the glamour of old Hollywood.
Glamour and femininity are the
main strong elements of old Hollywood of this outfit. All modern
elements mixed of this outfit are
mixed with pieces inspired by this
beautiful era.
A quarter length sleeve dress with
a wide scoop neck is styled with a
light brown faux fur collar clipped
diagonally instead of around the
neck as it is usually worn. It elegantly drapes off to the shoulder
delicately. Modernized with a light

curl, a favourite hairstyle season after season.

A bold red lip, light eye makeup
and a strong eyebrow help to bring
the entire beauty look together. To
modernize and add some sparkle
and glamour to this old Hollywood
look is to wear two hand chains and
a statement headpiece.
Both hand chains play up the
clean lines of modern design with
a glimpse of sparkle, while the
headpiece is a showstopper. A statement Swarovski jewel enhances the
makeup and beauty of the person
wearing it while the lines contour
the head and highlights the hair. Old
world meets modern world charm
collides in this outfit to create a
beautifully feminine look.
Faux fur collar
(Aldo, $30)
Ivana hand chain
(HAI-HA Jewelry, $25)
Melania hand chain
(HAI-HA Jewelry, $25)
Belle headpiece
(HAI-HA Jewelry, $55)
Feminine elements will never go
out of style; adding faux fur and
rhinestones instantly makes everything glamorous. This ensemble
fully embodies glamour and femininity in combination of the crispness of white. You can feel beautiful in anything if that is your mood
but a nice fitted white dress with accessories to make you the belle en
blanc will make you feel even more
special to whatever dressy occasion
you have in mind.

those classic soundtracks that every

Dangerous Minds: Originally
released in 1995, this film featured an incredibly poignant and
hard-hitting soundtrack that spoke
to the difficulties of growing up in
an urban ghetto. The movies standout track is Gangstas Paradise by
Coolio and L.V., and though rap is
not for everyone, this song spoke to
the anger and frustration everyone

Once: Released in 2006, I
wasnt a huge fan of this film, but
I did love the music. Much mellower than the tracks in Dangerous
Minds, this movies standout track
was Falling Slowly by the films
stars, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. This song has been covered
more times than I can count on reality singing shows like the X Factor
and American Idol, mostly because
of its instant emotional effect on an

The Fountain: Its hard to go

Joshua Radin acquired a following after actor Zach Braff introduced his
music on the hit show Scrubs.

Onward and
Sideways into love
BOBBYISMS
BOBBY FOLEY

I write about random things a lot.

I write a lot about random things.
There were two big factors that
led to the indie invasion boiling
over in the 2000s, the nouveau-folk
tide that would gradually evolve
into the indie scene we know today.
The first was the Internet, and
specifically the birth of Web 2.0
blogging platforms and podcasts
offered the webs earliest tastemakers and savvier artists the means to
broadcast music in new ways.
The other was a shift in thinking on television licensing: A new
generation of music supervisors informed by more than the traditional mainstream means began to pair
popular programs with some of the
hottest unheard and indie acts. The
public response was voracious. So,
when actor Zach Braff introduced
Joshua Radins music to the creator
of Scrubs 10 years ago, the stage
was set, and soon, Radins music
was in millions of homes, with several of his earliest songs appearing
in the series over time.
Radin made his return to radio
with the release of on January 6,
capturing the soft-spoken troubadour at his most natural in years,
baring his heart to capture the affection of a woman with what he refers
to as an album of love letters.
The opening track, Well Keep
Running Forever, listens like a
sultry Sade single. Its silky guitar
tones and subtle groove complementing Radins soft vocal style.
I wait for you alone, writing
down the words Ill say so Ill be
brave when youre home, he sings,
setting the tone for the album by
revealing his hand. (Onward and
Sideways was born as Radin lay
horizontally on a hotel bed, whiling
away the daylight hours by writing
songs to present to his belle upon
her return from work during the
day.)
Every day shed go to work and
Id just be sitting there with my guitar, thinking well, I want to write
her [a song] for when she comes
home, so she has something to relax
to, he said. Ive never written a
record like this before.
The woman in question was an
acquaintance that he had known for

