SAYS BUILDING TRADES OF ALBERTA TO NEW

RESEARCH APPRENTICE
Promising Young Researcher will join U of A Prostate Cancer Research Team as part of an $80,000
commitment to prostate cancer research by Building Trades of Alberta
EDMONTON January 20th, 2015: Prostate Cancer Canada and the Building Trades of Alberta today
announced new funding that will support groundbreaking research into advanced stage prostate cancer. The
funding is described as an apprenticeship a unique opportunity for a talented young researcher to work on
leading-edge research with the best equipment and alongside the brightest minds.
Successful apprentice, Srijan Raha, will work with Dr. John Lewis prostate cancer research team at the
University of Alberta. Dr. Lewis and his team are developing a simple blood test that can predict the onset of
metastasis (spread of cancer) in those living with prostate cancer and better inform treatment decisions.
The BTA is proud to participate in the funding of these critical prostate cancer research positions that will
help to expand on the awareness, prevention and treatment of this menacing disease. says Warren
Fraleigh, President, Building Trades of Alberta Charitable Foundation and Executive Director, Building
Trades of Alberta.
We are on the brink of an exciting breakthrough - the research we are working on will play an important role
during the diagnosis and follow-up for prostate cancer, says Dr. Lewis. These tests could tell us if the
patient is at high risk for developing aggressive metastatic disease or if that patients disease is in a benign
state. Srijan will play an important role on our team.
This support from the Building Trades of Alberta is absolutely outstanding, says Rocco Rossi, President
and CEO, Prostate Cancer Canada. Their eighty thousand dollar commitment will further help us ensure that
men will have access to these tests and the knowledge they represent to make decisions that will maximize
quality of life. Were thrilled to be announcing another apprenticeship in Calgary soon thanks to the
generosity of the Building Trades of Alberta.
