AMERICAN ATHEISTS
is a non-profit, non-political, educational organization, dedicated to the complete and absolute separation of
state and church. We accept the explanation of Thomas Jefferson that the "First Amendment"
to the
Constitution of the United States was meant to create a "wall of separation" between state and church.
American Atheists are organized to stimulate and promote freedom of thought and inquiry concerning
religious beliefs, creeds, dogmas, tenets, rituals and practices;
to collect and disseminate information, data and literature on all religions and promote a more thorough
understanding of them, their origins and histories;
to encourage the development and public acceptance of a human ethical system, stressing the mutual
sympathy, understanding
and interdependence
of all people and the corresponding
responsibility of each
individual in relation to society;
to develop and propagate a culture in which man is the central figure who alone must be the source of
strength, progress and ideals for the well-being and happiness of humanity;
to promote the study of the arts and sciences and of all problems affecting the maintenance,
perpetuation and enrichment of human (and other) life;
to engage in such social, educational, legal and cultural activity as will be useful and beneficial to
members of American Atheists and to society as a whole.
Atheism may be defined as the mental attitude which unreservedly accepts the supremacy of reason and
aims at establishing a lifestyle and ethical outlook verifiable by experience
and the scientific method,
independent of all arbitrary assumptions of authority and creeds.
Materialism declares that the cosmos is devoid of immanent conscious purpose; that it is governed by its own
inherent, immutable and impersonal laws; that there is no supernatural interference in human life; that man finding his resources within himself - can and must create his own destiny. Materialism restores to man his.
dignity and his intellectual integrity. It teaches that we must prize our life on earth and strive always to improve
it. It holds that man is capable of creating
social system based on reason and justice. Materialism's "faith" is in
man and man's ability to transform the world culture by his own efforts. This is a commitment which is in very
essence life asserting. It considers the struggle for progress as a moral obligation and impossible without noble
ideas that inspire man to bold creative works. Materialism holds that humankind's potential for good and for an
outreach to more fulfilling cultural development is, for all practical purposes, unlimited.

Isn't love grand? Well, at any

rate, that's what the time honored
old saying would have us believe. r"I
And, in fact, love most likely is the
"grandest" emotion that any living
thing can experience. What more
perfect example of true concern
could one display? However,
"love" is quite often ill-defined.
. Some people use the word a bit too
freely. Love is not something to be
offered in trade. Nor is it something to be awarded in payment of
favors. Love's only value lies in the
fact that - in a true sense - it
must be unconditional. It must be
offered sincerely and without any
expectations of reward.
Such has never been the case
between religion and government.
The one has always used the other
to achieve position and influence.
The trouble with this type of relationship is that they are not "love"
at all but merely acts designed to
promote self-satisfaction. An exchange of "favors" is more accurately described as prostitution.
Certainly there is nothing wrong
with one's attemptto promote certain levels of self-satisfaction - so
long as we do not misunderstand
the underlying intention. And so it
has always been that the priests
soothe the politician so that the
politicians will soothe the priests.
How often has the citizen had to sit
idly by - unnoticed by either?
r-.
History will tell us that the
"masses" seldom gain from their
own labors. But, kings and clergy,
on the other hand, seem always
ready to share in a trade for power
and recognition that is funded by ~
the vassals of humankind.

THE MEDIA AND THE MESSAGE "\

The American Atheist organization was established as a
watchdog group to monitor the level of compliance with the
First Amendment of both religious and government institutions. That task has been a very difficult one to say the least.
It is ludicrous at best for a small, often struggling, underfinanced and socially outcast organization such as American Atheists to think that it can take the government of the
UnitedStates to task. When you have a governmental
system established upon certain principles in the early
stages and then have it stray from those principles itself as
time goes on, it is quite difficult to lead such a massive
bureaucracy back into a path of compliance with its own
rules. One is immediately confronted with an "Alice in
Wonderland" scenario where you playa game in which you
are stuck with a given set of rules and your opponent
changes them or makes them up as he plays to suit the
advancement of his side of the contest.
American Atheists has found itself in just such a ludicrous
position for many years now. But we are not alone. Other
"causes" and minority groups find that they are presented
with the same problem of needing to bring an entire system
gone astray back into line along a reasonable rule set; within
which they truly have "the right to redress for their
grievances." The exercising of that "right" has been chiefly
accomplished in a longstanding way by minorities through
the judicial system. Politics is a game for the wealthy, either
personally or collectively. It is ever increasingly so due
primarily to the factor of increased population. More people
means more congressional and legislative representation.
This in turn requires a politician - or politicians in the case
of lobbying groups - to expend more funds to reach those
wider numbers of voters. Cause organizations have been
left out in the cold in this race since most do not have
strongly enough defined voting blocks of persons who can
be rallied around single issues at the polls in a day and age
when just getting people out to vote at all is a cause struggle
in itself. Most causes also do not possess the economic
power required to reach all of the "key politicos" they need
to reach in the same way that industry and other "for profit"
concerns can.
So we have a legislative branch of gove'rnment pretty
much out of the reach of many minority cause concerns.
With the "squeaking wheel gets the grease" approach of an
over burdened legislative branch, those without the money
or the numbers to squeak loud enough simply don't get off
first base, or even onto it in most cases.
The executive branch is even harder to penetrate
requiring even -more money and a greater number of
"connections" - usually connections in the legislature. A
group that can't deal effectively in legislative circles is
certainly not going to get any place in executive circles.
Page 2

February, 1983

What is left over then is the judicial branch. Access to that

means of redress of grievances has a limiting factor as well.
That limiting factor is the need to go through an intermediary who knows how to get your grievance aired within the
constraints of a bizarre and often unpredictable set of
arbitrary and capricious rules. That intermediary is, of
course, your friendly law firm. Most law firms worth
contacting these days ask at least $100 per hour of anyone
regardless of perceived ability to pay. The legal fees are
often so massive for a constitutional law struggle within the
state over several years of litigation that it is all that a given
cause can do to meet the bill.American Atheists is not alone
in that posture. What then can you do ifyou are cut off from
presenting your case to the legislative and executive
branches of government and are limited to your access to
the judicial branch?
In some cases the answer is that you turn to violence. Let
no one be mistaken that violence and terrorism are caused
by an inability of governmental and societal institutions to
listen. When a group, especially a very small one, is placed
in a position of not being heard at all it is only a matter of
time before they grab some judge or other official and place
a gun at their head and say "now you will listen to me." Why
Atheists either individually or collectively have not come to
this point by now is an amazement to me. Most other
groups in the position of Atheists in the United States have
had a riot or two to their credit by now. It must be our
rationality that keeps us subdued.
In our case, instead of violence, we do the only thing we
can do, given the circumstances. We go into the judicial
system as often as we can, representing ourselves, or with
paid representation that is often not worth paying for,
depending on the strategy of making such a nuisance of
ourselves that the complained-of entity willsimply give in in
order to shut us up and get us off their back. Along the way
we can use this "litigation" most of the time knowing when
we go into the fight that we have the proverbial "snowball's
chance in hell" of winning, as a vehicle for gaining media
attention. The more media attention we can get the more
persons we can muster to our fold and thus the larger
monetary- and number-base we can amass in order to
someday place ourselves in the reach of other than judicial
redress of our grievances. If we "litigate" long enough, and
get attention that way long enough to get a base of
operation established, then we can begin to be influential in
making policy, the ultimate aim of any "cause" group. We
do not stand alone in this modus operandi. Many other
groups do the same thing, all in a waiting or holding pattern
when it comes to large substantive changes that we seek of
the system being realized in that golden hour when we have
"power" in the real sense of the word.
The American Atheist

One of the problems with our scheme is that the media is

not always cooperative. As the population grows and more
and more minorities and thus more and more causes spring
up, it gets harder and harder to get that media attention. W E\
must do things now that are much more "controversial"
than we had to do several years ago to get" coverage." Just
filing a suit does not do the job like it used to do. Now we
have to file a suit against a city council, for example, and
picket their meeting the same day as we file, to make the
papers at all. Competing against crime, economic troubles,
hair-trigger geopolitics and domestic political circuses for
air time is getting pretty tough. In order to keep your place
in the media you have to keep giving those government
entities one poke after another while trying to be as original
as possible in the way in which you poke them. It's like
playing with a snake. You want to irritate with a stick long
enough to keep the gathered crowd amused but not enough
so that you get bit. It is a delicate balance indeed.
The media also changes personnel as often as most of us
change our underwear. The pattern seems to be that a
young person, right out of college with a journalism BA,
comes to a station or paper and gets on the staff and is kept
until they gain enough field or street savvy that they think
they are worth more money. At that point it is more
economical for the station to get rid of them and get the next
greenhorn in line - at very low entry pay, of course. With
the exception of such institutions as, say, Johnny Carson's
Tonight show, almost every time a representative of
American Atheists goes back on a show the second time,
the host, producer, director, etc. have all changed. In fact,
the producers, hosts, and directors change more often than
the "talent," i.e. the persons who appear to be interviewed.
This constant turnover presents a problem to all those
seeking media attention. Just as soon as you get the
persons at a given station or newspaper to know you and
you get them willing to cover you on some regular kind of
basis, everything changes hands. One then has to work
one's way back into the good graces of a new editor, or
producer, or director and has to prove himself again as a
worthy and competent guest. A particular variation of this
problem for American Atheists is that most of the media
only knows of us through the name of our founder, Dr.
Madalyn Murray O'Hair. Since her landmark Supreme
Court case on school prayer was in 1963, now 20 years ago,
the new college age persons coming into the media don't
know who she is and frequently don't know that there even
is an Atheist organization in the United States. We are
trying to do something about this now by issuing a
comprehensive media booklet listing all the representatives
qualified to speak for American Atheists across the country
with their pictures and biographical data. This speaker's
bureau list i~being sent to the producer of every radio or TV
talk show in the nation that takes guests of our type. It is
also going to newspaper editors as well. We hope to have a good response by sending thousands of these out. We will
be following up with up-dated versions as well. The new
personnel in the media and the fact that they don't know
any better has caused a flurry of talk shows and interviews
across the country with clergy being called upon to
comment on separation-of-state-and-church
issues in
which they have a vested interest.
Getting on the air is, however, only part of the battle. The
Austin, Texas

next major problem after getting on the air or getting an

interview granted is to get your address out. Most media
sources will cover you in a way in which interested persons
hearing or seeing the coverage have no idea how to find you
if they desire to help. Media likes to be paid for advertising;
they don't like to give it up for nothing. Most of the time the
only thing good that comes from a particular media
engagement is a show of an address where people can write.
This is because the formats of almost every interview or talk
show is a "confrontational" one. The show or interviewer is
not at all interested in eliciting educational information from
us. They are there only for a scandal - either real or
contrived (and often the latter), a news story, or a fight, and
not for an orderly progressive presentation of a position.
Time and time again I, personally, have had a talk show host
fight with me on the air in place of an opponent or in place of
an audience that was not hostile enough to be to the host's
liking. This is the classic "devil's protagonist" position. Even
a sympathetic or outright Atheist host will say "Now, you
understand that I must play devil's protagonist tonight" and
proceed to tear into us with often more hostility than does
the opposition.
The media, being socially entrenched,
bows to the
opposition over and over again. A good example is the
following repeated scenario. I get up at 5:00 AM in the
morning, get dressed suitably for television, pack a bag, get
out to the airport, get on a plane, flyfor eight hours-changing
planes three or four times, arrive in a city just in time to take
a cab from the airport to the station in time for the
broadcast. There I find a minister, priest or rabbi. They are
fresh and clean-shaven, rested, and prepared with answers
to questions that they have been given in advance by the
show host or producer. They know all of the local people in
the studio and the host goes to their church. The station
gives them free air time every Sunday for their service. So, I
come in with a wrinkled suit, a five o'clock shadow,
windblown hair and a suitcase out in the hall and _am
confronted with a hostile interviewer, the fresh clergyman
who has been through "make up," and often an audience or
callers who have been whipped up against me by a promo
run before I arrived of which I knew nothing.
There you have your media opportunity. That is typical of
the kind of opportunity with which we are presented. Why
the clergyman? Why the audience that has nothing to say
and knows nothing about your topic that you will try to
present to them? "Equal time," that's why. We are told that
the station must keep a "balanced" presentation of views
and that we cannot be on the air unless we have an
opponent there. Now the fact that the opponent gets
constant free air time from the station, is local and can get
on any time (and does usually once a week), and has a
church on every corner where persons can hear his point of
view in four or five times a month minimum, while we are
most often from out of town, makes no difference. Then
why, when a religious representative comes on a show, are
not the Atheists called in to provide opposition equa1 time
for them? Well, "it just simply does not work that way," they
say, and "longstanding station policy is hard to change."
Counting all of its Chapters, American Atheists must
have at least 1,000 to 1,200 radio, TV and newspaper
appearances each year. Some Chapters are more active in
this area than others - most notably Denver, CO and

February, 1983

Page 3

Tucson, AZ. Despite the stumbling blocks that are placed in

our path we seem to be heard fairly well. We also have the
"The American Atheist Forum" cable TV series seen by 2;6
million persons each week in seven major outlets around
the country. This is our best form of media outreach
because it is one in which we control the format of our
presentation.
On a recent nationally distributed PBS television talk
show, our founder Dr. O'Hair had 28,000 calls in one hour
placed to the station by potential questioners. That is proof
positive that the public is interested in what we have to say if
we are given a chance to say it. Other cause groups have
had similar response on hot issues when given a media
chance. Those kind of figures are never publicized, however. The FCC, for example, has received 17,500,000 letter'
of protest against an alleged petition that American Atheists
is out to ban all religious broadcasting from the nation's
airways. We have rio such petition, we never have had, and
never will.Just the rumor of it was enough to generate that
kind of reply from the religious community. The media
deliberately soft peddles this, letting the rumor persist and
sometimes feeding the fire as well, so that more letters will

come and the FCC will be influenced to give more

consideration to the religious demands for expanded air
time and broadcast frequency power. If 17,500,000 letters
had been written about Reagan, on any topic, the nation
would have known about it from every media source. Since
the letters are in opposition to Atheists, nothing is done to
stop the rumor, ugly as it is.
American Atheists is stuck in the same position as many
other causes and we must just weather out the wait for the
sun to come out on the day when we have that needed
power and money. Until then, we just have to keep up the
same scheme of getting media attention as we can and or
making ourselves an irritant to any part of the system that
fails to follow its own rules as often as possible. That is why
our new motto "Unity Today, Power Tomorrow" is so
appropriate. You will be seeing that on many things we
publish throughout the year.
You can help individually with your letters to the editor,
and to your congressman, and your monetary support of
American Atheists during this holding pattern period. We
will try, in turn, on a national level, to make the best use of
what media time we can get, all the circumstances being as
they may be. ~.

