LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
Are you settling into 2015?

Its hard to believe just one short month ago marked the start of a new year.
The holidays and their aftermath can be a chaotic whirlwind, paired with festive
parties and busy schedules. Its always an anticipated part of the year, but its easy
to get wrapped up in the frenzied nature of it all. January is a great time to reflect
on all that was, and all there is to come in the new year.
And then theres February: the calm after the storm. Its an interesting month,
and can be hard to characterize especially here in Wisconsin. It doesnt have
the same fresh, new quality as January, but we havent quite made it to early
spring and all that a new season brings. The bright snow has turned to slush, and
frigid temperatures are just beginning to warm up (sometimes!).
Settling into this month can feel comfortable in a positive way, but also, unfortunately, brings a sense of relaxation that has the potential to slow momentum
and drive toward recently formed New Years resolutions and goals.
The content in the following pages of Natures Pathways is fresh and new each
month, but like February, holds easy, comforting favorites that you can always
count on. Monthly staples like Healthy Kids, Healthy Pets, Herb Blurb and
Healthy Eating are among several articles that will provide new motivation and
the tools to continue the momentum that started 2015.
If one of your missions this year is to explore your spirituality, pay special
attention to Spiritual hunger, by Helen Borth. Are you working on self-healing and learning to forgive? Forgiveness then emotional closure, by Robert
Matuszak is the perfect read to get you started.
Maybe being conscious of your health is a new goal. Weve got you covered!
Amber Erickson, D.C., MEEBW, offers great insight into the benefits of chiropractic care for expectant mothers in, Chiropractic care during pregnancy. In
Want a love buzz? Kamala McCormick takes a different approach to health and
focuses on the hormone oxytocin and how it can affect you.
Were looking forward to really delving into 2015, and experiencing all February has to offer.

Battery needs

How to recognize
burnout and recharge!

By Carol Michalski, MSW, LCSW, Life Coach

What you think, you become. What you

feel, you attract. What you imagine, you
create.
Buddha

Then I realized that we do have such

warnings! The trouble is, we usually dont
pay attention to these early warning signs.
Burnout is a gradual process that occurs
over an extended period of time. It doesnt
happen overnight, but it can creep up on
you if youre not paying attention to the
warning signals. The signs and symptoms
of burnout are subtle at first, but they get
worse and worse as time goes on.
Think of the early symptoms of burnout

he other day I heard one of my

devices chirping battery needs
recharging. It got me thinking that
it sure would be great if we had a warning
system like that! It would make it easy
to recognize that we are running on low
batteries and in danger of burning out!

as warning signs that something is wrong

and needs to be addressed. If you pay
attention to these early warning signs, you
can prevent a major meltdown!
Check out these early signs that your
battery needs recharging:
Sense of failure and self-doubt
Feeling helpless, trapped and defeated
A sense of detachment, feeling disconnected from what is going on around you
Loss of motivation
Increasingly cynical and negative
outlook
Decreased satisfaction and sense of
accomplishment
Withdrawing from responsibilities
Isolating yourself from others
Procrastinating, taking longer to get
things done
Using food, drugs or alcohol to cope
Taking out your frustrations on others
Skipping work or coming in late and
leaving early
If you are experiencing any of the above
warning signs, how can you recharge your
battery? Although not quite as easy as plugging
into a charger, there are steps you can take!

Commit to a healthier lifestyle

Although this idea sounds like the same

old advice, eating the nutrients our bodies
and brains need to function well is vital. If
we are not putting in the right fuel, how
can we expect to feel our best? The same
holds true for getting enough exercise and
exposure to the outdoors.

Give from the

heart to local
pet
charities

By Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, CVA

ational pet charities tug at your heart strings with

dramatic pictures of tortured pets and sad music. We all
feel that we can never do enough to help so many with
desperate needs. As winter boredom sets in, consider donating
your time and skills to help local pets in need and feel the direct
impact of your efforts.
There are many worthy local organizations who struggle, with
little time and funds, to help as many pets as they can. A local
umbrella organization has been developed to help you connect
with them. Integrating People for Animal Wellness (iPAW) is a
nonprofit 501(c)(3) whose sole initiative is to decrease the unwarranted euthanasia of pets with special needs. Through education
and fundraising, pet welfare activists hope to create awareness
that there are many resources available to prevent and manage pet
disorders that lead to premature euthanasia.

If you love dogs, cats, horses

or any other animal, there is
a place for you in iPAW!

Please visit www.iPAWaid.com to see

iPAW has placed or sheltered

dogs and cats who have been
physically or emotionally
damaged to the extent
that they are considered
unadoptable by conventional
shelters or humane societies.
Thousands of pets lose their homes and their lives due to behavioral problems. Many more are euthanized due to illnesses that are
difficult or costly to manage. Just as humans need extra love and
understanding when afflicted with chronic disorders, so do pets.
iPAW has placed or sheltered dogs and cats who have been
physically or emotionally damaged to the extent that they are
considered unadoptable by conventional shelters or humane societies. Other local no-kill shelters or rescue/foster organizations
have been shouldering the burden of pets who do not fit into the
mainstream humane society adopt a normal pet template.
Pet lovers have big hearts. Many know the satisfaction of rescuing an aggressive dog, investing in a wellness work-up and finding
www.naturespathways.com

out that the aggression can be cured by treating an underlying,

formerly undiagnosed, hypothyroid condition. Some brave and
patient cat lovers will adopt a cat with a history of inappropriate urination, realizing that a new environment can make all the
difference in the world to an anxious cat. Some guardians who
choose to adopt a misfit are not so fortunate. These pet guardians are literally saints who spend thousands of dollars trying to
manage difficult issues for their new furry family member. When
their funds are exhausted, iPAW is an organization which hopes
to be there for them.
iPAW helped a tapped-out foster mom secure surgical care
for a kitten she rescued. Pierre had a cleft palate. When he ate,
food came out of his nose. Surgical repair was expensive. iPAW
connected Pierres foster mom with a surgeon to help fund Pierres
repair. He can eat normally now!
So many humans, dogs and even cats are developing arthritis,
even at a fairly young age. Most arthritic changes are now believed
to be immune disorders. iPAW seeks to provide organizations with
speakers who can teach pet guardians how to care for their pets better
to prevent this common, chronic disorder. Carnivores need to eat a
species-appropriate fresh diet and their immune systems should not
be overburdened with excessive vaccinations. If a body is afflicted
with arthritis, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications only
suppress the inflammation and in the long run continue to cause
cartilage damage. Pet parents need to know that modalities which
provide nutrients to stimulate cartilage regeneration, enhance lubrication and manage pain in a healthy way are preferable.

Acupuncture, veterinary spinal manipulative therapy, massage

and essential oils are all modalities that can have a huge impact
on quality of life, but are underused by the mainstream veterinary community. Many pets are euthanized without the benefit of
trying these safe and effective approaches.
iPAW volunteers can assist in veterinary clinics, in foster
homes, as consultants and as fundraisers. Organizations like
iPAW desperately need administrative volunteers, graphic designers and organizers.
Donations are always needed and appreciated! iPAW hopes to
partner with and provide grants to smaller rescue/foster organizations who do not have official nonprofit status. If you are a petlover and can see yourself supporting the Integration of People
for Animal Wellness by giving of your time, skills or funds, then
iPAW wants to hear from you! If you are a pet foster parent, iPAW
would like to hear from you as well!
Lets join together in southeastern Wisconsin to end unwarranted euthanasia and improve the quality and longevity of life
for dogs and cats. There are many desperate fur babies who will
benefit from your heartfelt concern and gifts.

Want a
love
buzz?

By Kamala McCormick

xytocin, the love hormone, is also

known as the altruistic hormone that
is present in whatever facet of love one
considers. Oxytocin is the most talked about
hormone, the hormone of love, and is released during sexual
activity, orgasm, birth and breastfeeding.
Oxytocin is made deep inside the brain in the hypothalamus.
It is stored in the posterior section of the pituitary gland of the
endocrine system. Oxytocin is released in pulses, never in isolation but rather as a cocktail of a complex balance of magnificent
hormones. It is a necessary hormone in reproduction and it influences the ejection reflexes: the sperm ejection reflex with male
orgasm, the sperm introjection reflex with female orgasm, and the

fetus ejection reflex at birth, a term created by Michel Odent for
the powerful and productive contractions at the end of an undisturbed labor which birth the baby quickly and easily. The placenta
ejection reflex and the milk ejection or letdown reflex in breastfeeding are also influenced by the hormone oxytocin.
Oxytocin promotes a desirable feeling of peace, calm and
connection a desire that leaves us wanting more: a need for
the feeling again and again. Oxytocin is found in both humans
and animals. Studies show that in humans it influences social
interaction behavior and social information processing. Exciting
research now explains oxytocin is related to ones ability to trust
and their feelings of trustworthiness.
www.naturespathways.com

The presence of oxytocin also promotes empathy. Empathy

allows us to feel the feelings of others to understand another
persons state of mind. Empathy motivates us to act if others are in
need. Studies conducted in 2009 found participants who showed
more empathetic care and concern toward others in emotional
situations had higher levels of oxytocin.
During pregnancy, high oxytocin levels are secreted with an
important purpose, to care for the mother. Oxytocin works to
enhance nutrient absorption, reduce stress and conserve energy
by making the mother sleepier, according to a 1996 study.
High maternal oxytocin levels during labor and birth also serve
to benefit the baby. Research has shown that maternal oxytocin
crosses the placenta and enters the babys brain during labor. Its
purpose is to protect brain cells by switching them off, according
to a 2006 study. The benefit: It reduces the amount of oxygen that
the babys brain requires during this time when contractions can
reduce blood and oxygen supply.
Natural rhythms for release of oxytocin are interfered with by
scheduled births or those that are highly managed. Undisturbed
birth is exceedingly rare in our culture, yet it is paramount for the
natural release of oxytocin.
The baby also produces oxytocin during labor. Mother and
baby are perfectly designed to work together in the birthing
process, a 1989 study concluded. In the minutes that follow birth,
both mother and baby are influenced by an intoxicating flow of
calm and connection. Ongoing newborn oxytocin production is
enhanced by skin-to-skin and eye-to-eye contact. Levels are also

increased during and after breastfeeding, according to the book

The Oxytocin Factor. All serve as early, instinctual and natural
methods for building trust.
In addition to its role in reproduction, oxytocin is secreted in
other situations of love and altruism, peacefully preparing a meal,
sharing a meal, humanitarian work, a touch or holding hands. Are
you ready for a love buzz?

