Key terminology
The following are key terms used throughout this user guide:

media the materials that are applied to a page to create artwork. The media tools in the
application are based on traditional media. Examples of media include chalk, ink, watercolors,
oils, and acrylics.

page the area available for an individual drawing. Pages are stored within sketch pads. You can
export pages to the RIFF, PSD, JPEG, PNG, or TIFF file format. You can also import these file types
as pages.

temporal mode a palette mode that lets you use a keyboard shortcut to display a palette at the
current pointer position. The palette disappears automatically after you use it.

Palettes
Palettes are collections of tools, commands, or settings. The palettes in Corel Painter Sketch Pad are
designed to adapt to your workflow needs. All palettes are scalable, become semitransparent when
not in use, and disappear temporarily when in the path of your stroke. The Standard palette, Layers
palette, and Sketch Pad palette remain stationary, but the round palettes can be moved anywhere in
the workspace. You can view the round palettes whenever and wherever you want by using the
temporal mode a special mode that lets you display a palette at the current pointer position by
using a keyboard shortcut. All palettes can be hidden.

Hiding and showing palettes

You can hide or show palettes at any time. You can hide palettes to maximize your workspace, or
show them to gain quick access to tools and settings. You can hide individual palettes, or hide all
palettes simultaneously.

To hide or show a palette

Choose Window menu, and choose either Show [palette name] or Hide [palette name].
You can also close the round palettes by clicking the Close button

that appears in the

upper-left area outside the palette.

You can use keyboard shortcuts to hide or show palettes. The default keyboard shortcut for
each palette is listed next to the palette name in the Window menu. For example, the
keyboard shortcut for the Layers palette is Command + 6 (Mac OS) or Ctrl + 6
(Windows).

To hide or show all palettes

Choose Window menu > Hide Palettes or Show Palettes.

Using palettes in temporal mode

The round palettes (Colors, Media, Media Settings, and Tools) let you work in temporal mode a
special mode that lets you display a palette at the current pointer position.
You can activate temporal mode by unpinning a palette. When a palette is unpinned, it hides until
you recall it by using a keyboard shortcut. When you recall the palette, it appears where you need it
under your pointer which lets you change the colors, tools, or settings quickly. The palette
disappears automatically after you use it, so you can return to your work.

Basics
Corel Painter Sketch Pad lets you create and collect sketches in sketch pads books that let you
organize your work according to date, subject, project, or any theme you choose.
Sketch pads are multipage files that are saved in a default file format (SKETCHPAD), but individual
pages can be imported from and exported to other file formats, such as Corel Painter (RIFF),
Adobe Photoshop (PSD), JPEG, PNG, and TIFF. You can import and export pages when you want to
move pages between different sketch pads or use content in other applications.
In this chapter, youll find basic information about creating and using sketch pads. Youll also learn
some key tasks that will help you edit and share your work.

Sketch pads let you organize your sketches.

Creating sketch pads

When you create a sketch pad, you choose a name and location for the file, as well as the default
page size, resolution, and paper texture.
You can work with only one sketch pad at a time. When you create a new sketch pad, the current
sketch pad is automatically saved and closed.

Saving sketch pads

Sketch pads are saved to the default file format (SKETCHPAD). All pages are saved in a single
SKETCHPAD file. You can save individual pages by exporting them. For more information, see
Exporting pages on page 15.
Only one sketch pad can be open at a time, so sketch pads are automatically saved and closed when
you create or open another sketch pad.
You can save regularly to protect your work. If you dont want to overwrite a saved sketch pad with
the latest changes, you can use the Save Sketch Pad As command, which lets you save your work to a
new file.

To save a sketch pad

Choose File menu > Save.

The file is saved to the name and location you specified when you created the sketch pad.
To save your sketch pad to a new name or location, choose File menu > Save Sketch Pad As,
and in the Save dialog box (Mac OS) or Save Sketch Pad As dialog box (Windows), specify a
location, and a file name.