The True Spirit of Atheism, Nelson Style

The town of DeQue.en is small and the hearts of Virginia
and Shirley Nelson are large enough to take in the entire
little city - and some persons just passing through.
Seeing what the economy is, the Nelsons, who own the
best restaurant in the town, decided that they should put a
little Atheism into christmas in Arkansas and the day before
that christian holiday, they quietly placed a display ad in the
local newspaper announcing that anyone who was hungry,
elderly, or poor, and had no place to go for a good christmas
dinner could come to their restaurant and eat - free of
charge, on December 25th, from 11:30 to 3:00.
Perhaps no one has ever done that in all of America.
Virginia and Shirley didn't know if anyone would even
show up, since they had been the object of a whispering
campaign against them for over two years - ever since
their Atheism had become openly known in that little
Arkansas town. The boycott had not affected their business. They served good, quality, nutritious food, well
prepared. They were friendly and hospitable. They were
warm and outreaching to the public ... and the Atheist
magazine was always there in the rack, for anyone to take
- free of charge.
So, they went down to their restaurant, Irom the hills
outside of town on a cold and blowy December 25th and
were surprised to find some persons waiting already. And,
the only thing to do was to invite them in and start to cook
- big, hot homemade rolls, turkey and ham, giblet gravy,
green beens, corn and mashed potatoes, with coffee or milk
or soft drinks. And, for dessert? - pumpkin pie with
whipped cream, what else does one have in America?
And, it was all free.
Large and small, old and not so old, 136 of the needy in
DeQueen, Arkansas, came and took as many helpings as
they needed to take to have food on December 25th. In
addition, six carloads of travelers, some pretty much down
on their luck, shared in the repast - one family with three
Page 4

February, 1983

small children in the car. And, like magic, there were

presents for the little ones at the end of the meal. Oh, the
local newspaper reporter came, probably to see if it was
true that the restaurant was open, or if it was true that the
meals were free.
But none of them knew Virginia and Shirley Nelson.
These quiet, unassuming, gentle folks, who represent
everything there is good in Atheism, had gone about their
task of providing some cheer for a holiday dear to religious
folk, simply out of a sense of how very bad are our times;
how very great are the needs; and how few are the people
who understand.
And then when it became obvious that this really was
happening, some others came in. There were money
donations. And, offers to help. But, Virginia and Shirley
handled the dirty dishes in the aftermath too. And, the
doors opened a half hour early and closed a half hour later
than the proposed time. But, Virginia just laughed, "We felt
so good, that we're thinking about doing it again next year.
We don't mind the dirty dishes. We enjoyed this as much as
the people who came."
And, her husband, Shirley (who is a member of the Board
of Directors of American Atheists) the next day bought
another display ad in the newspaper. "The FREE christmas
dinner for our community was very successful, and a heart
warming experience. We want to THANK everyone who
offered their services, support and help. The cash donations we received will go to the DeQueen Optimist Club.
And most all we must thank whover it was who brought the
boxes of toys for the kiddies. We look forward to next
christmas to do the same thing only BIGGER AND
BETTER. We wish one and all a Happy New Year."
And we are busting- at-the buttons proud of both of them.
Whenever you go through Arkansas, whereever you are
driving, don't forget that best restaurant in the state: Dairy
DeQueen, Hwy. 70, DeQueen, Arkansas - the one with the
heart.

HOW THE BIBLE

PUTS WOMAN

"IN HER PLACE"

The preachers constantly pat themselves on the back

and wax eloquent about their supposed accomplishment of
"elevating" the position of woman. The actual truth of the
matter is that christianity did exactly the opposite; christianity has actually aided in keeping woman in a degraded
position of servility. The agencies that have made it possible
for women to enjoy their present (limited) fair and just
treatment are a universally growing skepticism of things as
they were, a free public education, free speech and a
relatively free, untrammeled press. The censored movies
and the advertising- enslaved radio could do much good if
they were freed of religion and other special interests. The
very factors which have done so much to free womankind
and broaden her outlook have been fought at every turn by
the church and have been branded and damned by it as
"Atheism." Every agitator for women's rights has been
maligned form the pulpit as a veritable agent of satan. It has
always been thus; every factor tending to liberate the mind
has been hindered and execrated by the church.
The christians council at Macon (585 a.d.) consisting of
59 bishops devoted its time to a discussion of the question,
"Does a woman possess a soul?" After long and wordy
Austin, Texas

debate, women were granted a "soul" by a very slim

majority. The greek church, until very late, did not recognize women as human beings. Until the time of Peter the
great, the Russian census listed only so many males or
"souls," no woman being included. As late as the Woman's
Rights Convention in Philadelphia in 1854, an objector in the
audience cried out, "Let women first prove they have souls;
both church and state deny it." In christian England and the
United States, many cases are on record where women
have been sold as chattel property for sums varying from 5
to $5,000.
The Women's rights movement has accomplished its
work so long ago that most people do not now remember
the many instances of lecturers being showered by virulent,
bombastic pulpit-diatribes and the times they were barraged by stale eggs, rocks and even barnyard filth.
Let us look through the bible to see what the biblical laws
regarding women actually are. So, ifyou will, dear lady (and
you men too), dig out your king James bible from its dust
and mothballs, shake out the book worms and look up the
references we willlist for you in the following discussion. Let
us see how grossly the preachers misrepresent the biblical

February, 1983

and historical attitude of the church toward the equality and

freedom that women enjoy today.

~\~t'fS

"CREATION OF WOMAN"
A MERE AFTERTHOUGHT
The first thing in the bible, dear lady, that indicates your
bible-decreed social position is the mythical story of how
man was made in the image of god (gen. 1:26,27 - "And god
said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and
let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the
fowlof the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and

shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.' And
they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not
ashamed."). According to bible mythology, woman was
created merely as an afterthought because lordly adam
could find no "help meet" for himself from among the
animals (gen. 2:18-20 - "And the lord god said, 'It is not
good that the man should be alone; I willmake him an help
.meet for him.' And out of the ground the lord god formed
every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and
brought them unto adam to see what he would call them:
and whatsoever adam called every livingcreature, that was
the name thereof. And adam gave names to to all cattle, and
to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for
adam there was not found an help meet for him." ; 1 cor.
11:7-9,13 - "For a man indeed ought not to cover his head,
forasmuch as he is the image and glory of god: but the
woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the
woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man
created for the woman; but the woman for the man. . ..
Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto
god uncovered." ; john 16:21 - "A woman when she is in
travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon
as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more
the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.").
Now, wouldn't the human race be a funny looking mess if
adam had obeyed god's suggestion and taken a "help meet"
- say a mare, a cow, an ewe, a doe, a bitch or a vixenfrom among the animals?
Merely because your mythical ancestor (eve) was supposed to have eaten an apple, god decreed that you are to
be a slave of your husband. In proof of this I quote gen. 3:16:
"Unto the woman he (god) said, 'I will greatly multiply thy
sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth
children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall
rule over thee.' " This god-imposed punishment was not to
end with eve, but was imposed upon all women to the end of

"... Every agitator for women's rights has been maligned from the pulpit as a veritable
agent of satan. It has always been thus; every factor tending to liberate the mind has

over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.' So
god created man in his own image, in the image of god
created he him; male and female created he them." ; gen. 9:6
- "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be
shed: for in the image of god made he man.") while woman
was merely an inferior sort of creation from a rib of the first

time. This is the first illustration of your loving (?) god's

custom of punishing unoffending posterity for the sins of
their "erring" parents. These punishments of posterity
usually lasted only to the third, fourth or tenth generation

10TH "COMMANDMENT"

CLASSIFIES

WOMAN AS PROPERTY
The tenth commandment classifies woman as property
(ex. 20:17 - "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house,
thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor- his ass, nor any
thing that is thy neighbour's."), Woman is classified as a
man's property along with his house, menservants, maidservants, oxen and asses.
Women, ifthe bible is to be believed, are vile, unclean and
sin-inciting things. Whenever god scolded his chosen
people for worshipping other gods, he likened them to an
immoral woman who is unfaithful to her husband (ex. 34:1416 - "For thou shalt worship no other god: for the lord,
whose name is jealous, is a jealous god. Lest thou make a
covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a
whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods,
and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; And thou

unto Jerusalem; 'Thy birth and thy nativity is of the land of
Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an
Hittite .... I have caused thee to multiply as the bud of the
field, and thou hast increased and waxen great, and thou art
come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned,
and thine hair is grown, whereas thou wast naked and bare.
Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold,
thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over
thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee,
and entered into a covenant with thee,' saith the lord god,
'and thou becamest mine. Then washed I thee with water,
yea, I thoroughly washed away thy blood from thee, and I
anointed thee with oil. I clothed thee also with broidered
work, and shod thee with badgers' skin, and I girded thee
about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk. I decked
thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy
. hands, and a chain on thy neck. And I put a jewel on thy
forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown
upon thine head. Thus wast thou decked with fine gold and
silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and
broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil:
and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thou didst prosper
into a kingdom. And thy renown went forth among the
heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my
comeliness, which I had put upon thee,' saith the lord god,
'But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the
harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy
fornications on everyone that passed by; his it was. And of
thy garments thou didst take, and deckedst thy high places
with divers colours, and playedst the harlot thereupon: the
like things shall not come, neither shall it be so. Thou hast
also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I
had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and
didst commit whoredom with them. And tookest thy
broidered garments, and coveredst them: and thou hast set
mine oil and mine incense before them. My meat also which
I gave thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey, wherewith I fed
thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour:
and thus it was,' saith the lord god. 'Moreover thou hast
taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne
unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be
devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter? That
thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause
them to pass through the fire for them? And in all thine
abominations and thy whoredoms thou hast not remernbered the days of thy youth, when thou wast naked and
bare, and wast polluted in thy blood. And it came to pass

and hast made thee an high place in every street. Thou hast
built thy high place at every head of the way, and hast made
thy beauty to be abhorred, and hast opened thy feet to

Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians
thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy
whoredoms, to provoke me to anger. Behold, therefore I
have stretched out my hand over thee, and have diminished
thine ordinary food, and delivered thee unto the willof them
that hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, which are
ashamed of thy lewd way. Thou hast played the whore also
with the Assyrians, because thou wast insatiable; yea, thou
hast played the harlot with them, and yet couldest not be
satisfied. Thou hast moreover multiplied thy fornication in
the land of Canaan unto Chaldea; and yet thou wast not
satisfied herewith. How weak is thine heart,' saith the lord
god, 'seeing thou doest all these things, the work of an
imperious whorish woman; In that thou buildest thine

from other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none
followeth thee to commit whoredoms: and in that thou
givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore
thou art contrary. Wherefore, 0 harlot, hear the word of
the lord:' Thus saith the lord god; 'Because thy filthiness

every person is defiled merely because he has had one for a
mother. Psalm 51:5 ("Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and
in sin did my mother conceive me.") says that we are
"conceived in sin and shaped in iniquity." Provo 6:25 ("Lust
not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee
with her eyelids.") and matt. 5:28,29 ("But I say unto you,
that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath
committed adultery with her already in his heart.") say that
it is very sinful to look at a charming young woman and to
reflect upon her good looks. Verse 29 says, in this connection, "If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it
from thee." Read is. 3: 16-24 to learn what god willdo to you

WOMEN ARE SLAVES

Women are slaves. According to the bible, you literally
can't call your soul your own for you are at all times the
chattel property (slave) of either your father or your
husband (lord and master). You may read this in num.
30:3-16 - "If a woman also vow a vow unto the lord, and
bind herself by a bond, being in her father's house in her
youth; And her father hear her vow, and her bond
wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall
hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and
every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand.
The American Atheist

