Preface
Content

The Field Epidemiology Training Program in Gadjah Mada


University is a training program designed by Public Health
Department at F aculty of Medicine and Ministry of Health to
help develop Indonesias public health capabilities and
systems in dealing with the increasing public health
problems in Indonesia. This master program aim is to
foster the professional development of field-trained
epidemiologists who are competent in the practical
application of epidemiologic method s to solve public health
problems by providing information and recommendation
based on epidemiologic studies and theories to identify,
prioritize and plan the public health control measures and
also to evaluate the existing public health programs. The
master of epidemiology training program focused on the
field work and students epidemiologic skills are develop in
the field activities. During the field work students have to
conduct six field projects to achieve their minimum
competencies. These field projects are:

Vision

Objective

To become an international education and research


institution for academician, health professional and
researchers in public health by applying and disseminating
innovative epidemiological research, and application of
novel theories through effective health resources
management in order to prevent diseases and improve
community health level.

To educate graduate epidemiologists with wealthy field


experiences who are ready to work independently in
providing epidemiologic information and suggestion for
health decision maker at national and sub-national level
(provincial, district and city). The epidemiological evidence
can be used to identify, set priorities, plan health program
and intervention, and evaluate the effectiveness of public
health intervention

.
Mission

Learning Competencies

To produce master graduate with leadership and


competency in field epidemiology;
To develop theories through epidemiological research
in public health
To apply accurate epidemiological research results in
decision making and public health action

Design, use and evaluate the effectiveness of


epidemiologic surveillance systems and public health
screening programs;
recognize, investigate, and control unusual clusters of
epidemic outbreaks of disease, injuries, and deaths;
design, conduct, analyze, and interpret the results of
descriptive surveys and analytic studies in clinical and
community settings;
make effective written reports and oral presentations,
including the preparation of training and educational
programs, publications and consultations; and;
provide MOH program managers and policy makers
with epidemiologic management assistance for
establishing priorities, planning program strategies and
operations, monitoring program implementation, and
evaluating the health impact and cost effectiveness of
programs.

Learning Strategies

FETPs learning system use the semester credit system


which is determined by Indonesian High Education
System and admitted by ECTS (European Credit
Transfer and Accumulation System). During the course,
student needs to accomplish 48 credits.
Course work activitie s are focus to increase students
capability in theories, research, managerial and
practical skills.

Coursework
Field Epidemiology Training Program is a learning-bydoing program. Students must develop critical thinking and
professional epidemiologic skills relevant to the needs of
the public health system. These skills are achieved through
a combination of classroom work and supervised practical
field work over a 24 month period. Classroom work held for
2 months/semester and then continued by the field work.