Adding pages
You can add pages to a sketch pad at any time. When you add a page, you can accept the default
page settings for the sketch pad, or you can set the size, resolution, and paper texture for the
individual page. For example, your digital sketch pad can have a combination of large canvas-textured
pages, small watercolor pages, and thumbnail-sized, fine-grain sketching pages. You can also add
pages by importing images. For more information, see Importing pages on page 14.

Eraser, Inking Pen, and Pen do not interact with paper grain.

To adjust the paper grain

On the Media Settings palette, drag the Grain slider

Media tools react differently to grain, so its best to experiment with this setting.

22

Changing the pointer for media tools

You can change the pointer that appears with media tools. For example, when you want to make
small, precise strokes, you can replace a pointer that marks the diameter of the tool with a pointer
that marks the center of the tool. You can choose from the following pointers:

Brush Ghost gives you visual feedback about the brush size and indicates the tilt, bearing, and
rotation of the pen. The outer ring indicates the brush size, and the line indicates the tilt and
bearing of the pen. If you have a flat-tip pen that supports 360-degree rotation, a dot appears
along the outer ring to indicate the pen rotation. This pointer is the default.

Cross Hair can be used for precision work. The point at which the lines intersect is the center
position of the media tool.

Single Pixel marks the center position of the media tool with a single pixel, which lets you
minimize the pointer.

The Brush Ghost gives you visual feedback about the brush
size and indicates the tilt, bearing, and rotation of the pen.

To change the pointer for media tools

Do one of the following:

(Mac OS) Choose Sketch Pad menu > Preferences.

(Windows) Choose Edit menu > Preferences.

In the Preferences dialog box, choose a pointer type from the Display Brush Cursor pop-up
menu.

About media tools

The media tools are designed to give you the sensation of working with traditional media. Each one
reacts differently to the stylus and paper texture as it applies, removes, or blends color. The
alphabetical list below describes the media tools available in Corel Painter Sketch Pad.

Acrylic Brush
The Acrylic Brush produces the sensation of working with thick, opaque, sticky paint. The brush can
pick up and apply multiple colors that you can blend with underlying colors to create realistic painting
effects.

Airbrush
The Airbrush applies fine sprays of transparent color that interact with the paper grain. The Airbrush is
an excellent tool for blending and softening lines. The size and opacity of strokes are affected by the
pressure you apply to the stylus.

Blender
The Blender tool affects underlying strokes by moving and mixing colors. You can use the Blender to
smooth lines and create shading, as you would on a pencil sketch or charcoal drawing. The Blender
interacts with the paper texture. To blend watercolor strokes, use the Dry Watercolor command before
you begin to blend.

Chalk
The Chalk tool produces the thick, rich texture of natural chalk sticks. Chalk strokes interact with the
paper grain, and their opacity is linked to the stylus pressure. The angle of the stylus affects the stroke
width and amount of grain: perpendicular strokes are narrower and apply more of the medium (as
when you use the tip of a chalk stick); angled strokes are wider and show more paper grain (as when
you use the side of a chalk stick).

24

Eraser
The Eraser lets you erase media that youve applied to a page or layer. Eraser strokes remove the
underlying media according to how much pressure you apply. When you erase media from a page
(background), you reveal the paper color. For information about setting the paper color, see Setting
the paper color on page 28.

Inking Pen
The Inking Pen applies smooth, fluid strokes that vary in width according to the stylus pressure. This
pen is an excellent tool for drawing cartoons. The ink is absorbed by the paper, so there is no
interaction with the paper grain.

Marker
The Marker lets you apply semitransparent strokes that range from fine to blunt, like strokes created
with a chisel-point, rendering-style marker. The width of strokes is determined by the angle of the
stylus. You can layer strokes to build up color and shading.

Oil Brush
The Oil Brush lets you mix and blend paint as though you were working with traditional oil paints. You
can pick up and apply multiple colors at the same time and mix colors directly on the page. Each
stroke applies a finite amount of paint, so as you add a stroke to the page, the brush loses paint and
the stroke becomes fainter. After you complete a stroke, traces of paint remain on the brush and
interact with the paint that is loaded for the next stroke. When you choose a color from the Colors
palette, the brush is cleared of all other color. Strokes that are applied to layers dont fade as rapidly as
strokes applied to the page, because layers dont have the oily properties of the page.

