Some common myths have arisen concerning hair loss.

Because of medical advancements

many of these myths are being corrected. For starters, although androgenetic alopecia,
pattern baldness, is genetic and can be hereditary, it is not passed down through only your
mother's side of the family. Either side of the family can pass down the genetic disposition
toward baldness. Also, contrary to old family tales, wearing hats does not cause baldness
either.
Most common hair loss comes under what has been commonly known as Male Pattern
Baldness (MPB). Although referred to as MPB, females also suffer from MPB, so it is better
to call MPB androgenetic alopecia.
Although hair loss is not life threatening, it is an indication of your internal health and it can
cause you serious problems with an image and self-confidence. There has been no absolute
cure found for hair loss, and many factors of hair loss are hereditary, however there are
several preventative measures you can take to maintain healthy hair and scalp.
Diet, Nutrition and Hair Loss
Keeping your body healthy reflects on the health of your hair. If your lifestyle is not healthy,
it will eventually reflect on your head. You will start to lose your hair and fulfill your genetic
coding. To keep healthy, as a reminder, you need to eat in the proper fashion, exercise, and
stay away from any kind of drugs - both medical and recreational.
To define what a healthy diet is, to preventing hair loss, can be individual and quite complex.
But the main vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that you need to take or eat to maintain healthy
hair are:
* vitamin A
* all B vitamins-particularly vitamins B-6 and B-12, folic acid, biotin
* vitamin C
* vitamin E
* copper, iron, zinc, iodine, silica
* essential fatty acids
* protein
* four - 6 glass of water.
The best way for you to maintain a healthy vitamin and mineral intake is a good diet.
Vitamins and minerals are abundant in raw fruits and vegetables. Eat them in the morning or
as in between meal snacks. A good mineral supplement would be an electrolyte liquid
mineral product.

It is not necessary or advisable to go out and buy a bunch of over-the-counter vitamin

supplements in order to achieve your suggested nutritional levels. Many over-the-counter
vitamins are chemically processed and are not completely absorbed.
It is also easy to overdose yourself with over the counter vitamins, particularly when taking
supplements of fat-soluble vitamins and minerals, causing toxicity and adverse reactions. The
likelihood of doing this is far less with food; therefore it is always best to obtain the bulk of
your vitamin and mineral requirements from whole organic raw foods.
.....

1. Step 1
Visit your doctor for a full-checkup. Hair loss can be the first sign of a underlying or
undiagnosed illness, such as an auto-immune condition. A full blood test can indicate
whether it's caused by a vitamin deficiency or thyroid disorder.
2. Step 2
Have a hair analysis done to reveal mineral deficiencies or contamination from
metals.
3. Step 3
Chemicals in products you use on your hair can increase your level of hair loss. Do
you use commercial dyes or harsh shampoos? Consider cutting them out and using
more natural products on your locks to keep loss at bay.
Top tip: When you visit a hair salon, always be sure to have a patch test done 24
hours before any colouring treatments!
4. Step 4
Within women, hormonal imbalances can cause increased hair loss. Pregnancy and
menapause can cause temporary hair loss which should return to normal once that
stage is complete. Birth control pills have been shown to affect some women's new
hair growth, so consider switching your oral contraceptive.
5. Step 5
Reduce your stress levels by increasing your levels of exercise. Stress can speed up
hair loss, so by engaging in 30 minutes of cardio vascular or aerobic exercise each day
you can help your body increase its ability to handle stress.
6. Step 6
Hair growth can be impaired by poor digestion, so improve your hair and overall
health by taking acidophilus after meals. It's available at most health food stores in a
powdered form.

7. Step 7

Oysters are a top source of zinc which can improve the health of your hair
Ensure you're getting enough antioxidants in your diet to protect yourself against free
radicals. Vitamins C & E have been shown to improve the overall health of your hair
and scalp.
Found in: Blackcurrants, lemons, broccoli, strawberries, spinach, sunflower seeds,
almonds, spinach, wheat germ oil.
8. Step 8
Vitamin A helps produce sebum (oils from the sebaceous gland) which can promote a
healthy scalp.
Found in: cheese, eggs, cabbage and apricots
9. Step 9
Zinc deficiency can cause the thinning or loss of hair, so ensure you are getting
enough!
Found in: oysters, almonds, sunflower seeds
10. Step 10
Iron deficiency can lead to anaemia which causes a decrease in the numbers of red
cells and can impact on your hair and scalp. While iron tablets can be purchased, look
to boost your levels naturally with a selection of iron-rich foods in your diet.
Found in: lean meats, liver, seafood, spinach

It is normal to shed hair every day and the truth is we loose between 100-125 hairs on any
given day. Hair that is shed falls out at the end of growth cycle. At any given time 10% of our
hair is in what is called a "resting phase" and after 2-3 months resting, hair falls out and new
hair grows in its place. Some people, however, experience more hair loss than is normal.

Androgenetic Alopecia Accounts for 95% of All Hair Loss

As we get older, both men and women experience some hair loss. It is a normal part of the
aging process. Androgentic Alopecia often runs in families and affects some people more

than others. In men it is often referred to as Male Pattern Baldness. It is characterized by a

receding hair line and baldness on the top of head. Women, on the other hand, don't go
entirely bald even if their hair loss is severe. Instead, hair loss is spread out evenly over their
entire scalp.
Hormones play the dominant role when talking about Androgenetic Alopecia. Simple put,
both men and women produce testosterone. Testosterone can be converted to
dihydrotestosterone (DHT) with the aid of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. DHT shrinks hair
follicles causing the membranes in the scalp to thicken, become inelastic and restrict blood
flow. This causes the hair follicles to atrophy. As a result, when a hair does fall out, it is not
replaced.
Needless to say, men produce more testosterone than women and experience more hair loss.

Other Causes of Hair loss

While Androgenetic Alopecia is the number one reason why individuals experience hair loss,
it is not the only one. Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, ringworm and fungal
infections can cause hair loss. Certain medications such as blood thinners, gout medication,
birth control pills and too much vitamin A can cause sudden or abnormal hair loss as can
following a crash diet, sudden hormonal changes, chemotherapy and radiation.
Emotional stress, pregnancy, or surgery can also cause our hair to fall out and is usually not
noticed until 3-4 months after the stressful event has taken place. Stress can cause a slowing
of new hair growth because a larger number of hair follicles enter into the resting phase and
no new hair growth is experienced.
Another way in which individuals experience hair loss is due to mechanical stressors on the
hair and scalp. Wearing pigtails, cornrows or tight rollers that end up pulling on the hair can
scar the scalp and cause permanent hair loss. Hair products such as hot oil treatments and
chemicals used for permanents can cause inflammation to the hair follicles which can also
result in scarring and hair loss.
Note: Hair loss may be the early warning sign of a more serious disorder such as lupus or
diabetes, so it is important to talk to your doctor.

Hair Loss Recommendations for Wellness

If you are taking prescription medications, talk to your doctor and find out if your
medication is contributing to your hair loss.
Avoid mega-doses of vitamin A. Too much vitamin A can cause your hair to fall out.
Exercise, do yoga, meditate or find some other practice that will help to reduce your
anxiety and stress levels.
If you are a women, have your female hormones tested. If they are imbalanced, talk to
your health care provider about bio-identical hormone replacements.
If you wear pigtails, cornrows, use a curling iron, hair dryer or hot rollers, try
changing your hair style to one that puts less pressure and stress on your hair and
scalp.

If hot oil treatments or chemicals such as those used in permanents are causing
inflammation to the scalp, discontinue their use, or reduce the number of times you
are using them.
Use gentle shampoos and conditioners to avoid any unnecessary damage to your hair.
In men, herbs such as saw palmetto and licorice root help block the formation of
DHT. The same holds true for supplementation with zinc. As an added benefit, studies
show that these supplements can also help prevent prostate enlargement.
Massage your scalp with rosemary oil in an olive oil base. Both rosemary oil and
massaging the scalp can stimulate the circulation in the scalp and promote hair
growth.
Again, if you are experiencing hair loss, check with your doctor to ensure that a more
serious disorder isn't the cause.

month I have started eating properly and I am taking multivitamin daily.Everyday I
loose 20 strands and when I wash my hair I loose 40-50 strands. Please help me
kokila ()
A: It is perfectly normal to lose some strands of hair everyday. 40-50 strands a day is normal.
Yes, dieting does lead to hair loss, but since you have stopped dieting and are eating well
again, you should not have a problem. Seafood is excellent for hair, so if you enjoy fish, eat it
regularly.

Q: I have a anxiety disorder which is a kind of psychological disorder. Now because of

that i have lost and am loosing quiet a lot of hair. I know that my hair are falling
because of this disorder. I wanted to ask that if in case i recover from this disorder, will
my hair regrow, if i take extremely good care of my hair. I have heard that hair fall due
to stress gets regrowth easily within a year. i wanted to know how much this is true.
Ankit ()
A: Hair fall caused due to stress will reduce once stress levels come down. Look after your
hair and your health, eat well, exercise and generally lead a healthy lifestyle, and your hair
loss will subside. If you have started balding, the hair may not grow back in the bald sections.

Q: Hello. I came across the hair faq from a search engine and i thought you would be
the perfect person to ask my question. You might have to read a bit to read my
explanation but i would greatly appreciate your help. I am 19 yrs old and a male, i
started using hair styling gel in my hair about 4 years ago but after a year or two my
hair started coming out. Every time i showered and dried my hair i noticed a lot of hair
on the the floor. My dad kept telling me it was falling out because of the gel, so i
stopped using it over a year ago.