six years. She was in a relationship,

but there was something captivating
about her, and when the time came
that she was single again, Radin
didnt hesitate to make his feelings
known. Separated by a continent
and ocean, she was skeptical and
gently uninterested, but he was determined and traveled to be with her
once his prior tour finished.
Thats how it felt when I was
writing it I certainly didnt sit
down and say, Im going to write
an entire album about falling in love
with someone, but its what came
out, Radin said. I felt almost like
a news reporter, in a sense that it
was like an out-of-body experience,
like, whats going on with Joshua
Radin today?
Inspired by the whirlwind of new
feelings and the musical climate of
her native Sweden, Radin spent his
days on his hotel bed, exploring all
the beauty and ugliness of love, expertly capturing its dizzying highs
and terrifying lows within the songs
on Onward and Sideways.
In particular, Worlds Apart and
Old Friend stand out as jewels,
and Sheryl Crows contribution to
the new version of Beautiful Day
breathe new energy into a vibrant
song.
I spent a long time trying to
tell her things that I felt, but some
things need to be written out to
get across what you really mean
to say, Radin said. I guess I felt
that if I put it in a song, it must be
true, and I think she felt that way as
well. People say things all the time,
but if you put the time into writing
someone an album, it shows youve
really sacrificed your time ... and I
think thats when she finally started
taking me seriously.

There are definitely some gems in movie soundtracks.

ably going to be your perfect study
playlist. I cant pick one standout
track, because the entire soundtrack
flows together almost seamlessly
with its definitive use of piano and
orchestral arrangement.
Purple Rain: I cant pretend that
this movie was some great epiphany in film creation, but it was
certainly worth production if only
for the soundtrack. This film was
released in 1984, so probably well
before many of us were born. The
music was done by Prince, who also
starred in the movie. The soundtrack
is upbeat, and with a distinct sensuality unique to the 80s. Its perfect
for working out or playing during
late night drives to stay awake because the songs are so catchy that
its hard not to sing along. If you
want a sample before committing
to the whole album, just check out

When Doves Cry.

Pirate Radio: I loved this movie,
mostly because of its catchy, retro
tunes. The film came out in 2009,
but is set in the 1960s when rock
and roll in Britain was outlawed. A
super fun movie, the soundtrack reflects that and reminds me of beaches and summer. Its also something
Im completely comfortable putting

Guardians of the Galaxy: This
album was the inspiration for doing

I loved the unique soundtrack that

Also any soundtrack that includes
David Bowie is alright by me. This
film has a very similar effect as the
soundtrack to Pirate Radio. Its
catchy, fun and universal.

Inherent Vice inherently amazing

ERIK BAJZERT
THE GAZETTE

LONDON At its premiere at

the New York Film Festival in October critics and audiences bestowed
Inherent Vice with the oh-so-clever
title Incoherent Vice, content to
dismiss the nearly three-hour sunset noir as disappointing. These critiques do a disservice to a film that
has a lot of interesting elements. The
films plot is intentionally confusing
to reflect the mindset of its protagonist and itdoes make a decent
amount of sense by the end. Inherent Vice is worth it for the fantastic
journey the audience has taken with
an unforgettable cast of characters.
Inherent Vice plays like a combination of The Big Sleep and Cheech
and Chong. It stars Joaquin Phoenix as Doc Sportello, an L.A.-based
private investigator and bumbling
doper. He is visited late night by
his ex-girlfriend Shasta (Katherine
Waterson) who comes to him with a
kidnapping plot, which aims to lock
up her billionaire boyfriend Mickey
Wolfmann (Eric Roberts) in an insane asylum. In true film noir fashion, the simple premise becomes
more and more complex, until it
seems as if everyone in California
is involved. It seems as if Doc is the
only person with the ability to solve
the case if only he could remember the clues past the constant haze
within his head.
On the surface, Inherent Vice is
the most straightforward film Paul
Thomas Anderson has made since
Boogie Nights. Its a detective story
straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. However, anyone who
knows anything about Anderson or

CREDIT: WARNER BROS.

