IIM Raipur gets a reactor tender

Lucknow: Rolling up their sleeves, management students battled against
each other to come up with an idea to build an atomic reactor without
taking loans and generate quick profits from it. After much deliberation,
the government finally handed over the tender to a team from IIM Raipur.
This was, however, not a real tender process but one of the business
events titled L&T-Finesse at IIM-Lucknows annual business and
cultural fest Manfest-Varchasva. Giving it their best shot, B-schools
from across the country competed for the reactor tender.
Battling the brightest of the country, six teams presented their financial
and technical bid to put down their competitors. With less investment
and minimum hard work, the budding managers made use of the
latest technology that required minimum foreign intervention to
come up with the best idea. Lobbying their idea strongly, the teams
fought tooth and nail for the winner s slot. For managing its
f i na n cia l s we l l a n d wo rki n g i n ta n d em wit h th e ext e rn a l
environment, the team from IIM Raipur was adjudged the winner.
In the management event, The Next CEO, students were given a
task to get themselves appointed in a company. Already under
pressure, teams were asked to develop a strategy to work better.
While the employer wanted to appoint people on low salary
pa cka ge, t he j ob - see ke rs d id n o t a gre e to t he packa ges.
The event was endowed with foresight, functional expertise, confidence
and the rare ability to make decisions under severe pressure.

HINDUJA POWER PLANT LIKELY TO GO ON STREAM BY MARCH
It is the first Greenfield power plant to generate power post bifurcation
The damage caused by Cyclone Hudhud to some infrastructure
notwithstanding, the Hinduja National Power Corporation Limited is
expected to commission its coal fired power plant at Palavalasa, 50 km
from here by March. After steam blowing cleaning the pipelines from
the boiler to the turbine to allow transmission of steam at high pressure
and temperature, the company belonging to Hinduja group is now busy
with pre commissioning activity. HNPCL had originally planned to
commission the first 520 MW unit by the year end. It has two 520 MW
units. Due to Hudhud, the timeline for commissioning activity has been
extended by a few months, a source told The Hindu . After slowdown hit
the project, the power plant work was revived in 2009 10. Coal linkage
agreement has been signed with Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. It has
completed construction work with state-of-the-art technology. Boiler
and electrostatic precipitators have been provided by BHELs Trichy and

Ranipet units. It has a 275-metre chimney to control fly-ash. Postbifurcation, this will be the first Greenfield power plant to generate
power. The renewal of power purchase agreement was made on May
17, 2013 before division of the Andhra Pradesh. Now Telangana has
also staked its claim to have a share in power distribution.
Visakhapatnam district has another coal-fired Simhadri Super Thermal
Power Station of NTPC near Parawada. The unit built in two phases
generates 2,000 MW. From stage-I, it supplies entire power generated
to A.P.. Thirty three per cent from Stage-II is supplied to A.P. Telangana
government is also seeking its share from NTPC. The A.P. government
has already handed over 1200 acres to NTPC to set up 4,000 MW power
plant at Pudimadaka.
CITY CANCER HOSPITAL GETS NEW EQUIPMENT
A nuclear medicine technique that differentiates between metabolism

manufacture of a wide range of super alloys and special-purpose steel
for applications in defence and aerospace sectors. The consortium will
also provide the country with a credible domestic alternative for
manufacture of submarines. BHEL said it has emerged as a reliable
supplier of strategic equipment and services to Indian defence and
paramilitary forces for over two decades. It has large infrastructure
including dedicated engineering, R&D and manufacturing facilities at
several locations to manufacture various types of equipment and
provide complete services to meet the requirements of the Indian
defence sector.

money for an ambulance from his MPLAD fund. Dr. Srinivas was
informed that dearth of funds, to a tune of Rs. 4 crore was the reason
for the Rs. 11 crore super speciality block of KGH not getting
completed. Rs. 91 lakh were sanctioned to the Government Hospital
for Mental Care and Rs. 41 lakh to the Regional Eye Hospital, the
Minister said. A decision would be taken on constructing a Rs. 20 crore

