TATA Motors Engineering Summer Internship 2013

Problem 1

Context
Considering narrow streets, crowded roads and limited parking space in different towns of our country, innovation is
required in reducing the vehicle turning circle diameter of the Nano, in order to achieve good maneuverability and a
good driving experience in vehicle turning and parking situations.
Problem Statement
An engineering solution to be provided with required modifications in vehicle aggregates to achieve vehicle turning
radius, equal to zero or close to it.
Solution Required
a) To achieve desired goal with least number of aggregates modification for the vehicle
b) The solution must be supported by model simulation and calculations back up
c) Modified part list as well as add-on part list at the vehicle level must be listed down
e.g. Modification: Steering, Suspension type, etc.
Deliverables
Presentation (pdf format) with
a) support of design calculation sheet
b) proven with simulation software

Note:
In case you are not able to achieve the end requirement, please submit details of your thinking process, solutions
explored etc.

Problem 2
Problem Statement
Short Circuit Protection for Emitter Follower Regulator

Figure:

The above figure shows the conventional short circuit protection scheme with current limiting circuit. This circuit is
mainly used to limit the current flowing through the series pass transistor Q1. The circuit has a current sense resistor R3
and current sense transistor Q2. By increasing the value of the sense resistor, we can limit the current to different
values. The short circuit current is limited to about 700/R3 mA.
This circuit suffers from two problems:
a. This circuit generally works fine for power-supplies rated for a few tens of mA of output currents.
However when the power-supply is rated for a few hundred mA (say 200mA) and Vin is around 12 to 16 Volt, Transistor
Q1 which is rated for a few hundred mW for regular linear operation, cannot sustain the power-dissipation of a few
watts, when the output is short circuited (16 Volt x 200mA = 3.2 Watts here). Over-sizing of the transistor proves to be
exorbitant as well as impractical from a space requirement point of view.
b. At currents near current limit value, the drop across R3 is a few hundreds of mV, which adversely affects the
regulation.
Solution Required
The problem is to design a simple short-circuit protection scheme for this circuit (and replace Q2, R3 circuit with this
new scheme) to overcome the above two problems. The solution needs to satisfy requirements as below:
a. The additional components should be restricted to one active component and two passive components. Avoid using
op-amps and comparators, since that makes the circuit costly.
b. The circuit should be self recoverable. It should not be latched off in response to an accidental short-circuit. It should
be recovered to its original output when short-circuit is removed.
c. It should not drop any parasitic voltage across it, affecting regulation as discussed above