Its a combination of The Big Sleep and Cheech and Chong, and stars
heavyweights like Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon and Josh Brolin;
whats not to like?
Thomas Pynchon, who wrote the
source novel, could tell you that
theres always something more lying underneath the plot. Inherent
Vice is a film about longing, featuring a central character whose loneliness is ironically accented by the
barrage of colourful characters he
deals with on the daily.
It is abundantly clear that Doc
constantly longs for a life he could
never have, aspiring for both the
woman of his dreams and quietly
dreaming for the stability that is
apparent in the life of Docs LAPD
equal, Detective Bigfoot Bjornson
(Josh Brolin). The film is a goofy,
convoluted crime caper on the surface, but a beautifully subtle character piece underneath the standard
noir story.
As to be expected from an Anderson film, the direction is perfect.
Shot on a flat aspect ratio, which
compliments the films vintage

cinematography and colour palate,

each shot brims with absolute beauty. Those lucky enough to experience Inherent Vice in 70mm projection will be delighted by the gritty
texture of the film used, which creates nostalgia for a time before digital exhibition became the norm. In
terms of direction and performance,
Andersons penchant for long takes
and emotional rawness is fully present. The camera lingers and closes
in during the scenes where Doc
questions each suspect, and flies
about with him as we see the world
through his foggy eyes. One scene
in particular, which uses a Neil
Young song as background music,
absolutely stuns.
Inherent Vice is the kind of film
that can be talked about for hours.
This is a hilarious, loopy, yet emotionally resonant piece of work from
one of cinemas greatest working
filmmakers and well-worth seeing.

A battle too big for Bilbo?

ADAM TATELMAN
THE OTHER PRESS

NEW WESTMINSTER In
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five
Armies, Thorin Oakenshield has a
fever dream in which he drowns in
a river of the very gold he sought so
desperately. I can think of no visual
metaphor to better describe the current state of the Hobbit film franchise. With all the money he made
through the Lord of the Rings trilogy, director Peter Jacksons attempt
to make three more movies out of
a shorter, simpler novel results in
an amorphous, hog-wild mass with
more pacing problems than a sprinter with a heart condition.
If each Hobbit film roughly
corresponds to a first, second and
third act, then Battle is essentially
a three-hour climax. Unfortunately, this means the films dont stand
well on their own and, as such, the
trilogy as a whole shoots itself right
in the hairy foot.
Case in point: this movie kicks
off with a slam-bang fight against
Smaug the Dragon and then spends
an entire hour trying to continue
with progressively inflating CGI
action sequences whose context
only disintegrates over time. Once
the thousandth identical CGI orc
was slain and I heard Thorin speak

the lines, Goblin mercenaries. No

more than a hundred. Ill take care
of them, all dramatic tension had
evaporated and I was left praying
for an end. Its all visually impressive and well-choreographed, but
why focus on a battle which, in the
book, was only a few pages long?
Doesnt this fantasy warmongering
contradict Tolkiens anti-war philosophy?
This leads me to the second pedial bullet wound: the criminal
underutilization of Battles all-star
cast. So much of this film is focussed on scale that it forgets about
that little guy. For a movie called
The Hobbit, you wont see much of
that Bilbo Baggins dude it was supposed to be about. Where Return of
the King closed the LOTR trilogy
by giving each character a send-off,
Battle ends abruptly and unceremoniously, then asks us to be happy
with a cameo from Ian Holm and
a musical number by Billy Boyd.
When the credits rolled I was sad
and unfulfilled, and thats not how
Tolkien usually makes me feel.
Many of Jacksons earlier films
were campy, over-the-top cheesefests with a lot more heart than
brains. In that respect, LOTR was
easily his most focussed theatrical
vision. By comparison, Battle is

