The House voted

Wednesday to block funding for
President Obamas executive order to protect about 4 million undocumented immigrants from
being deported and allow them to
work legally in the USA.
The action puts the House on a
collision course with Senate
Democrats and the White House
and could lead to a partial shutdown of the Department of
Homeland Security if a compromise cannot be reached by the
end of next month.
White House Domestic Policy
Director Cecilia Muoz said Obama will veto the bill if it passes
the Senate and reaches his desk.
Were condent were going to
be implementing these executive
orders, she said after the vote.
House members voted 236-191
to pass a $40 billion funding bill
for the Department of Homeland
Security after approving ve controversial immigration amendments. One would derail Obamas
latest immigration action; another would cut off funding for his
2012 program that gave protection from deportation and work
permits to immigrants brought to
the USA illegally as children.
About 600,000 young immigrants have been accepted into
the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, but their
applications for a two-year renewal would be in jeopardy under
the House-approved bill.
House members narrowly approved the amendment that
would end funding for the DACA
program by a vote of 218-209. It
was the closest vote on any of the
amendments and reects why it
may be especially difficult to get
the bill past Democrats and moderate Republicans in the Senate.
The House bill is unlikely to attract the 60 votes it needs in the
Senate to overcome a libuster.
Democrats, such as Rep. Steve
Israel, D-N.Y., criticized Republicans for putting DHS funding in
jeopardy in the wake of last
weeks terrorist attacks in Paris.
Republicans, such as Rep. Bob
Goodlatte, R-Va., said it was important to take a stand against
what they see as Obamas unconstitutional power grab.

Two climbers made it to the top

of El Capitan in Yosemite National
Park on Wednesday, the rst ever
to scale the 3,000-foot granite wall
using only their hands and feet and
safety rope.
For 19 days, Kevin Jorgeson, 30,
of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Tommy
Caldwell, 36, of Colorado, attempted what many considered impossible: Being the rst to free climb
the sheer face of El Capitans Dawn
Wall. The two reached the top
around 3:30 p.m. PT.
Each trained more than ve
years. Jorgeson fell 11 times over
seven days trying to get past one
tough section. It took everything
in my power to stay positive and
resolved that I would succeed, he
wrote on Facebook on Sunday.
Caldwell was the rst to nish;
Jorgeson caught up minutes later,
the Associated Press reported.
They changed clothes and hiked to
the summit where about 200 people were waiting.
President Obama sent his congratulations from the White House
Twitter account, saying the men
remind us that anything is
possible.

Kevin Jorgeson, 30, top, and Tommy Caldwell, 36, on Wednesday completed what has long been
considered the worlds most difficult rock climb: the 3,000-foot vertical wall on El Capitan.

be extended to 5 million, local
French media reported.
The publication came out as
al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula released a video claiming responsibility for the attack on

The video shows Nasr al-Ansi,
a top commander of the al-Qaeda
affiliate in Yemen, saying the attack was in retaliation for insult-

Al-Ansi said France is part of the

said his group chose the target,

In Washington, the office of the
Director of National Intelligence
conrmed the videos authenticity. But the intelligence community has not validated that the
group planned and organized the
Paris attack, said a government
official who asked not to be
named because he was not authorized to publicly discuss intelligence issues.