Months later, I still noticed alot of hair coming out while drying my hair. I also had a lot
of bumps on my head that were itchy with a lot of flakes. Assuming it is dandruff i used
selsun blue, head and shoulders, t-gel maximum strength to get rid of it. I also used
nizoral but it didnt work either, now im wonderng if it is actually dandruff or something
else.
My scalp is always oily with (acne like)bumps. This continues into my forehead. I used
acne medication on my forehead and and was able to control the acne in that area
most of the time. The oil in my scalp comes over into my forehead, (i think) causing
bumps on my forehead (acne). I hate the oil on my scalp and i wasnt sure if it too was
caused by using gel in my hair years ago.
Shampoo and water doesn't seem to mix with the oil on my scalp and it is diffult to
wash every morning. But 6 months ago I started to use bar soap instead of shampoo
and i was able to clean my scalp and have a less oily scalp. Now, if i dont use bar soap
one day to clean my hair, i start to get a really oily scalp, my hair falls out, and alot of
acne forms on my forehead. I have to use bar soap every day on my scalp or it will take
me a couple days to get rid the the oil and acne that will form on my scalp and
forehead as a result of forgetting to wash my scalp with bar soap just once.
I have tried to describe my problem to my doctor but he doesnt understand. He gave
me Nizoral but it didn't do anything. I dont believe this is a normal condition, do you?
Do you have any suggestions? Also, should i never use gel in my hair again? Sorry
this was so long but any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.
darvin ()
A: Your scalp seems to be very oily. If you find that bar soap suits you, stick to that. Make
sure it is not a very harsh soap though, because at times using something excessively harsh
can cause your scalp to produce more oil, to compensate. Use a gentle soap, and keep your
forehead clean at all times. Millions of people across the globe wash their hair daily, and if
your hair needs a daily wash, go ahead. Don't look for alternate solutions, since you've
already found that washing your hair daily with bar soap helps. In a few years the oiliness on
your scalp will reduce.
This doesn't have anything to do with gel. Basically, when one applies gel, it should be
washed off the next day. Since you wash your hair daily, there is no problem with applying gel
every once in a while. Avoid daily use of gel.

Niyati ()
A: Wash your hair twice a week. Don't apply conditioner or oil to your scalp if your scalp is
oily. Condition just hair strands once a week. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo once a week and
a regular shampoo once a week. Try Selsun shampoo for dandruff.

Try taking up meditation. Certain yoga asanas, especially inverted asans, help. Get

also want to look into other options like Rogain, hair weaving, hair transplant etc.

ago, when I first dyed it alot of hair fell out, and everysince I dyed it hair has been

help me
John ()
A: Colouring your hair dries it out. As you have been colouring your hair, make sure you apply
conditioner after every wash. Don't apply conditioner to the scalp - just to the hair. Also, you
could try applying egg yolk to your hair once a week. Whip it, mix it with curd, olive or coconut
oil, and wash off after half an hour. This nourishes hair.

Q: Hello. I have had long beautiful hair... in fact there has been so much, when I
occasionally get highlights it takes hours to do. I went three weeks ago and the guy
who did it took 4 hours with the dye in my hair. I think he used different chemicals or
something and now my hair has been falling out at a crazy rate. Every time I wash I
have hundreds of hairs fall out. I can feel the difference. It is awful. My first question is
what do you think happened and will it grow back? I am absolutely devastated this has
happened to me.
Simone ()
A: Always go to a trusted person when applying chemicals to your hair. It is possible that the
chemical he applied was too harsh, which damaged and dried your hair. Deep condition your
hair regularly. Try Osmose, L'Oreal. Steam your hair after applying conditioner or oil, so it
gets well absorbed. Also, invest in a leave-in conditioner so your hair is always well
moisturised. You could try applying egg to your hair once a week - it's very good. Whip up 2-3
eggs, depending on your hair lenght, and apply to your hair. You could mix it with curd if you
like. Leave on for half an hour and wash off with cool water. Avoid heat treatments like blowdrying, ironing, for some time.

commercial conditioners suit different people. L'Oreal's Osmose is very good.

A: Your diet is the prime cause, and once you get your diet under control, your hairfall will
reduce. Also, make sure you eat a multivitamin. Late night shifts definitely do take a toll on
your body, and you need to be extra careful and extra particular with regard to getting enough
rest and eating enough, becuase your body is under strain as it is, and when you skip meals,
you are only doubling the strain. Please take care of your health. Drink plenty of juices, water,

Shailesh (Mumbai, India)
A: It is possible that your scalp is oily, which is why you are getting boils on your scalp. Try
using a shampoo for oily hair, don't apply oil to your hair, and never apply conditioner or egg
to your scalp. Try this for a month, and if it doesn't help you should show your scalp to a

Q: I have normal hair fall - naturally. But since couple of months I noticed that my hair
would easily just come out if I tried pulling it out. There is a bit of itchy ness how ever
what amazes me is the way it just came out when I tried pulling my hair - this now a
very bad habit and I tend to pull out loads and loads of it on a daily basis. WOuld you
be able to acess this problem - thanks

Putchu (Hyderabad, India)

A: When you say your hair comes out when you pull it, are you pulling your hair using force,
or are you just gently pulling out hair that has already fallen, but is just entangled in the rest of
your hair? If you use force to pull hair, it doesn't seem to be a beauty issue. It is more a
question of a bad habit that needs to be broken, like thumbsucking or nail biting. Often, these
habits are hard to break, and even though you realise that you are causing yourself harm, you
are unable to stop yourself. Tie your hair in a plait. This will discourage you running your
fingers through your hair and pulling it out. Also, often, if we don't comb hair regularly, our hair
stays tangled, and hair that may have fallen stays tangled, and comes out only when we run
our fingers through our hair and gently pull out these fallen strands. It is normal to shed 80 90 strands of hair a day. If this is the case with you, there is no cause for concern.

Sunny (Mumbai, India)
A: Kaya is very good. Your son should go in for the 4 session package - I doubt if he needs to
go in for the lifetime guarantee package. 4 sessions should be enough to drastically reduce
hair growth. Also, your son can make a decision after taking the patch test plus one session,
so if he finds that his hair has all grown back, he could consider doing the lifetime guarantee
package. If he finds a substantial difference after one session, he need not go in for more
sessions, or he can opt for the 4 session package. They will always try to sell you the lifetime
package, but let your son decide for himself, after one session.

Q: Hi, I am 29 yrs female. I am in Singapore for last 3 years. For these 3 years, I am
facing seveare hair fall. Intitally I did not notice it much as I had weighty and bouncy

relax. But for last 6 months, I could notice it as my frontal hairline is broadned and
there is overall thinning of hair over scalp. I have recently been to India and have
visitied Dr Batra's clinic. I have started their medicine as well. I am very tensed

because of hair fall. Can you suggest some yoga exercises to stop this hair fall? Also, i
am applying olive oil once in a week and then wrap hot towel for 15 minutes. Is it Ok to
do so? Appreciate if you could advice on this. Also, how much time actually these
home remedies take to stop hair loss.
Urvashi (Singapore)

A: Essentially, one of the root causes of hair fall is stress. So, if you are stressed, it is very
likely that this is contributing to hairfall, and external remedies may not help. Continue
steaming hair with olive oil, it is good for hair. Also, consider taking up yoga or meditation to
relax.

A: As I am not a homeopathic doctor I will not be able to give you accurate information
regarding this. The doctors at the clinic will let you know. You can try out homeopathy
medication to see if it will help - at least there will be no side effects. It should help arrest
hairfall, but I doubt if it can really help with your dandruff. They will let you know if they feel
homeopathy will not help.

Q: I am 25 years old and my hair falls drastically. I had a very think and bouncy hair 5
years back and now it is very thin. About 1/6 of the hair has been lost. I am taking

mixture and apply. I use henna conditioner because one of my skin specialists told me
that due to egg your hair would fall because u apply protein directly to your hair. Then
onwards I stopped applying egg to my hair. Now i condition with henna once a month. I
apply oil the previous might and take bath in the morning. This too did not help.
Plssssssss help.
Rohini (Indore, India)
A: Nizoral is strong, so don't use it three times a week. In fact, shampoo is detergent, so if you
shampoo so often, you should make sure that you use a very mild shampoo, suitable for daily
use. Also, now use Nizoral just once a week - and no more. You could also try just rinsing
your hair once a week, and shampooing it twice. Also, don't use henna conditioner. Henna
makes the hair soft initially, but it makes hair brittle, leading to breakage. Apply conditioner
just to the hair, not to the scalp. Don't comb wet hair and untangle knots very gently. Apply oil
to your hair once a week, and wash off after one hour. Wash hair with cold water as far as
possible.

almond oil and one ayurvedic oil to my hair. and also curd to my hair.
Pinki (New Delhi, India)
A: You could continue applying the almond oil and curd. You should consider Dr Batras
homeopathy clinic for help with hairfall, as they will prescribe only safe, homeopathy

medicines. They also have a powerful brand name and will not mess around with steriods like
some homepathy doctors may, and as such, are reliable. You could also apply egg to your

from the front of the head.

Jyoi (Mumbai, India)
A: Don't go in for any more chemical treatments until your hair gets back to normal. All kinds
of straigtening is harmful for the hair, but less harmful are the Hair Rebonding and Xtenso
treatments. Avoid blowdrying your hair, and apply conditioner regularly to the hair - apply to
the ends, not to the scalp. Try applying egg to your hair once a week. Losing 3/4th of your
hair however is pretty drastic. You should also visit a doctor to rule out any medical reason for
hair loss. Make sure your diet is proper and that you exercise regularly. Taking up yoga can

Q: Besides egg application,do you have any other treatment for hair loss?
Danielle (London, UK)
A: Egg application only really helps if hair is falling due to brittleness, caused by dry hair,
chemical damage etc. Egg is a very rich conditioner and it nourishes the hair. However, if hair
is fallling due to other reasons such as medical problems, stress, etc, then egg doesn't really
help. Then the medical problem needs to be first tackled. Hair could also fall due to lack of
certain nutrients in the body, in which case a balanced diet is essential. Read these 2 articles

doesnt cause as much damage. Try doing it every three months or longer, especially becuase
you are just 20. It is best if you highlight your hair, because then your hair will still look red,
and you will be causing less damage since you are not colouring your entire hair. In addition,
even when your original hair grows out, the roots will not look bad since your hair is
highlighted and not dyed. You need to give your hair time to recover between colour sessions,
and you can still do that now, when your hair is not grey. When your hair is grey you will have
to constantly keep touching it up anyway, so let your hair recover between colour sessions.

Q: Hello i have very thin hairs since my childhood. i am 20 female though i have quiet

due to which my scalp is exposed in only certain part of my head. Like only in that part
my hair get parted and my scalp is exposed so how can i recover the lost part. Please
answer both of my question. My dad is bald man while my mom also have very silky
thin hair what do u say ??? Please reply me..

A: Hair is also an indicator of your health. Just make sure you eat a balanced diet and get
enough regular exericse. Try taking up yoga. Inverted asanas will help with hair growth. Don't
brush or comb hair when wet, as it will break. When brushing hair, bend forward from the
waist and brush backwards to forward.