CENTRAL LOCATION IS ITS ADVANTAGE
Dance rehearsals for the New Year bash are going on in full swing as
this time the residents of Venkojipalem plan to include fresh themes
such as dance, fancy dress, and elocution competitions involving
children. Residents say that its the way to celebrate special occasions
in their apartment blocks. Combined celebrations are organised with a
sense of belonging, and we share the responsibility, says N. Srinivas, a
Central Government employee residing in the colony. Apart from the

visible bonding over celebrations, what has drawn the residents closer
to the locality is the accessibility to the neighbouring areas. Be it
Seetammadhara, MVP Colony, Hanumanthawaka, or Madhurawada,
every place is close from this area. For children, commuting to schools
is made much easier as the bus stop is just a few blocks away, says V.
Padmavathi, a resident. From one of the citys oldest colonies with less
traffic movement to the busiest hub that houses scores of people who
have settled here, Venkojipalem has come a long way. Petty shops, a
temple with a huge Hanuman idol, a burial ground, kirana stores, and
Swami Gnanananda Ashram dot the colony. Some of the colony
residents allege that slum-dwellers staying in the area are causing
inconvenience in many ways. They dump garbage opposite our
apartment and refuse to put it in the dustbin. The overflowing garbage
bins, a gedda (rainwater drain) that passes through the burial ground,
and the open drainage system raise a stink in the colony, say the
residents. It is this aspect that has drawn many a resident to

NEW YEAR REVELLERS GAME FOR THE BIG PARTY
Overcast sky and forecast of rain have cast a shadow on New Years
eve revelry. But hoteliers are keeping their fingers crossed with plans
to shift events to indoor venues in case of rain. After a lull period post
Hudhud, which had an impact on the hospitality industry in the peak
tourist season, hotels and restaurants are gearing up to welcome the
New Year with full gusto by offering entertainment packages laced
with music, fashion shows, DJs, and a sumptuous array of food. Hotel
Novotel that is hosting three events one indoor and two outdoor
venues has a backup plan in place in view of the inclement weather.
For the rooftop and poolside parties, we have made alternative
arrangements to shift them indoors if it rains. The Casino Royale
event at V-Convention is being held in an indoor venue and the
response has been very encouraging so far, said Madhav
Bellamkonda, General Manager of Novotel Hotel. The hotel has lined
up events with Indian Idol finalist Ananya Mishra, Mexican vocalist

night. The New Years Eve party at Godavari Deck at The Gateway
Hotel promises to take the evening to a different level with pulsating
music, live entertainment, and an array of delectable snacks,
cocktails, and buffet spread at Godavari Hall. The programme is being
organised in coordination with Hampshire events. The Godavari
Deck, which is at an elevated level overlooking the sea, makes it an
ideal venue to host the most special event of the year. We are closely
monitoring the weather and in case it rains, we will shift the
programmes to Godavari Hall, said Souvik Bhattacharya, hotels
General Manager. The Park is hosting a seaside party with the theme
Hawaiian Night with South American and Columbian dancers, DJs, and
a delightful buffet spread. There will be Salsa and Latino dance
performances that will transform the beach into a dance floor. The
hotel has also planned for fireworks show at midnight to ring in the
New Year. High demand With all the four events at Hotel Four Points
being held at indoor venues, the demand for passes has been high,
according to hotels resident manager P.C. Rao. Passes for Banquets
event are sold out and we are optimistic of a good turnout at The
Eatery, Waves, and Panache, where we have a special line-up of
programmes, Mr. Rao added.
ADITYA STUDENTS GET PLACEMENT

implementation of labour laws and safety protocols in SEZs. In a

statement, he said in most of the units in SEZs including APSEZ and
Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City, Parawada, labour laws were not being
implemented. He said safety guidelines were also going for a toss
due to lack of supervision. Mr. Rao said the high power committee
comprising experts and representatives from various trade unions
should be asked to submit comprehensive recommendations on how
to improve the situation in SEZ units. He said the management of
Anjaneya Alloys Unit should give adequate compensation to the
family of a worker who died and to 10 others who were injured in
Sundays blast in one of the furnaces. According to him, two workers
had lost their vision due to severe burns.

Visakha Utsav venues at VUDA Park, Kailasagiri, and Gurajada
Kalakshetram, according to M.V. Seshagiri Babu, Vice Chairman of
VUDA and convener of Visakha Utsav. Schools and dance and music
institutions interested in taking part should first submit proposals.

