Mosttypicalionexchangeresinsarebasedoncrosslinkedpolystyrene.Theactualionexchangingsitesare

Besidesbeingmadeasbeadshapedmaterials,ionexchangeresinsareproducedasmembranes.The

Fourmaintypesofionexchangeresinsdifferintheirfunctionalgroups:
stronglyacidic,typicallyfeaturingsulfonicacidgroups,e.g.sodiumpolystyrenesulfonateor
polyAMPS.
stronglybasic,typicallyfeaturingquaternaryaminogroups,forexample,trimethylammonium
groups,e.g.polyAPTAC)
weaklyacidic,typicallyfeaturingcarboxylicacidgroups.
weaklybasic,typicallyfeaturingprimary,secondary,and/orternaryaminogroups,e.g.polyethylene
amine.
Specialisedionexchangeresinsarealsoknownsuchaschelatingresins(iminodiaceticacid,thioureabased
resins,andmanyothers.)
Anionresinsandcationresinsarethetwomostcommonresinsusedintheionexchangeprocess.While