Q: Somebody told me to shave my head often to slow down the problem of Falling
hairs. So i did, and shaved my head thrice a week for a "year" But instead of getting rid
of the problem i found out that my hairline has Receeded considerably, might be
because of wearing a baseball cap almost Every day for atleast 10 hrs. What should i
do?
Gurmeet (Punjab, India)

A: Stop wearing the cap all the time, as this causes hair to weaken. Shaving essentially
thickens hair growth, but cannot prevent you from balding. Men can look good even if they
have a receeding hairline. Read this article, The Bald and the Beautiful, for what you can do.
Although I have recommened wearing a cap to hide baldness in the article, you should not
wear one very often.

Q: Hi i m 22 years old and i have ben using hair products such as hair gel for almost 5
years. My hair is very curly and it gets frizzy if i dont use hair gel. But lately i have
noticed that my hair is falling out and has gone very very thin. My mum keeps telling
me that the hair gel is causing me to go bold is that true? Can hair gel make you go
bold?
Barbara (New York, USA)
A: Although hair gel companies swear that gel is completely safe, I know of enough people
that used hair gel very often, and have lost a lot of their hair. True, there are various reasons
for hair loss, and it may be hard to pinpoint one particular cause but it is possible that gel is
not too good for the scalp or hair. Instead of using gel, why don't you use de-frizz products
and then style your hair. If you don't have time for styling, apply a de-frizz serum and tie your
hair into a ponytail when it is still wet. When you untie your hair it will not be as frizzy. You
could also apply 2-3 drops of oil mixed with water to damp hair, to counter frizz. Use gel every
once in a while instead of using it very regularly.

Q: I have just straightened my hair....and it is falling a lot...help!

Mary (Goa, India)
A: Hair does fall after straightening, because hair gets very dry and brittle. The next time you
wash your hair, apply a mixture of egg and curd to your hair. Leave it on for around half an
hour, and shampoo it off with cold water. This is a great conditioner. Also, follow up with
conditioner for double conditioning. Try L'Oreal Elvive conditioner (and shampoo too if you
like, but conditioning is what you really need). Try deep conditioning your hair often as well,
by
applying
oil
and
giving
your
hair
steam.
Never rub conditioner into your scalp, and concentrate conditioner on your hair ends. Just
remember that at this time your hair is crying out for moisture, and it needs conditioning. Trim

your hair regularly to keep split ends at bay. Don't colour your hair - two chemical treatments
will be harsher. Also, use a very, very mild shampoo and don't shampoo very often. Twice a
week at the most.

%.application of mehandi has made me loss my hair. i have curly hair. i dont use egg
due to religion problem.can u plz help. will d hair regrow. i m in depression.
Shefali (Mumbia, India)
A: First of all, don't be depressed as this will cause more hair fall. Hair loss due to telogen
effilium is caused when a lot of new hair is growing all at once, pushing out the old hair leading to excessive hair fall. It does not cause complete baldness and will stabilise on its
own. There are various causes to this, one of them being low iron content. You appear to
have moderate anemia, so you should perhaps first increase your iron intake. Stress is
another cause, so try and relax. Take up meditation and yoga, it should help. Don't apply
mehendi, it dries out your hair. Apply curd to your hair to condition it before a hair wash, and
use a mild shampoo. Also, when you apply oil, give yourself steam as well to help the oil
penetrate the strands.

Manish (Mumbai, India)
A: Shampoo every alternate day instead of shampooing daily, and make sure you use a very
mild shampoo suitable for daily use. Scrub your hair gently while shampooing to increase
circulation to the scalp. Eat more Vitamin A, and B Complex supplements. Eat more fish,
coconut and eggs. If hairfall is due to stress, you need to first tackle your stress before
anything can be done. Try taking up meditation and yoga. Upside-down yoga poses which

A: Yes, dying hair is definitely a cause for hair fall. You should use a non-ammonia, nonperoxide hair colour. A great brand to use is Clairol Nice n Easy. Make sure you don't apply
the colour to your scalp, and apply egg to your hair once a week.

called scalpe which to some extent helps in dandruff problem can i use it like a
ordinary shampoo once a week ? pleasee help me i had great thick hair before today
even my confidence is down because of my hair fall.
Ronan (Mumbai, India)
A: Don't put henna unless you need it to cover grey hair. Otherwise, egg is a great
conditioner, and so is olive oil. Henna is a good conditioner too, but it makes hair brittle and
easily breakable in the long run, after prolonged use. Use a very mild shampoo for washing
your hair, don't use soap. Petalca is a very gentle, herbal shampoo. Any shampoo will do, as
long as it is very mild and gentle. It will keep your scalp and hair clean. Anti-dandruff
shampoos are harsh and should preferably not be used more than twice a week. At times
dandruff is also caused due to an oily scalp. You need to see what is causing your dandruff. If
your scalp is oily, perhaps you can minimise your use of oil. Stress, diet, sleep, all contribute
to hairfall, so you need make sure you are eating and sleeping well too, and that you are not
taking on undue stress.

adviced to apply olive oil every night but that is too much of a hassle. How often
should we apply oil?
Pranav (Mumbai, India)
A: Applying oil just once a week is enough. Be sure you apply it to the scalp. This works if
dandruff is caused due to dryness of the scalp, but if this is not the cause for your dryness,

applying oil may not help that much. Try Selsun medicated anti-dandruff shampoo, and don't
use anti-dandruff shampoos everday as they are a little harsh. Twice or thrice a week should
be enough. Every once in a while change your shampoo to prevent buildup, or alternate
shampoos.

Nancy (USA)
A: It's surprising that you can see your scalp! First, make sure you steam your hair after
applying oil so the oil penetrates the hair fibre. Also, apply egg yolk to your hair for extra
conditioning before each wash. Never apply conditioner to your scalp, only to the hair,
concentrating on the hair ends. Trim your hair regularly, just quarter of an inch from the
bottom every couple of months, to keep hair healthy and get rid of split ends. Change to
another shampoo, perhaps this does not suit your hair. Use a shampoo for dry hair. Also, try
Redken Anti-snap treatment.

Q: I am 23Yrs.old unmarried lady & I am getting bald on the front as well on the
sides.what precautions can i take to stop its continuance & how can I get regrowth of
the hair I lost?
Dolly (Goa, India)
A: If you tie your hair in a tight ponytail or plait, it causes hair to break from the front, so stop
wearing your hair so tight and leave it loose. Alternatively if the loss is sudden, you could be
suffering from PCOS, of which hair loss is sometimes the only symptom. Hair loss could also
be caused by stress, recovery from an illness, antibiotics, anemia... There are numerous
reasons. You could consider visiting a doctor. Remember that losing 70 to 80 hairs a day is
completely normal, but you should not be going bald as you are saying.

with COOL water after half an hour. Do this before EVERY wash. Also, condition your hair
after shampooing. Apply conditioner concentrating on the ends, and don't apply it on the

Q: How good is henna as a conditioner for your hair. Does it arrest hair fail and
greying?
Monalisa (Mumbai)
A: No, henna does not arrest hair fall or greying. It does impart a reddish colour to the hair,
effectively covering the greys. It is not the best conditioner for hair. Egg yolk is possibly the
best natural conditioner for hair. Whip it, apply it to your hair, perhaps mixed with oil if you so
desire, and wash it off after half an hour. Make sure you use cold water, or your hair will start
cooking! If you would like to use henna for grey hair coverage, make sure you add egg to the
henna mixture.

A: Why is your hair turning red? Are you using mehendi? If yes, stop doing so. Hair also
lightens when you have split ends. The only remedy for split ends is to get them chopped off.
Go for a trim three times a year, and get just the ends chopped off if you are trying to grow
your hair. Stop blowdrying your hair for a while. Egg is an excellent conditioner. Apply egg to
your hair and shampoo with cold water after half an hour.

very dry and damaged and looks like cotton. I have curly hair so the more tangles there
are the more hair dropping and looks thin. Can you please tell me a way out? i am very
worried...
Catherine (Mumbai, India)
A: 1. Wet your hair everyday when taking a shower. Curly hair longs for moisture.
2. Apply conditioner after wetting your hair everyday, or a couple of times a week, to the ends
of
your
hair
not
the
scalp.
3. As your hair is dry, try to shampoo your hair just once a week.
4. Oil your hair once a week, before you shampoo. You can also apply curd or egg (whipped).
5. Buy and use a wide toothed comb. Never brush your curls.

6. Comb hair gently in the shower after applying conditioner, to undo the tangles.
7. Don't pile hair on top of head when shampooing or when washing. Just let it hang loose at
the
back.
8. Trim your hair regularly and make sure you have no split-ends.

Mihir (Mumbai, India)
A: First of all, stop thinking that you will grow bald because your father is bald. The more you
believe your own baldness is almost inevitable, the more likely you are to grow bald, so stop
expecting or anticipating it. Hair loss is also caused by stress, and keeping stress at bay and
looking after your hair will help. Also, try steaming your hair after applying coconut oil, to
ensure
that
the

One of the best things you can do is to take up yoga. Inverted posture asanas increase

Q: Hi, I used to have healthy wavy hair. However of late i'm facing rapid hair fall which

good shampoos in the market which are also mild. I have tried lots of shampoos like
sunsilk, pantene, ultra doux and botanica but nothing seems to work. However i find
the ultra doux conditioner to be very useful. Could you advise me on the shampoos?
Also will it help if i get a oil massage and hair wash in the parlour? if so, how often
should i go for it?
Anuja (Mumbai, India)
A: Yes, an oil massage in the parlour would help because they massage the oil well into your
scalp, and then follow up with steam so the oil penetrates your hair. Once a week is ideal.
Over a period of time you will notice an improvement in hair texture. Take your own shampoo
and conditioner at the parlour, and they should charge you less for a hair wash. Or, you can
also just get an oil massage and shampoo your hair yourself when you return home, as an
economical
option.
You could try using Ayur Coconut shampoo or Petalca. These are mild and herbal.
Concentrate conditioner on ends, and don't apply it to the scalp. Similarly, use very little

shampoo, and concentrate shampoo on the scalp and just let it run over the ends of your hair.
Your hair doesn't have to be completely lathered in shampoo like in the advertisements!
Get hair ends trimmed regularly.

speed then I'll loss my all hair one day. Please tell me any remedy. Thanks!
Ritu (Gujarat, India)
A: A certain amount of hairfall -around 80 to 100 hair strands a day - is completely normal.
First, you need to find out why your hair is falling. If it is breaking easily becuase it is dry and
fragile, you need to deep condition it and oil it regularly along with steam. If this is not the
cause, your hair may be falling due to stress, tensions or incorrect diet. Eat more Vitamin A,
and B Complex supplements. Eat more fish and coconut. If hairfall is due to stress, you need
to first tackle your stress before anything can be done. Try taking up meditation and yoga.
Upside-down yoga poses which send circulation to the head are very good for combating

If hairfall has suddenly increased dramatically, you may need to see a doctor, as sudden
hairfall could be a symptom of some other disease.