Plank:

By Hope Zvara

ore work done flat on your

where 360 degrees of your
core can be accessed is in. Plank is
the new situp: an empowering position where all your core can be
accessed and utilized. Its a position in which gravity and your own
bodyweight can be a practitioners best friend. Instead of cranking on
your neck and upper back, Plank can teach you how to hold up your
own bodyweight by using your core and working from the inside out.
Plank is a challenging pose, but for many, for the wrong reasons. As
a fitness professional, I often hear things like: My wrists hurt, My
lower back aches or I cant hold this very long. Sometimes, some of
the variations of Plank are questionable if even effective mainly
because students often lack the true understanding of how to use
their bodies in a pose like Plank to build strength and effectiveness.

To improve your Plank pose, consider a deeper understanding of

your core region. For starters, work to locate and get comfortable
contracting your pelvic floor. Everything feeds into the pelvic floor
and the rectus abdominus muscle is not exempt. Working with your
exhales and toning the pelvic floor like its being pulled up toward
the base of the head is a great image to keep while holding Plank.
As you get more comfortable with a deep pelvic floor contraction, focus on the deep transversus wrapping around the torso and
the rectus abdominus muscle that covers your front belly. These
two large core muscles work to support the torso and body in a
pose like Plank and when contracted properly, help more evenly
distribute the weight of the rest of the body more evenly for less
wrist and lower back pain.

How to do Plank

Begin in Table Top.

Check that your hands are under your shoulders, with eyes of

your elbows (the center crease of the inside elbow) and fingers
forward, spread wide.

14

Natures Pathways | February 2015

Before stepping back into Plank, activate the deep muscles

of your pelvic floor, feeling as though they are being drawn

internally toward the crown of your head.
Exhale. Step back one foot at a time, without moving or shifting your body backward or shifting your hips upward.
Coming off the knees, align your body into one long line.
Keeping your neck long, let your eye line drop to the floor
between your hands.
Exhaling, actively press your quadriceps upward into your
hamstrings while engaging your inner thighs. Activate your
abdominals toward your spine against gravity. Finally, allow
your tailbone to drop slightly (due to the strength of your
core), not turn up.
Inhale. Press up through your arms and down through every
finger and your palms so you push out at the shoulder and
broaden your upper back. Avoid winging in the scapula and
over rounding in the mid-spine.
Extend from the heels of your feet to the crown of your head.
Hold this pose for five breaths to one minute.
Exhale. Release to your knees and drop back to your heels.
No matter where you are starting from, Plank is a powerful corestrengthening pose and one that can and should be incorporated
into everyones fitness routine.

Awakened
soul and the
birth
of
love

By Rich Hanhardt

his is the third installment of a series of discussions on

emotional healing through transformation of the triad of
humanness described typically as mind, body and spirit or
soul (I use soul and spirit interchangeably).
When we are on a healing path or living
Mind
a transforming life, we first seek to achieve a
balance between mind, body and soul. This
self
requires that we maximize the resources
available to us to achieve the highest level of
Soul
Body
functioning possible in each area, and then,
almost without effort, we will experience
the emergence of balance, flow and effortless movement between the
three. We also usually find some happiness in this state of balance.
Carl G. Jung called this balance the emergence of self (small s).
However, if we are struggling with unresolved emotional
wounds, we will still be left with pain and suffering in our lives.
What is required is transformation of these states to a higher level
a level requiring spiritual wholeness. Here is a description of
these advanced and healed states:
Natural
When we bring these advanced levels
Mind
into balance we will have achieved the
highest possibilities for a human life.
Self
And, perhaps most importantly for
Aware
Awakened
Soul
many of us, we will experience healing Body
from any emotional wounds we are still
carrying from the past. Jung named this
advanced state Self (capital S) and suggested Jesus life as the ultimate example. However, many other great spiritual leaders have
lived the lives of ultimate spiritual emergence or Self. Additionally
there are many hundreds, maybe many thousands, living these lives
throughout history. Many are alive now. We call them saints in the
Christian church and they are called Boddhisatvas in the Buddhist
tradition. (The Buddhists have a special belief about these people,
which states they have achieved nirvana but elect to be born again
to help others in an extraordinary compassionate act.) There are
also many thousands of these remarkable people now living quiet
www.naturespathways.com

and unpretentious lives. They can always be discovered; they will be

loving and giving to others.
The healed life of a person who has achieved Self is available to
us all, there are no exclusions or barriers. With the proper guidance and the desire to look inward, there are now paths to achieve
each of the advanced spiritual states of natural mind, aware body,
and awakened spirit for all. This is a major new cultural achievement. Today many more are seeking this life. There follows a
worldwide shift in consciousness, which we are the first to witness.
As we accept this new invitation to maximize our potential
and heal, we will experience exciting personal events. New stories
will be written. New levels of awareness will occur and suddenly
many secrets of the spirit will be understood for the first time.
We will know ourselves better and our role on the planet will be
made clear. We will feel healthy physically. A new appreciation for
the spirituality emerging in us, and a new respect for the faiths
of others will appear. And, when we have finally achieved this
balance, we will know because a new and genuine compassion
surfaces for the pain and suffering of others. We will find others
are becoming attracted to us and we will have become very loveable, because now we truly know how to love others!
So now, as this series on transformation is completed, we have
come full circle, and the circle ends where it begins with love.
We can now access this level of healing, but often it will require a
spiritual guide. If we have suffered from love withdrawn, perhaps
when we needed it the most, but have followed this healing
pathway, we will have reached the clearing in the forest. This is
the clearing with the spring of healing and living waters promised
us by Jesus at the well, and Siddhartha at the river, and Jeremiah
writing of the End of Times, in the vision quests of young Native
Americans, and in countless other faith experiences.
Richard Hanhardt M.S., MBA, BCSLC, is the executive director
of The Sacred Bond Center. He has practiced in the psychotherapy field for 44 years and now has dedicated his work to what he
believes is truly healing: awakening the spiritual for clients through
multiple pathways. He is the author of Sacred Bond and Living
Waters, Healing Through Meditative Prayer. See ad on page 17.

Signs, signs,
everywhere
signs

By Kim Hall

ver notice that certain numbers

show up around you a lot? Ever
wonder why someone calls you out
of the blue? Ever wonder why sometimes
an answer to a question shows up in a
random way like on a billboard?
Every day the universe is speaking to us
through signs. They can come in the form of
a literal sign on the road, a song playing on
the radio, a cloud shaped like a heart in the
sky, the time on a clock or simply in the form
of another person all of it means something. Signs can be ordinary everyday occurrences, or extraordinary and appear through
something better than we can imagine.
Remember or ever heard of the movie
Oh, God! with George Burns and John
Denver? You see, George Burns and his
wife Gracie believed God was always
speaking. When I started to pay attention,
it became very evident there are answers
everywhere, and more come when I ask.
Do you ever look up when you are at the
end of your rope and say, I give up! and
then suddenly a door opens to help you
complete what you gave up on? Its when
we give up control to the universe, that
it can divinely orchestrate a solution in a
better way. When faith, trust and truth are

The silence and a prayer asking

Show me what I can do or
Guide me to my next best step,
can manifest good things.
present, answers show up.
There are seven ways signs can show up
for all of us:
1. WHAT WE SEE: There was a time I was

in Tennessee and my motorcycle had tipped

on gravel and no one was around. I turned
around and looked up and said, Can you
please send someone to help me? To my
amazement, when I turned around there
was a truck that I had not seen before.
2. PLAY: One of our highest vibrations is

play. When we play and live in joy it brings

better things to us. Suddenly an answer
comes to us because our mind is free.
3. PRAYER: So much stimulation can be

around us that sometimes its best to allow

some quiet peace time. The silence and a
prayer asking Show me what I can do or

Guide me to my next best step, can manifest good things. The key is being truthful,
believing its possible to get an answer and
paying attention to receive it.
4. WISDOM: There was a movie and

books called Conversations with God, by

Neale Donald Walsh from Milwaukee. He
got his signs through words of wisdom he
channeled from above. We can call on the
wisdom of our elders and those who have
walked before us to guide us.
5. WHAT WE HEAR: Answers sometimes

simply come by overhearing a conversation

or when a friend randomly brings up a story
at the perfect time. Sometimes while we
are thinking about something, a bird sings
outside, a siren goes off, or the perfect song
with the perfect words comes on. These
subtle responses can sign-ify the answer.
www.naturespathways.com

6. NATURE: Nature provides so many

answers in the form of animals, birds,

trees, sun, clouds, stars and more. There
was a streak of speeding tickets I kept
getting. A friend asked whether by chance
a bird swooped in front of the car before
I got pulled over. I remembered that one
did. Today as soon as a bird or animal
crosses my path I remember to pay closer
attention to my speed; 99 percent of the
time theres a cop up ahead.