But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not
any of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound
her soul shall stand: and the lord shall forgive her, because
her father disallowed her. And if she had at all an husband,
when she vowed, or uttered ought out of her lips,
wherewith she bound her soul; And her husband heard it,
and held his peace at her in the day that he heard it: then her
vows shall stand, and her bonds wherewith she bound her
soul shall stand. But if her husband disallowed her on the
day that he heard it; then he shall make her vow which she
vowed, and that which she uttered with her lips, wherewith
she bound her soul, of none effect: and the lord shall forgive her. But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced,
wherewith they have bound their souls, shall stand against
her. And ifshe vowed in her husband's house, or bound her
soul by a bond with an oath; And her husband heard it, and
held his peace at her, and disallowed her not: then all her
vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her
soul shall stand. But ifher husband hath utterly made them
void on the day he heard them; then whatsoever proceeded
out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond
of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them
void; and the lord shall forgive her. Every vow, and every
binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it,
or her husband may make it void. But if her husband
altogether hold his peace at her from day to day; then he
establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon
her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in
the day that he heard them. But if he shall any ways make
them void after that he hath heard them; then he shall bear
her iniquity. These are the statutes, which the lord commanded moses, between a man and his wife, between the father
and his daughter, being yet in her youth in her father's
house." Your father may pledge you to be the subject of
human sacrifice if he should bea little foolish in the head.
You may read how jephthah sacrificed his daughter in the
11th chapter of judges, verses 30-32,34-39- "And jephthah
vowed a vow unto the lord, and said, 'If thou shalt without
faildeliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, Then it
shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my

me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the

mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.' And
he said, 'Go.' And he sent her away for two months: and she
went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon
the mountains. And it came to pass at the end of two
months, that she returned unto her father who did with her
according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no
man." After reading about jephthah, Iam sure you willagree
with me that he was foolish to burn up a piece of property
that he might have sold for a profit.
Woe to you if your father should sell you to be the
concubine of a preacher, for you may be very much out of
luck. Read the 19th chapter of judges from verse 1 to 30.
This tells how a cowardly preacher, in order to save his
miserable hide, gave his concubine to a mob who "knew"
her, and abused her all night until the morning. (You must
read gen. 4:1 ["And adam knew eve his wife; and she
conceived, and bare cain, and said, 'I have gotten a man
from the lord.' "] for the meaning of the word "knew.")
Then, when this despicable preacher got his concubine
home he took a knife, calmly butchered her and cut her into
twelve pieces. "And it was so, that all that saw it said, 'there
was no such deed done nor seen from ... (that) day unto
this day.' " We can believe this one sentence of the bible!
("And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king
in Israel, that there was a certain levite [preacher] sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a
concubine out of Bethlehem-judah. And his concubine
played the whore against him, and went away from him unto
her father's house to Bethlehem-judah, and was there four
whole months. And her husband arose, and went after her,
to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his
servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought
him into her father's house: and when the father of the
damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.... And he arose
early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the
damsel's father said, 'Comfort thine heart, I pray thee.' And'
they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine,
and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel's father, said

of Ammon to fight against them; and the lord delivered them
into his hands .... And jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his
house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with
timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside
her he had neither son nor daughter. And it came to pass,
when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, 'Alas,
my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art
one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth
unto the lord, and I cannot go back.' And she said unto him.
'My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the lord, do
to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy
mouth; forasmuch as the lord hath taken vengeance for
thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.' And
she said unto her father, 'Let this thing be done for me: let

the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and
departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem;
and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine
also was with him. And when they were by Jebus, the day
was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, 'Come, I
pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites,
and lodge in it.' And his master said unto him, 'We willnot
turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the
children of Israel; we willpass over to Gibeah.' ... And they
passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon
them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to
Benjamin. And they turned aside thither, to go in and to
lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in he sat him down in a

street of the city: for there was no man that took them into
his house to lodging. And, behold, there came an old man
from his work out of the field at even, which was also of
mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of
the place were Benjamites. And when he had lifted up his
eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and
the old man said, 'Whither goest thou?' And he said unto
him, 'We are passing from Bethlehem-judah toward the side
of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to
Bethlehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the
lord; and there is no man that receiveth me to house ....
And the old man said, 'Peace be with thee; howsoever let all
thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.' So he
brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the
asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the
men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round
about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the
house, the old man, saying, 'Bring forth the man that came
into thine house, that we may know him.' And the man, the
master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto
them, 'Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so
wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do
not this folly. Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his
concubine; them I willbring out now, and humble ye them,
and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto
this man do not so vile a thing.' But the men would not
hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and
brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and
abused her all the night until morning: and when the day
began to spring, they let her go. Then came the woman in
the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the
man's house where her lord was, till it was light. And her
lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the
house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman
his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and
her hands were upon the threshold. And he said unto her,
'Up, and let us be going.' But none answered ..Then the man
took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him
unto his place. And when he was come into his house, he
took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided
her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent
her into all the coasts of Israel. And it was so, that all that
saw it said, 'There was no such deed done nor seen from the
day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of
Egypt unto this day: consider of it,' take advice, and speak
your minds.")
See II kings 9:30-35 for the story of jezebel which further
indicates the chattel property status of bible believing
women. Poor jezebel was slain and fed to the dogs. In the
morning all that was left of her were some bones and the
palm of her hand ("And when jehu was come to Jezreel,
jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her
head, and looked out at a window. And as jehu entered in at
the gate, she said 'Had zimri peace, who slew his master?'
And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, 'Who is on
my side? who?' And there looked out to him two or three
eunuchs. And he said, 'Throw her down.' So they threw her
down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and
on the horses: and he trade her under foot. And when he
was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, 'Go, see now
this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king's
daughter.' And they went to bury her: but they found no

Isaiah 50: 1 ("Thus saith the lord, 'Where is the billof your
mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of
my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your
iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.' ") shows that a husband
may sell his wife if he wishes. In ruth 4:10 boaz says, "Ruth,
the Moabitess, have I purchased to by my wife." I chron.
2:35 says that "sheshan gave his daughter to jarha his

Read the first chapter of esther for further information
about how a wife is to serve her husband obediently and
what happened to queen vashti for disobeying. (9-22 "Also vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the
royal house which belonged to king ahasuerus. On the
seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with
wine, he commmanded ... the seven chamberlains ... to
bring vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal,
to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was
fair to look on. But the queen vashti refused to come at the
king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was
the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him. Then the
king said to the wise men, which knew the times, ... 'What
shall we do unto the queen vashti according to law, because
she hath not performed the commandment of the king
ahasuerus by the chamberlains?' And memucan answered
before the king and the princes, 'Vashti the queen hath not
done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and
to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king
ahasuerus. For this deed of the queen shall come abroad
unto all women, so that they shall despise thier husbands in
their eyes, when it shall be reported, "The king ahasuerus
commanded vashti the queen to be brought in before him,
but she came not." Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and
Media say this day unto all the king's princes, which have
heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too
much contempt and wrath. Ifit please the king, let there go a
royal commandment from him, and let it be written among
the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not
altered, That vashti come no more before king ahasuerus;
and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is
better than she. Arid when the king's decree which he shall
make shall be published throughout all his empire, ... all the
wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and
small.' And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and
the king did according to theword of memucan: For he sent
letters into all the king's provinces, into every province
according to the writing thereof, and to every people after
their language, that every man should bear rule in his own
house, and that it should be published according to the
language of every people.")
See hosea 3:1-3 ("Then said the lord unto me, 'Go yet,
love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress,
according to the love of the lord toward the children of
Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.' So I
bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an

unto her, 'Thou shalt abide for many days; thou shalt not
play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so
will I also be for thee.' ") where a preacher bought a whore

VIRGINITY REQUIRED FOR WOMEN

You ladies must be sure to retain proof of your virginity

"... if the man who takes you to be his wife claims that you were not a "virgin," you will

For this rule read deut. 22:13-21 - "If any man take a wife,
and go in unto her, and hate her, and give occasions of
speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and
say, 'I took this woman, and when I-came to her, I found her

damsel's father shall say unto the elders, 'I gave my

he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, "I

shall take that man and chastise him; And they shall amerce
him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the
father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil
name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he
may not put her away all his days. But if this thing be true,
and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel:
Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her
father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with
stones that she die: because she hath wrought follyin Israel,
to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil
away from you." Of course, the lordly male is not expected
to be a "virgin" when he marries. The woman is his property
and the owner of property does not need to grant his

is significant for there is no law in the world that gives chattel
property this right See the 19th chapter of genesis verses

PLURAL MARRIAGE FOR MEN ONLY

Now when some lordly male has condescended to take
you to be his wife, according to the bible rules you will be
expected to welcome to your marriage bed any other wife
or any number of extra wives that your husband may
choose to acquire. Ex. 21:10 specifies what your husband's
continued treatment of you should be "if he take him
another wife," in which case your wifely duties shall not be

February, 1983

Page 11

diminished ("If he take him another wife; her food, her

raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.").
If you do not present your husband with children in due
time, it is fitting and proper for you to give your personal
maid (slave) to your husband to bear children for him. See
gen. 16:1-6 ("Now sarai abram's wife bare him no children:
and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was
hagar. And sarai said unto abram, 'Behold now, the lord
hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my
maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her.' And
abram hearkened to the voice of sarai. And sarai abram's
wife took hagar her maid the Egyptian, after abram had
dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her
husband abram to be his wife. And he went in unto hagar,
and she conceived: and when she saw that she had
conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. And sarai
said unto abram, 'My wrong be upon thee: I have given my
maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had
conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the lord judge
between me and thee.' But abram said unto sarai,'Behold,
thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee.' And
when sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.")
and gen. 30: 1-5 ("And when rachel saw that she bare jacob
no children, rachel envied her sister; and said unto jacob,
'Give me children, or else I die.' And jacob's anger was
kindled against rachel: and he said, 'Am I in god's stead, who
hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?' And she
said, 'Behold my maid bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall
bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.'
And she gave him bilhah her handmaid to wife: and jacob
went in unto her. And bilhah conceived, and bare jacob a
son."). You may consider yourself fully repaid in that you
are then permitted to act as meanly toward your maid as
you wish. But don't forget to obey col. 3:18 ("Wives, submit
yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the lord.")
and eph. 5:22 ("Wives, submit yourselves unto your own
husbands, as unto the lord.") which specify that wives
should "submit" themselves to their husbands.

PROSTITUTION WINS OK
If you and your husband .should travel into a strange
country, and if you are pretty and desirable, the men of the
strange country will be attracted to you so that your
husband may find it profitable to sell your virtue. You will
see that this is perfectly OK if you read gen. 12:11-16("And
it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt,
that he said unto sarai his wife, 'Behold now, I know that
thou art a fair woman to look upon: Therefore it shall come
to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall
say, "This is his wife:" and they willkillme, but they willsave
thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be
well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of
thee.' And it came to pass, that, when abram was come into
Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very
fair. The princes also of pharaoh saw her, and commended
her before pharaoh: and the woman was taken into
pharaoh's house. And he entreated abram well for her sake:
and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.") and
gen. 20: 1-2 ("And abraham journeyed from thence toward
the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur,
and sojourned in Gerar. And abraham said of sarah his wife,
'She is my sister:' and abimelech king of Gerar sent, and

MENSTRUATING WOMEN "UNCLEAN"
Whenever you menstruate, you are to be "unclean" for
seven days. Any thing or any person that you touch while
"unclean" is defiled and made unclean by your very touch. If
your period should last longer than usual, you are to be
"unclean" until your issue has ceased. Read leu. 15:17-33
("And every garment, and every skin, whereon is the seed
of copulation, shall be washed with water, and be unclean
until the even. The woman also with whom man shall lie with
seed of copulation, they shall both bathe themselves in
water, and be unclean until the even. And if a woman have
an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put
apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be
unclean until the even. And every thing that she lieth upon
in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she
sitteth upon shall be unclean. And whosoever toucheth her
bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and
be unclean until the even. And whosoever toucheth any
thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe
himself in water, and be unclean until the even. And if it be
on her bed or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he
toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even. And if any
man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall
be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall
be unclean. And ifa woman have an issue of her blood many
days out of the time of her separation, or ifit run beyond the
time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her
uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall
be unclean. Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her
issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and
whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be' unclean, as the
uncleanness of her separation. And whosoever toucheth
those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes,
and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.
But ifshe be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to
herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. And on

the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles, or two
young pigeons, and bring them unto the priest, to the door
. of the tabernacle of the congregation. And the priest shall
offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt
offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for her
before the lord for the issue of her uncleanness. Thus shall
ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness;
that they die not in their uncleanness, when they defile my
tabernacle that is among them. This is the law of him that
hath an issue, and of him whose seed goeth from him, and is
defiled therewith; And of her that is sick of her flowers, and
of him that hath an issue, of the man, and of the woman, and
of him that lieth with her that is unclean.").
Ifyou should find this periodic status of an unclean social
pariah to be attractive to you, read lev. 12:2-8 where the
bible specifies that you are also sinful and "unclean" by
reason of having babies. Ifyou have a boy baby, you shall be
"unclean" 7 plus 33 days, but ifyou have a girl baby you shall
be twice as unclean, or socially unacceptable for a period of
80 days. This is the usual period of uncleanness from having
a boy baby plus another 40 days penalty to make sure that
you get rid of the additional contamination you have
incurred by bringing into the world another despised female
human being ("Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, 'Ifa
woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then
she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of
the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean. And in
the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.
And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying
three and thirty days: she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor
come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be
fulfilled. But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be

among your people." It might be well to remind you that

animals for the sacrifice were brought into the old-time
jewish temples for slaughter and that the floor sweepings for
this test will properly contain all sorts of animal filth.
Therefore, we are sure that this horrible decoction called
"bitter water" would be enough to cause any woman's belly
to swell and thigh to rot regardless of whether or not she
were guilty of infidelity. For the description of the above
procedure, see num. 5:12-31 ("If any man's wife go aside,
and commit a trespass against him, and a man lie with her
carnally and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be
kept close, and she be defiled, and there be no witness
against her, neither she be taken with the manner, and the
spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his
wife, and she be defiled: or ifthe spirit of jealousy come upon
him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled:
Then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and he
shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of
barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is an offering of jealousy, an offering of
memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance. And the priest
shall bring her near, and set her before the lord: And the
priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the
dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take,
and put it into the water: And the priest shall set the woman
before the lord, and uncover the woman's head, and put the
offering of memorial in her hands, which is the jealousy
offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water
that causeth the curse: And the priest shall charge her by an
oath, and say unto the woman, 'If no man have lain with
thee, and if thou hast not gone aside to uncleanness with
another instead of thy husband, be thou free from this bitter

unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall
continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six
days. And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a
son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year
for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for
a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the
congregation, unto the priest: Who shall offer it before the
lord, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be
cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her
that hath born a male or a female. And if she be not able to
bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young
pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a
sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her,
and she shall be clean.' ")