Seetharaman (Madras, India)
A: One of the main causes for hairfall is tension and stress. No matter how strong your hair, it
will still fall if you are very stressed out. Eat a balanced diet, eat plenty of fish, coconut,
Vitamin A and B-Complex supplements. Get an oil massage once a week. This rejuvenates

A: Conditioner helps reduce hair breakage due to dryness, because it gives a boost of
moisture to the hair. Egg is a great conditioner and fortifier, apply it to your hair once a week

hair, and if it is conditioned, it shines more. For a natural conditioner, apply egg before

A: It is totally normal to experience hair loss after giving birth or after nursing. Some women
also experience hair loss after stopping birth control pills. This is because all these factors
cause a change in your hormonal balance, preventing or reducing hairfall during pregnancy.
As a result this 'backlog' of hair that should have fallen out but didn't, falls out now. Hairfall will
gradually decrease on its own.

Q: My hair doesn't break but the whole hair comes out from the roots. Please help me.
Tehsin (UAE)
A: Oil your hair once a week, and make sure you steam your hair so that the oil penetrates
the strands. Massage your scalp after applying oil for at least fifteen minutes. 40 to 80 hair
falling a day is completely normal, so there is no need to worry. If hair is falling from a
particular spot on your head, or if a lot more hair is falling than just 40 to 80 strands, you
should you see a doctor.

Q: My hair is dry/dull and lifeless, and it falls a lot. I live in Finland and since winter is
approaching, my scalp feels more dryer and hair falls easily. I used to have thick hair
but not now. I read that using oil is beneficial to the hair. What kind of oil should I use
for dry scalp and for preventing hair loss? When applying oil onto the hair, do I also
apply to the scalp as well?
Felicia (Finland)
A: Coconut, olive and almond oil are all very good for the hair. Yes, you should massage the
oil on your scalp as well, and should steam your hair after applying oil so the oil penetrates
each strand. Read this article for more tips on Preventing Hair Fall.

Q: I have started excercising (going to the gym ) for the past couple of months and my
hair is falling at an alarming rate since then. My hair fall is so much that it now looks
very very thin . I just want to know if excercise could increase hair fall and is there a
way to stop this falling and strengthen the roots and grow more hair so that it becomes
thick ? Pleeeeeeeeease help!!
Mohana (Mumbai, India)
A: A certain amount of hair fall - around 40 to 80 strands a day, is perfectly normal, but any
sudden increase or decrease in hairfall should be looked into. Hair breakage is generally due
to dry hair, and the only treatment is regular oiling and conditioning. Hair fall from the roots
resulting in a visible reduction in the amount of hair could be evaluated by a doctor. You could
try to stop this hair fall yourself by shampooing your hair a little more regularly due to more
sweat on the scalp after you have started working out. Use a very mild herbal shampoo. Also,
you should also increase your nutritional intake. Eat fish and coconut. Trim your hair regularly.
Avoid any chemical treatment for now, and avoid blowdrying it till your hairfall stops. Do not
tie your hair too tight while working out. This also causes breakage.

Hema (Mumbai, India)
A: A certain amount of hair fall is totally normal, so don't worry. Make sure your diet is
adequate. Increase your protein intake. Eating more fish and coconut also helps. Trim your
hair regularly so you have no split ends. If your hair is dry, shampoo less often. Try
shampooing once in five days or so, or use a very gentle, herbal shampoo. Try Petalca.

Q: When I comb my hair it breaks easily. What can I do about this?

Seema (Mumbai, India)

A: Oil your hair once a week, and wash off after half an hour. Apply egg and curd to your hair
once every two weeks. While shampooing, avoid piling your hair on top of your head as this
causes tangles. Do not comb your hair when it is wet, as wet hair is prone to snapping. Comb
your hair very gently so it doesnt snap. First, remove the tangles from the ends of your hair,
and then comb your hair from the entire lenght. Condition your hair after every wash. Read

Lakshmi (Mumbai, India)
A: You should apply olive oil to your hair once a week, and also make it a point to apply
conditioner after every shampoo. If your hair looks dead, you need to style it a little. Highlights
add a lot of life to hair, so you should consider getting your hair highlighted. To add body to
hair, look for a shampoo that is especially formulated to increase thickness and add volume.

Q: Hi, Does honey applied to hair turn the hair grey ?

Preetha (Mumbai, India)

A: No it does not. That's just a myth. Hair turns white not due to any application of any
substance to it, but because pigment producing cells that provide colour to the hair, have
stopped doing their job. Thus even if you apply the harshest of chemicals, colours or bleach
to your hair, your hair could turn dry and develop split ends and even fall out, but this is not
what will cause it to turn white. In any case, it is not that good an idea to apply honey to the
hair, when there are a plethora of other natural products that are more beneficial like oil, curd,
egg etc.

Q: I am only 19 years old, but my hair is becoming very thin. What is the reason for
this?
Anjali (India)
A: Look after your hair, and your health. Are you dieting? If yes, that could be the cause for
hairfall. Make sure you are getting adequate nutrition. Massage your scalp with warm oil once
a week, and wash off gently after at least half an hour. Trim your hair regularly, and keep it
free from dandruff. Use gentle shampoos. Egg and curd are both excellent for the hair, so you
could try applying them after you have applied oil. Do not keep curd for more than ten
minutes, if you are prone to getting a cold. Inverted yoga poses such as Adho Mukha
Svanasana and Chakrasana should be of help, as they increase the flow of blood to the head,
and strengthen your hair roots.

hairbath. pls tell me what to do to reduce my hairfall and keep it more healthy. is there
any way to strengthen the hair roots, because my hair is very soft. thanks.
Priya (Mumbai, India)
A: It is very normal for hair to fall more frequently after delivery, however, 2 years after
delivery is another matter entirely. A deficiency of vitamins B, iodine and iron in women
causes hairfall, so increase your intake of these vitamins. Eat honey, curds, nuts, fruits and
vegetables. However, it is normal for a few strands of hair to fall everyday, but if you feel the
hairfall has increased, you should start being more particular. Apply castor oil to your hair; it is
very beneficial for hair loss. Massage your scalp frequently to encourage circulation.

six months my hair has been falling heavily. My hair is very long. I oil my hair regularly,
and wash it twice a week. Every time I comb my hair, a large amount falls out.
Saraf (Safat, Middle East)
A: Major cause of hair loss could be some prolonged illness, drastic fall in blood haemoglobin

oiling your hair as before. Your hair should stop falling as much within a month or so.

Q: My hair falls a lot. They are very dry. I cannot even leave them open. Please help me.

shoulder length, to increase body.

men. You could consult Positive Health Clinic. 2. You could also go in for hair transplant. The
hair from the back of your head is transplanted to where you have started balding. This is a
permanent procedure. As long as you do not have blood clotting or hypertension problems,
You could go in for the transplant.

Q: My hair falls a lot. It is dry and is greying. I cannot even leave it open. Please

A: Give your head an oil massage at least once a week. Leave the oil on for about an hour,
and wash off. Apply curd and egg to your hair when possible. Use a mild herbal shampoo like
Petalca.

Q: I am 28 yrs old. My hair is very scanty and I have lost a lot of hair in the past few

A: Curd is excellent for the hair, and so is egg. Whip the egg and curd together, and apply the
mixture to your hair. Wash off after half an hour. If you apply conditioner, make sure you
NEVER apply it to the scalp. Conditioner should just be applied to the ends of the hair. Trim
your hair regularly to avoid split ends. Don't comb hair when wet, as it breaks easily. Be
gentle.

Q: I have a severe hair fall problem. I am anaemic. My hemeoglobin is 11.5. What

should I do to prevent hair fall? I have a lot of grey hair as well. I am 32 years old.
Pushpa (New York)
A: Apply a mixture of egg, curd and olive oil to your hair once a week, massage well and
shampoo off after an hour. Almond and castor oil also helps prevent hair fall. Fish is excellent
for hair - so if you are non-vegetarian, you should consider eating more of it. Take iron
supplements to increase your haemoglobin count.

Steps
1. Try to identify when the hair loss started and if you changed anything with
your hair. For example if you started straightening it or if you started
applying lots of mousse. It is likely that this could be the reason. If you find
it was due to the use of these things then stop using them.
2. Stick to one shampoo or shower gel. If it is repeatedly changed it could
cause damage to your hair as shampoos aren't natural, you would be
adding more and more chemical products in your hair which could damage
them and cause them to fall out.
3. Oiling the hair also helps with coconut oil for example. By doing this, when
you go out the pollution in the environment won't stick straight onto your
hair and damage it. It will stick to the oil instead which can be washed off
when you get home.
4. Wash your hair regularly, unclean hair could contain lots of damaging
things. Frequent washing can help keep hair clean and healthy.
5. Wash your hair with warm to normal temperature water. Too much hot
water can also damage the hair.
6. Try and reduce stress or anxiety that is getting to you. Tension and
anxiety do not help as you will be so worried your body won't be mentally
healthy so this will lead to physical deterioration too which includes hair
loss.
7. Do daily scalp massages as it will increase blood flow in the scalp, sending
it to the hair follicles to help stimulate growth.

[edit] Tips

Try not to use straighteners, curlers or other chemical products such as

dyes excessively, these can damage your hair if used too frequently.
Oiling your hair can help keep hair healthier.
Stick to one shampoo or gel.

As you get older, your hair gets weaker so don't be too worried if a few
strands of hair falling occasionally.
Try to relax and have an optimistic view on things. A healthy mind leads to
a healthy body.
Doing 'Headstand' pose of yoga for about a minute daily reduces the hair
fall. But please consult your doctor before doing this pose.