7. WITHIN OUR HEARTS: Sometimes

by simply listening to the heart within we

discover the answers are always there. We
have a higher heart we can tap into that is
bigger and better than our brain. Einstein
said that our heart is our sacred gift and
the mind its faithful servant; why is it that
society relies on the faithful servant over
our sacred gift? It took years for that one to
sink in and for me to really understand. Our
heart always guides us in a good direction
when we pay attention to what we feel.
The key to recognizing signs is asking
the question and paying attention for the
answer to show up. The fun part is staying
in the question, having zero attachment to
the outcome and letting the universe show
us the how to.

While its true that such sun-to-energy companies as Solar

Trust of America, Solyndra, Abound Solar, Fisker Automotive,
Record Hill Wind, Solo Power and Abengoa Solar cost tax payers
and private equity investors billions of dollars, I am sure that
each one of these enterprises had a polished business plan with
an outstanding vision, mission and objectives, plus all the right
images. However, they failed miserably at being good stewards of
investors money.
Why did this madness happen, and why has it repeated itself
throughout the years? Well, its actually a fascinating story.
It evolved as a result of British economist John Maynard Keynes
(June 5, 1883 - April 22, 1946), who had theories that fundamentally changed the views of macroeconomics over the past century.
He studied economic cycles and argued that demand for goods
and services determined the overall level of economic activity. A
slowdown in overall demand could lead to prolonged periods of
high unemployment.
According to Keynes, the government should intervene
to smooth out the ups and downs in the economy. As a result,
Europe and the United States came up with the revolutionary
idea of imposing income tax to fund these activities. The United
States added the 16th Amendment to the Constitution on February 3, 1913; this new amendment allowed Congress to impose a
tax on the income of individuals and corporations. Such collected
taxes help the government stimulate the economy and take on job
creating projects in bad times.
One early monument to the implementation of Keynesian
economics is the Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam,
which is a huge concrete arch dam in the Black Canyon of the
Colorado River, on the border between Arizona and Nevada. It
was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935 by President
www.naturespathways.com

Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive

effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred
lives. The dam was a hydroelectric stimulus project (as well as
what we might deem today a green energy project), one of many
that provided jobs and put money in peoples pockets, and ultimately helped end the Great Depression.
Another side effect of Keynesian economics is our consumption-driven economy, which in fact is fueled by debt. Today, the
government helps leverage private equity investments in sustainable business ideas through different government programs (loans
or grants), such as the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund, the Department of Energy (DOE), or the
Small Business Administration (SBA). Sometimes these government enterprises invest in technology that is not commercially
viable without tax breaks and/or subsidies, and in my opinion,
that is typically a bad idea.
Closer to home, an urban farming organization that raised
fish and grew hydroponic produce for local Milwaukee restaurants received a loan from the city in 2011 on the basis of its job
creation, training and sustainable business plan. However, the
firm was unable to raise needed private investments or bring in
needed revenue, and ceased production in 2013. Ultimately, city
taxpayers paid for any jobs the business had created, as well as the
defaulted loan.
From my perspective, it is indeed possible to be green and
fiscally irresponsible; however, that doesnt imply that investing
in alcohol, tobacco and firearms is a good polar opposite. In my

mind, investing in such sin stocks is even more irresponsible,

because it also destroys the moral fabric that makes us human.
There are many good firms that are worthy of our investments,
such as Ford, Google, Toyota, Microsoft, Starbucks, IKEA, Whole
Foods or Green Mountain, which are included in Fortune magazines list of 50 best global green brands. More and more companies are looking at social purpose and corporate citizenship as
part of their core offering, says Jez Frampton, the Global CEO
of Interbrand, an international brand consultancy. Why? It helps
drive purchases.
Please see Calverts Social Index for a complete list of socially
responsible investments www.calvert.com/calvert-social-index.
html. Even skeptical investors would agree that these firms are
worthy of including in your investment portfolio.
I dont feel good about losing money. Nor most likely do
you. I believe in investing your values in sustainable businesses
(green businesses) that make good money, help build communities and help you reach your investment goals. As always, ask
your financial advisor to learn if sustainable investing is a good
fit for you.

A paradigm
shift in
health care
Traditional medicine
remains key to living well

By Michael Richards

here is an emergence stirring up the old ways of normalcy.

From our gray Midwestern skies to the mountain and
plains of Colorado and the mammoth structures of Beijing
and Chengdu is a common tongue, a global recognition of our
ascent one not limited by the parameters of this universe but
by thought alone. At the fingertips of humankind is a collective
understanding of every ailment thats come in contact with the
cultures of this world.
Gone is the era of prolonged inaction. These days a woman
sneezes in the Southern Hemisphere and someone readies their
handkerchief in the North. Sure, in the developed countries
of Earth weve all but banished the infectious diseases affecting
5 million of the rest of humanity every year; but they wont be
leaving our collective memory anytime soon. We are fearful of
those dark days before the flame of proper hygiene lit our path.
And still, we in the developed world are up against a plague of
unknowns that come with experiencing a lifestyle unprecedented
in this fresh millennium. Lets call this the era of growing pains.
Whatever your cup of tea, stress has likely left the traces of a
beverage over-steeped. We are in the midst of an epidemic thats
swept away millions. Ours is a disease of the mind brought on by
a misunderstanding of our dietary needs and the inappropriate
workings of decades-long advertisements selling us a health care
plan thats only skin deep. Its become commonplace for us to fret
over the smallest of imperfections with our image and reach for
the nearest remedy, often a quick, fleeting fix.
A good life is a life well-lived. Being creatures of habit, we
become the product of our routine. The internet is swelling with
every failure and eureka moment in remembered human history
and wed be daft not to make note of a few of them. As more
cultures develop online data storage applications, our knowledge
of one another continues to grow. The potential to better our
20

Natures Pathways | February 2015

health and habits of happiness grows with the passing of each day.
The marriage of Eastern and Western sciences is already well
underway. Oriental medicine started gaining steam in the Western
world in the 1960s, with Americas first colleges of Oriental medicine appearing in the 70s.
The Chinese were practicing medicine with a complex understanding well before the introduction of the written word. Its
literally the stuff of legends. There is much debate over when and
where writing first showed up in humanitys toolbox, but its somewhere between 3200 and 1200 B.C. Modern medical practices did
not simply rise from the ashes of time, but are indebted to generations of Homo sapiens and the like. From the hunter-gatherers
of Africa and beyond; every crawl and small step forward was a
necessary, incremental journey leading our species to the stars.
We must remember that health care is not the final step in
healing the human vessel. It is the very process of living well. Your
medicine is in waking up well-rested. Its in the food that fuels you
and the company you keep.
Change is forever upon us, and it shouldnt take the flipping of
our calendars to breathe new life. Cheers to the real you, to the
real us and, as always: to your health.

Stress in
your life
The barrier to happiness

tress! We read about it, hear about it, complain about it, and
are constantly surrounded by it. It permeates every area
of our life, regardless of age, background, socioeconomic
status or gender.
Stress occurs when the pressures upon us exceed our threshold to cope with those pressures. Stress is the result of how your
mind and body react when confronted with demanding situations. Stress may result from anything that interferes with the
smooth and efficient operation of your cells, and throws you out
of balance. The event that triggers this reaction may be termed a
stressor. Its a fact of life that you are continuously encountering
such stressors, some of which you may not even be aware of.
Everyone has his individual way of expressing stress. Im sure each
and every one of you has experienced its bad effects: the knotted
stomach, headaches, increased heartbeat, sweaty palms, nervous
habits, insomnia, anxiety, impatience, anger, irritability, lack of
energy these are just a few symptoms many of you have accepted
as essential elements simply for getting through the day. Symptoms
fall into three categories: emotional, physical and behavioral.

PSYCHOSOCIAL: Relationship problems; interpersonal friction

with co-workers, friends and family members; economic dislocations; feelings of helplessness in the face of national and international
events; increasing rates of change in technological innovations
Maintaining a balanced mind and body is the key to good health
and happiness. You must be able to recognize the many forms of
stress that affect you, and learn how to cope with them.
Dr. Joanne Flanagan is a world-renown expert in stress analysis
and reduction of stress. She wrote the book, Secrets of Revitalization, and numerous articles for national magazines on stress,
nutrition, exercise, sleep and electromagnetic pollution (radiation).
She is the president and founder of SuperBodies, Inc., an institute
that researches the nature of hidden stressors that destroy vitality and cause health
problems. Her research led her to design and trademark the Equilibrex pendant,
which balances the body and protects one from electromagnetic radiation. This
research can be seen on her website, www.equilibrex.com. See ad on page 52.

What causes stress?