"LAW OF JEALOUSIES"
If your husband should be jealous and merely suspects
that you step out on him, whether or not he has any basis for
his suspicion, he shall take you to the preacher who shall
make "bitter water" by mixing floor sweepings with holy
water and you shall be compelled to drink this "bitter water"
and you shall say, "amen, amen." Thereupon, "your belly
shall swell, and your thigh shall rot: and you shall be a curse

water that causeth the curse: But if thou hast gone aside to
another instead of thy husband, and if thou be defiled, and
some man have lain with thee beside thine husband:' Then
the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing,
and the priest shall say unto the woman, 'The lord make
thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the lord
doth make thy thigh to rot, and thy belly to swell; And this
water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, to
make thy belly to swell, and thy thigh to rot:' And the
woman shall say, 'amen, amen.' And the priest shall write
these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the
bitter water: And he shall cause the woman to drink the
bitter water that causeth the curse: and the water that
causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter.
Then the priest shall take the jealousy offering out of the
woman's hand, and shall wave the offering before the lord,
and offer it upon the altar: And the priest shall take an
handful of the offering, even the memorial thereof, and burn
it upon the altar, and afterward shall cause the woman to
drink the water. And when he hath made her to drink the
water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be defiled, and
have done trespass against her husband, that the water that
causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter,

and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the
woman shall be a curse among her people. And if the
woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free,
and shall conceive seed. This is the law of jealousies, when a
wife goeth aside to another instead of her husband, and is
defiled; Or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon him, and
he be jealous over his wife, and shall set the woman before
the lord, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law.
Then shall the man be guiltless from iniquity and this woman
shall bear her iniquity."}. This "law of jealousies" indicates
how wrong and sinful it is for you to diminish the value of
your husband's property right in you. No bible test is
prescribed for your use ifyour husband should be unfaithful
to you. This omission is significant for there is no law in the
world that gives chattel property the right to protest the
acts of its owner.
If you must step out, read about tamar and learn the
necessary precautions (gen. 38:13-26 - "And it was told
tamar, saying, 'Behold thy father-in-law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.' And she put her widow's garments
off from her, and covered her with a veil, and wrapped
herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to
Timnath; for she saw that shelah was grown, and she was
not given unto him to wife. When judah saw her, he thought
her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face. And
he turned unto her by the way, and said, 'Go to, I pray thee,
let me come in unto thee;' [for he knew not that she was his
daughter-in-law.] And she said, 'What wilt thou give me,
that thou mayest come in unto me?' And he said, 'I willsend
thee a kid from the flock.' And she said, 'Wilt thou give me a
pledge, till thou send it?' And he said, 'What pledge shall I
give thee?' And she said, 'Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and
thy staff that is in thine hand.' And he gave it her, and came
in unto her, and she conceived by him. And she arose, and
went away, and laid by her veil from her, and put on the
garments of her widowhood. And judah sent the kid by the
hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from
the woman's hand: but he found her not. Then he asked the
men of that place, saying, 'Where is the harlot, that was
openly by the way side?' And they said, 'There was no harlot
in this place.' And he returned to judah, and said, 'I cannot
find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was
no harlot in this place.' And judah said, 'Let her take it to
her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast
not found her.' And it came to pass about three months
after, that it was told judah, saying, 'Tamar thy daughter
in-law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with
child by whoredom.' And judah said, 'Bring her forth, and let
her be burnt.' When she was brought forth, she.sent to her
father-in-law, saying, 'By the man, whose these are, am I
with child:' and she said, 'Discern, I pray thee, whose are
these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.' And judah
acknowledged them, and said, 'She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to shelah my son.'
And he knew her again no more."). (Note, whenever the
bible refers to the male or female organ of generation it uses
the word "thigh.")
If you should have no children and your husband is too
old for such things, be kind to the preachers and let them
stay overnight at your house and you will soon have a
"blessed event." See II kings 4:8-17 ("And it fell on a day,
that elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman;
and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as

she said unto her husband, 'Behold now, I perceive that this
is an holy man of god, which passeth by us continually. Let
us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us
set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a
candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he
shall turn in thither.' And it fell on a day, that he came
thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there. And
he said to gehazi his servant, 'Call this Shunammite.' And
when he had called her, she stood before him. And he said
unto him, 'Say now unto her, "Behold, thou hast been
careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee?
wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of
the host?" , And she answered, 'I dwell among mine own
people.' And he said, 'What then is to be done for her?' And
gehazi answered, 'Verily she hath no child, and her husband
is old.' And he said, 'Call her.' And when he had called her,
she stood in the door. And he said, 'About this season,
according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son.' And
she said, 'Nay, my lord, thou man of god, do not lie unto
thine handmaid.' And the woman conceived, and bare a son
at that season that elisha had said unto her, according to the
time of life.").

INHERITANCE TO REMAIN WITH

THE MEN OF THE TRIBE
Two thousand years ago in Rome, India and various
pagan countries, women's property rights were carefully
guarded. But, according to the bible code of law, women do
not have the right to inherit property. See num. 27:6-11 and
36:6-10 which provides for the difficultsituation which arises
ifa man dies leaving daughters but no sons. In order to carry
out the bible command that an inheritance shall not pass
from one family to another, it was decided that, in this case,
the property should inherit through the daughters. That is,
the daughters were to have temporary custody of the
property only if and when they have no brothers. In this
special and infrequently occurring situation, if a woman
should gain custody of any property, she was required to
marry a close relative as soon as possible so that children
"may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers." (num.
27:6-11 - "And the lord spake unto moses, saying, 'The
daughters of zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give
them a possession of an inheritance among their father's
brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their
father to pass unto them. And thou shalt speak unto the
children of Israel, saying, "If a man die, and have no son,
then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his
daughter. And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his
inheritance unto his brethren. And if he have no brethren,
then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father's brethren.
And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his
inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his
family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the
children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the lord
commanded moses."'''; num. 36:6-10 - "This is the thing
which the lord doth command concerning the daughters of
zelophehad, saying, 'Let them marry to whom they think
best; only to the family of the tribe of their father shall they
marry. So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel
remove from tribe to tribe: for everyone of the children of
Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his

fathers. And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance

in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of
the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel
may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers. Neither
shall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe;
but everyone of the tribes of the children of Israel shall keep
himself to his own inheritance.' Even as the lord commanded moses, so did the daughter of zelophehad.")
If a husband should die without any sons, his brother is
expected to go in to the widow to raise up "seed" to the
dead husband (deut. 25:5-10 - "If brethren dwell together,
and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead
shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's
brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and
perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her. And it
shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth him shall
succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his
name be not put out of Israel. And ifthe man like not to take
his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up to the
gate unto the elders, and say 'My husband's brother
refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will
not perform the duty of my husband's brother.' Then the
elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and ifhe

tion from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage:
Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the
angels; and are the children of god, being the children of the
resurrection.' ") and jesus says not a single word against it.

WOMEN EASILY DIVORCED

WITH NO CHANCE TO REMARRY
Deuteronomy
24:1 says that if a husband find some fault
with his wife, any little fault willdo, "then let him write her a
billof divorcement and give it in her hand, and send her out
of his house." We have been unable to find any place in the
bible where provision is made for" alimony." Therefore, this
modern idea must be of "satan." Isaiah 50: 1 ("Thus saith the
lord, 'Where is the billof your mother's divorcement, whom
I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I
have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold
yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put
away.' ") clearly illustrates this custom of divorce and
further the custom of selling women to creditors in satisfaction of debt. In matt. 5:31-32 ("It hath been said, 'Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of
divorcement' But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put

"... a man can divorce his wife at will with or without cause, marry one or more other
women if they are virgins; but a divorced woman shall not be permitted to marry
again."
stand to it, and say, 'I like not to take her;' Then shall his
brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders,
and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face and
shall answer and say, 'So shall it be done unto that man that
willnot build up his brother's house.' And his name shall be
called in Israel, 'The house of him that hath his shoe loosed.'
"). Read gen. 38:6-10 which tells about a case like this where
the brother, onan, used a little stratagem to avoid his
brotherly duty and was punished vilely therefore by god's
customary "loving" method ("And judah took a wife for er
his firstborn, whose name was tamar. And er, judah's
firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the lord; and the lord
slew him. And judah said unto onan, 'Go in unto thy
brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy
brother.' And onan knew that the seed should not be his;
and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife,
that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed
to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the
lord: wherefore he slew him also."). This custom of
"levirate" marriage is mentioned in luke 20:27-36 ("Then
came to him certain of the sadducees, which deny that there
is any resurrection: and they asked him, saying, 'Master,
moses wrote unto us, "If any man's brother die, having a
wife, and he die without children, that his brother should
take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother." There
were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and
died without children. And the second took her to wife, and
he died childless. And the third took her; and in like manner
the seven also: and they left no children, and died. Last of all
the woman died also. Therefore in the resurrection whose
wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.' And jesus
answering them said unto them, 'The children of this world
marry, and are given in marriage: But they which shall be
accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrecAustin, Texas

away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth

her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that
is divorced committeth adultery.") jesus concurs in this old
testament law, but adds that anyone marrying a divorcee
becomes an adulterer. Mark 10:12 says, "If a woman shall
put away her husband, and be married to another, she
committeth adultery." In other words, a man can divorce
his wife at will with or without cause, marry one or more
other women ifthey are virgins; but a divorced woman shall
not be permitted to marry again, for both she and the man
become adulterers by reason of the second marriage. The
bible laws regarding divorce clearly indicate for women an
inferior position of servility.

NO WOMEN TEACHERS
Women are not to teach school, "nor usurp authority
over the man, but to be in silence." See I tim. 2:12. Then
I cor. 14:34,35 says, "let your women keep silence in the
churches for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they
are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the
law.. __for it is a shame for women to speak in the church."
and if women want to learn anything to be sure to ask no
one except their husbands at home.

DEATH TO WITCHES
If a woman should live to be old, she will, naturally
become wizened, shrivelled, toothless and funny looking.
Sooner or later some ignorant bible believer willget the idea
that she is a "witch" whereupon it becomes incumbent
upon him to obey god's 11th commandment in exodus
22:18, "Thou shalt not suffer (permit) a witch to live." See
also leu. 20:27 ("A man also or woman that hath a familiar
spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they
shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon

February, 1983

Page 15

them.") and I sam. 28:3 ("And saul had put away those that
had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.").
These references indicate that, in case a woman is believed
to be a witch, her demise is to be accomplished by being
stoned to death.

money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.")
2)Her pappy could have sold her into slavery (ex. 21:7
- "And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant,

SLAVERY
There are many biblical ways in which a woman could
become a slave:
1)She could have been captured in war (num. 31:17-18
- "Now therefore kill every male among the little ones,
and killevery woman that hath known man by lying with
him. But all the women children, that have not known a
man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."; deut.
20:13-17 - "And when the lord thy god hath delivered it
into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with
the edge of the sword: But the women, and the little ones,
and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil
thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat
the spoil of thine enemies, which the lord thy god hath
given thee. Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which
are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of
these nations. But of the cities of these people, which the
lord thy god doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt
save alive nothing that breatheth: But thou shalt utterly
destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the
Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the .

thine enemies, and the lord thy god hath delivered them

Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house; and she

put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall

she shall not go out as the menservants do.").

3)Her husband could have sold her to a creditor to
satisfy a debt. See isaiah 50:1 (quoted previously).
4) Her husband could have become a slave after
marrying her, which automatically makes her a slave too.
5) She could be a slave by just plain being married for
ex. 21:8 says, "If she please not her master who hath
betrothed her to himself. "
Now, read ex. 21:20-21 which specifies that if a woman's
master beat her so that she die on the spot, he will be
punished, but if she linger a "day or two" before dying, her
master shall not be punished for she "is his money" ("And if
a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod and he die
under his hand; he shall be surely punished. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be
punished: for he is his money."). Ifher master knock out her
eye or tooth she can go free for the loss of her eye or tooth
(ex. 21:26,27 - "And if a man smite the eye of his servant,
or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free
for his eye's sake. And if he smite out his manservant's
tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for
his tooth's sake."). The law dealing with men slaves says
that they shall serve six years and go out free in the seventh
(ex. 21:2 - "If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he
shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for
nothing. "). If a woman's master give her to a man slave to
be his wife, any children she may bear are to be the
property of her master and when her husband's time is up
he may go out free, but she will remain a slave of her
master. If her husband loves her and wishes to keep her, he
will have to remain a slave "and his master shall bore his
ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him forever. "
See ex. 21:4-6 - "If his master have given him a wife, and

she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her
children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.
And if the servant shall plainly say, 'I love my master, my
wife, and my children; I will not go free:' Then his master
shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the
door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his
ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever."
Jesus was friendly with women who were "sinners," i.e.
were of questionable morality. In this, he obeyed the law
given in joshua 6:17,25 in which rahab and her descendants
were given specially considerate treatment which was to
last "even unto this day" ("And the city shall be accursed,
even it, and all that are therein, to the lord: only rahab the
harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house,
because she hid the messengers that we sent. ... And
joshua saved rahab the harlot alive, and her father's
household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel
even unto this day because she hid the messengers, which
joshua sent to spy out Jericho."), but, as far as we know, he
did not go so far as to follow the example of hosea (hosea 1:2
- "And the lord said to hosea, 'Go, take unto thee a wife of
whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath
committed great whoredoom, departing from the lord.' " ;
hosea 2:1-6 - "Say ye unto your brethren, ammi; and to
your sisters ruhamah. Plead with your mother, plead: for
she is not my wife, neither am I her husband: let her
therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight, and her
adulteries from between her breasts; Lest I strip her naked,
and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as
a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with
thirst. And I willnot have mercy upon her children: for they
be the children of whoredoms. For their mother hath played
. the harlot: she that conceived them hath done shamefully:

her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him,
saying, 'Send her away; for she crieth after us.' But he
answered and said, 'I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of
the house of Israel.' Then came she and worshipped him,
saying, 'Lord, help me.' But he answered and said, 'It is not
meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.'
And she said, 'Truth, lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs
which fall from their master's table.' Then jesus answered
and said unto her, '0 woman, great is thy faith: be it unto
thee even as thou wilt.' And her daughter was made whole
from that very hour." According to the latter reference
jesus snubbed the Canaanite woman and called her a "dog."
In the first reference he snubbed and spoke disparagingly of
his own mother.
Jesus said, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law,
or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.Till
heaven and earth shall pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no
wise pass from the law." (matt. 5:17-18). This implies that
jesus intended to uphold all these vicious old testament laws
subjugating the fair sex.
We have been unable to discover in the bible any mention
of women numbered in any census. You may see every kind
of property listed, which has always been considered the
spoil of war, the just reward of the victor. With this in mind,
read the law of god as enunciated by eleazar, the levite
(priest). You may see what we mean by reading num. 1;2-46
("Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of
Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with
the number of their names, every male by their polls; From
twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to
war in Israel: thou and aaron shall number them by their
armies. And with you there shall be a man of every tribe;
everyone head of the house of his fathers. And these are the

and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.'

make a wall, that she shall not find her paths.") in taking a
whore for a wife.
Jesus either ignores or speaks harshly to other women.
See luke 8:19-21 - "Then came to him his mother and his
brethren, and could not come at him for the press. And it
was told him by certain which said, 'Thy mother and thy
brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.' And he
answered and said unto them, 'My mother and my brethren
are these which hear the word of god, and do it.' " ; matt.
12:46-50 - "While he yet talked to the people, behold, his
mother, and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak
with him. Then one said unto him, 'Behold, thy mother and
thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.' But
he answered and said unto him that told him, 'Who is my
mother? and who are my brethren?' And he stretched forth
his hand toward his disciples, and said, 'Behold my mother
and my brethren!' For whosoever shall do the will of my
father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister,
and mother." ; matt. 15:22-28 - "And, behold, a woman of
Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him,
saying, 'Have mercy on me, 0 lord, thou son of david; my
daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.' But he answered

female sex in regard to vital statistics than we take of mangy
alley cats today.

