A. Present perfect simple
B. Present Perfect Continuous
Present perfect simple

Present perfect
continuous

Use
Both tenses are used to express that an action began in the past and is still going on or has just
finished. In many cases, both forms are correct, but there is often a difference in meaning: We use
the Present Perfect Simple mainly to express that an action is completed or to emphasize the
result. We use the Present Perfect Progressive to emphasize the duration or continuous course of
an action.

1. Description
Describe an action that began in the past and just ended. It
places emphasis on the outcome and not the action itself.
I have read a book (I note that I read a book, which I have
done, and not the fact that he spent time reading).
The perfect present is roughly equivalent to the Spanish
present perfect. We will see the differences in the section on
applications. Overall, it is a mixture between the present
and the past. We used it for past actions that are important
in the present.
Grammatical Rules
Form
To form the present perfect, the auxiliary verb "to have" in
the present and the past participle of the verb is used. For
regular verbs, the past participle is the simplest form of the
past. See the lesson on the simple past for more information
on how to form the past.

1. Description
This verb form is used when want to emphasize the
action itself rather than the result; not required if the
action is over or not (the action began in the past and
may eventually terminate or even continue).I have
been reading a book (shoulder what I've been doing,
did not indicate if I finished the book or not)
The present perfect continuous, often has the
equivalence of the translation "out + gerund " in
Spanish , but the use of this form is more common in
English. It is used to share you've started in the past
but continue into the present.
Grammatical Rules
Form
As in the present perfect, we use the auxiliary verb "to
have" plus "been (past participle of the verb "to be" )
and the present participle of the verb.

2. Function

Describe an action that began in the past and just ended.

Emphasizes the result and not the action itself.

We use that time when we would express the sense of

the continuity of an action that started in the past and
still lasts to this or that just ended.
We refer to something we've been doing over a period
of time; therefore, we use prepositions of time "for"
and "since".

This tense is used to talk about actions you did in the past
but which are connected with this. That is, we used to talk
about the experiences we've had in life, like trips we've
done, we've seen the movies and in general, anything we've
done at least once in life. If a task or issue you had slope've
done well you would use this tense. Grammatically, you
need the auxiliary verb have and main verb must be in past
participle or past participle. Learn how to use all tenses.

If we use the present perfect continuous without a

period of time, means "lately" or "Recently".

Block II
Used to / Didnt use to/ would
1. Description (Used to /didnt use to)

CECYT 2

Miguel

Bernard

Ingls V (Block 1-3) Oscar Antonio Sols Pea

The verb "use" means "use" or "using". However, when we use this verb in the simple past,
plus the preposition "to" as modal verb, the meaning changes. In addition, you can use "used
to" as an adjective. Below is an explanation of the different uses.
To use to (Soler)
The modal verb "used to" is used to indicate something that happened or happen in the past
as usual. Also, used to something that was true but what is not. As with the other modal
verbs, "used to" is followed by the base of the verb (the infinitive without "to") forms.
2.

Function

"Used to" is one of several ways that the English common actions mentioned in the past that
no longer performed or are not sparsely recounts today.
It is also used to refer to statements in the past that have now changed.
"Used to" It is always followed by an infinitive (ie. Be, walk, read, and go).
The phrase translates as "used" or "customary" (will vary completion of the verb in Spanish
by person, but in English the same way for all grammatical persons used).
The form "used to" be accompanied by an expression of time if you want to say when a state
or action were common.
3. Special features
a) Do not use "used to" for habitual actions in the present. Instead of this modal verb, an adverb
is used as "usually" or "normally"
b) You can also use the modal verb "would" event or repeated actions in the past. But note that
it can only be used with actions, not states or habits. Nor can use "would" in the negative. For
information on other uses of "would" see the lessons of conditional sentences and modal
verbs.
c) c) When "used to" is used as an adjective meaning "be accustomed to". It is used for things
that are familiar, normal or common and can be used in any tense. When "to be used to" is
followed by a verb, the verb must be in gerund ("-ing").

4. Examples
1. They used to pay us every month. Now they do it weekly. = Solan pagarnos todos los
meses. Ahora nos pagan por semana.
2. I used to go out a lot when I was a teenager. = Sola salir mucho cuando era
adolescente.

1. Description (would)
Would" is most commonly used to create conditional verb forms. It also serves as the past
form of the modal verb "will." Additionally, "would" can indicate repetition in the past.

CECYT 2

Miguel

Ingls V (Block 1-3) Oscar Antonio Sols Pea

Would es el pasado de will en algunos casos y verbo auxiliar en otros. Convierte en

potencial al verbo que le sigue y va seguido del verbo en forma base.
2. Function
Would: Talking about the past
We often use would as a kind of past tense of will or going to:
Even as a boy, he knew that he would succeed in life.
I thought it would rain so I brought my umbrella.
Using would as as a kind of past tense of will or going to is common in reported speech:
She said that she would buy some eggs. ("I will buy some eggs.")
The candidate said that he wouldn't increase taxes. ("I won't increase taxes.")
Why didn't you bring your umbrella? I told you it would rain! ("It's going to rain.")
We often use would not to talk about past refusals:
He wanted a divorce but his wife would not agree.
Yesterday morning, the car wouldn't start.
We sometimes use would (rather like used to) when talking about habitual past behaviour:
Every weekday my father would come home from work at 6pm and watch TV.
Every summer we'd go to the seaside.
Sometimes she'd phone me in the middle of the night.
We would always argue. We could never agree.
Special Features:
Structure of Would
subject + would + main verb
The main verb is always the bare infinitive (infinitive without "to").

*Past Perfect Simple
1. Description
The past perfect simple expresses an action taking place before a certain time in the past.
2. Function

CECYT 2

Miguel

Bernard

Ingls V (Block 1-3) Oscar Antonio Sols Pea

The past perfect simple is used to describe one action that happened before another action in the
past.
In many cases a complete sentence is written in two parts with two different tenses:
1.

The past perfect simple, to refer to the action that happened first or earlier

2.

The past simple to refer to the action that happened second or later

Sometimes the past perfect simple is used on its own and the action that took place afterwards is
understood.

3. Special Features

The time expressions already, for, since, and yet may be used in the past perfect simple, as they are
in the present perfect simple. Remember the following rules for using other time expressions:

Use after, as soon as, the moment that, until before using the past perfect simple.
Ex: After she had moved out, I found her notes./ I didnt say anything until shehad finished talking.

Book
The last book I read was different from others. Not a novel, a
story of horror or comedy; This book breaks all the paradigms
that holds society embraces love, relationships, thinking ... @ Is
Here. The book makes you think differently, makes you believe
that everything you heard or seen now makes sense, the
author anonim @ gets into your head, it looks like yourself are
in the situations described by the author.
Apart from the above, has a touch quite young and mysterious
as the author is anonymous.
Actually we highly recommend reading this book for people
who want to broaden their view, suitable for people with free
mind.

Movie

Have you ever met that person from the moment

you met was chemistry, there was that connection.
Swearing is a different than that imposed by
society partner. After five years of courtship,
everything starts to fall? At first make you think that
relationships can begin and end well, but
apparently not. This dramatic movie, makes you
think, takes you into the role of the protagonist and
the detective. His wife disappears initially make
you think it is murder; someone forcibly entered his
house ... After could it have been the husband?
You realize you can do many things out of spite,
love and revenge.
But more than a story of an alleged kidnapping
make you think twice before blaming someone...