Stress emanates from both external and internal factors. The

major causes of stress can be divided these into four broad areas:
PHYSICAL: Noise, air and water quality, chemical pollution,

illness, bodily injury

SOCIAL: Poverty, unemployment, discrimination, monotony, life

changes, holidays

PSYCHOLOGICAL: Anxiety, depression, guilt, worry, religion,

What is the
right age
for
braces?

ental braces have been used for decades to correct various

alignment and spacing issues in the teeth. Braces can
be crucial to the future of ones oral health and prevent
serious issues down the line.
Roughly 25 percent of the people in North America who get
braces are adults. But braces still are geared toward young people
and getting them on the road to straight and properly aligned teeth
early on.
Braces correct a number of problems, including realigning the
jaw and alleviating overcrowding of teeth. Crooked teeth can
trap food and debris between them, making it harder to floss and
brush. Wearing braces also corrects the bite. If teeth or jaws are not
aligned correctly, it can lead to difficulty chewing food or create
jaw muscle pain. Braces also may boost self-confidence because
they can remedy appearance issues that may prove embarrassing.
Parents eager to get their children on the road to straighter teeth
may wonder when is the right time to get their kids braces. Many

kids are getting braces earlier and earlier, but when to get braces
typically depends on the child and the shape of his or her teeth.
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that
children see an orthodontist for an evaluation by age seven. The best
time for braces will be when the orthodontist and parents collectively decide its time to correct the misalignment of a childs teeth.
Some orthodontists prefer a two-stage approach to orthodontic treatment. They may use a dental appliance or a preliminary
amount of braces to begin moving the teeth while a child still has
most of his primary teeth. The second stage begins when all the
permanent teeth are in. The thought is to shorten the overall duration of treatment.
Other orthodontists follow the traditional approach of putting
on braces once all the primary teeth have fallen out. This occurs
between ages nine and 14. This is often a less expensive approach
because braces need only be applied and removed once.
A number of studies have shown that, for common problems
alleviated with orthodontic work, youngsters are better off waiting
until all of their permanent teeth have come in. Antonio Secchi, a
professor of orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, notes
that if parents choose to treat crooked teeth too early, the child may
need another phase of intervention a few years down the road.
Some problems, like crossbites, overbites or severe overcrowding, warrant early intervention. Scheduling an orthodontic visit
early on means children can get the care they need when they
need it. The orthodontist will be able to monitor how teeth are
growing in and map out the best treatment plan for all.
Braces can help fix an imperfect smile and alleviate oral health
concerns. Parents should speak to a dentist or make an appointment
with an orthodontist to evaluate their childrens treatment needs.

Chiropractic
care during
pregnancy

By Amber Erickson, D.C., MEEBW

ow back pain and pregnancy often seem to go hand in

hand, so chiropractic care can seem to be the logical choice
to alleviate that pain. Many people are surprised to learn of
the other benefits found from seeing a chiropractor when you are
expecting a child. Chiropractors are well-trained to assist pregnant women with many of the aspects of prenatal care, and to help
to ensure the smoothest and healthiest birth possible.
There is a large accumulation of anecdotal evidence that chiropractic care can provide many benefits both to the pregnant mother
and to the developing fetus. The average mother will gain around
30 pounds with each pregnancy, and this extra weight can place
a tremendous strain on low back joints, as well as on abdominal
muscling. There are also very real stresses placed upon an expectant mothers body, ranging from hormone changes to gastrointestinal upset. More than half of all expectant mothers will experience
some low back or neck pain while pregnant, and headaches are not
uncommon. This is especially true during the large fetal growth
phase in the third trimester of pregnancy, and this is often when
sciatic nerve irritation can become very uncomfortable.
The benefits of chiropractic care while pregnant are numerous.
Chiropractic care has proven to be very safe both for the expectant
mother, and for the baby. There are very few medications which
have been proven to be safe to take during pregnancy so chiropractic care can be a much safer alternative to managing back
pain while expecting. Chiropractic care can be useful to control
nausea, relieve joint pain associated with advancing pregnancy,
prevent a potential cesarean delivery, and reduce labor and delivery time. An expectant mother will benefit from a balanced pelvis,
which will provide a growing baby ample room to grow. Intrauterine restraint may also prevent the fetus from moving into the best
possible prebirth position, and this may restrict the mother from
a natural, noninvasive birth. Pregnancy will change the mothers
center of gravity almost immediately, and so this will increase the
www.naturespathways.com

stress placed on the sacroiliac joints in her low back. Pregnancy

hormones can compound this low back pain when they begin
to loosen ligaments in preparation for birth. Chiropractically
balancing the pelvis can help to lessen some of this strain.
Chiropractic care can also be very useful in the case of a breech
fetus. Larry Webster, D.C., founded a well-known chiropractic technique for chiropractic analysis and treatment for babies who present
in breech position called the Webster technique. This technique is a
well-known, effective, safe and gentle method that includes balancing the pregnant mothers pelvis with a chiropractic adjustment to
reduce tension on her uterine ligaments and uterus. This balanced
pelvis then allows the fetus to position itself optimally.
Safe exercise during pregnancy is highly recommended for
most healthy women, and can be very useful for strengthening
muscles prior to delivery. Three times a week is usually sufficient
to maintain an adequate fitness level, but proper stretching preand post-workout is essential to avoid an injury. Please consult
your doctor if you were inactive prior to conceiving, though.
Walking, swimming and biking are all possible exercises that are
safe to do while pregnant, but be sure to exercise in an area with
good footing and lighting to reduce the risk of falls. Strenuous
activity should be avoided, especially in advanced pregnancy.
Continuing to see a licensed doctor of chiropractic while pregnant can provide low back pain relief, but can also be very helpful
after delivery to help ligaments and joints return to their pre-pregnancy state. Chiropractic care can be a very safe and healthy alternative to taking pain medications. Your doctor of chiropractic can
be a great help before, during and after your pregnancy. Back pain
does not have to be a part of pregnancy!

Bromelain
Ananas comosus L.
(pineapple plant)

romelain, or pineapple extract, is a mixture of enzymes

found in the pineapple plant. Pineapple is native to the
Americas but is now grown throughout the world in tropical and subtropical regions. Historically, natives of Central and
South America used pineapple for a variety of ailments, such as
digestive disorders.
Currently, bromelain is used as a dietary supplement for nasal
swelling and inflammation, osteoarthritis, cancer, poor digestion
and muscle soreness. Topical (applied to the skin) bromelain is
used for wounds and burns.
Bromelain is obtained from the stem or fruit of the pineapple.
It is sold in the form of a powder, cream, tablet or capsule, and it
may be used alone or in combination with other ingredients.

How much do we know?

There have been several studies on the use of bromelain for nasal
swelling and inflammation and for removing dead skin from
burns. Little research has been done on other uses of bromelain.

What have we learned?

A systematic review of the evidence indicates that bromelain is

helpful in relieving symptoms of acute nasal and sinus inflammation when used in combination with standard medications.
Research in human and animal studies has found that topical
bromelain preparations may help remove dead skin from burns.
However, not enough evidence exists to show whether topical
bromelain helps to treat burns and other wounds.
There is conflicting evidence about whether bromelain, alone
or in combination with other ingredients, is helpful for osteoarthritis and for muscle soreness after exercise.
There is not enough evidence to determine if bromelain is effective for the other conditions for which it has been used, including
cancer and gastrointestinal problems.
A National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)-funded research is examining bromelain for
inflammatory conditions and asthma.

What do we know about its safety?

There have been some reports of gastrointestinal problems,

increased heart rate and menstrual problems in people who have
taken bromelain orally.
Allergic reactions may occur in individuals who are sensitive or
allergic to pineapples or who may have other allergies.

Keep in mind

Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health
approaches you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage
your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care. For tips
about talking with your health care providers about complementary
health approaches, see NCCAMs Time to Talk campaign.

Getting the big

picture about
blood sugar,
weight control
and
a healthy diet

By Grandma Rose

have been writing about blood sugar control and weight loss
for about a year and a half. My goal is to give you information each month that will help you be healthier, feel better and
have more energy. I hope it has been helpful to you.
The length of my articles is limited. My concern is that you are
getting a whole lot of information in my short articles which is
all well and good but perhaps you arent getting the big picture
about the foods you consume.
Once you really understand the characteristics of all the foods
you eat, crafting a healthy diet for yourself and your family will be
easy. Your diet will keep your blood sugar and weight down; it will
not be difficult. You will have consistent energy levels to do the
things you want to do with your life. There will be no more energy
peaks and valleys. It also will not feel like deprivation.
Unfortunately, the entrance of more and more processed foods
into our food supply has led to confusion and a loss of understanding of natural whole foods and how to prepare them. Most
foods are a combination of many ingredients and chemicals. It is
pretty impossible for a person under 70 years old to make sense of
the foods now found in our supermarkets.
Learning about natural whole foods is worth the effort. Unfortunately, it is not in the interest of food-processing companies to
make this information easily available to you. If you really understood what they are feeding you, you would no longer buy their
products! To make things even more difficult, some information
on the Internet is not correct, and you have no way of knowing
what to believe.
You can overcome these problems! It will take effort and dedication on your part but it is so important for you to learn about
whole foods so you can pass the lost knowledge on to your children so they can pass it on to your grandchildren. The answer
to poor health cannot be found in a pill bottle. It is in the food
you eat.
www.naturespathways.com

Grandma Rose is here to help you. Stop in at Natural Expressions

and lets talk about it. We can talk about ways that Grandma Rose
can help you and your family discover the lost knowledge that is
so important to you. If you belong to a group, perhaps you need a
speaker. Would a class be better?