poorly structured; the plodding tale

unfolds at the speed of glaucoma,
denying closure to basically everyone who had a stake in the eponymous battle, in favour of closing off
a bunch of superfluous side-stories
nobody asked for and fewer people
liked (e.g. the Legolas/Tauriel/Kili
love triangle, the rescue of Gandalf
from Angmar).
I can already hear the shrieking
chorus of tremulous voices decrying
me as one of those basement-dwelling Tolkien purists who probably
speaks fluent Elvish and treats The
Silmarillion as gospel. While its
true I named my pet lizard Smaug,
my love of the lore isnt what kept
me from enjoying this film. If you
want to build on the source material, Im game. But when you do this
at the expense of story beats that
didnt need to be cut or changed,
you achieve nothing other than artificially fattening a narrative whose
very brilliance was in its brevity.
While Im sure many will enjoy
Battles art design and performances, I would have preferred the final
journey to Middle-Earth to be handled with a bit more gravitas. Given
Jacksons professed love of Tolkiens work, Im rather surprised he
didnt feel the same way.

Keeping London greener, forever

RANJINI CHAKRAVORTY

This fall, when for the first time

I drove into this city, my eyes were
soothed by the greenery around me.
I used to take long walks along the
riverbanks in the lap of these mystifying forests.
Eventually, I got in touch with
the Reforest London organization,
whose volunteers attempt to save,
protect and nurture the forests of
London. Active volunteers, especially the elderly Londoners, have
been disturbed by the fact that London is losing its status as the Forest
City.
Nature London and the London
Public Library organized the 10th
season of the Nature in the City
starting January 13. This six-part
lecture series sheds light on Londons natural habitat, its forests,

greenery and its indigenous species.

Nature and animal lovers will
also enjoy learning about the diverse lifestyles of the vulnerable
species and also the ones that are
nearing extinction. Perhaps its
your last chance to see them before
they make their way into the history
books.
Last fall, many environment lovers planted more than 350 native
trees at the White Oaks Optimist
Park, and the Interrobang got to talk
to a few of the volunteers.
I love the nature, the beauty of
the colours around me, said Mark
Coleman, who has been an active
volunteer at many such events.
I have been quite alarmed by the
global warming at a seminar in the
Western University half a decade
back, when I was a student.
Coleman has been associated

with the Reforest London for the

last four years. Each winter, informative events are arranged so that
in the warmer months volunteers
can help out in restoring greenery
in the city.
Several students from Fanshawe
College are also finding cause to
save nature.
I am an international student
here, and I want to know [about] the
nature and the environment out here

Its a British great thats slipped beyond the radar time to dig up Red

British invasion: Red Dwarf

REEL LIFE
ESHAAN GUPTA

British television has found explosive popularity in North AmericaDoctor Who is no longer relegated to PBS syndicated broadcasts.
We all know the greats: Doctor
Who, The IT Crowd and Sherlock.
But one particular cult favourite
thats slipped under the radar of
North American audiences is the
greatness of Red Dwarf.
The future isnt all its cracked up
to be for David Lister and Arnold
Rimmer, two lowly technicians
constantly at loggerheads with each
other, aboard the asteroid mining
ship Red Dwarf.
Already suffering from a complete lack of respect from fellow
crew members, things dont get any
better when a radiation leak aboard
the ship kills everyone. That is, except for the slovenly Lister, saved
by the stasis module he was frozen
in as punishment by the captain due
to insubordination.
Unfrozen three million years into
the future, Lister; the resurrected
hologram of his worst enemy, Arnold Rimmer; a humanoid creature
called Cat, which is a descendent of
Listers black tabby Frankenstein;
and the ships senile computer Hol-

