III.

Soil Erosion
1.Soil Erosion is the process of transporting weathered particles. The agents of
erosion include streams, groundwater, wind, tides and ocean currents, waves,
glaciers, man and animals.
2. Reduce the grazing pressure on the land, by increasing the supply of land
available for grazing, and reducing the demand for it. Erosion can be caused by
natural elements such as wind and glacial ice. Rocks are gradually broken down into
smaller pieces by the wind, rain, snow, and frost. The fragments of weathered rock
are then blown away by the wind or carried away by water in the form of streams
and rivers, ice in glaciers, or waves pounding coasts.
3.
Positive Effects of Erosion
--Fresh soil is scattered over dead areas
creating fertile lands.f

--Erosion can create some things such as

mountains, canyons, etc.

Negative Effects of Erosion

--Valuable fertile top soil is washed or
blown away leading to a situation where
earth is no longer held together and is
useless for growing plants or retaining
water in the ground.
--This eventually makes land useless for
farming and cattle and can even lead to
the formation of desert.

--Desertification can occur.

--Loss of habitat.
--Ecological disaster.

IV. Recognizing the role of Man in maintaining the capacity of the soil to
sustain life.
1. A. Soil Degradation
*Deforestation- Deforestation includes repeated lopping, felling, removal of forest
litter, browsing and trampling of livestock, fire, etc. that lead to soil degradation.
*Farming- The activity or business of growing crops and raising livestock.
*Economic Activities- Actions that involve the production, distribution and
consumption of goods and services at all levels within a society such as mining.
*Developmental Works- Such as settlements, transport and communication.
B. Weathering
*Humans cause increases in acid rain and pollution, which increase the amount of
weathering agents in the air and water, and then on land that also lead to soil
degradation.

*Humans also affect the rate of weathering/erosion by paving over large portions of
land, so that normal rain run-off is changed in direction and amount, to places
where it was previously not a problem.
*Other activities such as strip-mining and agriculture can affect the ability of the
land to absorb rain, increase erosion and run-off, and increase chemicals in the
groundwater.

Problem About Soil Degradation
--Deforestation
--Farming

Solution to Soil Degeradation

Problem
--Curb the felling of trees, by employing
a series of rules and laws to govern it.
--Reduce the grazing pressure on the
land, by increasing the supply of land
available for grazing, and reducing the
demand for it.

3. Good quality soil is essential to the successful allotment plot. First, buy fertilizer
for good soil, then do some careful efforts at sewing, weeding and tending your
garden. Soil provides the food, water and some air that your plants need for healthy
growth and development, so its worth spending time trying to improve its quality.