Your hair enhances your overall personality and also reflects your health. But, healthy hair
and scalp needs proper care right from the beginning. If you neglect your hair for long, it
might turn brittle with split-ends and also cause dandruff. You may even experience untimely
hair loss if you don't take timely precautions.
Studies indicate that in 95 percent cases, hair loss is genetic, but many other factors such as
diet, general health, vitamin and hormonal deficiencies, overuse of hair dye, physical and
emotional stress also lead to uncontrolled hair loss. However, it is possible to control most of
these factors that lead to untimely hair fall among individuals.
Though hair loss is not a life-threatening situation, but it may imply internal health problems.
Besides, it may also spoil the level of self-confidence in the long run. As there is no
permanent cure for hair loss, but it is possible to take some preventive measures to ensure
healthy and shining hair. Some of these tips are listed below:
1) Role of Diet
A nutritious diet, which contains all essential vitamins and minerals, helps in minimizing the
hair loss. Therefore, you must include green, leafy vegetables, raw oats, and whole grain
cereals, eggs, dates, and raisins in your daily food regime. As the hair is made of protein, you
are advised to stick to protein-rich diet, such as calves liver, brewer's yeast, and wheat germ.
These foods also contain Vitamin B, which is an important nutrient for hair. Outer coverings
of potatoes, cucumbers, and green and red peppers are high in silica, which is essential to
maintain the beauty and strength of your hair. Vitamin E also promotes hair growth and
reduces hair fall. A person may experience hair fall due to thyroid dysfunction also.
Therefore, you must include foods, which are good sources of vitamin A and iodine.
2) Washing routine
Your hair cleansing routine largely depends on your hair-type. People having oily hair may
need to wash their hair regularly, while people having dry hair can wash it twice a week.
Never use too hot or too cold water to wash your hair. While cleaning or massaging your
hair, you should always use your fingertips and not your nails to gently clean your scalp.
3) Proper combing
You should use a wide-tooth comb to untangle your hair and comb in downward direction.
Using a wooden or tortoise shell comb is a better idea than using a rubber comb. Avoid
combing wet hair, as wet hair can easily break.
4) Drying your hair

If possible, allow your hair to dry naturally. Avoid using blow dryer as its heat can damage
your hair, and also make it look coarse and lifeless.
5) Using proper conditioner
Protect your hair from sudden environmental changes, while going out to a beach or a pool.
You must use an effective conditioner as it protects your hair from the sun, chlorine, and sea
water. You should also wear a protective hat or a cap to avoid overexposing your hair to the
sun, salt or chlorinated water and pollution.
6) Use of shampoo and conditioner
Always choose a simple formula shampoo, which costs you less money. Remember, the basic
purpose of a shampoo is to wash away the dirt and the oil. Therefore, use a milder shampoo,
which is less expensive and more beneficial for your hair. Apply a good quality conditioner
once you clean your hair with the shampoo, but do not over-condition your hair.
7) Choose a comfortable hair style
Choose a hair style that truly reflects your style and taste while significantly enhances your
personality. Often traditional hair styling products are rich of alcohol and other harsh
chemicals, which may again harm your hair.
8) Knowing your sleeping pattern helps control hair loss
Comb your hair gently while going to bed. You should also gently remove all bands or clips
used during the day. Do you know that your sleeping pattern also affects the life and health of
your hair? People who are restless even while they are sleeping may actually end up breaking
their hair. So, if you belong to the restless community of sleepers, you should use s satin
pillowcase, which allows your hair to move smoothly and thus cause less breakage.
9) Limit the use of alcohol and smoking products
Reduce alcohol consumption and also avoid using it on your hair. Avoid using hair care
products that contain alcohol. This is because alcohol can make your hair look dry, brittle and
prone to breakage.
10) Avoid using harsh chemicals
Certain harsh chemicals such as permanent hair color and perms can also affect the health
and growth of your hair. Therefore, you must avoid coloring your hair more than once every
2-4 months.

Causes of Gray Hair

Gray hair is supposedly a sign of wisdom. Well, Gray hair is caused when the follicle is unable to add
color to the hair or when there is lack of melanin in the body. Melanin is responsible in giving color to
the hair and due to the lack of which the hair starts to grey. Grey hair in old days was the sign of
reaching mid life or starting with old age. But in todays life even very young people get gray hair.
There are a lot of reasons for having grey hair. One reason could be stress and tension. Lot of stress
and tension leads to early graying of hair. Another reason could be age. If a person is around 40 it is
natural for him to start graying. It is not that every person who reaches 40 or 40+ has grey hair but
generally this is the scenario every where. As you age your body capacity to produce melanin
decreases and you tend to grey fast. Smoking can also be one of the reasons for gray hair at an early
age. Smoking is generally said to be injurious to health so it has to be injurious to your hair too.
Certain Illness can also lead to graying or premature ageing of hair. Some drugs can also lead to
change of color of hair early.

Grey Hair Treatment

There are some grey hair treatment available. Apart from temporary cosmetic treatments like dyeing
and coloring, you can try natural methods for gray hair treatment. While coloring could rid you of the
problem for some months, to dye grey hair means you will face with the problem again in less than a
month. Other cosmetics available in the market may just help you keep your hair in a good condition
and healthy but they would not help in delaying the process of getting gray hair. Natural remedies are
a better option as discussed in the next section.

Natural Remedies for Gray Hair

Given below are some natural remedies to cure grey hair. These need to be done diligently and
patiently for some months for the results to be visible. Continued use would provide long-lasting
results.

1. Take 100 gms of curd. Add about 1 gm of black pepper to it. Mix it well and apply it evenly on
the hair and scalp. Keep it for an hour and then wash with warm water and mild shampoo. Do
this treatment once a week to see the remarkable difference in the texture and color of your
hair . Your hair will become silkier and regular use will also make the hair dandruff-free. Curd
helps in curing dandruff and making the hair softer while black pepper helps make the hair
black. So one recipe gives 3 benefits a) dandruff-free hair b) soft and silky hair and c) black
hair. Doing this once a week helps in maintaining the hair color and delaying greying to a
great extent. This recipe should be avoided by people who have a tendency to catch frequent
colds and coughs. Curd causes a cooling effect on the head and this may worsen a cold
situation.
2. Rubbing your left and right hand nails with each other is a splendid way to cure hair fall,
increase hair growth and get back the lost color. The beauty of the method lies in its simplicity
and the fact that it is free, needs very little time and has absolutely no side-effects. Regular
use brings back lost color. The new hair that grows back is also colored and not white. You
need to fold both your palms inwards and place the fingernails of both hands against each
other. Then with regular swift motions, rub them against each other. This rubbing procedure
increases the blood flow to the scalp and helps in strengthening the roots. It is simple and can
be done anywhere anytime. Do it for about 5-7 minutes twice a day. It is tried and tested and
is guaranteed to show results. It is well popularized by naturopaths and ayurvedic experts in
India. You need to be patient though. You will begin to notice a difference in about a month
and by the end of 6 months you will se remarkable improvements in your hair.

3. Mix sesame oil or olive oil in juice of bottle gourd and apply to hair. This helps make the hair
long, black, thick and shiny. This helps prevent gray hair and hair fall and is very good for the
overall health of hair.
4. Make a paste of gooseberries and mango seeds. Apply this onto the hair and scalp and leave
on for some time before washing off. When done at regular intervals, this is a good grey hair
treatment.
5. Boil tea leaves in water. Strain and let it cool down. Mix two teaspoonfuls of salt into it and
apply to hair and scalp. Wash after an hour with plain water. This process when done once in
10 days can prevent gray hair.
6. Make a paste of henna in an iron vessel and leave overnight. Also add some walnut pulp in
the morning. Apply this on the hair and make a neat bun. Leave for 1 2 hours or till it dries.
Gently and carefully wash off. Apart from preventing early greying, it also adds a beautiful red
tinge to the hair. It is completely natural and harmless. It also conditions hair.

Prevent Gray Hair

Prevention of graying is a difficult issue to handle as gray hair is caused by a lot of factors which may
not be under our control. Grey hair due to age is not in our hands. It is a natural process and
everybody has to go through it. Gray hair because of heredity is also beyond our control. May be by
taking good care, good eating habits and good sleeping habits we could delay the process of graying.
Never having grey hair in life is I would say wishful thinking. Sooner or later everybody has to gray
and thats how we get wisdom, isnt it?

The hair has a tendency to lose its natural colour with advancing age and turn grey, but
premature greying is a morbid condition and it makes even the young look older. The hair is
an appendage of the skin. It is composed of the same kinds of cells as are found in the outer
layer of the skin, which is known as the epidermis. Hair grows from hair follicles which are
deep recesses in the epidermis. The sebaceous glands of the scalp secrete an oily substance
called sebum, which is the source of nutrition, lustre, and blackness of the hair. The hair
cannot be fed externally, for such nourishment, as the scalp requires, must come to it from the
bloodstream.
A faulty diet and mental worries are the two primary causes of premature greying of hair.
Lack of some of the B vitamins, iron, copper, and iodine in the daily diet is said to be a
contributory factor. Mental worries produce extraordinary tension in the skin of the scalp; this
interferes with the supply of vital nutrition necessary for the health of the hair.
Heredity, unclean condition of scalp etc
Other causes of premature greying of hair are an unclean condition of the scalp, washing the
hair with hot water, drying it with an electric dryer, and use of hair dyes. Heredity is also a
predisposing factor.

vitamins appears to be 10 mg of pantothenic acid, 100 mg of para-aminobenzoic acid, and 2
gm of inositol. To obtain satisfactory results, all three of these vitamins belonging to the B
group should be supplied at one time, preferably in a form which supplies all the B vitamins,
such as yeast and liver. The three anti-greying-hair vitamins can also be produced in the
intestinal
tract
by
bacteria.
Thus,
taking a sufficient quantity of yoghurt daily and a tablespoonful of yeast before each meal is
an excellent remedy for the prevention and treatment of premature greying of hair. If one

wishes to take tablets of calcium pantothenate and para-aminobenzoic acid (paba), they
should be taken in addition to the yeast and yoghurt, and not as a substitute for them.
* Juice of carrot, lettuce, capsicum and fresh alfalfa remove copper deficiency, this is good
remedy for gray hair and hair loss.

Indian
Gooseberry
The use of Indian gooseberry is the foremost among the home remedies found beneficial in
the prevention and treatment of premature greying of hair. This is a valuable hair tonic for
enriching hair growth and hair pigmentation.
The fruit, cut into pieces, should be dried, preferably in shade. These pieces should be boiled
in
coconut oil till the solid matter becomes like charred dust. This darkish oil is very useful
against
premature
greying.
The water in which dried amla pieces have been soaked overnight is also nourishing for the
hair. This water should be used for the last rinse while washing the hair.
Massaging the scalp every night with a teaspoonful of amla juice, mixed with a teaspoon of
almond
oil and a few drops of lime juice, also proves beneficial in the prevention and treatment of
premature greying of hair.