ONLINE CLASSROOM LAUNCHED FOR VISUALLY CHALLENGED
Vision Aid Charitable Services Society has launched a virtual online
student stations for the visually challenged. The first two stations to
be connected online are Seva Bharati School for Visually Challenged
in Mangalore and Sushurta Eye Hospital in Kolkata. The online class
room that is equipped with a camera and computer was inaugurated
at Vision Aids centre at Ba Bapu Bhavan here on Monday by Director

of Centre for Policy Studies A. Prasanna Kumar. Lauding the work as

extraordinarily creative, and service of Vision Aid, he said 20 per cent
of the urban slum dwellers suffer from vision impairment and it
needed to be addressed. It extends the education via internet using
the services of Gyaanmantra, a Delhi based call centre, says M.S.
Raju, president of Vision Aid, an IITian from Kharagpur. Vision Aid runs
the facility in collaboration with VAInc of USA of which his son
Ramakrishna Raju is founder director. While the school is here, the
student station can be anywhere and requires a computer fitted with a
camera costing Rs.10,000. Of the amount Rs.5,000 is given as support
by Vision Aid and it installs the equipment also. It is extremely
difficult for the vision impaired to lead their life and carry out daily
routine. Hence, we have prepared orientation and mobility training
manual and handbook for them, elaborates Mr. Raju. Vision Aid also
offers Administrators of Application for Vision Impaired to train B.Ed.
and D.Ed. teachers. Mr. Raju says while the country turns out six lakh
teachers every year only 600 are trained in handling visually
challenged. If trained regular teachers can identify and help the
visually impaired. The online facility can help train two lakh teachers.
A 50-lesson certificate course will improve the employability of the
visually impaired, says Mr. Raju.

FOCUS ON SAFETY AUDIT AT INDUSTRIES

Though safety apparatus is being reviewed nothing is materialising
Frequent industrial accidents notwithstanding the talk of safety audit
have remained an empty rhetoric. It has become a normal practice to
review the safety apparatus vis vis the protocols being
implemented for occupational safety and health whenever a major
accident occurs but in practice nothing concrete is materialising, say
trade union leaders. Another point for deplorable track record, some
due to safety negligence and others due to pollution, is stated to be
lack of supervisory mechanism for want of manpower by the AP
Pollution Control Board, Factories, Fire and other concerned
departments. Though there was a proposal to locate the
headquarters of APPCB in the city due to location of several industrial
units, there appears to be no serious move in this regard as yet. The
death of one worker and injuries sustained by 10 others at Anjaneya
Alloys Limited in a furnace blast at AP Special Economic Zone on
Sunday is a case in point on the need for regulator safety audit. Some
of the workers injured in the accident told Ministers Ganta Srinivasa
Rao, Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu and CPI (M) team led by State Secretariat
member Ch. Narsinga Rao that despite warning on water leakage no
immediate action was taken to halt production. Its a matter of
serious concern that there is no let-up in industrial accidents. We
have to review the safety situation and conduct audit each industrywise, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said. Visakhapatnam has witnessed some of
the worst industrial accidents. Two engineers of a private firm died
following suspected gas leakage in June at Visakhapatnam Steel
Plant. Frequent gas leakages have been reported in some of the units
at Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City, Parawada. Three workers died in
fire at Hetero Drugs, Nakkapalli last year. While 19 died in an
explosion at oxygen pressure reduction station of VSP on June 13,
2012, cooling tower collapse at HPCL Visakh Refinery claimed 27
lives on August 23, 2013. All these accidents buttress our claim on
deteriorating safety status of our industrial establishments mainly

due to over-dependence on outsourcing and cost reduction, said

DONT CROSS YOUR LIMITS POLICE TO REVELLERS
The city police have drawn up an elaborate plan with a number of
restrictions to restrain the New Year revellers from going overboard
and to maintain law and order during the celebration time. The
Commissioner of Police incharge Atul Singh informed The Hindu that
the celebration time, be it at the hotels or at any public places and
clubs, will have to close by 1 a.m. Cautioning the tipsy drivers, he said
that special mobile squads will be on the move from 8 p.m. onwards
and drivers under the influence of alcohol will be taken to task. It is
estimated that about 50 squads will be on the move to check drunken
driving and about 1,300 police including a few armed squads will be on
duty to restrain the revellers. Mr. Atul Singh also pointed out that party
organisers should obtain prior permission from the police for hosting
programmes and all programmes should be restricted between 8 p.m.
and 1 a.m. The organisers should provide adequate security
arrangement and will have to take up the responsibility of installing CC
TV cameras at strategic points at the venue, he said. Mr. Singh also
pointed out that any kind of obscenity such as obscene dances and eve
teasing will be strictly condemned and people will be taken to task. He
cautioned that alcohol will not be served without obtaining special
permission from the Excise Department. Beach road to remain closed
The Beach Road will remain closed from Coastal Battery to VUDA Park
for traffic from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. the next day. We have seen a lot of
accidents taking place on the Beach Road in the past and moreover, a
large of number of people gather on the night. Closing the Beach Road
is a precautionary measure. Even the GVMC flyover at Asilmetta will
also remain closed during the same period, he said. 50 mobile squads

