Londons Museums

The museums are very important in that world.A museum is an institution that cares
for a collection of artifacts and other objects of scientific, artistic, cultural, or
historical importance and makes them available for public viewing.
In London are over 240 museums, there are many type of museums: Historic house, Art, Medical,
Religious, Sports, Technology, Military and Multiple. London is home to many museums,
galleries, and other institutions, many of which are free of admission charges and are major
tourist attractions as well as playing a research role.
The first of these to be established was the British Museum in Bloomsbury, in
1753.The British Museum is widely considered to be one of the world's greatest museums of
human history and culture. Originally containing antiquities, natural history specimens and the
national library, the museum now has 7 million artefacts from around the globe.
At the same time the The National Gallery is an art museum . Founded in 1824, it
houses a collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900. The
gallery is an exempt charity, and a non-departmental public body of the Department for Culture,
Media and Sport. Its collection belongs to the public of the United Kingdom and entry to the
main collection (though not some special exhibitions) is free of charge.
Unlike comparable art museums in continental Europe, the National Gallery was not formed by
nationalising an existing royal or princely art collection. It came into being when the British
government bought 38 paintings from the heirs of John Julius Angerstein, an insurance broker
and patron of the arts, in 1824. After that initial purchase the Gallery was shaped mainly by its
early directors, notably Sir Charles Lock Eastlake, and by private donations, which comprise two
thirds of the collection. In that museum are many paintings which was painted by painters as:
Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Sandro Botticelli, Giovanni Bellini.
The Egyptian Galleries contain human and animal mummies. Some ,which enabled us to
decipher hieroglyphic texts, are in the Greek section. The Library has recently been moved to a
brand new, modern building in Euston Road near St Pancrs Station. Here you can see the original
documents of the Magna Carta ,many famous books and even the original manuscripts of some
of the Beatles songs.
Madame Tussauds is an exhibition of hundreds of life-size wax models of famous people of
yestarday and today. The collection was started by Madame Tussaud,a French modeller in wax,in
the 18 th century. Here you can meet all the stars, old and new ,singers, actors, politicians ,the
Royal Family, footballers and anyone who has been or is in the public eye.
In the latter half of the nineteenth century the locale of South Kensington was developed
as "Albertopolis", a cultural and scientific quarter. Three major national museums are located
there: the Victoria and Albert Museum (for the applied arts), the Natural History Museum and
the Science Museum. The national gallery of British art is at Tate Britain, originally established
as an annexe of the National Gallery in 1897. The Tate Gallery, as it was formerly known, also
became a major centre for modern art; in 2000 this collection moved to Tate Modern, a new
gallery housed in the former Bankside Power Station.
In London are also military museums Fierpower-The Royal Artillery Museum is a military
museum in Woolwich in south-east London, England, which tells the story of theRoyal
Regiment of Artillery and of the Royal Arsenal.

The National Army Museum is the British Army's central museum,it relates the overall history
of the British Army, British colonial, imperial and common wealth forces and theBritish Indian
Army as a whole from 1066 to the present and its effects on national and international history.
This is in contrast to other military museums in the United Kingdom such as Firepower The
Royal Artillery Museum, which relate the history of individual corpsand regiments of the British
Army.
If you want to go in London you can descover some musems which are impressive
and have an important role in our life, which make us understand many things about the British
history!Go for it!!!!
