down on the ground.
Then he took the seven loaves
and the fish, gave thanks,
broke the loaves, and gave
them to the disciples, who in
turn gave them to the crowds.
They all ate and were satisfied.
They picked up the fragments
left overseven baskets full.

winnowing fan is in his hand. He

When John the Baptist heard

Christ, the son of David, the son of
Abraham. Abraham became the
father of Isaac, Isaac the father of
Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and
his brothers. Judah became the
father of Perez and Zerah, whose
mother was Tamar. Perez became
the father of Hezron, Hezron the
father of Ram, Ram the father of
Amminadab. Amminadab became
the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the
father of Salmon, Salmon the father
of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab.
Boaz became the father of Obed,

This is how the birth of Jesus

Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was
betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived
together, she was found with
child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he
was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to
shame, decided to divorce
her quietly. Such was his
intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream
and said, Joseph, son of
David, do not be afraid to
take Mary your wife into
your home. For it is through
the Holy Spirit that this child
has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you
are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his
people from their sins.
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said
through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall be
with child and bear a son,
and they shall name him
Emmanuel,
which means God is with
us.
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the
Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his
home. He had no relations
with her until she bore a son,
and he named him Jesus.

In the days of Herod, King of Judea,

there was a priest named Zechariah
of the priestly division of Abijah;
his wife was from the daughters of
Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Both were righteous in the eyes of God,
observing all the commandments and
ordinances of the Lord blamelessly. But
they had no child, because Elizabeth was
barren and both were advanced in
years.
Once when he was serving as priest
in his divisions turn before God,
according to the practice of the priestly
service, he was chosen by lot to enter
the sanctuary of the Lord to burn
incense. Then, when the whole
assembly of the people was praying
outside at the hour of the incense
offering, the angel of the Lord appeared
to him, standing at the right of the altar
of incense. Zechariah was troubled by
what he saw, and fear came upon him.
But the angel said to him, Do not be
afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer
has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will
bear you a son, and you shall name him
John. And you will have joy and
gladness, and many will rejoice at his
birth, for he will be great in the sight of
the Lord. He will drink neither wine nor
strong drink. He will be filled with the
Holy Spirit even from his mothers
womb, and he will turn many of the
children of Israel to the Lord their God.
He will go before him in the spirit and
power of Elijah to turn the hearts of
fathers toward children and the
disobedient to the understanding of the
righteous, to prepare a people fit for the
Lord. Then Zechariah said to the angel,
How shall I know this? For I am an old
man, and my wife is advanced in years.
And the angel said to him in reply, I am
Gabriel, who stand before God. I was
sent to speak to you and to announce to
you this good news. But now you will be
speechless and unable to talk until the
day these things take place, because you
did not believe my words, which will be
fulfilled at their proper time.
Meanwhile the people were waiting for
Zechariah and were amazed that he
stayed so long in the sanctuary. But
when he came out, he was unable to
speak to them, and they realized that he
had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He
was gesturing to them but remained
mute. Then, when his days of ministry
were completed, he went home. After
this time his wife Elizabeth conceived,
and she went into seclusion for five
months, saying, So has the Lord done
for me at a time when he has seen fit
to take away my disgrace before others.

Mary set out in those days

When the time arrived for

Elizabeth to have her child
she gave birth to a son.
Her neighbors and relatives
heard that the Lord had

toward her, and they rejoiced

eighth day to circumcise the
child, they were going to call
him Zechariah after his
father, but his mother said in
reply, No. He will be called
John.
But they answered her,
There is no one among your
relatives who has this name.
So they made signs, asking
his father what he wished
him to be called.
He asked for a tablet and
wrote, John is his name,
and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was
opened, his tongue freed,
and he spoke blessing God.
Then fear came upon all their
neighbors, and all these
matters were discussed
throughout the hill country
of Judea.
All who heard these things
took them to heart, saying,

be? For surely the hand of
the Lord was with him.

In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. He was in
the beginning with God. All
things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came
to be. What came to be through
him was life, and this life was
the light of the human race;
the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not
overcome it. A man named John
was sent from God. He came for
testimony, to testify to the light,
so that all might believe through
him. He was not the light,
but came to testify to the light.
The true light, which enlightens
everyone, was coming into the
world. He was in the world, and
the world came to be through
him, but the world did not know
him. He came to what was his
own, but his own people did not
accept him.
But to those who did accept him
he gave power to become
children of God, to those who
believe in his name, who were
born not by natural generation
nor by human choice nor by a
mans decision but of God.
And the Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among
us, and we saw his glory, the
glory as of the Fathers only Son,
full of grace and truth.
John testified to him and cried
out, saying, This was he of
whom I said, The one who is
coming after me ranks ahead of
me because he existed before
me. From his fullness we have
all received, grace in place of
grace, because while the law
was given through Moses, grace
and truth came through Jesus
Christ. No one has ever seen
God. The only Son, God, who is
at the Fathers side, has revealed
him.