TREATMENT OF WOMEN IN WAR

The war-time treatment for women prescribed by the
bible gives further indication that they are to be regarded as
property. See num. 31:17-18 - "Now therefore kill every
male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath
known man by lying with him. But all the women children,
that have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for
yourselves." and deut. 20:13,14 - "And when the.lord thy
god hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every
male thereof with the edge of the sword: But the women,
and the lIttle ones, and the cattle, and an that is in the city,
even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and
thou shalt eat thy spoil of thine enemies, which the lord thy
god hath given thee." According to judges 5:30,31, every
soldier may expect, as a matter of right, to have "a damsel
or two" ("Have they not sped? have they not divided the
prey; to every man a damsel or two; to sisera a prey of
divers colours, a prey of divers colours of needlework, of
divers colours of needlework on both sides, meet for the
necks of them that take the spoil? So let all thine enemies
perish, 0 lord: but let them that love him be as the sun when
he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty
years."). And, in perpetual honor of rahab, the lady of
Jericho's red-light district (refer back to joshua 6:17,25), all
those among you who are harlots shall be given especially
considerate treatment above all other captives. The purpose of these laws is to save private and public property for
the victor's enjoyment. Therefore, all those among the
captives who are not young virgins or harlots shall be done
to death according to bible-described methods.
Hosea 13:16 describes the bible inspired method of killing
off the soldiers, male infants and pregnant women thus:
"they (soldiers) shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be
dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped
up." This brutish treatment of pregnant women is mentioned in II kings 8:12,15 ("And hazael said, 'Why weepeth
my lord?' And he answered, 'Because I know the evil that
thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds
, wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with
the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their
women with child.' "); amos 1:13 ("Thus saith the lord, 'For
three transgressions of the children of ammon, and for four,
I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they
have ripped up the women with child of Gilead; that they
might enlarge their border.' "); and approvingly in II kings
15:16 ("Then menahem smote Tiphsah, and all that were
therein, and the coasts thereof from Tirzah: because they
opened not to him, therefore he smote it: and all the women
therein that were with child he ripped up."). All noncombatant males (other than infants) and all those females
(excepting pregnant women and harlots) who have known
man by lying with him are to be executed by the use of .

It is our humble opinion that the late, unlamented herr
Hitler was a piker when it came to cooking up atrocities. We
believe that Hitler could have perpetrated more atrocious
atrocities had he used the bible as his text book.
Can those who have read this far and have looked up the
references we have provided still believe that the bible is the
word of an omnipotent, omniscient and infinitely benevolent god? Ifyou can still believe the bible mythology, you are
welcome to your pious misconception provided you do not
attempt to put into practice the examples described for you

was written by ignorant, ancient priests who put into it the
barbaric customs, laws and superstitions of their time. We
feel that the bible is not an inspired guide to morals, science,
politics or anything else; nor is it of any use to us other than
to furnish a contrast between ancient barbarism and
modern civilization.
Yea, verily, the preachers who always grab all the credit
for freeing modern women remind one of barnyard roosters
who, upon finding a delicious morsel, cluck loudly to their
adoring females to come see what they have provided them.
Invariably they gobble the tidbit themselves just as the first
adoring one arrives.

and the Chairman of the Madras Metropolitan Water

Supply and Sewerage Board.
Vaidyanathan was scheduled to play for a fortnight for
the edification of the gods. "This kirtan (music recital) has
potential to cause instant rains to meet the water shortage,"
said he.
He chose ragas (tunes) which a famous composer had
used in 1830 during a year of severe drought. "0 devi, you
are so merciful, I pr~y to thee for rain, good rain. Give rain
forthwith. Give rain. Give rain." Whereupon, his biographer
recorded, clouds appeared in a blue sky and there was such
a downpour as had seldom been witnessed.
Under another scorching blue sky, Vaidyanathan's recital began appropriately with a number titled "Come down,
thunderous rain!" Then followed an invocation to the
mother goddess (Mari give us rain). The climax - "Let it
rain! Let it rain!" - was what would surely bring down a
flood.
Nothing happened.
But the state government backed religion to the hilt by
instructing all district officials to provide "the necessary
facilities to any social or religious group that took upon itself
to provoke showers from the cruelly calm skies."
. However, the people of a place called Gudibanda had
better success. When the prayers of local hindu priests and
muslim mullahs failed to elicit any response from the rain
god, the populace solemnised the marriage of a jenny and a
jackass. It rained cats and dogs all night!

Powerful figures in Washington, men like former National

Security Council director Zbigniew Brzezinski, Henry Jackson, and Barry Goldwater, men who cling to the dangerous
illusion that the United States can continue to police the
world through economic pressure, political muscle, and
nuclear blackmail, have labelled detente a "deception" and
a "one-way street." These men fear the "threat of peace"
and are using their considerable influence and resources to
undermine and block any relaxation of tension between the
United States and the Soviet Union, any move toward
making detente more real.
Is detente a "deception?" Is it something that threatens
our national security? We think not. Willard C. Mathias, for
twelve years a member of the Board of National Estimates
of the CIA, recently outlined the meaning of detente in an
article for the American Committee of East-West Accord.
He defined it as "(1) A continuing process of seeking to relax
tensions; (2) An attempt to work out rules for coexistence
as an alternative to blowing each other up; (3) An attempt to
work out mutually advantageous relationships which willtie
both countries into cooperation and diminish the chances
of confrontation."
Far from being a "one-way street," detente is a policy that
has much to offer Americans. It is a way of breaking down
trade barriers such as the discrimatory Jackson-Vanik Bill.
The development of detente could expand our trade with all
the Socialist countries to an estimated $50 billion. This
would go a long way towards solving our unemployment
problem. Detente is a way of increasing cooperation in
scientific research and in cultural matters. It willultimately
enable us to turn our attention away from a false external
threat and toward the serious problems of a deteriorating
industrial base and its attendant fiscal and urban crises.
This is the hope for detente that is shared by 71% of all
Americans, according to a Harris poll. The image of the
"Communist threat," used so often in the past to whip
public opinion into line behind a policy of increased arms
spending and foreign intervention, is fading from the public
Austin, Texas

mind. Significantly, this is also the view of many "Kremlinologists" who have changed their opinions in recent years.
Former diplomats like Averill Harriman and George Kennan, recognizing the new situation in the world, have
thrown their weight behind a policy of detente.
The vast majority of Americans support such a policy
because, unlike the generals of the Pentagon, they know
that a nuclear war cannot be won, and that the real threats
to our way of life come from increasing joblessness,
poverty, crime, and attacks on our health and our environment. As Congressional Black leader Parren Mitchell said,
"I have no great fear of the Soviet Union or China. If this
democracy should ever fail,it willcome from within because
of the enormous disparity between the rich and the poor."
It is clear that the real motive behind the attack on
detente is the desire to preserve our swollen defense
budget. This welfare program for the large "defense"
corporations, served up in the guise of national security, is
the single major cause of inflation and social decay, and is
making America uncompetitive with the rest of the world. It
is no accident or coincidence that our major competitors,
West Germany and Japan, have been able to build up their
industrial base and enjoy phenomenal rates of growth with
relatively small military budgets. Because we have neglected our basic industries in favor of armaments, those
industries are now threatened with obsolescence, and the
goods they made are now produced in other countries and
imported into the United States. As syndicated columnist
Pete Hamill has recently said, "The single most important
factor in the current inflationary nuttiness is a peacetime
military machine that is eating at the economic heart of
America. Until the generals and their corporate allies are
brought under control, and all that money is used for goodsproducing jobs, inflation is inevitable."
Our country no longer leads the world in providing its
people with the best quality of life, as measured in terms of
longevity, adequate health care, job security, low infant
mortality, and safety in the streets. The resources we need
to solve these problems are drained off by a militaryindustrial complex that feeds on the very threat of war it
created. The truth is that if we reject detente by pouring
untold billions of dollars into the military machine and by
conducting a tough, belligerent foreign policy, we are
cutting the throat of our own economy.
Former Secretary of State Cyrus Vance has said that we
must turn away from the scramble to be "Number One"
militarily, and honestly search for ways to co-exist, reducing
the burden that endangers our lives, our freedoms and our
happiness.
It is long past time for us to start building more and better
housing, to reduce taxes, improve health care, eliminate the
slums, eradicate crime, and to make healthy and secure
habitats out of our deteriorating cities. Defense expenditures build no schools or libraries, repair no streets, and
create no useful goods. And what are the alternatives to
detente - more military spending, higher taxes and more
inflation, not to mention a crippled economy and the
endless fear of nuclear war. This is a past from which we
must escape, not a future to which we should condemn our
children.

THE DE-UGLIFICATION OF ATHEISM

We, as Atheists, do not appeal to

Where, however, is the Atheist's shrine? Where the

responsibility of freethinkers,
writers, artists, musicians,
sound-minded
scientists, and other such intellectual people, to express in beautiful, creative and palatable ways the
atheistic perspective? Assuredly this can and must be done;
yet it saddens me to wonder how many Atheists have plied
their trades and surrendered
their energies and talents to
the church, for monetary gain. Surely Atheist carpenters,
painters, architects, electricians, stone masons, artists and
artesans alike, have contributed their time and expertise to
religious structures and undertakings.
I infer that if the time, energy, and money of Atheists are
not spent on atheistic endeavors, at least Atheists should
not support theistic orders and institutions via contributory
mind- power and body- power.
Long have I contemplated
the artistic potential of Atheism and considered the beautiful aspects of the atheistic
postulate. I have done so, knowing multitudes of people will
not embrace an ideology or reality they've been brainwashed to believe is monstrous and debasing - that they
hold to be the antithesis of beauty, virtue, and personal
fulfillment. Beauty is powerful, motivating, inspirational;
and until Atheism is de-uglified, by Atheists, it will not in all
likelihood gain the respect that religions have seduced
through the mediums of human art. Plainly, the much
maligned image of Atheism is in need of human "saviors."
I opine it is well worth considering why so many people

THE COMING INQUISITION

The following is a detailed summary of "The Index is

Rising Still Menacing" by Domenico Del Rio in Epoca (Dee.
1, 1979), a major Italian magazine published in Milan by
Mondadori.

* * * * *
Austin, Texas

The index librorum prohibitorum (index of forbidden

books) was invented by pope paul IV, Pietro Carafa, who
caused its first official edition in 1559. He was a terrible
pope, a baron, who saw heresies in everything, even in
cardinals. When he died, the people were so tired of his
harsh dealings that they seized the palace of the inquisition,
tore down his statue that had been erected on Capitoline
Hill, and threw it in the Tiber.
The index went through 31 editions, until 1948. Additional sheets were issued such as the 1954 one which lists
some or all the works of Gide, Moravia, D' Annunzio,
Anatole France, Darwin, the philosophers Sartre, Croce,
Gentile and others.
Excepting cardinals and bishops, no one was allowed to
read or even touch the forbidden books, unless special
permission was granted. However, in 1966, a liberalization
policy was advanced by cardinal Ottaviani (who was
otherwise known as the "policeman of the church") and
approved by paul VI. According to it, the index was morally
obliging but did not preserve the force of law. The official
view was that "the church trusts the mature conscience of
the faithful."
Cardinal Ottaviani, however, knew that if the index had
been removed, there remained canon 1399 in the code of
canonical law. This canon has to do with censorship.
Certain books, such as bibles published by protestants,
anticlerical books, and antireligious books, are automatically forbidden by it. Ottaviani himself used this canon for his
1949 decree concerning the excommunication of communists, and extended its application to books, periodicals,
and any other publication which supports communist
doctrine or action.

moral and theological questions. The fact is that the plan of

restoration is being delineated bit by bit: To the priests who
asked to leave the priesthood, he has replied that they made
a promise (took a vow) and they have to keep it. Tothe nuns
who might fall into error or stray, he offers the rule of a
stable life. Then there is the summoning of Dutch bishops to

theological discussions. There is the often repeated decision to sweep away all "different and dangerous doctrines"
which are not coherent with truths revealed and infallibility
promulgated in the course of (papal) teaching.

book, Jesus, A Tentative in Christology.

"The christian people is disoriented, because it no longer
meets with its familiar vocabulary and notions." This is the
alarm which the sacred congregation for the doctrine of the
faith has sounded in a document addressed to the catholic
bishops. The document drew attention to some "eternal
verities" such as the immortality of the soul, the resurrection of bodies, paradise, hell, and purgatory. The Roman
congregation was preoccupied, because it saw "in the
common conscience of the faithful a slow decay and the
progressive extinction of these truths." Presently the same

"Is there behind the face of the Polish pope ... a reactionary pope? ... The fact is
that the plan of restoration (of the inquisition) is being delineated bit by bit."
"It is natural that, in this context, there willtake effect that
traditional instrument of repression which has been 'The
Universal and Roman Inquisition,' called afterwards, in
1908, 'Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office' by
Pius X, who made it function in full sway against the
modernists." In 1965, paul VI changed its name to "Sacred
Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith," thus trying to
remove its inquisitional overtones and to promote it "to
sweetly call back to goodness those who err."
Sweetness is probably the last virtue which the famous
Roman congregation has been able to exercise. "Books
-these vehicles of ideas - have always been a plague for
the Holy Office." The latest public condemnation fell, on
April 3, 1979, on When I Say God, by the French dominican
Pohier. The Dutch Edward Schillebeechx was summoned
to appear in Rome in mid-December '79 to account for his

be followed by the bishops in indicating which books may be
read and which must be avoided. In practice, this may be a
return, though modernized and camouflaged, to the famous
"index of forbidden books."
Before the invention of the printing press, control over
books was simple: dangerous books were burned. Sometimes, to enliven the show, authors were burned, too. After
the invention of the press, control became more complicated: not only men of theological, philosophical, and moral
(including "political") sciences were involved, but also
writers of newsletters and leaflets. Thus, in the sixteenth
century, the terrible sixtus V hanged one man on account of
the latter's illicit curiosity and gathering of news where
falsehoods are mixed with truths and uncertainties; the
pious pius V likewise hanged a man.

