CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
INTRODUCTION
In

today's

increasingly

competitive

environment,

service

oriented

establishments are under the pressure of demonstrating that their services are
customer-focused and that continuous performance improvement is being
done. The higher education sector is not exempted from this reality. Students
nowadays have many options available to them because of the existence of so
many higher education institutions.
In the Philippines alone, there are 82 maritime schools offering BSMT
Program. To gain competitive edge over the other institutions, it is a challenge
for HEI's to look for marketing strategies that aim at improving quality, student
satisfaction and student retention. As a result, competition to woo as many
students as possible may become more and more intense. To make the matter
harder, as a private institution, it does not have the "privilege" to receive any
subsidies or financial assistance from the government (Teo, 2001).

In order to survive in this highly competitive market, quality and

satisfaction have long been recognized to play a crucial role. Considerable
studies have been done on these two concepts. According to the study done by
Alridge and Rowley (2001) an expectation that cannot be fulfilled on the
institution is the key factor for students' withdrawal. This would lead to the
premise that satisfaction with services may make the difference (Parasuman,
et. Al.1996). As per Seymour (1993), developing satisfied students should be a
primary goal of higher education institution. Developing student satisfaction at
university is a matter. If it is achieved, it will facilitate the strategic objectives of
the college more effectively. Student satisfaction plays a crucial role for the
success of an academic institution. As argued by Berry (1995), service is one of
the important factors enhancing value, and can positively influence a colleges
success. The student perception about satisfaction can act as an essential tool
to enhance the colleges service quality.
The present study will be an aid at giving importance on what are the
factor that influence the satisfaction of students in maritime education offered
in the campus. This study aims to examine the level of satisfaction among the
students of Mindanao Polytechnic College.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that contribute to
the satisfaction level on maritime education for Bachelor of Science in Marine
Transportation students studying in Mindanao Polytechnic College.
Specifically, this study was conducted to determine whether students are
satisfied in maritime education. Moreover, it sought the answers to the
following:
1. What is the perception of satisfaction on Maritime education of BSMT
students in MPC?
2. What is the level of satisfaction on Maritime Education of BSMT students
in MPC with the following variables?:
2.1.

Teaching Methods

2.2.

Instructional Resources

2.3.

School facilities

3. Is there a significant difference on the level of satisfaction on maritime

education between the following variables?
3.1.

Teaching methods

3.2.

Instructional resources

3.3.

School facilities

The goal of this study was to measure the satisfaction level on maritime
education delivered by Mindanao Polytechnic College to BSMT students. There
are 3 variables on maritime education which includes teaching methods,
instructional

resources

and

school

facilities.

These

variables

are

the

independent variables and the level of satisfaction is the dependent variable.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on the perception of student satisfaction towards
service quality on academic aspect delivered by the institution to its students.
The survey was conducted at Mindanao Polytechnic College where the

respondents are BSMT students, randomly participated by 1 st year to 3rd year

level cadets. The target group of this research was the BSMT students currently
studying at MPC.
This study does not represent the whole population of the students
studying in MPC. Thus, primary limitation is the scope and sample size.
The

research

was

conducted

among

the

students

in

Mindanao

Polytechnic College alone.

There may be other variables related to academic service quality which
were not included in this study.

Significance of the Study

The findings on this study will eventually help the students, parents,
administrators, faculty and staff as well as future researchers.
To the students. They will be able to know the mechanics of thesis writing
and moreover give them an idea of how is maritime education being given to
students.
To the parents. They will have the idea on what are the perception of students
on the academic service delivered by the institution and raise concerns that
will be beneficial to the institution.

To the MPC administrators. They will be able to see the areas of academic
service that they should improve and give focus. Also, it will help them look for
approaches that will enhance the student satisfaction on maritime education.
The findings of te study may create deeper awareness on the urgent need for
administrators to consider different factors that influence the level of
satisfaction on maritime education of BSMT students in MPC, General Santos
City.
To the MPC Faculty and Staff. They will be able to enhance their teaching
methods and strategies that will meet the expectations of the students and
come up with a better approach in instruction.
To the future researchers. They will have the pattern on how to do with thesis
and give them the primary tools for making research relevant to this study. The
results of this study will provide them knowledge about the strategies in
conducting a study similar to this research. This will serve as their referencein
making their research.