Untimely greying of hair is a big problem. The face looses its beauty. The hair start getting
grey by shock, tension and can also be hereditary. Deficiency of vitamin A and D can cause
greying of hair too.
Take castor oil, an ounce of sandal powder and powder of coffee seeds (an ounce) and heat it
for 20 minutes. Filter it when it is cold Massage this oil every evening and wash them in the
morning. The hair will not turn grey and the grey ones will turn black.
There is another method to prevent hair from turning grey. Take a spoon of Mehandi. a spoon
of dry amla and tea leaves and put them in a cup of hot water. Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt and
1/2 teaspoon of rose water in it, add Juice of lemon too. Leave the mixture for five hours.
Massage it slowly in the roots of hair.
Wash hair with fresh water after two hours. Following the method once a week will prevent
greying of hair.

Those of you experiencing premature greying my want to look into the possibility of a
thyroid condition. My boyfriend started going grey in his 20s. As he settled down into a job,
and a more or less routine schedule, he became aware that he was feeling tired a lot of the
time. His doctor discovered that he had hypothyroidism, and said that it had caused his
premature greying.
There is also hyperthyroidism that gives you more energy than you would normally have, but
it can also make you eyes bulge out, as well as give you prematurely grey hair., so don't
worry about that aspect
I for one really like grey hair. It looks distinguished. But, if you want to cover it up, all the
great innovations in hair coloring should do the trick... about once ever 6 weeks, which is a
hassle.
..............................
" Amla " is the best cure for grey hair and falling hair. Regular massage of "amla" paste
rubbed into the scalp has worked wonders in many cases, frequently reversing the process of
graying and falling off of hair.
Massage your hairs with coconut oil and Lemon everyday for at least 15 minutes. There are
instances of people having black hairs even up to the age of 60-70 years by using this
method.
Soak about 10 to 12 rithas and 3 to 4 shikakai pods overnight in a pint of water. Next day,
boil for a few minutes and strain. Use this liquid as a normal shampoo. Separately soak 10 to
12 dried amlas in half a cup of water overnight. Strain and use as a hair conditioner after your
head bath. Leave it on the hair for ten minutes and rinse your hair with clean warm water.
This will leave your hair smooth and shiny and also stop premature graying of your hair.

Mix lemon juice in castor oil and beat till frothy. Add 'henna' in to it. Apply the mixture
evenly over the scalp, and bathe after an hour using 'shikakai' and 'ritha' shampoo as above.
This checks greying of hair.
Take a cup of strong black tea (without milk), and to this add a tablespoon of salt. When cold,
strain the tea and massage it on the roots. Leave it on for an hour, and then rinse with cold
water. Do not shampoo it.

Diet, Nutrition and Vitamins For Hair Loss

One key factor in maintaining a growing protein on a part of your biological body is obvious: you must
maintain a healthy diet. Although certain factors have been definitely identified as contributors to hair
loss, you must keep in mind that hair is part of the complete biological system of the human body.
Being a system, dysfunctions in one part of the system can contribute to dysfunctions in other parts;
chain reactions occur when one part of the body malfunctions, causing other parts within the system
to falter. To maintain optimum health, it is best to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise
regimen.
Defining exactly what a healthy diet is when it comes to preventing hair loss can be a little more
complex. Principally, the main vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that you must ingest in some form to
maintain healthy hair are vitamin A, all B vitamins-particularly vitamins B-6 and B-12, folic acid, biotin,
vitamin C, vitamin E, copper, iron, zinc, iodine, protein of course, silica, essential fatty acids
(EFAs, formerly known as vitamin F) and last but not least you must consume water. There are
also certain foods that may cause dysfunctions which will contribute to hair loss.
The best way to maintain a healthy vitamin and mineral intake is a good diet. It is not necessary
or advisable to go out and buy a bunch of over-the-counter vitamin supplements in order to achieve
your suggested nutritional levels. Many over-the-counter vitamins are chemically processed and are
not completely absorbed into the system. It is also easy to overdose with over the counter vitamins
particularly when taking supplements of fat-soluble vitamins and minerals, causing toxicity and
adverse reactions. The likelihood of doing this is far less with food; therefore it is always best to obtain
the bulk of your vitamin and mineral requirements from whole foods.
Vitamin A is a key component to developing healthy cells and tissues in the body, including hair.
Additionally, it works with silica and zinc to prevent drying and clogging of the sebaceous glands, the
glands vital to producing sebum, which is an important lubricant for the hair follicle. Vitamin A
deficiencies commonly cause thickening of the scalp, dry hair, and dandruff. Air pollution, smoking,
extremely bright light, certain cholesterol-lowering drugs, laxatives, and aspirin are some known
vitamin A inhibitors. Liver, fish oil, eggs, fortified milk, and red, yellow, and orange vegetables are
good sources for vitamin A, as are some dark green leafy vegetables like spinach. Be particularly
careful if you take vitamin A supplements, as vitamin A is fat-soluble, allowing the body to store it and
making it easy for the body to overdose on vitamin A. Vitamin A overdoses can cause excessively dry
skin and inflamed hair follicles, and in some cases ironically can cause hair loss. If you choose to take
supplements of this vitamin, consult with a specialist first. As mentioned above, the likelihood of
overdosing by achieving your vitamin A intake by food sources is almost nil, so it is best to attempt to
achieve this at all costs.
B-vitamins work interdependently and therefore all levels of B vitamins need to be sufficient in order to
maintain proper health. Vitamins B-6, folic acid, biotin, and vitamin B-12 are all key components in
maintaining healthy hemoglobin levels in the blood, which is the iron-containing portion of red-blood
cells. Hemoglobins primary function is to carry oxygen from the lungs to the tissues of the body, so if
these vitamins are deficient in your body, then hair and skin will indeed suffer. Fortunately, some of
the tastiest foods contain these vitamins. Vitamin B-6 is found in protein rich foods, which is excellent
because the body needs a sufficient amount of protein to maintain hair growth as well. Liver, chicken,
fish, pork, kidney, and soybeans are good sources of B-6 and are relatively low in fat when they are
not fried. Folic acid is found in whole grains, cereals, nuts, green leafy vegetables, orange juice,
brewers yeast, wheat germ, and liver again. Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and other dairy products

meanwhile provide healthy amounts of B-12. Biotin deficiencies are rare unless there is a severe case
of malnutrition or a serious intestinal disorder, since a healthy gut produces biotin through good
bacteria found there.
Note: if you have a known intestinal disorder and are plagued by hair loss, ask your doctor about
biotin deficiencies and possible solutions.
Vitamin C is responsible for the development of healthy collagen, which is necessary to hold body
tissues together. A vitamin C deficiency can cause split ends and hair breakage, yet this is easily
reversible with an increase to normal vitamin C levels. Vitamin C can be found in foods such as fresh
peppers, citrus fruits, melons berries, potatoes, tomatoes, and dark green leafy vegetables.
Vitamin E is necessary to provide good blood circulation to the scalp by increasing the uptake of
oxygen. Vitamin E is derived from foods such as green leafy vegetables, nuts, grains, vegetable oils,
and most ready-to-eat cereals, which are fortified with vitamin E. Vitamin E deficiencies are rare in
people in North America and Europe. In the rare cases of a vitamin E deficiency, usually caused by
the inability to absorb oils and fats, dietary supplements are available.
Copper is a trace mineral that is also necessary in the production of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin as
mentioned earlier is vital to the process of carrying oxygen to tissues such as the hair, and obviously
hair is alive cannot grow without proper oxygen, yet it does not breathe as other components of our
body do, because the oxygen must get to the shaft of the hair. Good sources of copper are liver,
seafood, nuts, and seeds.
Another key mineral vital in the production of hemoglobin is iron. Iron is found in two forms, heme and
non-heme; heme iron is much easier to absorb into the system. This is where the problem lies. Of
course most people know that red meat is a good source of iron, however red meat is non-heme iron
and is difficult for the body to absorb, as are many iron supplements. Good heme iron sources are
green leafy vegetables, kidney beans and bran. Additionally, you can increase the absorption of nonheme iron into your body by consuming non-heme food sources and vitamin C sources in the same
meal.

Why vitamins?
Regardless of whether one is a man or a woman, one should be aware that he or she is getting
enough of those essential vitamins that can significantly prevent the hair loss. Contrary to
the popular belief, hair loss would affect just as many women as it strikes the men, and
should be cured with an ounce of bar before it gets worse. While all vitamins play an
essential role in being healthy, they almost all i.e. vitamins, help preventing the hair fall or
hair loss. One of the best methods for anyone to help to ensure that the lovely locks remain
intact, and on the head, is taking proper amounts of the vitamins for hair fall or hair loss
prevention.
The more stressful the life is, the more important it is that one is taking vitamins, eating a
balanced though healthy diet and even taking nutritional supplements that can help anyone
preventing hair falls.
Many of the vitamins are provided by consuming healthy and good daily multi-vitamin foods
and rest of the amounts can be provided supplying supplements. Adjusting the diet would
slower down the loss of hairs.

Some of the essential vitamins for hair loss

Vitamin A
It is an essential vitamin that helps in hair loss and also to cure thinning of hair. Though, it
is to be sure to not take more than 25,000 IU a day as it might lead to more hair loss or other
health ailments.
Vitamin K
Some of the natural healers consider this as an antioxidant vitamin that is quite essential to
keep the hair, looking firmer and shinier, and also the scalp nourished.
Vitamin B2
This is also called as riboflavin and deficiencies are linked with an increased production of
sebum (oils manufactured by the hair follicles all across the body). Nevertheless, too much
riboflavin and increased sebum productions might result in reduced strength of the hair
shafts.
Vitamin B3
This is popular as niacin and it can produce a skin flush, which is a comfortless feeing, or hot
flash. If anyone decides to take this, he or she should take the minimum and see how the body
responds first.
Vitamin B6
This is known as Pyridoxine hydrochloride. There are many researchers that reveal that B6
can help with healthy hair growth.
Vitamin B12/folic acid
Folic acid is popular for its importance in healthy cellular activities, proper cell divisions, and
proper hair growths.
Vitamin C
The ascorbic acid, known as Vitamin C can be found in several vegetables and fruits,
particularly in citrus fruits. This heals the wounds and also tightens the hair follicles making
them strong and not allowing hair falls.
Vitamin E
This essential vitamin is known to help with proper blood circulation within the scalp region.
This can be found in various beans as well as some oils.
Biotin

This essential element helps producing keratin and hence might prevent premature graying
and hair loss.
Inositol
This is said to keep the hair follicles healthy at the cellular levels. Foods those are rich in
inositol include whole grains, yeasts, livers, citrus fruit, egg, rice, and milk. With the addition
of inositol, one would have a natural hair growth underneath the scalp that ultimately results
in healthier hair.
Saw palmetto
It is a type of fruit that is fabled to help solving problems with baldness and prostate health in
the United States and all across the Europe .
Zinc
This is best known to favor hair growth. Hair loss is evident in absence of a substantial
amount of zinc in the body. Zinc deficiency not only makes problems with hair fall, but also
shows changes of the scalp. The scalp might become very dry or flaky and might often times
be irritated due to the lack of nutrients.
.....