JICA TEAM VISITS NTPC SIMHADRI

A team deputed by Japan International Cooperation Agency JICA
visited NTPC Simhadri Super Thermal Power Station at Parawada on
Monday. JICA had funded StageI of Simhadri 2 x500 MW. The team
came for a periodical review of the project. The team consisting of
Takako Hirose, professor, Senshu University, Takahiro Sato, professor,
Kobe University, Masayuki Kitagawa, associate professor, Kobe
University, Kazitoshi Tamari, post doctoral fellow, JSPS, Atsushi
Fukumi, associate professor, University of Hyogo and Manabu Furita,
research student, Kyoto University were part of the team. They visited
plant, seawater pump house and planted saplings in the township at
Sanjeevani Ayurvedic Park. The team also interacted with the
stakeholders of neighbouring villages to find out activities taken up by
NTPC Simhadri under corporate social responsibility programme.
VEERAVARAM COMING BACK TO NORMAL: SP
Veeravaram, the native village of a spiritual leader Gemmela
Sanjeeva Rao who was killed by the Maoists near Korukonda shandy
in Visakha Agency on October 29 and his friends and relatives
clobbered to death two Maoists in retaliation, is returning to normal,
Superintendent of Police Koya Praveen said. The villagers vacated
Veeravaram after being threatened by the Maoists who also warned
them that they had identified 19 persons involved in the attack and
would try them in the Praja court. We are sending them
(villagers) back to Veeravaram in batches. presence of Maoists in
the Agency was not much. They were seen at some places during the
PLGA week (observed during early December), Dr. Praveen said
during the year-end press conference. He said that CPI (Maoist)
general secretary Ganapathi had not been present in the AndhraOdisha border area in recent past. SI surrendered On the surrender
to the department of the Sub-Inspector in the case involving
Payakaraopeta MLA V. Anitha, Dr. Praveen said the officer should have
informed higher officials after he had booked the case. It was

embarrassing for him and others when the office of AP Assembly had
sought details of the case booked against MLA, he said. A case was
filed against Ms. Anitha for allegedly beating up a person. Ganja
cases Huge quantity of ganja which was being cultivated in the
Agency and smuggled to different places in the country had been
seized during this year. But tracing the kingpins behind the illegal act
was proving to be difficult since their link with those smuggling ganja
could not be established. They were acting cleverly and persons
engaged to transport ganja would know to take it from one point to
another and they were not aware who was actually organising the
whole operation, Dr. Praveen said. During this year, the Maoists had
killed there persons and were involved in two cases of blasting and
resorted to violence during the elections. Nine persons, including a
professor of Andhra University, were arrested on the charge of having
explosives or weapons with them or transporting them. Nine important
underground Maoists were arrested and 19 others had surrendered.
They were among 83 arrested and 82 surrendered persons.
BEACH EROSION MAY BE SEVERE THIS YEAR
Scores of visitors to R. K. Beach were in for a shock on Monday as
they watched furious sea waves advancing towards the coast,
menacingly licking the walls of the footpath along the beach road
from Kursura Museum to R.K. Beach. This severely eroded beach
stretch had been a constant reminder to the gruesome impact of
cyclone Hudhud. The erosion activity, which normally occurs during
this time of the year, is, however pronounced, threatening to cause a
permanent damage to the beach. During the cyclone, vast quantities
of sand had been deposited on the land from the beach leading to a
severe loss of beach. But experts point out that seasonal erosion may
have dealt a double blow to the beach stretch. Scientist in charge of
the National Institute of Oceonography NIO V.S.N. Murty said coastal
erosion was a common phenomenon but this time the erosion may
have been more marked. During the northeast monsoon, sea erosion
occurs.
