HOMMA ET AL TRANSLATION FROM JAPANESE

Homma, Y, et al (1995) Effects of 8 week ingestion of mycoprotein on

plasma levels of lipids and apo (lipo) proteins. Prog Med 15: 183-195.
This study was an 8 week trial of subjects whose total cholesterol was
>220mg/dl. Mycoprotein was consumed at two levels of intake: 18g/day and
24g/day.
Cholesterol measurements taken over a two week period, identified subjects
whose TC>220mg/dl. Other subjects who did not meet the criteria were also
included in the trial for the purpose of collecting data.
2 weekly fasting blood tests [think this means a test every two weeks]
4 weeks treatment A
8 weeks washout
4 weeks treatment B
2 weekly rations of treatments, food diary 2-4 weekly download of info and
leftover samples etc.
Pulse, weight, BP also measured 2 weekly.
The table on page 64 gives the background details of the subjects. The first 2
lines give the numbers of males and females respectively. The next 7 lines
give the age distribution plus the average age (last line in this series). The
next 3 lines give the numbers with high and low cholesterol, followed by
those classified as obese. These are followed by numbers in the WHO
classification groups.
Results
Total cholesterol :
Total subjects

18g/day - 1.6% reduction

24g/day - 6.7% reduction (p<0.05)
Week 0 vs. week 8 paired t-test 18g/day
no significant reduction

>220mg/dl subjects 18g/day 0.7% reduction

24g/day 9.7% reduction (p<0.05)
Week 0 vs. week 8 paired t-test 18g/day
no significant reduction
Total subjects and >220mg/dl subjects. TC reduction evident at week 2 and 6,
but returned to higher at week 4 and 8.

In 24g/day treatment week0 vs. week 8 paired t-test TC significant reduction

p< 0.01. Reduction evident 2 weeks after end of trial.
Triglycerides :
:Total subjects

18g/day - no differences at week 8

24g/day - average10.0% reduction at week 8, this
reduction not statistically significant, but paired
t-test week 0 vs. week 8 significant (p<0.05).

: >220mg/dl subjects 18g/day 6.6% reduction ) no significant

24g/day 10.0% reduction ) reduction

HDL

Total subjects

>220mg/dl

>220mg/dl 18g/day no difference

24g/day 1.4% reduction significant at
p< 0.05
6.5% paired t-test significant
reduction.

LDL cant read due to missing end of page for 18g/day results.
For 24g/day at week 8 5.? % for total subjects >220mg/dl subjects reduced
by 8.7%.
For total subjects significant at p<0.05
Week 0 vs. week 8 paired t-test significant at p<0.05
For > 220mg/dl subjects significant at p< 0.05 reduction
Week 0 vs. week8 paired t-test significant at p<0.05 reduction
PL effect of mycoprotein similar to TC
FFA between week 0 and week 8 no difference.
Apo Proteins
For Al
18g/day total subjects and 220mg/dl subjects no visible difference.
24g/day

total subjects = no visible difference

>220mg/dl subjects = 3.7% reduction at week 8 significant at p<0.05

For B
18g/day at 8 weeks total subjects - 3.0% reduction

>220mg/dl subjects - 3.4% reduction not significant, either separately of as

paired t-test
24g/day at 8 weeks total subjects - 6.4% reduction for paired t-test p<0.05
>220mg/dl subjects 10.7% reduction for paired t-test p<0.01
Therefore total subjects reduction not significant but >220mg/dl subjects
significant at p<0.01

A-II,C-II, C-III AND E

18g/day no visible difference
24g/day C-II, E total subjects
) at week 8 small but significant
A-II, C-II and E > 220mg/dl ) reduction at p<0.05
Blood pressure
Few with high blood pressure. No visible difference in either group.

Summary
MCP resulted in decrease in TC for both 18g/day and 24g/day treatments.
However, 18g/day : at week 2 and 6 TC decreased
week 4 and 8 TC increased (recovered)
24g/day : no rebound evident
: effect of MCP stronger in reduction
: effect of reduction stronger in >220mg/dl subjects
therefore higher TC group showed greater reduction
LDL-C mirrors that of TC
Therefore LDL-C changes influencing overall TC observations (it is thought)
Apo B : only significant at 24g/day treatment
MCP more effective on cholesterol than Apo B
Triglycerides : averages too widespread to gauge stat significance
at either 18g or 24g per day
However paired t-test between week 0 and week 8 at 24g/day showed
significant reduction
VLDLs main Apo C-II and E reduced significantly
Therefore possible that MCP reduces VLDL

HDL-C : at 24g/day small but significant reduction

Apo AI : 24g/day only significant for >220mg/dl subjects as with
LDL, in HDL MCP had more influence on cholesterol than Apo.
24g/day more effective than 18g/day combinatory effect of fibre, protein and
linoleic acid?
24g/day subjects slight drop in Fe, need to be cautious.