Vitamin supplements play a key role in the health of both hair

follicles and skin. To keep the hair and skin on your head healthy
the following 5 vitamins can be critical.
1. Folic Acid - One of the most important nutrients to prevent
hair
loss

Folic acid promotes healthy cell growth which in turn

produces healthy skin regeneration, and of course hair
regeneration or hair regrow. Taking folic acid vitamins for
hair loss prevention can not only greatly decrease your
chances of experiencing hair loss to begin with, as well as
help to prevent future hair loss. When male are deficient in
folic acid, some men became completely bald!
Folic acid can be purchased in supplements over the counter,
but it is best to get your vitamins in the foods you eat. Folic
acid is found in nuts and in soybeans. Try replacing your
cow's milk with soymilk.
2. Vitamin A - The second of the important vitamins for hair loss
prevention

Vitamin A is plays a vital role in maintaining healthy hair,

skin, and vision. But A word of caution, too much vitamin A
can actually cause hair loss by increasing the sebum in your
hair follicles. Sebum is a substance produced by cholesterol
which in normal amounts is conducive to healthy skin and
hair, but too much can encourage the growth of bacteria at

the follicle level and thus actually cause hair loss.

Vitamin A can be found in many foods but is most
prominent in fruits and vegetables. You can find vitamin A
in carrots, tomatoes, peppers and salads as well as eggs and
organ meats like liver.
3. Vitamin

Vitamin E is essential for promoting healthy blood flow,

which in turn helps to ensure that the scalp has adequate
blood circulation as well. Start with 400 IU daily and slowly
increase to 800-1,000 IU daily. Adding a scalp massage
by yourself to increase the blood flow to those critical
hair
follicles
Vitamin E can be found in leafy green vegetables, such as
lettuce and spinach as well as in nuts and whole grains.
4. All

of

the

vitamins

All of the vitamins B are critical for hair growth and

circulation, Foods rich in B vitamins include beans, peas,
carrots, cauliflower, soy beans, nutritional yeast, bran, nuts
and eggs.
Para-Aminobenzoic Acid : It has been shown to
be an anti-grey hair vitamin. Research on humans with
grey hair being given 200mg of PABA after each meal
produced results that showed that a study of the hair
afterwards resulted in a seventy per cent result of the hair
returning to its original colour. PABA and the B vitamins
are found in foods such as liver, kidney, whole grain and
yeast.

Pantothenic Acid (B5) : It is considered to be

important to the health of the skin and scalp. Pantothenic
acid is necessary for the well being of every body cell and
neither carbohydrate nor fat can be changed into energy
without it. It is also important for the functioning of the
adrenal glands that produce much of the male sex
hormones. You can find it in liver, kidney, egg yolks,
whole grains, milk and potatoes

Niacin (B3) : Niacin has a dilating effect on

vessels and capillaries it is thought to be increasing
circulation to the scalp and stimulating hair growth. The
richest sources of niacin and tryptophan are chicken, fish,
cooked dried beans and peas, brewer's yeast, wheat bran,
peanuts, beef and whole grain wheat products.

Inositol : It is a compound occurring in the brain,

muscles, liver, kidney and eyes. A diet lacking Inositol
produced baldness, but when the vitamin was added to the
food, the hair grew back again.

Biotin (B7) : Biotin often called vitamin H, is yet

another B complex component. Biotin is a proven hair

growth vitamin and a preventative to excessive hair loss. It

is also seen as an aid in preventing hair turning grey.
Balding men might find that a Biotin supplement may
keep their hair longer. Good food sources of biotin include
brewer's yeast, brown rice, bulgur, green peas, lentils, oats,
soybeans, sunflower seeds, and walnuts. You can also use
hair care products containing biotin.
5. Vitamin

Vitamin C helps your body produce collagen naturally. The

collagen will also give you strong hair. You can get vitamin
C in all kinds of citrus fruits as well as in red peppers. 3,00010,000 mg daily.
...

There has been a great debate that waht you eat has any effects on how well the hair will
grow. It certainly makes the difference. Healthy hair growth needs a wide range of vitamins.
The hair reflects the overall state of the health and if you are very engaged eating any healthy
diet, and you face tremendous stressful life, the hair will reflect it too!
It said a look at which vitamins will do a good job in helping you keep your hair healthy.
Before we jump to any tips on vitamins for hair loss, it is important to understand that one of
the most important vitamins is vitamin B complex. Simply put, the best vitamins for hair
growth include all B vitamins. You can find these vitamins in lots of foods like whole grains,
fresh fruits, brewers yeast, eggs. It is important to continue to have vitamin B regularly.
Because it is water soluble your body will flush it out.
Here are some tips for vitamins for hair loss. Para-aminobenzoic acid might prevent the
hair from greying. You can try inositol can help prevent the hair from falling. Niacin
(vitamin B-3) can promote the blood circulation to the scalp and hence make hair healthy.
Panthenol (vitamin B-5) can prevent hair loss and also aids with your hair regrowth. Biotin
helps in preventing the hair from premature graying and is also does a great deal to help keep
hair from falling out. Vitamins B-6 and B-12 will make hair roots stronger.
Vitamin E is also believed to aid in helping to prevent hair loss. This is because it is an
antioxidant that stimulates the scalp as it increases the blood circulation. An increase in blood
flow supplies more nutrients to the hair follicles and hence, your hair becomes stronger and
nutrients make it shinier. Most Americans consume adequate vitamin E in their diets,
however it helps to eat lots of green leafy vegetables.
Vitamin A is essential for over-all good health and moreover, it is also very useful to hair
follicles, as it keeps the hair root firmer and stronger. Vitamin A can be found in orange, red,
and yellow vegetables, green leafy vegetables, eggs and liver. However, one has to be careful
while taking vitamin A. this is because the body doesnt break Vitamin A down like it does to
rest of the vitamins (like B complex). Vitamin A may accumulate in the body and it may also
accumulate up to dangerous levels.

Everyone knows about the benefits of vitamin C to treat common cold. But it is equally good
for hair. There are lots of ways you can get vitamin C. some of the easiest ways are just to
make sure you eat lots of citrus fruits.
If you smoke or drink, simply stop! This may cause hair fall and hence just quit. Also, in
ancient science like Ayurveda, herbs such as amalaki, bhringaraja, brahmi etc are considered
to be very beneficial in keeping the hair healthy. Probably, they may have essential and
enough amounts of vitamins for hair loss.

6 Foods prevent stop

your hair loss

Hair like any part of the body requires the proper amounts of
vitamins and minerals to stay healthy and continue growing.
Following are the key minerals necessary to prevent your hair
loss:
1. Iron - Could be a major cause of your hair loss
Iron deficiency could be a major cause of hair loss. Iron
allows other nutrients to be more easily absorbed by the hair
follicles by allowing your scalp to get a good flow of blood,
and sulphur promotes hair growth by improving circulation
in the blood to the scalp and decreases inflammation, helping
prevent hair loss. Minoxidil is a proven treatment for hair
loss
that
works
in
a
similar
way.
Avoid taking iron supplements, you should get all of your
Iron from food sources. Iron can be found in Oysters, lean
red meat, liver, poultry, tuna, Iron-fortified cereals, whole
grains, dried beans, eggs, dried fruit, dark green leafy
vegetables, wheat, millet, oats, brown rice, Lima beans, soy
beans, dried beans and peas, kidney beans, almonds, Brazil
nuts, prunes, raisins, apricots, broccoli, spinach, kale,
collards, asparagus, dandelion greens.

2. Trace
Mineral
Silica
Silica is vital to the strength of hair, and although it will not
necessarily stop hair from falling out from the follicle, it will
stop hair breakage. It works by stimulating the cell
metabolism and formation, which slows the aging process.
You can get enough trace mineral silica in your diet by
eating Oats, millet, barley, whole wheat, and algae.

3. Zinc
Zinc is another vital component to growing healthy hair, it is
responsible for cell production, tissue growth and repair, and
the maintenance of the oil-secreting glands of the scalp. It
also plays a large role in protein synthesis and collagen
formation.
Severe zinc deficiency in humans has been shown to
produce baldness and scalp problems that were reversed
when zinc was returned to the diet. Zinc has also been shown
to stop hair turning grey. One delightful effect of zinc is that
it has long been regarded as an aphrodisiac, and as such it
can be very beneficial for your sex life, which is not a bad
side
effect
to
have.
For a good source of zinc, wheat germ is the best, other
sources are brewer's yeast, pumpkin seeds, oysters and
mussels, shrimps , egg yolks, organic beef, beef liver, lima
beans, organic / wild turkey, chickpeas, split peas, raw
cashews, pecans, green peas, almonds, ginger root

4. Iodine
Iodine is very important when it comes to combating hair
loss. It is actually an essential mineral that performs various
tasks to keep you body healthy. Iodine is necessary
component for proper thyroid function. Your thyroid glands
controls metabolism of cells. Therefore, lack of iodine
causes hair loss in series of sequential disturbance, that is,
iodine affects thyroid glands, thyroid glands in turn do not
work properly and metabolism gets slower resulting in
slower
cellular
growth
of
body
tissues.

Table salt isn't the type of iodine you need for hair growth
and it could easily cause you to overdose on iodine and
actually cause you more hair loss. So stay away from iodized
salt and and start getting your iodine from food sources.
These include kelp, yogurt (low fat), cow's milk, boiled
eggs, strawberries and Mozzarella cheese.