Pen
The Pen is a round-tip tool that creates realistic, flowing pen strokes. The stroke width varies according
to the speed of the stroke. As with a fountain pen, ink accumulates slightly when you pause during a
stroke, and the ink does not interact with the paper grain.

25

Pencil
The Pencil lets you create various types of artwork from rough sketches to fine line drawings. Like
its traditional counterpart, the Pencil produces strokes that interact with the paper texture. The angle
(tilt) of the stylus affects the stroke width and paper grain: When the stylus is in an upright position,
strokes are narrower and apply more of the medium (as if you are using the tip of a pencil); when the
stylus is at an angle, strokes are wider and show more paper grain (as if you are shading with the side
of a pencil). As you increase stylus pressure, more of the medium is applied.

Watercolor Brush
The Watercolor Brush produces smooth, flowing watercolor strokes that react with the page texture.
Strokes affect each other as you apply one stroke on top of another and fill in more of the grain of the
paper. When you achieve the results you want, you can keep the strokes from changing by choosing
Page menu >Dry Watercolor. The width and opacity of strokes are affected by stylus pressure.

26

Color
You can choose colors by using the Colors palette or by sampling colors on a page. You can apply
color with a media tool or with the Paint Bucket tool.

Using the Colors palette

The Colors palette consists of two components that help you choose a color and its intensity: the Hue

Hue Ring

Ring and the Saturation/Value Triangle.

Hue Ring
The Hue Ring lets you choose a color.

Saturation/Value Triangle
The Saturation/Value Triangle lets you choose the intensity of the color as well as, black, white, or
shades of gray.

Current
Color

Saturation levels can be set from left to right. Dragging or clicking to the right increases the saturation
and produces purer colors within the predominant hue. Dragging or clicking to the left reduces the
level of color saturation, producing muddier or grayer colors.

Saturation/Value
Triangle
Colors palette

Values can be set from top to bottom. The top of the triangle is the highest value (white), and the
bottom is the lowest value (black).
The current color is displayed in a round swatch to the left of the Saturation/Value Triangle.

the selection, choose Edit menu > Deselect.

28

Filling areas with color

You can fill a page, a selection, or an enclosed area with color by using the Paint Bucket tool. For
example, you can fill areas with color in a cartoon drawing.
A default color tolerance setting determines how the fill detects the edges of the area that you want
to fill. If you want to control the edges of the fill, you can create a selection. For example, you can use
the Lasso tool to outline an irregularly shaped area. When you fill the area, the fill maintains a crisp
edge.

To fill an area with color

On the Colors palette, choose a color.

If you want to fill a selection, rather than an area enclosed by strokes, create a selection by
using one of the selection tools on the Tools palette.

of the figure. The fill was constrained by a selection that
was created around the head and eye.

On the Tools palette, click the Paint Bucket tool

On the page, click the area that you want to fill.

If an area is not completely enclosed (if the strokes do not meet), the color may leak into
other areas.
You can drag with the Paint Bucket tool to apply the fill only to the areas within a
rectangular fill marquee.

a page. For more information, see Sampling colors on a page on page 28.

Filling
You can fill a page, a selection, or an enclosed area with color by using the Paint Bucket tool. For more
information, see Filling areas with color on page 29.

Creating selections
A selection lets you isolate an area of the page, either to protect an area from change or to define an
area that you want to change.
You can use selections to do the following:

limit strokes and other actions to a selected area

define the area of the page that you want to cut or copy

define the area of the page that you want to move or copy to a new layer

33

For more information about these tasks, see Cutting, copying, and pasting on page 18 and
Creating layers on page 38.

Types of selections
You can create selections that are rectangular or oval, or you can create a freehand selection. Only one
selection can exist at a time, and you can remove a selection when you no longer need it.
In some cases, you may want to select all content on the page. For example, you may want to copy or
move all page content to a layer, or to clear all content from the page.