If the 19th century movement known as political zionism

- whose dream has been realized in the state of Israel has inspired millions of jews with a sense of pride and lofty
purpose, it has also smitten thousands of other jews with
feelings of shame and disillusionment. The latter individuals,
secular and religious, repudiate what is archaic and insular
in judaism, choosing instead to both identify with and exalt
what they see as "humanistic values" most discernible in the
works of the "prophets." They are, consciously or otherAustin, Texas

wise, proponents of what certain jewish philosophers have

called the "prophetic imperative: " an ethical concept which
obliges one to "struggle against war, oppression, discrimination and poverty"! regardless of the religious or ethnic
background of the victims. "In the sufferer let me see only
the human being," goes the prayer of Marcus Herz, 18th
century Berlin phvsician." "Religion? I an an Atheist. Jewish
nationalism? I am an internationalist. In neither sense am I,
therefore, a jew. I am, however, a iew by force of my
unconditional solidarity with the persecuted and exterminated," declared Polish-born historian and biographer
Isaac Deutscher."
While recognizing the irrestistible attraction Palestine
held for jewish visionaries and those seeking refuge from
anti-Semitic outrages, it was the hope of humanist jews that
the zionist movement would temper its nationalist goals and
policies to render them, as far as practicable, consonant
with what they thought they saw as universal moralities
found in the Hebrew scriptures. Thus it was that Albert
Einstein, addressing a zionist convocation in the 1920's,
referred to the jewish people as a "community of moral
tradition" and exhorted the jewish settlers in Palestine to
"solve the problem of livingside by side with our brother the
arab in an open, generous and worthy manner," seizing the
"opportunity of showing what we have learnt in the
thousands of years of our martyrdom."4
But even as this great humanist was speaking, the jewish
national fund (jnf), a creature of the world zionist organization, was methodically purchasing vast tracts of land from
absentee arab landlords and, in the process, dispossessing
thousands of "fellahin" who watched as their farms, orchards, and even entire villages, where they had lived for
generations, pass into the hands of jewish colonists from
Poland, Russia, Germany and elsewhere. Stripped of their
livelihood and ancestral homes, these arab peasants were
further deprived of the opportunity, however humiliating, of
obtaining employment from jewish settlers, many of whom
adhered to the official zionist policy of excluding arab
workers from jewish-owned enterprises. It was in the
context of these events that Dr. Arthur Ruppin, chief
architect of zionist colonization in Palestine, wrote in 1928:
"It became clear to me how hard it is to realize zionism in a
way compatible with the demands of universal ethics.">
During the next twenty years, jewish-arab relations,
enfeebled by outbreaks of intercommunal bloodletting,
deteriorated and then collapsed entirely amid the stupefyingrevelations of the Holocaust and news of its benumbed
survivors crowding the D.P. camps of Germany. The
zionists were determined to make room exclusively in
Palestine for this shattered "remnant" of European jewry.
Accordingly, between Dec. 18, 1947, as termination of the
British Mandate was approaching and, with it, commencement of the UN partition of Palestine into separate jewish
and arab states - arrangements the arab population never
accepted or was never consulted about - and Israel's

terrorist groups and the regular army, the Hagunah,

attempted to seize territory not allotted to them in the
Partition and drive out the remaining arabs. "In the months
preceding the arab invasion (of May 15, 1948)," wrote
Menahem Begin, head of the right-wing Irgun, "... we
continued to make sallies into the arab area. In the early
days of 1948, we were explaining to our officers and men,
however, that this was not enough

Civil Rights, responded:

"If rabbi Kaplan really wanted to know what happened, we old jewish settlers in Palestine who witnessed the flight could tell him how and in what
manner we, jews, forced the arabs to leave cities and
villages ... some of them were driven out by force of
arms; others were made to leave by deceit, lying and
false promises. It is enough to cite the cities of Jaffa,
Lydda, Ramie, Beersheba, Acre from among numberless others.:"?
Of the resultant flight of some 600,000 Palestinian Arabs,

"... 'Religion? Iam an Atheist. Jewish nationalism? I am an internationalist. In neither

sense am I, therefore, a jew. I am, however, a jew by force of my unconditional
solidarity with the persecuted and exterminated,' declared Polish-born historian and
biographer Isaac Deutscher."
In its gentlest form this involved no more than the
spreading of rumors. YigalAllon, commander-in-chief of the
shock troops of the Haganah, who in later years became a
Foreign Minister, recalls how this worked on May 10 in the
northern region of present -day Israel:
"I gathered all the jewish mukhtars (civil officers),
who have contact with arabs in different villages, and
asked them to whisper in the ears of some arabs, that
a great jewish reinforcement has arrived in Galilee and
that it is going to burn all the villages of the Huleh.
They should suggest to these arabs, as their friends,
to escape while there is still time. And the rumor
spread in all the areas of the Huleh that it is time to
flee. The flight numbered myriads."? (my emphasis)

Chaim Weizmann, first President of Israel, later remarked

to US Special Representative James MacDonald, that it
was a "miraculous simplification of Israel's task."ll

But there was violence too - the most notable case being
the massacre, on April 9, 1948, of 254 men, women, and
children in the "peaceable" arab village of Deir Yassin,
outside the area assigned to the Israeli state, by members of
the Stern and Irgun gangs. As word of the massacre spread,
thousands of arabs in nearby villages fled in panic. In the
ensuing War of Independence between Israel and the five
numerically inferior* armies of the arab league, a priority of
the jewish armed forces (Plan Dalet) was the expulsion of
additional thousands of arabs.f In Lydda, for example, on
July 11, the late Moshe Dayan is describkd by zionist
historians Jon and David Kimche, as driving through at "fuil
speed" and "shooting up the town" to create "confusion
and a degree of terror," thereby driving out its "population
of 30,000."9 Incensed by the incredulity of an American
rabbi regarding these operations, Nathan Chofsi, a founding member in 1935 of the Israeli League for Human and

family of nations, and that the Palestinian arabs, who have

dwelt on and cultivated the land during their centuries-long
absence, are aliens and squatters. Unfortunately, support
for this view has been garnered from many well-meaning
christian fundamentalists:
"The conflict really comes down to the Palestinians.
They claim they are Canaanites who originally held
the land. It depends on whether you accept the word
of god as saying to moses that you shall possess this
land and the Canaanites shall be driven out. If you
accept that as the word of god, that's the word of
doom for the Canaanites and their descendants and
the word of promise for the Israelis and their descendants."12
As a consequence of this attitude, and in spite of the
Proclamation of Independence which promised to "uphold
the full social and political equality" of all Israelis, the arab
population of 650,000 has been relegated - by the zionists'
own admission - to the status of second-class citizens:
"The conventional wisdom regarding Israel's arab
population is that they are inherently antagonistic to
Israel. Presumably their attitudes cover the spectrum
from passive acquiescence to vocal and even active
hostility, and that as their standard of living and

Arabs, as well as all non-jews, cannot purchase, lease, or
build a home on the 94% of Israeli territory owned by the
jewish national fund - "land owned in perpetuity by the
jewish people - not the Israeli people, which does not exist
as a legal entity."14 They are restricted in their places of

and adequate funds for their upkeep, 15they attend separate
schools, and because nearly all arabs are "exempted" from
military service, they are forfeited certain "National Insurance benefits" for their children'" and the "Discharge

As Abed Kabub, Chairman of the moslem Committee of

Dr. Yitzhak Bailey, a scholar who
has studied the desert dwellers for a decade, fulminates
against this treatment:
"Such acts of discrimination and injustice against
human beings, citizens of the state who are subject to
its goodwill, are first and foremost a total deviation
from the moral values which the jews have developed
over thousands of years and under the guidance of
which we have survived and continue to survive in
strange lands. The Negev Bedouin make up only 1% of
the country's population, but our treatment of them
serves as an indicator of the political sanity and
morality of the jews of Israel."2o (My emphasis.)
In the Golan Heights (already annexed) and on the West
Bank and in Gaza, taken respectively from Syria, Jordan
and Egypt in the June '67 war, Israel, has, by devious means,

As one moves towards the periphery of the jewish state,
the mechanisms of repression and discrimination against
arabs become more visible and horrendous. In the Negev,
from which some 50,000 semi-nomadic Bedouin fled in
1948, the Israel Lands Authority has been relentlessly
striving, through the operations
of its benignly named
"Green Patrol," to forcibly resettle the remaining 15,000 a number of whom have served in the Israel Defense Forces

In a desperate attempt to circumvent popular sentiment,
the so-called "civilian administration" on the West Bank -

headed until recently by a former university professor and

reserve army officer - has dismissed a number of democratically elected mayors, and established in their place
collaborationist "village leagues." The politically sophisticated in Israel have no illusions about the efficacy of this
strategy. "Whether we like it or not," stated an editorial in
the Hebrew daily Al Hamishmar (March 19, 1982), "the
decisive majority of the Palestinian public considers the
PLO as its exclusive and true representative." Meanwhile,
as part and parcel of the Israeli occupation, the authorities
meticulously scrutinize all aspects of the population's
cultural life, proscribing nationalist songs, the provocative
use of nationalist color schemes in art work,22and endeavor

Israel is the IDF, service inthe IDF - that is, killing of arabs
or together facing the possibility of being killed by them,"
concludes philosopher and biochemist Yeshayahu Leibowitz, professor emeritus at the Hebrew University in

According to the IDF's chief psychologist, "the mystique
of combat service" has had a profound effect on the "selfidentity" of Israeli youth. Surveys of 17-year olds registering
for induction indicate 90% would have volunteered even if
service were not compulsory. " 'Commando' and 'paratrooper' continue to be words that appeal to our young
people. They denote values and status in the eyes of the
prospective recruit."27 Attempts are now being made to

"... the arab population of 650,000 has been regulated - by zionists' own admission

to expunge from texts of poetry and prose any lines which,
it is feared, might foster a rebellious spirit. Appalled by the
incongruity of jews attacking the written word, one Israeli
writer exclaimed:
"Try to deny ajew in an arab country, in Russia, the
right to read as he wishes about Israel, to study
Hebrew, to be a zionist - and the holy of holies has
been violated. Deny this to the arabs of the territories
- and you are only defending your basic 'national
rights.' If it's a matter of our rights, it turns out, the
rights of the other aren't worth a farthing.
And thus we make lists of books, prevent knowledge, ban speech, restrict assembly, deny the opportunity to learn and to know from all arabs in the
occupied territories. We, the jews, who have lived
through so many book burnings, so much cultural and
religious repression, we are the ones who restrict,
who confiscate books. And not only the political
writing. Literature. That which instills pride and the
image of a world rising up. For the first time in our
history, books have become our enemy, we, the
people of the book."23

inculcate non-Israeli jews with this martial spirit to "enable

them to be utilized in time of emergency." In a program
begun in 1981 by the jewish agency Immigration Department, young people studying in Israel receive military
training as part of a "whole new concept" to encourage
immigration. Remarked one such trainee, a "seminary"
student from Chicago, "The only way to understand Israel
is by feeling it, by understanding the necessity for the
army."28
Meanwhile, armchair joshuas desiring to share vicariously in the jewish state's military exploits can subscribe to
Military Enthusiast Magazine, advertised regularly in the
international edition of the Jerusalem Post, or, in what must

MILITARISM
The hostility engendered by Israel's refusal to recognize
the nationalist aspirations of Palestinian arabs and offer
restitution for wrongs done to them - as called for in UN
General Assembly Resolution 194(III}of Dec. 11, 1948 has resulted in an abiding sense of insecurity with its
consequent reliance on military preparedness. More disquieting, is evidence that what Israeli ex-patriot journalist
Maxim Ghilan has called the "prussianization" of Israel24is
regarded as normal, even desirable: a sort of cohesive
element binding together a society riven by inter-ethnic and
class enmities little known about or understood by outsiders." "The only thing that presently unites the jews of

Israel's obsession with military prowess to the traumatization of its Ashkenazi, or east European leaders, who

the crushing anguish of total helplessness which attended it.

new holocaust. A holocaust where jews should die not 'like

themselves away by minor gestures, the significance of
which escapes their conscience (sic). Such a gesture is the

With the neutralizing of the southern or Egyptian "front,"
there was increasing apprehension, subsequently justified,

In 1981, military spending amounted to 27% of the
country's GNP. Each year the government awards cash
prizes to individuals who have made a "technological
contribution to Israel's defense." In 1981 the Israel Defense

Between 1977 and 1979 the jewish state purchased from a
West Berlin manufacturer 1.6 tons of thiophosgene, an
illegally produced ingredient of poison gas.34 It is now
generally accepted by Western intelligence sources that
Israel possesses at least 20 Nagasaki-size nuclear bombs."