Stretch your boundaries

Reaching Treetops Yoga offers a space where everyone can grow
By Rebecca Bentz
If youve seen their demonstrations at downtown Waukeshas Friday Night
Live or heard about the studio from a friend who has taken fitness to the next
level (literally), we can understand if you think aerial yoga is all Reaching Treetops Yoga offers. Its hard to think of anything else after youve seen people fly!
But wed be doing you a disservice if we didnt make sure you knew
that these two community-focused studios have so much more to offer
both on and off the ground.

Making [exercise] fun gives it an additional mental element, Lucente

explains. It really invigorates you to want to do it more. It motivates you
to try a little bit harder.
Theres plenty of fun and motivation to be found at Reaching Treetops
Yoga: no matter what your age, current fitness level or health goals.

Theres no better time than now to focus on wellness

Yoga is definitely a Reaching Treetops specialty. In addition to aerial

yoga, the studios offer a variety of floor options, including Hatha,
Vinyasa, prenatal, Yoga Body Bootcamp, restorative (which emphasizes
better body awareness and back care), assisted chair (a low-impact class
perfect for individuals with limited mobility), and more.
No matter how great your passion, no matter how advanced [you
are] or if youre a beginner, theres really something for everybody,
Lucente points out.
Reaching Treetops even offers kid and teen floor and aerial yoga.
Instructors connect traditional yoga moves and poses with things kids
might do or see outside of class. Students might be asked to mimic zoo
animals or a trip aboard a spaceship; by doing so, they exercise their
bodies and creativity.
The kids yoga classes are great at combining fitness and play for all
children, but they have a particularly powerful impact on children with
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The exciting classes at
Reaching Treetops help these children focus and build their confidence.

Februarys a quiet month. The holidays are long over and the hubbub
over New Years resolutions has died down. This lull before spring offers
the perfect atmosphere to concentrate on your well-being.
Februarys a great time of year to revisit those intentions that you set
at the beginning of the year and really start to focus on being mindful,
following through with your intentions and just trying to stay true to
yourself, explains Rhiannon Lucente, an aerial instructor and teacher
trainer at Reaching Treetops Yoga.
Part of staying true to yourself involves being realistic. If you started
out the year intent on losing pounds by sweating on the treadmill
despite a hatred of running or doing the same thing over and over again
chances are youve begun re-evaluating or even slacking off on your
resolution. But theres no need to throw in the towel on your fitness goals
just yet. Revitalize your approach to wellness by trying an exercise that
will not only challenge you physically, but excite you!
26

Natures Pathways | February 2015

Yoga and beyond

www.naturespathways.com

A lot of these kids have a very hard time just slowing their brains,
Lucente explains. Theres so many ways that you can get these children
involved and calm them down while getting them to participate. Its
really great because they take a lot of this stuff home with them... These
children get that great sense of confidence and realize, Im not different,
Im just more exciting.
Children arent the only ones who can learn new things at Reaching
Treetops. For adults who are passionate and experienced in yoga and want
to bring the benefits of the practice to others, Reaching Treetops provides
both adult and kids aerial yoga teacher training. And for individuals who
want to diversify their fitness activities, Reaching Treetops offers incredible
variety, including tai chi, Zumba, and even wellness retreats to Mexico.

A healthy community for everyone

Wellness and community involvement go hand-in-hand at Reaching Treetops Yoga. Its important to the studios team that people from all walks of
life have the opportunity to learn key fitness and well-being skills.
We like to reach out to the community, reach out pricewise, Lucente
says. We really prefer to keep the class sizes low so theyre affordable to
everyone. In fact, non-profit-oriented Reaching Treetops regularly offers
$3 community yoga classes and participates in local fundraising events.
Another big part of that community outreach is the Reaching Treetops Yogas instructors. Ask around and youll find nothing but glowing
reviews of the studios team. Perhaps theres no bigger fan than Reaching
Treetops Yoga owner Alyssa Konda.
The studios are a collaboration of all the instructors involved, she
explains. The studio isnt a studio without them.
Reaching Treetops Yogas dozen or so instructors come from all different backgrounds that include traditional fitness and yoga, modern and
traditional dance, and rehabilitation-focused fitness.

Reaching Treetops even has a traveling aerial yoga rig thats perfect
for parties and other events. Attendees can try out aerial yoga themselves or the Reaching Treetops team can put on performances. Its a
great way to add drama and art to any gathering.
Its easy to understand why aerial yoga is such a hit at events and in
the Reaching Treetops studios. Watching people perform amazing physical feats in the air is mesmerizing! But Lucente urges people to test it out
for themselves.
A lot of people are afraid of trying aerial yoga, she says. We like to
offer something extraordinary, like aerial, in a way that communicates
to an average person. We really want to not just put that challenge out
to try it, but to give yourself the opportunity to really tap into something
maybe you dont think you can do.
So what do you say? Are you ready to fly?
Whether you just want to get moving and have fun or you are hoping
to take your yoga or other fitness practice to the next level, head to
the treetops: where everyone can stretch their wings! Classes are
offered every day of the week.

Transform into your best self

One reason Reaching Treetops Yoga is so popular is the ability to work at a

speed or environment thats most comfortable for you. People know their
limits, and Reaching Treetops helps safely stretch those limits. The studios
are designed to be accessible for all fitness levels and backgrounds.
In addition to its variety of group classes, Reaching Treetops offers a
special space dedicated to private lessons for individuals or groups.
So if someone is new to yoga and theyre not comfortable trying it, or
theyre really wanting to sprout out from their foundation, and saying, I
really want to work on something different that we didnt address in class,
we have these private lessons, Lucente explains. The private lessons are
also great for those who are rehabbing after an injury, or even for parties
like bachelorette celebrations.

Aquarius Equal,
different and a
team player
Dates: Jan. 22 Feb. 21
Ruled by: Uranus
Element: Air

By Barry Kerr

New Moon chart, Feb. 8, 5:46 pm

hough true for everyone, the following information will

feel more relevant to you if your sun, north node, Chiron
and/or a group of other planets are in Aquarius on your
birth chart.

What is Aquariuss intention?

Last month, Capricorn invited us to step boldly into the world

and manifest our visions. Now, Aquarius is here to show us this is
always a team effort. Uranus, ruler of freedom and individuality,
prompts our intuitive awareness toward seeing ourselves objectively, as part of a greater organism of humanity. Oh, Aquarius!
What now?
Our inner Aquarius/Uranus knows, intuitively, that the authority of the status quo is temporary to the understandings of our
limited senses, changing as consciousness evolves. Thus, we
strive for the ideal, often feeling rejected or weary when the
world doesnt get it. We know, in our hearts, that we are all in
this together, as equals. Aquariuss spiritual intention is to teach
us how to remain true to our unique vision while blending in with
others, collectively.
Through Aquarius, we learn objectivity, equality, group participation and serving humanitarian causes. We learn to relate to
others as whole individuals, not just their functions, recognizing
them as special, just like us. We learn to share our intuitive and
unconventional ideas with others and encourage them to do the
same. This further taming of our ego creates friendships, camaraderie and belonging. We begin to experience the oneness of
humanity as an extension of self.
Our unconscious Aquarius, in a misguided attempt to feel the
28

Natures Pathways | February 2015

belonging, may yield too quickly to peer pressure, thus losing

individual will, waiting for others to prompt our decisions and
actions. Or in fear of belonging, we may run away from confrontations, detach from emotional situations, aloof and waiting
endlessly for more information.

What needs healing and growth?

Our Aquarius ego can often feel like an outsider, estranged by

the rest of humanity, feeling very different, like something is
wrong with us, with no place in the world. For comfort, we might
purposefully try to stand apart by being contrary, eccentric or
rebellious, thus feeling in control of our aloneness. Yet our innate
drive for connection keeps us trying to belong. Instead of real,
intimate friendships, humanitarian causes or technological webs
might dominate our social life.
From this position as outsider, we are forced to look at the world
more objectively, to discover why we feel alienated, and eventually
see a much bigger picture of our place in the world. Our intuition
informs us of how the outer world reflects the complexity of our
inner being and we gradually feel more integrated and connected
to others and to the whole. Eventually, the synergy of human spirit
feels like home.

What can I do this month?

To heal and evolve your Aquarian self, pay attention to how well
you do in groups. Do you strive to understand the group, or do
you insist on getting your own way? Can you follow your own
heart and still work with a team, or do you do whats expected in
order to feel you belong? Do you treat others as whole and special
www.naturespathways.com

or do you only see them as serving a particular function? Do you

honor your intuition? Are you open to creating win/win situations? In a world that falls short of your ideals, can you still feel
your loving connection to humanity and know you have a place?

Additional support (current planetary transits)

Mercury will be retrograde (backward) in Aquarius from Jan. 21

to Feb. 12. This will keep your mind focused on group endeavors
and innovative changes in your life. Meanwhile, Venus and Mars
advance into Pisces, bringing soulfulness to your relationships
and desires. In late February, as Venus and Mars merge on the
cusp of Pisces/Aries, romantic passion could evolve into mystical bliss.
The new moon is on Feb. 18. The moon and sun, joined right on
the cusp of Pisces, and nearby Neptune, will call to your spiritual
heart your longing for divine oneness. With Saturn squaring
(90 degrees) this in Sagittarius, this longing may seem to conflict
with your duty to reality, but you will know otherwise. Under this
new moon, set your intention by the next full moon to experience
the reality of the oneness of your soul with another. Venus and
Mars will certainly be doing their part.

