Please send along with this form copies of recommendations from churches which will encourage
other churches to support your missionary work. There are churches which will not allow a
visiting missionary to speak unless a church recommendation can be shown. Since it is impos
sible for any one person to know all Christians in the world, this recommendation by a respon
sible New Testament church is a vital help in persuading others of your worthiness and the value
of your mission. Mission Services stands ready to help you inform HORIZONS readers about
your church recommendations. Since the church is sending you to the mission field (Acts 13:1-3)
and will help provide the necessary needs on the field, naturally the church should share the

credit in your missionary ministry. One of the ways that the church can do this is to share their
conviction regarding your missionary ministry with others. Certainly, their words will help
convince others regarding the worthiness of your work. Please help MISSION SERVICES to
spread your news through HORIZONS, Packets and Slide library by sending your church recom
mendations as soon as possible. Thanks. Send what you have now, and the others later.

What things influenced you to become a missionary? What is your purpose? What do you hope
to accomplish on the mission field? Your own story in some detail might be influential in leading
others into fulltime service (Use an extra sheet if you need more space):'

When;I yyas. asked Have you thought about the possibl.li-ty that God might want you in His
service? I was made conscious for the first time of a personal involvement in the preaching
of the gospel . The appeal of the Christian wqy of life had been my reason for continuing

sometimes on my own, the "search for a church "home".

^hen I became aquainted with the

friendly young people cff the Polo Road church, I found aplace of some service not jnerely
attendance. The smaller size of the group plus their desire to work for Christ.made it
more probable that Each member would have G part. The activity in hte group made it
possible for me to become accustomed to working as an active member of the church.
Thus when I was asked to think about the possiblity of working for the Lord in a special

way 1 was surprised but ready to do so. In working the neighborhood of the church ofr
short time I learned to like the work and to desire to do more.... therefore I needed training.

Bro. Max Word Randall was ministering to the church in Cape Town at the time

that I made up my mind to seek training for the ministry.

Bro. Randall suggested

that the schooling I needed could be received in the United States, and it was

arranged for me to attend the Cincinnati Bible Seminary.

On looking back it seems that first I needed a church home where I would feel
"at home,"

second that I needed to be put to work,

and then to be approached

on the matter of the ministry.

Our purpose on mission field is first and foremost to bring Christ to the people.
This in itself will be a life's work, and we hope that the church will be enlarged
and activitated, enough to be self-supporting and self-propagating.

As a citizen I hope that we can have small part in the eventual:

appearance of such leaders and teachers.

The future happiness and work of the

chirch must of course depend upon the continued approval of the secular powers;
the future of the missions work depends upon this; and so does my own personal
happiness and security.

Well-being is not our goal, but the proper and democratic

state will produce these results, which are so highly prized even here in the United
States.

Our work will be with the schools and churches of the African brethren.

The schools will give us great opportunity to bring young people to Christ. We hope
also to encourage men to be trained for leadership as elders and evangelists.

Besides

teaching we will be doing evangelism also (maybe that should be stated the other way

around).

If there is any one particular thing I wish to accomplish it is to bring men

He is a

to Cope Town in South Africa. There he
was baptized into Christ in 1953, and was
a member of the Polo rood church of that

city.

His parents presently attend there,

He was graduated from

and is presently working toward the

Mary Frances was baptized at the Christian Church in Alfordsville.

After high

gree. Immediately there-after she began studies at the

University of Cincinnati, where she received the M.Ed.
degree in August of 1964.
Mary Frances has taught for

two years in the Cincinnati area schools.

Charles and Mary Frances were married in 1962 at the home

church of the Gabhart family. They have one child, a son
Todd Ashley.
Cincinnati has been their home since they
began their schooling, and until their departure they will
reside there.

THE

FIELD

Southern Rhodesia lies within the tropics in south central

Africa.

It has a population of over three million.

About

three hundred thousand are of European descent, and these

live mostly in the two larger cities, Salisbury and Bulawayo

Some are farmers in the high plateau areas.
In contrast
the African people are emerging into a new and modern
age, and are conscious of its advantages. The most im
portant thing in the mind of the African is Education.
But

they are still responsive to the gospel of Christ.

