Research interests
I am interested in the cognitive impairments that result from brain injury, with an emphasis on traumatic brain injury and disruption of attention and executive
processes. My research interests in this area range from basic cognitive mechanisms, to functional imaging, behavioral assessment, and treatment.
I am also involved in a program of research related to disorders of consciousness (coma, vegetative and minimally conscious states), including methods for
assessing the level of consciousness and treatments that can enhance consciousness
An overarching interest is the special methodologic challenges posed by rehabilitation research, which often involves interventions at cellular or process levels with
the goal of influencing complex real-world functioning.
I am also involved in research career development work on the local and national level, attempting to enhance academic development and career success among
rehabilitation researchers.

Restoration of consciousness with zolpidem, and exploration of the neural substrate of this response
Assessment and treatment of disorders of consciousness
fMRI correlates of attention and executive function and their response to psychoactive medications
Classification of Measurement of Medical Rehabilitation Interventions development of a taxonomy of rehabilitation treatments based on "active ingredients"
NIDRR-funded Traumatic Brain Injury Model System
The Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training Program a national research career development program for physiatrists