Writing in the Jan./Feb. issue of New Outlook, editor David

Shahan warned: "The government of Israel is now openly a
war-mongering government. It builds its plans on raising the
level of international tension to create opportunities for
expansion and annexation. It plays with fire. It should be
stopped before the small fires it lights turn into world
conflagration. "
ABETTING

OPPRESSION

Addressing Israel's Provisional Government in the autumn of 1948, David Ben-G urion, the future Prime Minister,
stated that "We have friends in the East and in the West. ...
we could not have conducted the war (of Independence)
without the important help we received from several states

"... This year, Israel will export over a billion dollars worth of military equipment to
antidemocratic, anticommunist regimes ... even to the antisemitic dictatorship in
Argentina - which raises doubts about thejewish state's professed concern about a
'worldwide resurgence' of antisemitism!"
Cognizant of its regional military superiority, Israel has
shown itself to be increasingly averse to any rapprochement
with its arab neighbors which might necessitate recognition
of the Palestinian arab right to self-determination or relinquishment of additional territory conquered in June 1967.
Even before returning the remainder of the Sinai to Egypt
on April 25, 1982, Israel undermined the spirit and terms of
the Camp David Agreements of 1978 by implanting additional jewish settlements in the occupied territories, declaring (July 1980) Jerusalem as Israel's "eternal capital,"
announcing (August 1981) its intent to eventually impose
Israeli sovereignty on the West Bank and Gaza, and
annexing the Golan Heights four months later. In addition,

of East and West. ... the interests of the jewish people are
not identical with those of any state or any bloc in the
world."38
Finding itself increasingly condemned by international
organizations and investigative bodies, as a result of its
attitude toward and treatment of, the Palestinian arabs,
Israel has drawn closer to the United States where, after all,
resides the wealthiest, most numerous and influential of the
Diaspora communities. Indeed, were it not for the several
billion dollars Israel receives annually from the US in official
aid, and additional hundreds of millions from tax-deductible
contributions to jewish philanthropic and zionist affiliated
organizations, the jewish state would have become insol-

vent long ago. Still, Israel has an external debt topping $18
billion - the highest per capita debt.for any country."
Bemoaning this economic dependency on the US, one
commentator in a militantly zionist New York weekly wrote
revealingly: "In 1932 Chaim Weizmann, the zionist leader,
noted that eastern European jews received one third of their
monies from jews in America. The difference between them
and now is the state of Israel."4o

In his essay, "Hebrew Humanism," the world-renowned
jewish philosopher Martin Buber (1878-1965), warned
against zionism's succumbing to an unreflecting will-topower. The zionist movement, he wrote, "must decide
either for national egoism or national humanism" - the
former of which "does not set the nation a true supernational task."46 In contrast, the pronouncements of past

"... Explains one religious fanatic, matter-of-factly: 'The law of the torah and talmud
is a higher moral and legal code than any Geneva convention or UN resolution.'"
Hence, while it is true Israel has made political and
military decisions antithetical to the wishes of the US, it
nevertheless remains that both countries share many
common perceptions of the international scene, particularly with regard to Soviet "expansionism" and revolutionary movements in the resource-rich Third World-' - both
of which could have a direct bearing on the standard of
living in the US and, by extension, in Israel. Consequently,
the jewish state is aggressively promoting the sale of
security enhancement technologies and military armament
(40% of its total exports) to repressive regimes in Africa,
Asia, and Latin America, where Israel frequently acts as a
surrogate for the US, which has mightily striven to depict
the Soviet Union as the world's arch violator of human
rights. In a remarkably forthright speech last year to an
Israeli business gathering, Yakov Meridor. chief economic
coordinator in Menahem Begin's cabinet, said:
"We are going to say to the Americans, don't
compete with us in Taiwan, don't compete with us in
South America, don't compete with us in the Caribbean or in other countries where you couldn't directly
do it. Let us do it."42
"The state of Israel," writes Dr. Israel Shahak, concentration camp survivor and Chairman of the Israeli League for
Human and CivilRights, "now fulfillstowards the oppressed
peasants of many countries - not only in the Middle East
but also far beyond it - a role not unlike that of the jews in
pre-1795 Poland: that of a bailiff to the imperial oppresSOr."43This year, Israel will export over a billion dollars
worth of military equipment to antidemocratic, anticommunist regimes like those in Honduras, Ecuador, Haiti,
Chile, El Salvador, Bolivia, Guatemala, and even to the
antisemitic dictatorship in Argentina= - which raises
doubts about the jewish state's professed concern about a
"worldwide resurgence" of antisemitism! After all, is it
reasonable to expect that unsophisticated peasants, raised
in deeply catholic tradition, shadowed by Arava aircraft and
sprayed by Uzi and Galil submachine gunfire, will, having
once learned the identity of the arms suppliers, draw a
distinction between zionist Israel and judaism?
To date, no one in the Israeli leadership has evinced any
discomfit at the irony that the state which was founded as a
refuge for one of humanity's most oppressed groups, has
itself turned into a foremost consultant on, purveyor of,
machinery for oppression. Defending his country's behavior, one unruffled representative of Israel's Foreign Ministry offered this rationalization: "Expecting Israel to be more
ethical than other nations is one way of expressing antisemitism."45
Page 30

and present Israeli leaders have all too often been characterized by a grating arrogance and frigid disregard for world
opinion. "We, as jews, do not owe anyone on earth
anything," says Defense Minister Ariel Sharon. "I think the
rest of the world owes us a lot. "47Expressive of this attitude
is the jewish state's flagrant violation of several articles of
the Fourth Geneva Convention (1949), directly applicable
to the Occupied Territories; its refusal to sign the nuclear
Non-proliferation Treaty (1968) or to permit inspection of
its own nuclear facilities (while arrogating to itself the right
to destroy those of states which have so complied); and
though it was a UN General Assembly resolution (273)
which bestowed on Israel international recognition as a
nation, its leaders have repeatedly ignored General Assembly, Security Council and Human Rights Commission resolutions concerning the Palestinian refugees, retention of the
Occupied Territories, erection of jewish settlements, the
expulsion of Palestinian leaders, altering the character and
status of Jerusalem, "collaboration" with the "racist regime" in South Africa, and the August 12 call to allow
deployment of UN observers in and around besieged West
Beirut. Explains one religious fanatic, matter-of-factly: "The
law of the torah and talmud is a higher moral and legal code
than any Geneva Convention or UN resolution."48
In a somber commentary in the Hebrew daily Ha'aretz on
March 19, 1982 - before the invasion of Lebanon and the
subsequent massacring, with Israeli complicity, of hundreds
of Palestinian refugees by Israel's Lebanese christian allies
in the Sabra and Chatilla camps - Knesset member
Amnon Rubinstein bewailed the prevalence of "blatantly
hawkish tendencies" among his country's "religious" and
"so-called left-wing youth," and the growing influence of a
"lunatic fringe" of "extremist and racist elements" led by
rabbis and academics:
"The growth of the lunatic fringe is only one sign of
many of the way Israel has lost its way and its moral
judgment. This writer has always doubted the apocalyptic warnings about the dangerous moods said to
threaten Israeli democracy with destruction, and I
have still not lost my belief in the ability of Israeli
society to regenerate itself and to become normal and
human again. Yet anyone looking at this country with
open eyes and without rose-tinted spectacles willsee a
grim truth. An illwind is blowing, against the direction
of the 'zionist vision,' against the character of 'humanistic judaism,' against all that we wanted Israel to
become."49

CELIBACY - IT'S ORIGIN

As you read the newspapers and as I read them, we find
that there is a constant problem in the roman catholic
church today about celibacy. Right now this has to do with
priests alone. With the Women's Liberation movement
worldwide today, I suspect that there will be a future
problem in respect to the celibacy of nuns. If you have an
enquiring mind, you too have wondered - where did this
idea of celibacy originate? Let's try to explore that now.

It is immediately apparent to any student of history that

the roman catholic church has the single most dominant
impact on civilization in the world in the entire history of
western man, partly because of the time of its inception and
partly because of the models used to penetrate the cultural
milieu by that church. The ideas of this church have met us
at every point in every age, in every sphere of human'
activity. Everything was and is now, covertly, permeated
with its influence. There has been a great brotherhood of
subjection of people to that influence in the last 1,650 years.
When we speak of celibacy we honestly must designate
what we mean. The dictionary definition is adequate, and I
quote from Webster's Collegiate Dictionary "abstention
from sexual intercourse." - only that and nothing more.
Since the continuation of the species is our basic reason for
living, and since the reproduction drive is a prime one in all
living things, we must see that the idea of celibacy is one of
subjugation of nature, subjugation of the natural and normal
drives of human beings. The "why" of this is what we need
Page 32

February, 1983

to explore.
When we turn to the old testament and the basics of
christianity, for that set of books is a part of the "christian
holy bible," we find that the first admonition of god to adam
and eve was to be fruitful and to multiply, and to replenish
the earth. The early Hebrews apparently had no idea of a
"future existence" and we see in the early writings a very
material religion. The Hebrew prophet threatened worldly
punishments, and promised fleshly rewards. There was no
incentive to sacrifice the pleasures of the world for those of
heaven, of which they apparently knew nothing. If we look
at some specific stories, they are curious in a certain way. In
judges 11:36-40 ("And she said unto him, 'My father, if thou
hast opened thy mouth unto the lord, do to me according to
that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as
the lord hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies,
even of the children of Ammon .... Let this thing be done for
me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down
upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my
fellows.' And he said, 'Go.' And he sent her away for two
months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed
her virginity upon the mountains. And it came to pass at the
end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who
did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and
she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel that the
daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of
jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.") we find the
recitation of a story which regards virginity as a disgrace.
This is repeated in the story of judah and tamar found in
genesis 38:6-26 ("And judah took a wife for er his firstborn,
whose name was tamar. And er, judah's firstborn, was
wicked in the sight of the lord; and the lord slew him. And
judah said unto onan, 'Go in unto thy brother's wife, and
marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.' And onan
knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass,
when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on
the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And
the thing which he did displeased the lord: wherefore he
slew him also. Then said judah to tamar his daughter-in-law,
'Remain a widow at thy father's house, tillshelah my son be
grown: ... lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren
did.' And tamar went and dwelt in her father's house. And in
process of time the daughter of shuahjudah's wife died; and
judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers
to Timnath, he and his friend hirah the Adullamite. And it
was told tamar, saying, 'Behold thy father-in-law goeth up to
Timnath to shear his sheep.' And she put her widow's
garments off from her, and covered her with a veil, and
wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the
way to Timnath; for she saw that shelah was grown, and she
was not given unto him to wife. When judah saw her, he
The American Atheist

thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her

face. And he turned unto her by the way, and said, 'Go to, I
pray thee, let me come in unto thee;' [for he knew not that
she was his daughter-in-law]. And she said, 'What wilt thou
give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?' And he said, 'I
willsend thee a kid from the flock.' And she said, 'Wilt thou
give me a pledge, till thou send it?' And he said, 'What
pledge shall I give thee?' And she said, 'Thy signet, and thy
bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand.' And he gave it
her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him. And
she arose, and went away, and laid by her veil from her, and
put on the garments of her widowhood. And judah sent the
kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his
pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not. Then
he asked the men of that place, saying, 'Where is the harlot,
that was openly by the way side?' And they said, 'There was
no harlot in this place.' And he returned to judah, and said, 'I
cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that
there was no harlot in this place.' And judah said, 'Let her
take it to her, lest we be shamed; behold, Isent this kid, and
thou hast not found her.' And it came to pass about three
months after, that it was told judah, saying, 'Tamar thy
daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and also, behold,
she is with child by whoredom.' And judah said, 'Bring her
forth, and let her be burnt.' When she was brought forth,
she sent to her father-in-law, saying, 'By the man whose
these are am I with child: ... Discern, I pray thee, whose are
these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.' And judah
acknowledged them, and said, 'She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to shelah my
son."'). In the old testament we see often that child bearing
is the noblest function of a woman and as we read of the
"begatting" it becomes clear how important it was for
descendants to be of a certain male. The entire lineages of
jesus christ in the new testament are to prove that he was of
the house of david. He was not so much the son of god and
the holy ghost as he was of that famous house - and I refer
you to matthew 1:1 - "The book of the generation of jesus
christ, the son of david, the son of abraham.' and luke
3:23-38 - "And jesus himself began to be about thirty years
of age, being (as was supposed) the son of joseph, which
wasthesonofheli, ... {39'sonof'slater)whichwastheson
of david ... (33 'son of's later) which was the son of adam,
which was the son of god."
Also, in the old Hebrew religion the hereditary aspects of
the priestly line are compelling. The levites were the priests.
The son of the rabbi was expected to be a rabbi. No special
sanctity attached to abstaining from reproduction or abstaining from sex.

The highest reward for obedience to god is noted in deut.

7:14 - "there shall not be male or female barren among
you." Actually, in the old testament, we find only allusions to
the idea of taking a nazarite vow, which is a refraining from
certain things for either a longer or shorter time. Cutting of
the hair is one of the things one could refrain from under this
vow. Not drinking wine during a certain period is another.
Most of the information about the nazarite vow is given in
numbers chapter 6. Nothing in it endorses celibacy.
You probably recall a little of the history of the jews but let
me give a thumbnail sketch here, for reasons which will
become apparent. About a thousand years before the
alleged birth of christ, some wandering tribes of Hebrews
under the leadership of Saul and of David gained dominaAustin, Texas

tion over palestine and formed the monarchy of Israel.