Thus we
shall combine education with evangelism.
In this age
of transition in Africa Christianity and the Christian must
play a major role to ensure the salvation of souls and the
development of a Christian nation.

a
OUR

PLANS

To bring the knowledge of Christ and salvation is our goal.

What better way to have a wide-spread and lasting effect
than to produce Christians converted and taught in Christian
schools?

This work will be done with the Mashoko AAissioh.

We shall be teaching both elementary and high schools levels

The surrounding area will be evangelized, and churches
established.

We desire that the results of the work will be

Christians well-versed in the Scriptures, and raising of a

native leadership. Mature and capable leaders from among
the African people are the only ones who can keep alive
the Church in Africa, missionaries can not.

So much of

the success of the future depends upon God granting us a

dedicated and trained evangelists, elders and ministers. All

the education alone can not save a man, but when used
by the Christian it will lead many to a firm faith.

OUR

NEEDS

God's blessing and guidance is our major need.

The faith

and prayer of our brethren must be listed. Financial sup

port. The work in Southern Rhodesia is carried on by in
dependent missionaries who hove commons goals and needs .
It has been agreed that all adults on the field should receive

$150 per month; children $50 per month This is our Living
Link support. The costs of the work itself are carried by
the Service Link. Travel Fund and Equipment needed make
up another of our present needs. We depend upon your in
terest to^ pursue these details further. As independent-mis
sionaries we are dependent upon the churches and individual
Christians to make these plans a working reality.

POPULATION

DISTRIBUTION

The missions work has been quite successful in the

reaching of a number of the African people. But the mere
increase in population poses a great problem... in 28
years the population will double its present total. At
the present rate of increase we will not be able to reach
the added individuals, unless we also maintain a high
rate of increase in workers and effort.

The world rate

of increase is 1 .75% per year; in Zambia it is 2.4%,

almost double that of most countries.

With modern med-

cine, such as that dispensed at the Mashoko Christian

Hospital the infant mortality rate is comparable to that

of the countries of Europe.

It is a known fact that the young people are more re

ceptive to the gospel than are their elders. In the table

below 19 years of age. This segment of the population

THE EUROPEAN POPULATION

The Europeans are an area of evangelism for the New Testament church. They are in a position
to act as leaders for the Church in Zambia as well as those Africans whose training has made

them qualified. But the appeal of the Restoration movement is virtually unknown among the
European people, while it is well known among the African people. Therefore to save souls and
gain more universal support for the Church in Zambia, we will have to launch a drive amongst
the Europeans also, as soon as possible.

Through the ages the Church has made a continuing contribution to the lives of its members.
That contribution has been, and still is. Learning.

From the basic A BC's to the formal dis

ciplines of theology, history and philosophy. The Scriptures tell us many times that "these things
are written for" our edification and warning, as well as to direct us in our daily living

But if these things are written, how will the uneducated ever know for themselves that these
things are so, as the Bereans were able to do?

Who can pick up and read the Scriptures, and

read to discover for themselves when they do not even know the alphabet?
educated African do this for himself?

How will the un

All these questions must be answered in the negative,

and when a man's soul, rnay be lost because he was unable to read God's Word for himself, we

who are in a position to help must feel the hopelessness of their condition and act to bring the
solution to the problem.

These ore questions which cause the Christian to answer "They must

be taught to study and know God's Word."

We all know that the plan of salvation is simple indeed to understand.

it today?

But how many practice

Why do so few practice it maybe a better question The answer is that the Scriptures

have not been consulted enough, if at all.

Many merely follow the leader.

Added to the

problem of illiteracy this failure to know and follow what God's Word teaches can amount to
the biggest problem for the work of the Church in Africa.

However, if we can teach and

train many African teachers and leaders we will have made a contribution to the security of the
Church there. Then, as Paul instructed, the same true doctrine will be committed to faithful

men who in turn will carry forward the work of Christ.

Without these men the Church may be

come so "indigenous" that it will no longer be Christian according to the New Testament.

Men full of the knowledge of the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit can lead future Christians to