Forgiveness
then emotional
closure

By Robert Matuszak

This article comes from the chapter on

forgiveness and emotional closure from my
book, The Mans Grief Toolbox, A Journey
from Grief to Peace.

n my self-healing and working with

others the past 23-plus years, this
process of emotional closure came
about. The first time I did this came from

a job layoff. It seemed like my car was

stuck in emotional mud and was going
nowhere. Other techniques only gave
temporary respite. I needed to find the
core issue and found a ton of suppressed
anger at both God and my ex-employer. I
vented my anger at both and the process
for releasing my grief came forth.
Through this I realized that I didnt have
to carry the emotional pain and suffering anymore. There was no need to be the
gerbil on the exercise wheel going around
and around going absolutely nowhere.
Incorporating my forgiveness technique
mentioned below, I was able to close the
door on that grief. In fact, this is the phrase
I used that brought emotional closure: I
bring closure to this experience. I am free
to be me. Only goodness and abundance
await me. I felt re-empowered and my
confidence and self-worth returned.

The emotional closure process

Here is a suggested ceremony to set the

tone for a closure process.
Get in a relaxed sitting position to
write. Do some deep breathing before
beginning.
Write your intent for this process.
Specifically define the issue and
person(s) perceived as the cause.
Begin writing your letter: Dear

[name]. State what you feel: I am

[mad, sad, frustrated, abused, hurt].
Write specifically what upset you and
what it did to you. State what you
need to heal this, e.g., I want this loss
behind me, I want peace between us
and I want you to stop abusing me.
Write your truth.
After you have completed the above,
then in a new paragraph acknowledge
some positive traits (up to three) of
that person if you feel comfortable.
Then in the last (and most important)
paragraph, do the forgiveness. Let the
words come forth or just use I forgive
you for [state the reason(s) for it].
Close with I bring closure to this,
then sign and date the letter.
Then verbally forgive yourself.
Complete the circle of forgiveness. It
can be as simple as I forgive myself
for my role in this, I forgive and free
myself from this or whatever you feel
is best to say.
Do not mail or give this letter to that
person(s)!
If you arent a writer, speak this aloud
or find a creative outlet like art, sculpture, etc.
Next you should perform a closure process.
Without this, you still leave the 800-pound
www.naturespathways.com

gorilla on your shoulders. You carry him,

affecting future emotional scenarios. Here
is a method I have used:

SUBSCRIBE
TODAY!

Burning bowl ceremony

This is an effective closure process.

Have a bowl large enough to put the
letter in for burning or toss it on the
grill, fire or fireplace, or shred it.
Do not mail or give this letter to that
person(s)!
Visualize yourself breaking free
emotionally from this situation: closing
a door, crossing a threshold, cutting
the cord between you and the offending person.
Reward yourself. I believe that we are
deserving of goodness from others
and ourselves. The reward can be very
simple, like treating yourself to an ice
cream cone or buying something. Be
creative with your reward and enjoy it.
Some benefits from this include:
Mental and emotional release and
relief
Clearer memories without the
emotional baggage
Lessened impact to emotional hot
buttons, or no impact at all
A true feeling of peace of mind
A sense of freedom
Each time I have used the closure process
which I used with all my grief, including
traumatic grief I experienced feelings of
relief that the grief was behind me, and I
experienced relaxation and freedom to be
myself again. The grief no longer controlled
me. I felt empowered, free from the fear of
old emotions that consumed me.
Remember, everyone is different and
full or partial closure varies with the individual. We all grieve differently what
works for one may not work for others.

Drewry Farms
Maple
Products

rewry Farms Maple Products is a sixth-generation family

farm that produces high quality, good-tasting maple
syrup. Currently, fifth-generation descendent Barbara
Drewry-Zimmerman manages the business while her parents,
Dave and Ruth Drewry, provide their many years of knowledge
and support. Many other family members use their talents and
provide a lot of the labor, especially during the tapping and syrupmaking season along with technical support and selling maple
syrup products at farmers markets.

A historic art

Drewry ancestors came to this part of Wisconsin in 1847, purchasing land that also included a high concentration of maple trees on
the Onion River south of Plymouth. The warm 40-degree days of
spring and the freezing nights herald the maple syrup season in
the northeast United States and southeast Canada, the only areas
of the world with maple trees with sufficient sugar in their sap to
produce syrup economically.
Early explorers in America discovered the American Indians had
invented the art of sugar making: collecting sap and boiling water
out of it to produce both syrup and sugar. Tomahawks were used to
open trees and twigs were placed in the cracks to direct the sap into
baskets collecting the liquid. Later, quills were inserted into small
cracks, but the big advance came with actually drilling a hole in the
tree, pounding in a wooden spout and hanging a wooden bucket on
it. Sap was then boiled in a large kettle to remove water, leaving only
thick syrup or sugar behind. For over a century, maple sugar was
the only sugar used by most of the people in the U.S.

Maple syrup collection today

Today, tapping is done with power tools. Spouts are scientifically

designed in metal or plastic, and metal pails, plastic bags and plastic
tubing are used to collect sap. Plastic tubing suspended on wire
lines, looking like a spider web in the woods, with vacuum pumps
sucking the sap out of the trees, is the newest technology being
used by larger maple syrup producers, including the Drewry family.
32

Natures Pathways | February 2015

www.naturespathways.com

All their syrup is sold locally in

winter and summer farmers
markets, restaurants, natural
health food stores, their website
and retail specialty gift shops.
Specifically designed reverse osmosis machines and evaporators
designed with preheaters speed the removal of water to produce the
syrup. The faster the water is evaporated, the lighter the color, more
delicate the flavor and the higher the grade of syrup.
It still takes at least 40 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup.
Approximately 39 gallons of water are removed and nothing is
added. When the trees start to bud in the spring, the season is
over. Wisconsin ranks third or fourth in maple syrup production
in the United States, depending on the year. In Wisconsin, we only
tap about 10 percent of the available trees, compared to producers
in Vermont, who tap close to 75 percent of their trees.
With peoples increased interest in natural foods and the
research currently being done on maple syrup, we are learning
that it is not only a tasty treat, but is very good for you. With tree
roots going deep into the earth, the maple tree brings forth many
needed vitamins and minerals for humans.
Drewry Farms Maple Products main sugar bush of over 100 acres
is located on a hill overlooking the Onion River and the former
village of Winooski, 18 miles west of Sheboygan and 50 north of
Milwaukee. They currently tap over 5,000 trees using suspended
pipelines and vacuum pumps. Sap is boiled down to syrup in the
syrup house located near the bottom of the hill on Winooski Road.
After syrup is produced, it is bottled in glass or plastic containers
that range in size from 8 ounces to 1 gallon. All their syrup is sold
locally in winter and summer farmers markets, restaurants, natural
health food stores, their website and retail specialty gift shops.

Come visit!

An annual Open House is held the fourth Saturday in March

(March 28 this year), and most years people can see sap actually
being collected and processed. Maple syrup food samples, childrens activities, and tours of the sugar bush and syrup producing
facility make this event popular with entire families.
Visitors are always welcome to tour both the sugar bush and the
syrup house especially during the maple syrup season, which usually
starts in March. Calling ahead for an appointment is welcomed.
You can contact Drewery Farms through their website,
www.drewryfarmsmaple.com, or call them at 920-893-5189.
It might be simply maple, but it is the natural and healthy choice!

wood finishes. Look for the next installment in next months issue, at
www.naturespathways.com, or northwoodscasket.com/blog.

n the process of building a sustainable and eco-friendly casket

company, weve had to learn a lot about eco-friendly wood
finishes. Weve learned how to achieve a wide variety of beautiful wood finishes without using harmful chemicals. Most of
our learning has been a matter of rediscovering the historic techniques mastered by 16th century English craftsmen. In this article
well briefly cover products and useful techniques for achieving
natural stained wood finishes.
Staining wood includes techniques that expose, enhance or otherwise highlight the natural characteristics of wood. Stains highlight the
natural grain pattern of wood enhancing, masking or changing the
color with chemistry or color pigment mixed in the stain. Typically,
stain techniques must be followed by some form of sealant or protective finish. Commercially available stains are available in hundreds of
colors and fall into either oil-based or water-based categories all of
which contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other harmful
chemicals and vapors. Many are unpleasant to work with and require
ventilation and care while handling them.
There are three categories of staining recipes and techniques
well cover in this short article that I like to refer to as (1) adding
pigment to natural oils, (2) glazing with milk paint and (3) dissolving chemical concoctions. Each of these techniques will introduce you to a whole book of recipes for endless experimentation

and amazing results. All of these techniques employ natural,

biodegradable, nontoxic, eco-safe, VOC-free ingredients with
the exception of some of those in the chemical category that
produce toxic solutions that must be handled with care.
Adding pigment to natural oils is perhaps the easiest way to
stain and protect wood in one step. Adding iron oxide (powdered
rust) to tung oil or linseed oil will yield a beautiful red stain much
like what youd expect from a redwood deck stain color. Another
natural pigment, Gilsonite, is as black as obsidian and creates a
beautiful aged, dark look on pine and oak. Any natural pigment
used by painters can be added to natural oils to your liking and
brushed into wood. Covering the stain coat with a second coat of
oil will help encapsulate the pigment. Other topcoat techniques
including waxes and burnishing pastes are effective as well.
Glazing with milk paint is an easy way to add color to wood
without covering up the natural beauty of the wood grain. Start
with any color of milk paint and dilute at least 1-to-1 with water.
Dilute further for lighter staining. I prefer to use a foam brush to
push the stain onto the wood instead of pulling like you would
with a paint brush. For large projects, consider using a large
sponge. Apply the paint and let dry for 24-48 hours before applying a protective finish of natural oil, wax or burnishing paste.
www.naturespathways.com

