Abstract
Visualization ability is very crucial in apparel designing especially in transferring a sketch to finished apparel. This
study aimsto identifythe spatial visualization ability among apparel design students by using specific spatial
visualizationtests.Previous studies showed that students who enrolled in apparel design course found it difficult to
transfer schematic two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional objects (3D), or vice-versa. Thetechniques of apparel
Spatial Visualization Ability Test (ASVT) and The Use of Strategy Questionnaire(USQ) were used to
determinestudents'performanceand strategiesin responding tospatial visualizationtests,A total of 99 students in
Apparel Design at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) were selectedas respondents. These respondents were found to
have moderate spatial visualization ability. This suggests that the curriculum of Apparel Design course at the
university level should take into account the aspect of spatial visualization ability in order to produce prolific
designers with higher level of creativity.

Introduction
Spatial visualization abilityis an important aspect inthe careers of apparel industry. The challenge for researchers
and educatorsin the field of fashion is to prepare students for a challenging world of apparel design in the near
future. Sutton and Williams (2007) defined spatial ability as the ability to convert objects mentally, ability to
understand how the shape of the object from a different perspectives/views, and the ability to relate objects in space.
Spatial ability is the ability to detect and describe forms, space, colourandline, including the ability to present idea
svisually and graphically(StrongandSmith,2002; Sutton andWilliams, 2007).Visualization is also the ability to
reflect the act or process of visual interpretation in the case or put into visual form and the formation of visual
images. Koch (2006) described visualization as the ability to manipulate, convert or rotate graphically the visual
stimuli provided/given. Spatial visualization ability is the mental ability to manipulate, describe, work, rotate,
multiply, revolve mentally or rearrange objects in pictorial of stimuli presented, and to reflect changes in the relative
position of objects in space (Strong & Smith, 2002; Alias, Black & Gray, 2002; Olkun, 2003).This study aims to
evaluate students' performance and strategies in response tospatial visualization tests in an apparel design and
product development course using the Apparel Spatial Visualization Ability Test (ASVT) and Use of Strategy
Questionnaire (USQ). ASVT measures the spatial visualization ability in particular that contributed to the design of
clothing and fashion product development itself (Workman, Caldwell, &Kallal, 1999).
The use of strategy is an important aspect in the process of designing clothes for developing spatial visualization
ability of an individual. Each individual uses different strategy in response to each item in ASVT (Gitimu, 2005).
Lemaire and Reder (1999) stressed the importance of multiple strategy use for the successful accomplishment of
cognitive tasks. Individuals with different spatial visualization abilities use different strategies to accomplish a
spatial task. Burin, Delgado and Prieto (2000) found that the choice of different strategies required interventions to
raise the performance of individuals in spatial tasks and to adjust to strategic preferences of individuals. *
