Lies have speed....

But truth has stamina.

t every point in life, it is very

important to know what you are
working for. It serves as a motivation.
In your case, Im sure quite a few of you
aspire to pursue engineering /medical
at one of the prestegeous colleges of the
country like the IITs or NITs or AIIMS .
But, with the increasing competition in
recent past, exams like the JEE and CET
have become tough nuts to crack.
So we are bringing to you this
magazine so that you get to know more
about the system, examinations like the

ero is a big contribution from India to the world of mathematics.

Its a symbol of beginning and value. Number system starts
with zero and if you add zeros to any number its value increases. In 2004,
MATRIX started with a great dream of promoting students to IITs and NITs
as well top institutes with conceptual teaching methods by keeping their
basic science fundamentals strong. From the state of zero today matrix has
reached the top by securing state 2nd topper in the Karnataka state board
exams. After ten year of continuous work to the society we are bringing out
a new idea of reaching students to inspire them to read more and achieve
different heights in education. The awarness with which the students in
the coastal region carry about the engineering and medical entrance exams
was seemingly poor. Motto of this bulletin to create an awareness among
students and parents about education in India and abroad. Focus is given to
over come the misconceptions of students in understanding few primal ideas
of various subjects. We keep on inspiring you for your education.

campus life, diverse curriculum and a plethora of

opportunities, the IITs are a dream destination for
students all across India.
What are NITs?
The National Institutes of Technology (NITs), earlier
known as the Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs),
were founded to include the aspect of regional diversity
and multi-cultural understanding in technical education
in the country. There are 30 NITs in India, one in each
state. Like the IITs, they are autonomous institutions
offering bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees in the
different branches of engineering. Degrees like MBA,
MCA, MSc, etc. in various subjects are also offered.
On the same lines as IITs, NITs have a vibrant
campus life with students, research scholars and faculty
residing inside the campus itself. There are a multitude
of clubs, societies, etc. run by students working towards
the betterment of quality of technical education at
IITs and NITs. The students have a lot of say in the
administration of these institutes.
The best of the NITs have often been ranked above
some of the IITs.
Mangalore is blessed to have an NIT of its own, the
National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal.
NITK is ranked among the top 10 engineering colleges
in the country.

What are IITs?

he Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
are the premier institutions for engineering
education in India. They are autonomous institutions,
i.e., they exercise independent control over their day to
day operations and curriculum. Apart from bachelors,
masters and doctorate degrees in engineering, IITs offer
programs for Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Agriculture,
Management, etc.
As of today, there are sixteen IITs all over the
country with five more new ones in the pipeline. Five
of the oldest and best IITs are located at Kharagpur,
Kanpur, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai with Kharagpur
being the oldest. Subsequently IITs were established at
Guwahati in 94, Roorkee in 01 and at Gandhinagar,
Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Bhubaneshwar, Mandi,
Patna, Ropar and Varanasi in the last six years.
The Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad is in the
process of being converted into an IIT. The Government
of India, in its budget of July 2014, announced setting
up of 5 new IITs in Jammu and Kashmir,Chhattisgarh,
Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The IIT that is closest
to Mangalore is IIT Madras.
Over the years, IITs have attracted the best minds
of the country. Students have access to world-class
facilities including expert talks and workshops visits
by industry/academia experts, artists, etc. A vibrant

generator gets rotated. The armature cuts the magnetic
flux produced by magnets inside, thus producing electricity.
The produced current, is being rectified, regulated and
stored in charger. When the switch is in ON mode, the light
gets illuminated from the current which is available in the
charger (battery).

What are Institutes of National Importance?

The status of Institution of National
Importance (INI) is bestowed by the
Govt. of India upon higher education
institutions which serve as pivotal
players in developing highly skilled
personnel within the specified region of
the country/state. INIs receive special
recognition and funding.
As on 7th October, 2014, there are 41
INIs all over the country including all
existing IITs and few NITs. NITK
Surathkal has been conferred the status
of an INI. Recently, National Institute of Design (NID),
Ahmedabad was awarded the status of INI.

How to get to IITs and NITs?