Creating your own homemade stain with chemistry can open up

a whole category of concocting your own solutions. White vinegar
is an inexpensive, eco-safe chemical to start with. Try leaving some
rusty nails in vinegar or steel wool for a few days and the metal will
release iron oxides into the vinegar. The result is an effective stain
that will add beautiful browns to your wood. Some old copper wire
salvaged from an electric motor will take several weeks in vinegar,
but the green-blue and teal color is worth the wait.
Vegetables are an ancient source of color for staining wood. Try
beet juice for bright pink, blueberries for purplish gray, blackberries
for bright purple and vegetable greens for yellows. Blend the whole
fruit or vegetable into a paste and mix in 1-2 tablespoons of alum
per blender full for a fixer. Use the paste thick and leave it sit on the
wood overnight or thin it with water for various saturations.

paint, natural waxes, and nontoxic burnishing glazes, check out

Spiritual
hunger

By Helen Borth

t this time in human history, all of us are blessed to be

living on planet Earth. It is a time when our awareness
may be picking up a very subtle response called spiritual
hunger with no real connection to food. This slight pull has to do
with going beyond our natural strong response to all things physical, to waking up the idea of being more than just human, more
than just physical.
The inner pull feels like a kind of hunger. We do not know what
to expect or experience in order to respond. I repeat: We are
blessed to be on this planet in the year 2015 because those individuals who are called masters, sages, seers, etc. have chosen to feed
us, or in other words teach us and show us about waking up. They
woke up with new understandings and now live by something
greater than past, learned and ordinary thinking. These planetary
teachers have moved into a realm of intuition and spontaneous
freedom beyond the limits of human conditioning and are staying
here on Earth to help the rest of us.
A spiritual seed is born inside of every person. For some it
becomes activated and then magically expresses an unfamiliar type of hunger. In time, the seed longs for greater truths and
continues to be active and interested in change. Just like the past
years, the year 2015 is already a year when more books, spiritual
material, endless YouTube videos, discussions, meetings and
workshops are available to assist us when our spiritual hunger
shows up. The helpful material and guidance takes us deeper into
our spiritual journey and who we really are.
Srila Prabhupada says, Every person is hungry for spiritual
happiness and therefore many people are not satisfied. They are
trying to gratify their senses in so many ways, but still they are
not satisfied; they remain hungry. Just like when a child is still
crying. Its mother may be offering something but the child is
asking for something which the mother cannot understand. Similarly, the dissatisfaction of the world means that people are actually hankering for spiritual happiness. Every person is hungry for
www.naturespathways.com

spiritual happiness. They are trying to gratify their senses in so

many ways, but still they are not satisfied, because actually they
are hungry. This type of happiness is seldom offered, and when it
is offered, many do not understand it and do not take to it. This
is the situation.
Humanity is being offered uplifting statements, ideas and
messages containing new ideas which the awakened ones refer to
as pointers. Pointers are usually a sentence or more that, when
honestly and deeply repeated, have the ability to lift our personal
vibration out of everyday thinking into a newer pattern with a
higher frequency. For example: The sages remind us in a pointer,
that you and I already are that which we are looking for on our
spiritual journey. We already are spiritual beings. In classwork and
by paying attention to what the masters are saying, the pointers are
easily understood and can be placed immediately into practice.
We already are spiritual beings is a phrase that when turned into
food changes our thinking. Instead of trying to become a spiritual being, it turns into accepting the fact that we already are spiritual beings. This is our heritage. There are many, many helpful
pointers suggesting ways to feed and recognize our spirit for our
optimal well-being.
The spiritual hunger of human beings is ancient and universal.
It is also alive and well today. In 2015 join a class, a group or an
active community so you too can become an active participant in
personal inner change and, as a result, offer change in awareness
to the entire planet. Continue to be open and allowing as you seek
tools that help satisfy your spiritual hunger.

Understanding
the planets role
in
astrology

By Lisa Anne

strology is the study of life above us and within us. It

is the universes imprint on us the moment we take our
first breath. It is energy; it is the energy of a soul put into
words. Astrology is a language and the astrologer is the translator.
Astrology consists of three major components. The planets, the
signs and the houses. The planets describe what is affected. The
signs show how we are affected. And the houses show where we are
affected. This articles focus will be on the planets.
There are points of focus with the planets. There are the luminaries, which are the sun and the moon, and the planets: Mercury,
Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and now-dwarfed
Pluto. Each one of us has a connection to each heavenly body,
planet or energy. We each are attuned to the frequency of some
more than others. Your horoscope will reveal this. Your horoscope
is a literal snapshot of the sky the moment you were born, displaying where each planet was and what sign each planet was in. The
houses that arrange the planets give more insight, but the planets
themselves show us where our energy is compelled and directed.
Learning to understand your own astrology is a seekers paradise, illuminating the whole self in a way that is so efficient and
accurate. It is a journey within and a journey amongst the stars.
Astrology offers a window into the universe within us all.

Sun

The sun represents our life force, vitality and will. It is our creative
spark, our light within. Wherever the sun is shows in which areas
of life you wish to be seen as a leader, and whatever sign its in
shows how you choose to lead.

Moon

The ever-changing faces of the moon represent the inner world

within us, within the ever-changing faces of the heart. The moon
represents our emotional needs, what we need to feel safe and secure
the mother within us all. The sign your moon is in shows how you
handle your feelings and what your unique sensitivities are.

Mercury

The fastest-moving planet represents the fastest part of ourselves:

38

Natures Pathways | February 2015

the mind. It is how we learn, converse, write, express and how we

process information. It can be very helpful for parents to know their
childs chart, as knowing where Mercury is can help navigate learning modalities and focus.

Venus

The brightest planet in the solar system reflects where we find

our own sense of light: either through beauty, love, money and/or
relationships. Venus light attracts us and captivates us: So much
beauty, so much attention, who to love, how to love, what to love.
The lesson underneath Venus is to learn balance.

Mars

The red planet represents aggression, anger, masculinity and

finding the courage to fight for what we want. It is the male archetype within us all. Are we in tune with speaking our mind, going
after what we want, fighting for our desires? Mars in our birth
chart will reveal our unique relationship with this energy.

Jupiter

The largest planet represents all big things: ideas, visions, travel,
beliefs, optimism, righteousness, confidence. Jupiter is the blessing above. Wherever Jupiter is in your chart shows where your
ideals are rooted. Many blessings come under Jupiter, as well as
too much abundance. The saying, too much of a good thing,
is Jupiters domain. Where are we lucky? Where do we have no
boundaries? Jupiter is the antithesis of Saturn.
www.naturespathways.com

Saturn

The ringed planet represents where we cage ourselves in, and how
control plays a role in our life. It symbolizes things we cant control and
how we deal with reality, time and boundaries. It is the judge within us
that constantly rates our performance. Is it good enough? Am I doing
enough? Am I working hard enough? Saturn rarely answers yes.

Uranus

This is the planet of discovery, sudden change and shock. Uranus

discovery was just that, when once, humankind thought Saturn
was the end of the solar system. Then out of the blue, what was
thought a comet turned out to be a new planet Uranus. This
energy represents our shocking views, our need to stand out and
be seen as different. It is not a subtle energy by any means. It is our
voice of rebellion, freedom, protest and individuality. See me! I
am not you. I am the outsider. Wherever Uranus is shows your
need to break the rules, be different and blaze a new path.

Neptune

Its the planet of mystery, with its many clouds of gases, rings,
and many, many moons (emotions). What is really beneath the
surface? The meaning of the Neptune in astrology represents
our intuition, our feelings of compassion, our limits of love and
unending sacrifices to help others. It is where we lose ourselves
through feelings. It is the bleeding heart for the child, the family,
the country, the planet, the Universe. The love has no boundary,
no limit, no end. Neptune shows our spiritual side, our love of the

invisible, our love of escaping the physical realm.

Pluto

Now coined a dwarf planet, Pluto represents anything but small

issues. The farthest known body from the sun, Pluto shows us our
dark side, and dark isnt always negative. It is our shadow. It is
where our power and thirst for too much power lies. It is where
our compulsion lies: our need to be bigger, to be more important, to be something, to be somebody. It is secrets and brooding,
watching others masquerade as frauds and revealing their deceit:
the inner detective, the sleuth, the voice within that is attuned to
all falseness. Deep within, deep beyond lies our compass.
Each of these points in the sky represents different energy and
frequencies within each of us. Astrology, born over 3,000 years
ago, offers us the gift of understanding our energetic blueprint. It
is not about prediction. It is about understanding: understanding
the world around us, and understanding ourselves. As above, so
below but also within.

it Kamala really ends up being more like a friend or family.