36

L ayers
Layers are like transparent sheets that you can stack to create a final composition. They provide one of
the great advantages of creating images in a digital workspace the freedom to experiment with
different compositions and media without risking an unwanted, permanent modification.
When you sketch on a page, your work appears on the background layer. As you add elements to a
sketch, you can continue working on the background layer, or you can create separate layers for new
elements or media. For example, you can create a pencil sketch on the background layer, add a layer
for color, and add a third layer for detailed work.

Using the L ayers palette

Layers are like transparent sheets that you can stack to
create a final composition.

The Layers palette lets you view and work with the layers on your page. You can view thumbnails of
each layer, add and delete layers, drop layers, and set the layer properties. The thumbnail for the active
layer is highlighted, so you can easily identify the layer that you are working on.
Corel Painter Sketch Pad preserves layers in the RIFF and PSD file formats, as well as in the default file
format (SKETCHPAD), so you can save the layers and make changes to them later. Then, instead of
having to re-create the entire composition, you can modify just one or more layers.
Note: When you import a RIFF or PSD file, a lock symbol appears on a layer thumbnail if the file
contains layers that cannot be edited in Corel Painter Sketch Pad. For example, vector-based layers,
such as text or shapes, are imported and preserved, but cannot be edited in the application. You can
choose to hide or show locked layers.

Selecting and navigating layers

When you work on multilayer documents, you need to be able to identify the active layer that is,
the layer that you are currently working on. The active layer is represented on the Layers palette by the
layer thumbnail surrounded by a blue highlight. You can change which layer is the active layer by
clicking a different layer thumbnail. You can work on only one layer at a time.
If you create multiple layers, you may need to scroll through the thumbnails on the Layers palette to
find the layer that you want to work on.

To select a layer

On the Layers palette, click a layer thumbnail.

A blue highlight appears around the active layer.
To scroll through layer thumbnails, click the arrow at the top

, the layer is hidden on the page. When the eye is open, the layer is

visible on the page.

Dropping layers
Dropping a layer merges its content with that of the background layer. After you drop a layer, you can
no longer access the content separately from the background content. Why drop layers? Layers
increase the file size, so when you no longer plan to edit a sketch, you can drop layers to minimize the
overall file size before saving or exporting.

40

To drop a layer

Choosing merge modes

You can specify how a layer blends with the underlying layer by choosing a merge mode. For example,
the default merge mode creates an opaque layer that completely covers the underlying layer, but
other merge modes blend the color or luminance of the layers to create a new effect.
The following table describes the merge modes that are available on the Layers palette.

Merge mode

Example

Default covers and hides the underlying image

These two layers were used to create the examples in

the merge mode table.

From the Merge Mode pop-up menu on the Layers palette, choose a merge mode.

44

Shortcuts
You can use keyboard and tablet shortcuts to work more quickly and to create a smoother workflow.

Keyboard shortcuts
Corel Painter Sketch Pad has keyboard shortcuts, which let you access a variety of tools and
commands quickly and easily by using the keyboard, rather than by selecting items from a menu or
palette.
The keyboard shortcuts rely on four modifier keys:

Modifier keys on a Mac or Mac OScompatible keyboard: Command, Option,

Shift, and the Spacebar.

On Mac OS keyboards: Command, Option, Shift, and the Spacebar

On Windows keyboards: Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and the Spacebar

To further minimize workflow disruptions, some keyboard shortcuts are interactive: You hold down a
key while you execute an action, and you release the key to return to the original tool. For example,
you can pan, zoom, rotate, and sample colors interactively.

To view a list of keyboard shortcuts

Choose Help menu > Keyboard Shortcuts.

You can print a copy of the keyboard shortcuts for reference by clicking the PDF Version link
at the upper-right corner of the Keyboard Shortcuts page.

Modifier keys on a Windows keyboard:

Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and the Spacebar.

Tablet shortcuts
Tablet shortcuts let you link the buttons and controls on your tablet to the tools and commands you
use most often in the application. For information about customizing tablet shortcuts, refer to the
manufacturers documentation for your tablet.