ly, drift aimlessly in space, uncertain

if humanity even exists any longer.
Its a comedy, by the way.
Britcoms are famous for their
off-kilter sense of dark comedy, and
Red Dwarf delivers just that.
Even in the face of despair,
slob Lister and neat-freak Rimmer
manage to embody an Odd Couple-in-space feeling that gives the
show its charm in spite of its drab,
low-budget visual design. Plus, the
loose but definite sense of continuity gives the show something other
sitcoms sometimes lack: a sense of
meaningful character evolution.
Lister, a perpetual slob, matures
emotionally over time from the
man-child he once began as. Rimmer his hologram anyway goes
from being a spineless rule-fanatic to being relaxed, even open towards his shipmates. Cats cat-like
airheaded vanity occasionally takes
a backseat for some braveness or
sudden ingenuity.
Red Dwarf is cheesy science fiction at its best, and theres plenty of
it. Its nine seasons and has a miniseries special; a new series called
Red Dwarf X; along with novels
and merchandise. Its comic science fiction with a fully fleshed-out
word, with those seeking something
with enough backstory to warrant
hardcore fandom.
Red Dwarf is long-running but
always funny, introspective and just
plain entertaining sci-fi junk-food.

Lost heroes signal end of era

OPINION

JOEL LUXFORD

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

During final exams, there was a

great tragedy that hit the world of
hockey.
Like many of you, Im not sure if
it was my need to study or my desire to watch the Detroit Red Wings
face the Toronto Maple Leafs, but I
let that news pass through my conscious without a second glance.
However, once my last exam was
finished, I went back to read a bit
more on the passing and legend that
was Jean Bliveau.
The game of hockey today is
missing players like Mr. Bliveau,
the type of man who takes a young
rookie under his wing and shows
him everything there is to know
about being a professional. The
type of player who is compassionate, articulate and selfless.
Why are hockey players today so
vanilla? So robotic? Where are the
personalities and larger than life
icons? Sure, Sidney Crosby arguably fits the mold, but hockey fans
need more than one true icon.
Its disappointing that youth are
looking up to players like Evander
Kane flashing stacks of money or
Patrick Kane, who allegedly assaulted a taxi driver a few years ago
over some spare change.
Dont get me wrong, these guys
play hard night in and night out, but
they lack the strong character and
maturity level off the ice to truly be
considered heroes.
This is why the passing of
Bliveau is so relevant. It is the beginning of the end of an era. Players like Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr,
Maurice Richard and Bliveau are

Perhaps Sidney Crosby is the only

player in the league who fits the
hero bill, but why?

quickly becoming old stories our

parents will tell our future children
one day.
I can remember growing up
watching the Red Wings build a
dynasty around Steve Yzerman and
Nick Lidstrom. The Leafs had Mats
Sundin and Doug Gilmour. You just
dont see the same type of iconic
figures in the game today.
Perhaps parody in the NHL is to
blame. Since the institution of the
salary cap in 2005, we have seen a
sharp increase in talented players
league-wide, but its been offset by
the a lack of rivalry and personality
in the NHL.
In the words of sports journalist
Heywood Broun, Sports do not
build character, they reveal it.
Ultimately, the hockey world and
fans alike will miss players like the
great Bliveau most because there
may not be another one like him
again.

Falcons basketball mid-season review

MELANIE RINTJEMA
INTERROBANG

At the halfway point of the basketball season, both of Fanshawes

teams are doing excellently in the
Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) league.
The womens team is currently
ranked third in the OCAA west division with seven wins and two losses.
Having a large roster of 15 players, the team is looking to continue
its success in the second half. Defense has been impressive, holding
opponents to an average of 54.9
points per game, the fourth lowest
in the OCAA. Even more impressive is the teams ability to get in
the lane and push for baskets.
The team is leading the league
in free throws made and attempted. Stephanie Antwi is leading the
team, averaging 11.4 points per
game and 7.1 rebounds. Six of her

teammates are also averaging over

five points a game.
The team is also ranked second
in the league for steals, just half a
steal per game behind the Sheridan
Bruins in the top spot. The team is
ranked 15th in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic (CCAA) Association.
The team is hoping to continue their
success and push for the OCAA
championship in March.
The mens team is currently
in first place in the OCAA with
eight wins and one loss, putting it
in a great position looking to the
championships in March. The team
is also ranked third overall in the
CCAA National rankings, as of December 6.
The team is leading the league in
three-point percentage at an impressive 36.7 per cent. Its defense of the
line is also strong, holding opponents to just 24 per cent, the second

lowest in the league.