The day I was to be induced, Kamala contacted me in the
morning and made sure to keep in contact to know when the right
time to come in would be. She arrived just in time for my labor to
really get going. She was a godsend. Despite the number of birthing classes I took and the amount of research I did, in the moment
it all went out of my brain. Having Kamala there to remind me of
pain management techniques and positions was my saving grace.
(Due to medical conditions I had to do labor and delivery naturally and pain medication free.)
Kamalas knowledge and experience is invaluable. She was such a
great support and was always in the right place at the right time. I was
worried that having and extra person would be distracting, but she
blends into the background and is suddenly right there at the exact
moment you need her. Having her there also allowed my husband to
be more connected to me instead of worrying about logistics and our
surroundings. Having her supporting me and supporting him made
both of us feel relaxed and confident in the whole process.
When I had brought up to my husband that I wanted a doula
for the birth of our third child, he was skeptical. After the delivery,
he told me that he is now a doula advocate, telling everyone that
if they have a baby they need a doula and it needs to be Kamala.
This birth was an incredibly healing experience compared to
my first two births and it wouldnt have been if we didnt have
Kamala there as a wonderful support system and fountain of
knowledge. I cannot recommend her service enough!

How to sneak
fruits and
vegetables into
any
recipe

ruits and vegetables are the building blocks of a healthy diet.

But many people do not eat the recommended number of
servings of produce. Thats especially true among growing
children, who can benefit greatly from the vitamins and nutrients
fruits and vegetables provide.
According to the latest data from the NPD Group, a market
research firm, Americans eat a little more than a cup of fruit
and a cup of vegetables per day. This is less than half of what the
government recommends. Anyone who eats roughly 2,000 calories per day should strive to consume between 2 to 3 cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruit per day.
Produce helps to fight disease because it contains healthy antioxidants, fiber, minerals and vitamins. Eating four cups per day
may seem difficult, but there are many ways to incorporate fruits
and vegetables into everyday recipes.
Substitute pureed fruit, like figs, pears and apples, for oil in
recipes for cakes and cookies. This will ensure the baked
goods are moist but with a lot less fat.
Add fresh berries or raisins to breakfast cereals and oatmeal.
Add cauliflower or squash to boiled potatoes before mashing
them to increase the nutritional punch and flavor of mashed
potatoes.
Blend fruits and vegetables to create smoothies for breakfast
or lunch on the go.
Bake hearty muffins or breads with sweet potato or carrots in
the batter.
Mix stewed tomatoes in with your broth soup base to make a
vegetable or chicken soup even more nutritious.
Opt for vegetables piled high atop a slice of pizza in lieu of
meats or extra cheese.
Divide your dinner plate into quadrants, filling half of the
plate with vegetables, one quarter with meat and the remainder with a whole grain.
Replace lettuce on a sandwich or burger with a fresh leaf of
spinach. While youre dressing your sandwich, add a slice of
tomato, too.
Substitute fresh vegetables and fruit slices for chips when
www.naturespathways.com

serving dips and salsas. Kale chips are growing in popularity.

Give children a cup of sliced grapes with their lunches as a

refreshing and healthy snack.

Shred vegetables into a hearty slaw and top it with a vinai-

grette or a typical mayonnaise-based dressing.

Blend other vegetables into your pasta sauce.

Use vegetables instead of pasta in traditional dishes. Layer

eggplant slices to make a lasagna. Or use a spiral slicer to slice

zucchini or carrots when making homemade noodles.
Fruit salad is often a refreshing snack or dessert. Having fruit
already diced in a large bowl makes it more convenient to eat
and possibly more enticing to children.
Make a vegetable roll-up, filling pizza dough with broccoli or
spinach and shredded cheese.
Mix together an avocado, cup of cocoa powder and cup
honey to create a healthy alternative to chocolate pudding.
Use pureed vegetables to thicken cheese sauce for macaroni
and cheese recipes.
Shred vegetables and add them to beaten eggs for omelets or
scrambles.

Pet sensitivities
demystified
Tackle the irritations affecting
your animal friend
.....................................................................

et sensitivities are on the rise, yet

many pet owners may be unaware of
what is specifically impacting their
four-legged family members. With a host
of potential allergens and other irritants
possibly affecting your pet, it is crucial to
understand the source so you can mitigate
the negative effect it may be having on your
animals health and overall well-being.
Here are three common sources of sensitivities that may be affecting your cat or

dog, along with suggested remedies to help

your pet lead a healthier (and happier) life.

Outdoor pollutants

The great outdoors is often a major source

of allergens and irritants, which can be
linked to sensitivities. Just like humans,
pets can be impacted by seasonal, plantbased allergies. Pollens and grasses are
common sources during the warm spring
and summer months.

Be aware of your animals usual habits

and take note if a reaction may be correlated with a particular season. If you are
concerned, you might consider a trip to
the vet to help determine your best course
of action.

Food

Food can also cause sensitivities. Michele

Dixon, a specialist in pet health and
nutrition at pet food company Petcurean,
agrees.
Food sensitivities are increasingly prevalent in pets such as cats and dogs, she
says. If you suspect your pet may be suffering from a food-related intolerance, try
replacing their food with one that is geared
towards their specific dietary needs.

Indoor allergens

Perhaps less of a perceived threat, indoor

allergens such as dust mites and mold
spores can also take their toll. Cleaning
your floors and carpets regularly to minimize the dust that has accumulated is one
method for decreasing the risk of these
issues.
By closely monitoring your pets exposure to indoor and outdoor allergens, and
keeping an eye on how they react to the
food they eat, you can help ensure your
pet thrives.

Osteopathic
manipulative
treatment
in pregnant
women

By Tracy Bretl, D.O.

regnant women experience many

physiologic and structural changes
during pregnancy that affect their
day-to-day life. The use of osteopathic
manipulative treatment (OMT) during
pregnancy may improve and optimize
physiologic function and improve quality
of life for pregnant women. If OMT is used
from the beginning of pregnancy through
delivery, the change in blood flow can be
affected to provide benefit to the fetus and
avoid harm to the pregnant patient.
There have been a number of articles
published that discuss the use of OMT
in pregnant patients. A review of these
articles, by John M. Lavelle, D.O., was
published in the Journal of the American
Osteopathic Association in June 2012. This
is a summary of that review.

Back pain

Back pain is a common complaint during

pregnancy. Typically, back pain can start
with the pregnancy and gradually worsen
with a peak in pain at 24 weeks. Prevalence
of back pain can range from 49 percent to
76 percent. A number of studies showed
that receiving OMT on a regular basis not
only reduces back pain but can decrease the
amount of sick leave associated with low
back pain.
Another study found a statistically
significant reduction of the degree of back
pain during labor in women who received
www.naturespathways.com

spinal manipulation during

p r e g n a n c y.
A n ot h e r
showed that OMT during labor reduced
the need for narcotic pain medication.

Labor

OMT to the low back can affect the pelvic

organs. Two studies showed a decrease
in the duration of labor in women who
received OMT during pregnancy. Average
labor time for a first pregnancy was
reduced from 15-21 hours in those who
did not receive OMT to just over 9 hours
in those who did receive OMT during
pregnancy. Average labor time for those
who had given birth before was reduced
from 9-11 hours to 5-6 hours in those who
received OMT during pregnancy.
One retrospective study found that use
of OMT during pregnancy significantly
reduced the probability of meconiumstained amniotic fluid, use of forceps
during pregnancy and the likelihood of
preterm delivery.

Cardiovascular health

There are a number of cardiovascular

changes that occur during pregnancy that
result in an increased amount of body
fluid and decreased movement of these
fluids. OMT can help regulate blood pressure as well as improve drainage of fluid

congestion and prevent negative effects of

fluid overload.
Increased fluid production/retention
can lead to swelling of the extremities and
structural problems such as carpal tunnel
syndrome. OMT can be used to decrease
fluid retention and eliminate carpal tunnel
syndrome.
One of osteopathic medicines main
philosophies is that, with the use of OMT,
the body can maintain health. With the
multiple anatomic and physiologic changes
that the body undergoes during pregnancy,
it is important that OMT be available to
maintain health in the pregnant woman.
OMT can enhance homeostasis and
improve comfort and quality of life. The use
of OMT can dramatically improve the lives
of women during pregnancy.

Moines Universitys College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in 1989.

he Midwest College of Oriental Medicine was founded in

1979 to provide a quality program of study in the Chinese
art of acupuncture, which was just then becoming recognized in the United States. Since its inception, the college has been
a reflection of the community and its people, and has played a
significant role in the growth and development of Oriental medicine throughout the country.
It is the colleges mission to provide an education that is rooted
in the historical context and teachings of traditional Chinese
medicine (TCM) and combine it with modern clinical applications to create a practitioner of acupuncture or Oriental medicine
that embraces the spirit of ancient medicine for modern times.

Environment and accreditation

The colleges main campus is in Racine on Old Greenbay Road,

only minutes from the University of WisconsinParkside campus.
The college also has a branch campus on the north side of Chicago,

Exchange program

The college is an affiliate of the Guangzhou University of Chinese

Medicine, an institution of over 5,000 students. This University is
located in mainland China about two hours north of Hong Kong.
It is recognized by the World Health Organization, and is one of
the most prestigious Chinese medical universities in China and
the world. An exchange program between the Midwest College
and the Guangzhou University has proved very rewarding, with
students from America gaining residency internship hours at
the universitys teaching hospitals. Professors from Guangzhou
participate in this teaching exchange program by spending
extended periods of time at the Midwest College to consult with
academic officers, lecture in class and provide interns with the
most current clinical approaches being developed in China.
Students from across the U.S. and several foreign countries
have entered the Midwest Colleges programs. The average age of
students is 36 years old with a wide range of educational backgrounds and work experience. The Midwest College seeks a
diverse student population and encourages anyone interested in
Oriental medicine, with the appropriate prerequisites, to consider
a career in TCM.