About SchoolEngg

IITs and NITs take admissions based on the performance

of a candidate in the Joint Entrance
Exam (JEE) conducted in April.
The exam is split into two parts.
The JEE Main is the first stage
conducted both online as well as
on paper. JEE Main Rank List is
prepared by giving 60% weightage
to JEE scores and 40% weightage
to Class 12 board marks. This score
is considered for admission to the
NITs and IIITs (Indian Institutes of
Information Technology).Separate

rank lists are drawn for various categories. Overall, the

top 1,50,000candidates in the JEE Main (from all merit
lists) will be eligible to sit for the JEE Advanced. IITs
take admissions based on a candidates performance
in the JEE Advanced. A new rule recommends that the
student should be in top 20 percentile or secure 75%
marks in the board examinations, whichever is lower,
for a seat in the IITs.
For JEE 2014, a total of 9,784 seats were made available
to students across all branches and across all IITs. Those
who do not make it through to IITs are nevertheless
considered for admission to the NITs and IIITs.
Those who make it to the list of Top 1,50,000 rank holders
in JEE Main 2014 merit list can sit for JEE Advanced
2014 and again in JEE Advanced 2015 to get a seat in
their coveted course or institute.
Certain other institutes which uses JEE advanced rank for
admission are IISc Bangalore, IIST Thiruvananthapuram,
RGPIT Rae Bareli and IISERs at Bhopal, Mohali,
Kolkata,Puneand Thiruvananthapuram.
A notable point here is that NITs reserve 50% of their seats
for students of the home state. This means that those who
give their board/PU exam from a school or PU college
in Karnataka are eligible for the 50% reserved seats at
NITK, Surathkal. This should be an added motivation for
students belonging to Karnataka as NITK is one of the
top engineering colleges of the country.

Preparation Desk
Is coaching necessary for JEE preparation?

he most important part of

preparation for any big
exam like your board exam or
CET or JEE is your hard work.
The amounts of sincerity with
which you do your homework,
your regularity to class, attention
that you pay in class are all
indicators of the amount of hard
work that you are putting in.
But with the cut-throat competition that is
prevalent in these exams nowadays, a little extra is
required from the student - the x-factor. A student
can go on adding hours and hours of study to his/her
daily routine without much benefit or he/she can plan
his/her study hours smartly and do more in lesser
time. This is the concept of smart work. To excel in
exams like the JEE, smart work is what is required.
What coaching institutes have done is that
they have reduced burden on students by doing
the planning part beforehand so that students can
concentrate on working hard during self-study.
These coaching institutes have a defined, planned
structure according to which they guide students.
Thus, the student is spared the time-consuming task
of allotting time slots to different topics.
Also, the faculty at coaching institutes is trained
to ensure that students find the path of competitive
exams easy. Nowadays, many of the teachers at

coaching institutes are young engineers themselves.

Having said all this, it is necessary to repeat that
devoted self-study is the most important aspect of
preparation for
any exam in the world. If a student lacks this
quality, coaching or no coaching, the result will be
the same.
What is CET? What are the kinds of colleges
that are available through CET?
The Common Entrance Test (CET) is a competitive
exam conducted for the purpose of admission of
students to the first year or first semester of full-time
courses in Medical, Dental and Engineering courses
in Government / University / Private Aided / Private
Un-Aided Professional Educational Institutions
in the State of Karnataka . Centrally governed
colleges like NITK dont take admission through
CET but some deemed colleges like MSRIT take
wards through it. There are around 200 engineering
colleges under it. They mainly offer Mechanical,
Electronic and Communication, CSE and followed
by IT. Now several colleges have started offering
branches like Polymer Engineering, Construction
Technology, Mechatronics, Ceramic, Environment,
Marine and Aerospace Engineering. Very recently,
institutes like Reva, MS Ramaiah, Alliance and PES
have extended their core competence in engineering
science and technology to emerge as new private
universities in the state.

Professor A. O. Surendranathan, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering,NITK

My son, Akhil.S has passed out on 2013 as civil engineer from NITK. He finished his scholing at NITK
campus. As a Professor in the department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, I wanted my son
to pursue his engineering at prestigious engineering institutions like IITs or NITs. Since I had known
that, MATRIX have a group of young motivated engineers to teach fundamentals of science, I put him
for the JEE coaching. It is a great opportunity for the students of coastal area of Dakshina Kannada to study under the
tutelage of reputed engineers. I am proud about MATRIX.