The dynamic trio Chris Stanhope, averaging 21.1 points per
game; Adam Jespersen, averaging
18 points per game; and Kyle McConnell, averaging 13.1 points per
game is together scoring over half
of the points for the team.
Jespersen is also leading in rebounds, averaging 8.7 per game.
The guards are also working hard,
running at every opportunity and
setting up their teammates for baskets.
The team is currently the top Ontario team in the CCAA, ranking
fourth. The Falcons are the only
team to beat the Humber Hawks
this season on November 28.
Both teams are excited about the
second half of the season and their
chances for the championships in
March.

BMWs xDrive35i is certainly a sight for sore eyes. This beauty might surprise you with its growl.

The 2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i

NAUMAN FAROOQ
INTERROBANG

It was early on a Sunday morning. The sun had just come up, and
what lay in front of me was a familiar two-lane black top, which
was smooth and had no interrupting
driveways.
This empty stretch presented me
the ideal opportunity to bury the
throttle in, if only for a few seconds.
What followed was eye-opening
acceleration and a wonderful growl
from the motor.
The vehicle I was in was not
some low-slung sports car; it was a
big and heavy SUV, which can pick
speed up well. The vehicle I was in
was the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i.
This model comes equipped with
a 4.4 litre, V8 engine that features
two twin-scroll turbo chargers. Net
result is 445 hp and 479 lb-ft of
torque. Power is fed to all-wheels
via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
According to BMW, the X5
xDrive50i model can accelerate
from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.3
seconds, and if you buy one with the
M sport package it has a top speed
electronically limited at 250 km/h.
I got no where close to that in my
run, nor was I planning to test that
claim on a public road, however,
I did experience some of the performance potential of this vehicle,
and trust me, this is one of the few
SUVs that anyone would love to
drive every day.
While it has the speed, its body
composure was not the greatest
when youre going for it. Nothing
to be alarmed about, at no point
did the vehicle felt unsafe - it just
reminded me that I was in a five
passenger SUV that has the kind of
cargo space to carry a months worth
of groceries. So while it can do silly
speeds, I say, just enjoy its luxuries
and practicality and use its power
for quick and safe overtaking maneuvers.
Similar to its straight-line performance, it is a familiar story when
it comes to its handling. While the
X5 handles well especially when
equipped with the M performance
package it will never encourage
you to take the twisty route home.

It has lots of grip, but the size and

weight of the vehicle (4,882 mm
long, curb weight is 2,336 kg) is far
from ideal for a back road carver.
The electronic power steering also
lacks feel, which makes it tricky to
place the vehicle on curvy roads,
but I will say the X5 is better at this
than just about any other SUV on
the market.
It is also better than its competition in terms of fit and finish and the
luxuries it presents. For instance,
BMW offers an optional panoramic
sunroof on the 2014 X5, and it is the
largest such unit I have ever come
across. Couple that with its latest
iDrive system and an infotainment
system that gives you live weather
updates based on your geographical
location on its dashboard-mounted
screen, and you cant help but feel
satisfied with the vehicle youre
driving.

Driving the 2014 X5 is not cheap.

The asking price is a bit steep - base
version of the xDrive50i model
starts at $76,590. Want the M Sport
package? That will add another
$4,000. My tester was so highly
equipped, its price tag was well
over $90,000. Filling one up is not
cheap either, since it only wants to
drink premium fuel, and even with
mostly careful driving, I averaged
just 13.0 litres/100km.
Those looking to save some money can opt for the xDrive35i and
xDrive35d models, which carry a
base price of $62,990 and $64,490
respectively.
I havent driven the diesel version
yet but have driven the xDrive35i
model, which I found to be just as
entertaining to drive (albeit with a
little less power), drank less fuel,
and had all the same luxuries. This
could be the SUV for me.
