Pages 55-61
Demand and Supply
-explains how prices are determined and how they guide the use of
resources to influence What, How, and For Whom goods and services
are produced
Markets and Prices
-Market
-has two sides
1) buyer
2)seller
-markets for goods, services, factors of production, inputs,
money, and financial
securities
-Markets that do not meet in person are e-commerce markets and the
currency markets
-competitive market-a market that has many buyers and sellers, so no
single buyer or seller can influence the price
-money price- the price of an object is the number of dollars that must
be given up in exchange for it
-relative price ratio of one price to another (is and opportunity cost)
Demand
-wants are the unlimited desires or wishes that people have for goods
and services
-quantity demanded the amount that consumers plan to buy during a
given time period at a particular price
-measured as an amount per unit of time
Law of Demand
- Other Things remaining the same, the higher the price of a
2) Income Effect
-when price rises the price rises relative to income reduce the
amount of things they buy
Demand Curve and Demand Schedule
-demand-relationship between the price of a good and the quantity
demanded of that good
-quantity demanded- refers to a point on a demand curve (the quality
demanded at a particular price
-demand curve- shows the relationship between the quantity
demanded of a good and its price when all other influences on
consumers planned purchases remain the same
-demand schedule- lists the quantities demanded at each price when
all other influenced on consumers planned purchases remain the same
Willingness and Ability to Pay
-measure of marginal benefit
A Change in Demand
-when any factor that influences buying plans changes (other than the
price of the good)
-Six factors bring changes in demand
1) the priced of related goods
2) expected future prices
3) income
4) expected future income and credit
5) Population
6) Preferences
Prices of Related Goods
-if the price for a substitute rises people will buy more of the original
product
-if the price falls people will buy the substitute
-complement-a good that is used in conjunction with another good
Expected Future Prices
-buy more of the good now before its price is expected to rise, so
demand for the good today increases
Income
-increase in income increases demand for most goods(does not lead to
demand in all goods)
-normal good- demand increases as income increases
-inferior good- demand decreases as income increases
-if the price falls, the quantity supplied decreases and there is a
movement down along the supply curve
-if price rises, the quantity supplied increases and there is movement
along the supply curve
Market Equilibrium
-when the price balances buying plans and selling plans
-Equilibrium price-the price at which the quantity demanded equals the
quantity supplied
-Equilibrium Quantity is the quantity bought and sold at the equilibrium
price.
-market moves toward equilibrium because
1) price regulates buying and selling plans
2) price adjusts when plans dont match
Price as a Regulator
-price too high quantity supplied exceeds the quantity demanded
-price too low quantity demanded exceeds the quantity supplied
Price Adjustments
-price below equilibrium there is a shortage
-price above equilibrium there is a surplus
A Shortage Forces the Price Up
-when price has increased to the point at which there is no longer a
shortage, the forces moving the price stop operating and the price
comes to rest at its equilibrium
A Surplus Forces the Price Down
-when the price has fallen to the point at which there is no longer a
surplus, the forces moving the price stop operating and the price
comes to rest at its equilibrium
The Best Deal Available for Buyers and Sellers
-demanders buy at the lowest possible price
-suppliers sell at the highest possible price
Predicting Changes in Price and Quantity
An Increase in Demand
-creates shortage at the original price and to eliminate the shortage,
the price must rise
A Decrease in Demand
-when demand increases, the price rises and the quantity increases
-when the demand decreases, the price falls and the quantity
decreases
An Increase in Supply
-there is an increase in the quantity demanded but no change in the
demand, a movement along, but no shift of, the demand curve
A Decrease in Supply
-when supply increases, the price falls and the quantity increases
-when the supply decreases, the price rises and the quantity decreases

All the Possible Changes in Demand and Supply
Change in Demand with No Change in Supply
-with an increase in demand and no change in supply, both the price
and quantity increase.
-decrease in demand and no change in supply, both the price and the
quantity decrease
Change in Supply with No Change in Demand
-with an increase in supply and no change in demand, the price falls
and the quantity increases
-with a decrease in supply and no change in demand , the price rises
and the quantity decreases
Increase in Both Demand and Supply
-an increase in demand raises the price and an increase in supply,
lowers the price
-we need to know the magnitudes of the changes in demand and
supply to predict the effects on price
Decrease in Both Demand and Supply
-when both demand and supply decrease, the quantity decreases and
the direction of the price change is uncertain
Decrease in Demand and Increase in Supply
-decrease in demand decreases the quantity and an increase in supply
increases the quantity
Increase in Demand and Decrease in Supply
-direction of the quantity change is uncertain