Doubt Desk
If I have taken up the science stream in
PU/Std. XI & XII, is engineering the only option for me?
Absolutely not. There is a
world of streams that is available
out there. We have limited
ourselves to a few because of the
culture of following the crowd.
A person can have a variety
of interests that are maybe
not entertained by our school
education system today.
For example, someone who
is good at the computer can
take up a Bachelor in Computer
Applications (BCA) instead
of taking up a more grilling
Computer Engineering. For those who see themselves
as future leaders, a degree called Bachelor in Business
Administration (BBA) is available at several colleges.
Similarly, there are a wide variety of career options that
havent been explored or encouraged by our current

school education system like sports, music, journalism,

mass-communication, arts, literature and many many
more.
It is here that the role of the internet comes into
play. I can go on and on and on telling you about the
plethora of career options available to you. But I think
that such things are best left to the students themselves.
So I encourage you to surf the internet and find out your
area of interest if you already havent done so. You can
also consult your teachers, parents and seniors regarding
this.
Something that has to be stated here is the difference
between interest and passion. For you to pursue one of
your
interests as a career today, it is very important that
it goes on to become your passiontomorrow. Because
you will be taking it up as a job later and you will be
living off it. So it is you who has to evaluate whether a
particular career choice suits you or not.

1. Should I give priority to board or IIT preparation? or both? - Anish, Govinda Dasa Surathkal

There is nothing like priority of preparation. Make your fundamentals strong by understanding the concepts of topics.
Reffer good books, especially competative exams books, not just board related books. If your concepts on any topic
clear, then any exams are going to be easy.

2. Day by day, Iam scaring about my JEE mains? Me studing in Second PUC science. What
should I do? I want to get in to NITK. - Prajna, St.Aloysious, Mangalore

No point in scaring about any exams. Belive yourself. Self motivation should be required at this movement. As per
indian techniques, do daily prayer two times, morning and evning aobut 20 min.Chant any sloka or mantra repeatedly
and heratly pray and wish god for your success. Mean while, be sytematic and focus on study. keep recal all formula
and definiton once before you goig to bed. success is yours.

3. Which branch of engineering can be called the branch of this era? -Apeksha, SDM PUC

We suggest you not to select your branch in this manner. You should first see which branch suits you the most. That
branch can even even be metallurgy, which is never given priority over circuit branches by a lot of people just because
they like to follow the crowd. But trust us,if it is the branch that makes you comfortable, you are definitely going to
make it the branch of this era.

We know what we are, but not what we may be.

Gyan Space
Anirudhha Mallya
Application Engineer at Oracle, USA

had a chance to be a doctor from the prestigious

university as I got 44th Rank in CET (Med) but
my passion pulled me to be a engineer from the best
university of Karnataka, NITK. In 2007, I was selected
in extended merit list in JEE but got a state rank of
185 in AIEEE and chose Electrical and Electronics
Engineering (EEE) in NITK although I performed
well with 18th Rank CET and 15th in COMED-K. I
got a chance to learn from top engineers under the roof
of MATRIX CLASSES. The approach of teachers
at MATRIX to solve physics and mathematics
problems ignited my spirit to work smartly. Joining
MATRIX became the turning point in my life, as
being from rural background where I did my PU
education at Pompei College, Kinnigoli which is
15km away from Surathkal city. When I was in first
year PUC, Gururaj sir visited and inspired us about
the various competitive exams like JEE and AIEEE.
It paved my way to get my Bachelors in EEE at NITK

Surathkal and got placed in HPCL

form there. Over time my dream
pulled me out and pushed me to
become Project Assistant at IISc,
Bangalore for a year (the dream
place to be a scientist). Finally,
I received my Masters degree in
Computer Engineering, majoring
in Computer Networks from
University of California Santa
Barbara (UCSB) in 2014. Currently I am working
at Oracle in Redwood Shores, California. My dad
(a professional cricket player) used to related words
like focus and manage your time from his cricket
experience to our life. This helped me with lot of
doldrums in my life. I am very happy that MATRIX is
coming up with this newsletter, so I could contribute
and inspire my juniors every time from USA.

Debarati Maiti

(CSE 2ndyear, NITK)

gave JEE Mains, WBJEE, JEE Advanced and

BITSAT. My rank in JEE Mains was 568,
WBJEE was 532, JEE advanced couldnt qualify
and BITSAT got a score of 268/360. I went for only
JEE Mains counseling, since my priority was IITs,
BITSPilani, NITK and then state government college
with computer science. I was quite rigid about my
branch. Hence I didnt go for BITS counseling since
I might have got B-Pharma there. I preferred NITK
than NITT (Trichy) because I knew; I would get a

more lenient environment in NITK. I would have

got in DTU also and actually it was a good option
as you get to stay in the national capital and get a
lot of exposure. I didnt take much pressure while
preparing for these exams and I mainly focused on
boards and that helped me a lot!! Be cool... Watch
some spiritual or comedy TV shows with your family
and try to learn something new every day... Make
learning your passion and then the success will be
just a by-product ;)