Under David's son, king Solomon, this monarch became
weakened and divided (on his death) into two independent
kingdoms. The one in the north consisted of ten tribes and
continued the name "Israel" although actually centered
about Samaria. The other tribes continued in the south
around Jerusalem and were known as Judah.
The two kingdoms tried to maintain an independent
existence while they struggled with the Philistines, the
Amalekites, The Moabites, the Ammonites and all those
other struggling nations of that era; and the two kingdoms
sat between Assyria and Egypt - a dangerous position. In
722 b.c. Samaria (Israel) was sacked by the Assyrians and
the inhabitants were carried away as prisoners. Their
identity as a people was lost and all that remained was the
legend of the "lost ten tribes." The smaller southern
kingdom of Judah became known as Israel. The word
"Israelite" came to be used then later, generically, to
indicate the descendants of the inhabitants of that area.
But, about 600 b.c. Babylon found that Israel was a
troublesome neighbor and invaded Jerusalem twice. In the
second invasion the walls of the city were wholly dernolished. Important buildings were levelled and a large number
of inhabitants were moved to Babylon in what is termed by
the jews as "the captivity." In that captivity attempts were
made to keep the religion pure.
Persia, in turn, conquered Babylon in 538 b.c., which is
about 60 odd years later ... and the jews were then released
from "captivity," and came into close relationship with the
Persians. The religion of the Persians was mazdeism. This
religion was so wholesome and practical in its character that
there was no hint of sexual suppression in it. The priesthood
was kept within certain families, the sacred lore was
transmitted from father to son. Again, the jews were not
influenced or coerced away from their religious ideas.
However, with the conquests of Alexander, judaism was
exposed to new influences and the most powerful of these
were the influences of India and the Greek empire. Beyond
the Indus, the sankhya philosophy was already venerable.
That philosophy taught the nothingness of life. The greatest
good was in the absolute victory of a person over all of his
human wants and desires. The philosophy had been
reduced into a system of religion by buddha. Gautama
buddha was born, we think, about the year 563 b.c. - or
about 25 years before the jews were released from their
"captivity" and came into relationship with the Persians. By
the time Alexander conquered Persia the religion was about
70 years old.
Buddha was the son of a king. He was financed by
another one. His converts were distinguished citizens, and
powerful ones. We willgo into a discussion of buddha in one
program also - but here we must note what he gave to the
jewish religion. Buddhism and the related religions of the
east, with all of their absurdities of belief and practice, did
spring from a profound conviction of the superiority of the
spiritual side of man's nature. If their theory of the
nothingness of mortal existence was exaggerated, they did
elevate the soul, whatever that was, at the expense of a
regard to the duties which man owes to himself, his family,
his society, and nature.
Buddha bound the professors of his system of religion to
chastity. This was a novel idea, and one to which the Semitic
races had not been privy. Another idea was creeping in also

February, 1983

Page 33

.. from Chaldean influences came the doctrine of a future

life and of future rewards and punishments. When these
two ideas met, they complemented one another. With the
idea of spiritual life - of immortality, the idea of subordinating the life here and now to the better life of the
hereafter and the future was a natural ally. The one idea
became a bolstering philosophy for the other.
Thejews had an "establishment" then in their religion as
we have one now in our nation. Every culture - everywhere - has "establishment" features. Human life is ever
the same. The aristocratic conservative party in power is
always the "establishment," and in the time of which Ispeak
here it was the sadducees. They believed in the traditionalist
jewish religion. The sopherim, or house of scribes, cornposed of religious teachers trained in all the learning of the
day, sprung from the people eager to maintain their
nationality against the temporizing policy of their rulers.
The jewish community was split: the sadducees were ready
to submit to some Hellenizing in order to continue to exist
and save as much as they could of their religion. The
chassidim, the democratic reformers, not ready for innovation, prepared to die in defence of their faith. The democratic reformers won. In their triumph they obtained control
not alone of the jewish state, but the development of the oral
law by the scribes, supplementing the torah or written law.
They engrafted permanently their doctrines upon the
ancestral belief. Life after death was there to stay and the
contempt for life and earthly things, including sex, was to
become a part of the religion. The name of "chassidim"
disappeared as that of the organizing party and in its place
opposing the sadducees we find two factions or sects. The
perushim, or separatists, who maintained an active warfare,
temporal and theological, with the sadducees came to be
known as the pharisees. The second faction, the essenes the mystics, withdrew from active life for the benefit of
spiritual growth and meditation.
The essenes cultivated the soil, often took vows of the
nazarite, used no artificial textures as clothing, used no food
save what was spontaneously produced. They practiced
daily ablutions. Property was held in common. There was
an abstenance from marriage. The essenes were respected
by people. They were highly regarded as prophets and as
having gifts of divination. Read the new testament and see
what jesus christ had to say about the pharisees and the
sadducees, (matt. 3:7 - "But when he saw many of the
pharisees and sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto
them, '0 generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee
from the wrath to come?'''; matt. 15:1-3 - "Then came to
jesus scribes and pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, ...
But he answered and said unto them, 'Why do ye also.
transgress the commandment of god by your tradition?''';
matt. 23:1-3,13-15,27 - "Then spakejesus to the multitude,
and to his disciples, saying, 'The scribes and pharisees sit in
moses' seat: Alltherefore whatsoever they bid you observe,
that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they
say, and do not. ...
But woe unto you, scribes and
pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven
against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer
ye them that are entering you. Woe unto you, scribes and
pharisees, hypocrites! for.ye devour widows' houses, and
for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive
the greater damnation. Woe unto you, scribes and pharisees, hypocrites! for you compass sea and land to make one

proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more

the child of hell than yourselves .... Woe unto you, scribes
and pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of
the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of
extortion and excess ....
Woe unto you, scribes and
pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are
within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.' ";
mark 8:15 - "And he charged them, saying, 'Take heed,
beware of the leaven of the pharisees, and of the leaven of
herod.'''; luke 11:42-44 - "But woe unto you, pharisees! for
ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over
judgment and the love of god: these ought ye to have done,
and not to leave the other undone. Woe unto you,
pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. Woe unto you,
scribes and pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves
which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not
aware of them.") and then note that he utters not one word
of condemnation of the essenes. Then, next, consider that
jesus christ's entire message was to call the attention of man
from the gross temptation of earth to the higher things
which should fit him for the inheritance of eternal life.
As we unravel the history of ideas, we see easily how it
was built, and why. This is the evolution of ideas - as
"scandalous" today as the theory of the evolution of plant
and animal life.
Next week we can go into the evolution of the idea of
celibacy in the christian roman catholic church, and see
where and how it became legitimatized. It is apparent that it
was not an original command of god from the old testament
forward. We can get back to buddha and the eastern ideas
later, let's follow this where it leads us in western culture, up
to the problem of priests and nuns today.

The American Atheist

A LITIGATION LESSON
by J. D. Vowles
(Printed in the GALA Review, August-September, 1982)
On 23 June (1982), a Federal District Judge, William B.
Enright, in San Diego, granted the government's motion to
dismiss the complaint which I had filed as an Atheist on the
31 March to invalidate Congress's use of religion as a basis
for income tax exemption eligibility, a petition for declaratory relief the introduction and summary of which was
reproduced in GALA Review for June-July. The court did
not pass on the merits of the case, the dismissal was without
prejudice but the reasons for denial of subject matter
jurisdiction are significant and might be appreciated by any
Atheist considering a challenge to the religious tax exemption under the Declaratory Judgment Act.
The complaint sought to invalidate those eligibilitycategories for income tax and income disclosure exemption
which derive their central core of meaning from the religion
clauses of the First Amendment and alleged violation of
neutrality, entanglement between church and state, and
infrigement of the right to challenge the truth and relevance
of religious faith. The Court found that it lacked subject
matter jurisdiction for two reasons, first, because the
remedy created under the Declaratory Judgment Act does
not apply to federal tax questions. (28 U.s. c. Section 2201)
and secondly, that the type of claim was barred by
sovereign immunity. Both of these require explanation.
The Declaratory Judgment Act of 1935 enabled plaintiffs
to obtain a declaration of their rights without having to
undergo prosecution in order to fulfill the constitutional
requirement for actual cases or controversies. Congress
specifically exempted tax questions in Section 2201 so that
the assessment and collection of taxes would not be
impeded, the plaintiffs in tax cases having a refund remedy
in the tax courts. In 1972, however, in the case of McGlotten
v. Connally, 338 F. Supp. 443, Chief Judge David Bazelon of
the US District Court for the District of Columbia allowed a
Black American to enjoin the Secretary of the Treasury
from granting tax-exempt status to fraternal organizations
with whites-only membership because the plaintiff, not
being a party to the tax liability, had no remedy in the tax
court and by seeking to invalidate a basis for exemption,
could only effect the collection of additional taxes. This
sensible reasoning was later followed by Judge June Green
of the same court in Tax Analysts and Advocates v.
Schultz, 376 F. Supp. 889 (1974). However, since the 9th
Circuit, i.e. California, has no cases affirming the District of
Columbia Court's interpretation of Section 2201, Judge
Enright felt himself bound by the literal language of the
statute and declined to follow the teaching of Judge
Bazelon. In practical terms, this means that if an Atheist
wishes to challenge the religious income tax exemption, he
must be prepared either to bring the action in the District of
Columbia or to appeal unfavorable 9th Circuit District
decisions, all the way to the Supreme Court where, even if
the highest tribunal should follow McGlotten, the case
would be remanded to the original district court only then to
Austin, Texas

begin a discussion of the merits. Translating this jurisdictional barrier into the dollars required to purchase legal
expertise in order to effect its removal is discouraging
indeed.
The second reason cited by the court for its lack of
subject matter jurisdiction concerned the bar of sovereign
immunity. If we are to believe James Madison and Hannah
Arendt, the point of the American Constitution was to
abolish the prerogatives associated in England with a
sovereign. But the American courts, on their own initiative
and since the mid-19th century, have been holding that the
United States cannot be sued without its consent. To
mitigate the injustice, Congress has enacted several statutes consenting to be sued in specific cases. The Federal
courts have also devised their own way around the bar by
permitting an officer of the United States to be sued in his
own name and then holding that the statute under which he
acts is unconstitutional. This legal fiction of an "officer's
suit" has proved anything but satisfactory and in 1969
leading authorities and the American Bar Association
proposed an amendment to the Administrative Procedure
Act virtually abolishing the defense of sovereign immunity in
actions seeking relief other than money. The amendment
failed in the Senate Judiciary Committee and the doctrine
still binds the Federal courts although one tribunal has
admitted that there is no rational basis for it, Kelly v.
Metropolitan County Board of Education, 372 F. Supp.
528.
.
My strategy for getting around the sovereign immunity
bar was to forego injunctive relief, arguing that a mere
declaration of constitutional infirmity in respect to the tax
exemption would in no way interfere with and even facilitate
the collection of taxes. My motive for avoiding the legal
fiction of an "officer's suit" was to render Congress clearly
responsible for the unconstitutional legislation it had enacted. If my name and address were to appear on public
record as a gay Atheist plaintiff, I wanted the author of the
religious establishment to be properly identified as the
national legislature. It was a wrinkle and Judge Enright
refused to go along. Had I named the Secretary of the
Treasury as the defendant, however, there is still no
assurance that the court would have found the sovereign
immunity bar inapplicable. Authorities point out that the
Supreme Court decisions on the doctrine are sufficiently
ambiguous that even resort to the legal fiction of an
"officer's suit" is no guarantee that the United States willnot
be found an indispensable party.
What is to be learned from the above? While the situation
may change in the future, given the present limited resources and manpower available to Atheists, other directions seem more promising than to litigate the religious
income tax and income disclosure exemption in Federal
court. Clearly the exemption is a violation of neutrality and
should be so denounced by Atheists as did GALA in the

February, 1983

Page 35

course of its first national convention last year in San

Francisco. Such are the obstacles to relief, however, that
where Chief Judge David Bazelon and the American Bar
Association have failed, a gay Atheist can hardly be
expected to succeed.
Does this suggest that Atheists should ignore the Federal
courts? Hardly. For there are other ways to take advantage
of these tribunals than hiring attorneys to help them out of
their self-generated difficulties. A beginning would be to
respond when judges invoke Atheist positions, interests,
and activities as justification for various establishments of
religion. An example was the case of United States v.
Seeger, 380 U.S. 163 (1965) where Mr. Justice Clark
allowed Congress to exempt clergy and religious pacifists
from compulsory military service by pointing out that:
"No party claims to be an Atheist or attacks the
statute on this ground .... We do not deal with or
intimate any decision on that situation in these cases.'
(at 174-175)
The Supreme Court knew full well that no self-respecting
Atheist would ever present himself as a candidate for
exemption under Section 6j of Universal Military Training
and Service Act designed for an individual: .
"... who by reason of religious training and belief is
conscientiously opposed to participation in war in any
form."
A more recent case is the Supreme Court ruling in Wa/z
v. Tax Commission of City of New York, 397 U.S. 664
(1970). Here Mr. Justice Harlan justified a provision of the
New York State Constitution permitting exemption from
taxation for property used "exclusively for religious purposes" by holding that:
"As long as the breadth of exemption includes groups
that pursue cultural, moral, or spiritual improvement
in multifarious secular ways, including, I would suppose, groups whose avowed tenets may be antitheo-

logical, atheistic, or agnostic,I can see no lack of

neutrality in extending the benefit of the exemption to
organized religious groups." (at 698)
The honorable justice was certainly aware that unbelievers
worthy of the name do not participate in the activities of
religious groups unless such activities lie totally outside the
purpose for which tax exemption is being granted. Efforts of
this kind by Federal judges to define Atheists out of
existence by ascribing to religious activities such breadth as
to include even the exertions of unbelievers should be
emphatically denounced and Ql(plicitlycondemned by Atheist organizations.
In conclusion, my unsuccessful efforts to sue Congress
over the religious eligibility category for income tax and
income disclosure exemption were at least instructive.
Perhaps the most important conclusion to be drawn from
the experience is that Atheists cannot expect a quick fix in
the Federal courts. There were a couple of decades after
Mr. Justice Jackson's opinion in West Virginia State Board
of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624, (1943), when the
Supreme Court took the Establishment Clause very seriously indeed. But it should be remembered that in those
days, the highest tribunal of the land was only putting down
entities such as the School Board of Abington Township in
Pennsylvania and the Superintendent of the Baltimore City
Schools. Even Madalyn Murray O'Hair's petition against
official school prayer was only accepted when joined with
similar complaints by members in good standing of the
unitarian church. Neither life tenure nor undiminished
compensation accorded to Federal judges under Article III
of the Constitution seems to ensure that they will stand up
to Congress in order to protect the rights of anyone so
unpopular as an Atheist. My experience suggests that
Atheists might be further ahead by complaining to the
media about the courts rather than getting mired down in
litigation the outcome of which is so problematical.

~~erelU5, the greatest challenge facing the earth is to prevent the occurrence of nuclear war

humanity's final war; and
~~erellS, a freeze followed by reductions in nuclear warheads, missiles, and other delivery systems

Resolved by the House of Representatives and the Senate of the United States of
America in Congress assembled,
(1) As an immediate strategic arms control objective, the United States and the Soviet Union should:
(a) pursue a complete halt to the nuclear arms race;
(b) decide when and how to achieve a mutual and verifiable freeze on the testing, production, and further
deployment of nuclear warheads, missiles, and other delivery systems; and
(c) give special attention to destabilizing weapons whose deployment would make such a freeze more
difficult to achieve.
(2) Proceeding from this freeze, the United States and the Soviet Union should pursue major, mutual, and
verifiable reductions in nuclear warheads, missiles, and other delivery systems, through annual percentages or equally
effective means, in a manner that enhances stability.

The Vernal Equinox this year is March 20th.

The christians stole this natural spring day of celebration, when days and nights are equal all over
the world, as the date of the "resurrection" of their mythological god. It is necessary for us to take back
this special day which belongs to all people everywhere on earth. You can help to teach everyone you
know that this is a special day in nature rather than a holy day of a god, by sending out these Vernal
Equinox cards to your friends.
