University Course Catalog Description

Semiconductor device physics, energy band diagrams, electronic devices including p-n junctions, bipolar
transistors, field effect transistors and device models.

II.

Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to introduce solid-state electronic devices. The course objectives are to
familiarize students with the energy band diagrams, device physics and models of pn junctions, bipolar
transistors, MOS structures, MOS field effect transistors and other devices.

Quiz: SIX in-class quizzes will be conducted. The FIVE highest scores will be counted towards the final
grade.
Tests: 2 tests worth 25% each will be conducted.
Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and weights 30%.

Course Policies
Quizzes, Tests and Exams:
1. During closed-book closed-notes quizzes, tests and exams, students will be allowed to use only
writing instruments and a calculator. All other instruments or devices are prohibited.
2. All numerical results must be given with units to receive full credit. Giving a numerical result without
showing supporting work may result in no credit being given.
3. Quizzes will be given either at the beginning or end of the class period. For quizzes given at the end
of the class period, no students will be allowed into the class room after a quiz is announced.
4. Make-ups for quizzes, tests and exams are only allowed for special circumstances. The instructor has
the final authority to decide whether a make-up is allowed.
5. All faculty members are required to document students' academic activity at the beginning of each
course. In order to document that you have started this course, you are required to take the first
quiz. Failure to do so will result in a delay in the disbursement of your financial aid.
Homework and Assignment
1. Homework and reading assignment will be given but not graded.
2. Note that you cannot expect to learn semiconductor devices and pass this course without working
and understanding the homework assignments.

Lectures:
1. All students are expected to attend all classes. Students are also expected to be on time and remain
until class is dismissed by the instructor. In the exceptional case that a student must arrive late or
depart early, students are expected to take every precaution to not disturb their classmates.
2. Per university policy and classroom etiquette, all mobile phones, iPods, etc. must be silenced during
all lectures. Students who do not abide by this rule will be asked to leave the classroom immediately
so as to not disrupt the learning environment.