Diet, Nutrition and Vitamins For Hair Loss

Zinc is another vital component to healthy hair, being that it is responsible for cell production, tissue
growth and repair, and the maintenance of the oil-secreting glands of the scalp. It also plays a large
role in protein synthesis and collagen formation. For this reason, zinc is important for both hair
maintenance and dandruff prevention. Most Americans are deficient in zinc. Most foods of animal
origin, particularly seafood, contain good amounts of zinc; oysters are particularly rich in zinc. Zinc is
also found in eggs and milk, although in much smaller amounts. Zinc from sources such as nuts,
legumes, and natural grains is of a different type than those found in animal sources and is not easily
used by the body, although oats are a good source of zinc that is readily used by the body.
Protein is found in most of the aforementioned animal source foods, particularly meats, fish, milk,
cheese, eggs and yogurt. There is no need for a person eating the average Western diet to eat
additional protein. Too much protein, even though hair is made of protein, will not improve hair growth
and may cause other health problems.
A challenge for vegans is to maintain healthy levels of protein, being that complete proteins
containing all nine essential amino acids necessary are found mostly in animal sources. Legumes,
seeds, nuts, grains and vegetables do not contain the same form of protein necessary for a healthy
body. There is only one common non-meat source for complete protein, and that is the soybean.
Fortunately, soybeans have been made into tofu and texturized vegetable protein (TVP) so that they
can be made into various dishes. Additionally, you may eat from a wide variety of vegetable sources
in order to obtain all the essential amino acids.
Iodine is vital to the growth of hair. Sheep farmers long ago discovered that vegetation void of iodine
due to iodine-depleted soil will adversely affect the growth of wool in sheep. Likewise, our hair needs
iodine to grow. Iodine is synthetically added to table salt, however in this form it is not assimilated well
into the body and can therefore cause iodine overload. An excess of iodine in the body can adversely
affect the thyroid. It is best to use non-iodized salt and retrieve your iodine from natural food sources.
These include seaweed, salmon, seafood, lima beans, molasses, eggs, potatoes with the skin on,
watercress and garlic.
One of the most difficult nutrients vital to hair growth to get in your diet is the trace mineral silica.
Silica is a form of silicon and is the second most abundant element in the earths crust, second only to
oxygen. The Earth provides everything we need for health, and with silicon being so abundant, it
would seem that there would never be a problem with silica deficiency. Unfortunately, trace minerals
are rare in Western diets because our food is processed and our soil depleted by chemical treatments
so often that trace minerals are lost. Silica is vital to the strength of hair, and although it will not
necessarily stop hair from falling out from the follicle, it will stop hair breakage. It works by stimulating
the cell metabolism and formation, which slows the aging process. Foods that are rich in silica are
rice, oats, lettuce, parsnips, asparagus, onion, strawberry, cabbage, cucumber, leek, sunflower seeds,
celery, rhubarb, cauliflower, and swiss chard. Note that many of these foods, particularly rice, are a
large part of Asian diets and Asians tend to have the strongest and healthiest hair. Be sure to seek

out all the above foods from sources that grow food organically, as this is vital to obtaining the trace
minerals that are usually not present in North American soil and therefore not in American foods.
Additionally these foods should be eaten uncooked, or in the case of rice-unwashed, as trace
minerals are easily cooked and washed away.
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are fatty acids that are needed by the body yet not produced by the
body. EFAs are a key component to healthy skin, hair and nails. Common skin diseases, such as
eczema and seborrhea, are in part caused by deficiencies in EFAs. Eating deep-water fish such as
salmon, sardines, mackerel, trout, or herring approximately three times a week will provide sufficient
amounts of EFAs. However, if for some reason you cannot eat deep-water fish or have an extreme
dislike for it, it may be necessary to take a supplement to obtain the required amount of EFAs.
Last but not least, make sure to include the proper amount of water in your diet. Water is vital to
proper hydration, which is necessary in order for all nutrients to be utilized properly by the body, not to
mention the proper function of every cell in the body including hair follicles. The suggested amount of
water intake daily is eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, or 64 ounces a day.
The effects of high-fat diets and the increase of DHT (Dihydrotestosterone), a chemical
produced by the body found to cause hair loss, is not conclusive at this time. However, there
does seem to be a connection; as societies that consumed relatively low-fat diets such as pre-World
War II Japan experienced almost no pattern baldness, whereas in post-World War II Japan there is an
increase in pattern baldness as their society consumes a higher fat diet. In fact, Asian and African
men in their native countries traditionally suffer very little Male Pattern Baldness (MPB). Although
when the same peoples come to North America, they begin to develop MPB. Because people of all
races and ethnicities tend to develop MPB or androgenetic alopecia, yet do not exhibit these
tendencies before moving to America, changes in diet may be a leading contributing factor. Diets high
in fat do increase testosterone, which is the main component in DHT. More research needs to be
done on this topic to reach conclusive evidence, although it certainly could not hurt to lower your fat
intake.
Conditions that can cause hair loss
Hair loss and thinning hair can be brought on by a variety of different
conditions. Although, many researchers still pin most of the blame on
genetics. The most common type of hair loss is referred to as "pattern hair
loss" (androgenic alopecia). Many natural hair loss treatments exist that
can help deal with pattern hair loss. Listed below are other conditions
which can cause hair loss and thinning hair.
Conditions are as follows:
Androgenetic Alopecia - male (L) and female (R)
Alopecia Areata - In this type of hair loss, hair usually falls out, resulting in totally
smooth, round patches about the size of a coin or larger. It can, rarely, result in
complete loss of scalp and body hair. This disease may affect children or adults of any
age. The cause of alopecia areata is unknown. Apart from the hair loss, affected persons
are generally in excellent health. In most cases, the hair regrows by itself.
Dermatologists can treat many people with this condition. Treatments include topical
medications, a special kind of light treatment, or in some cases pills. See products
which may help hair loss
Alopecia Areata Childbirth - When a women is pregnant, more of her hairs will be
growing. However, after a woman delivers her baby, many hairs enter the resting phase
of the hair cycle. Within two to three months, some women will notice large amounts of
hair coming out in their brushes and combs. This can last one to six months, but
resolves completely in most cases.

High Fever, Severe Infection, Severe Flu - Illnesses may cause hairs to enter the
resting phase. Four weeks to three months after a high fever, severe illness or infection,
a person may be shocked to see a lot of hair falling out. This shedding usually corrects
itself.
Thyroid Disease - Both an over-active thyroid and an under-active thyroid can cause
hair loss. Your physician can diagnosis thyroid disease with laboratory tests. Hair loss
associated with thyroid disease can be reversed with proper treatment. See products
which may help hair loss
Inadequate Protein in Diet - Some people who go on crash diets that are low in
protein, or have severely abnormal eating habits, may develop protein malnutrition. The
body will save protein by shifting growing hairs into the resting phase. Massive hair
shedding can occur two to three months later. Hair can then be pulled out by the roots
fairly easily. This condition can be reversed and prevented by eating the proper amount
of protein and, when dieting, maintaining adequate protein intake.
Medications - Some prescription drugs may cause temporary hair shedding. Examples
include some of the medicines used for the following: gout, arthritis, depression, heart
problems, high blood pressure, or blood thinner. High doses of vitamin A may also cause
hair shedding.
Cancer Treatments - Some cancer treatments will cause hair cells to stop dividing.
Hairs become thin and break off as they exit the scalp. This occurs one to three weeks
after the treatment. Patients can lose up to 90 percent of their scalp hair. The hair will
regrow after treatment ends. Patients may want to get wigs before treatment.
Birth Control Pills - Women who lose hair while taking birth control pills usually have
an inherited tendency for hair thinning. If hair thinning occurs, a woman can consult her
gynecologist about switching to another birth control pill. When a women stops using
oral contraceptives, she may notice that her hair begins shedding two or three months
later. This may continue for six months when it usually stops. This is similar to hair loss
after the birth of a child. See products which may help hair loss
Low Serum Iron - Iron deficiency occasionally produces hair loss. Some people don't
have enough iron in their diets or may not fully absorb iron. Women who have heavy
menstrual periods may develop iron deficiency. Low iron can be detected by laboratory
tests and can be corrected by taking iron pills.
Major Surgery/Chronic Illness - Anyone who has a major operation may notice
increased hair shedding within one to three months afterwards. The condition reverses
itself within a few months but people who have a severe chronic illness may shed hair
indefinitely.
Fungus Infection (Ringworm) of the Scalp - Caused by a fungus infection, ringworm
(which has nothing to do with worms) begins with small patches of scaling that can
spread and result in broken hair, redness, swelling, and even oozing. This contagious
disease is most common in children and oral medication will cure it.
Hair Pulling (Trichotillomania) - Children and sometimes adults will twist or pull their
hair, brows or lashes until they come out. In children especially, this is often just a bad
habit that gets better when the harmful effects of that habit are explained. Sometimes
hair pulling can be a coping response to unpleasant stresses and occasionally is a sign of
a serious problem needing the help of a mental health professional.

9 foods that help prevent hair loss

1. Chickpeas
Eating chickpeas basically kills two birds with one stone. You can get both zinc and the
vitamin B-6 you need for healthy hair from chickpeas. Zinc has an important part in
building hair protein.
Zinc also works together with Vitamin A. Missing one of those two causes you to have
dandruff that could contribute to hair loss. Non Vegans can eat roast beef instead and
get all of the same benefits and protein as well.

2. Roast beef
Roast beef is another source of Vitamin B-6 and Zinc. It's also a good source of protein.
Vegans might consider taking Soy beans instead for protein and chickpeas for vitamin B6
and Zinc.

3. Soy beans
Soy is a great source of protein for vegans. It also contains a substantial amount of Iron
and Vitamin E. Iron is an important part of hemoglobin production. Hemoglobin is
responsible for getting oxygen to the tissues of the body. Without it your hair won't
grow.
Vitamin E also helps with the absorption of oxygen and increasing blood circulation to
the scalp.

4. Almonds
Almonds are good sources of vegetarian protein, Iron and Vitamin E. They also help to
lower cholesterol helping you avoid having to take cholesterol lowering drugs in the
future. Some cholesterol lowering drugs actually cause hair loss.

5. Whole wheat
Whole wheat is a good source of Silica and Iron. Silica is very important because it helps
with the absorption of many other vitamins and minerals. It's usually not found in
abundance in western diets and in many cases it could be one of the main causes of hair
loss.

6. cow's milk
Cow's milk has absorbable Iodine. It's impossible to overdose on Iodine from food
sources unlike Iodized salt.

7. oats
Oats are a good source of easily absorbable Iron as well. It's also a good source of
Potassium, phosphorus and magnesium.

8. Oranges

Oranges (or orange juice) are a good source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps make meat
and soy sources of Iron more absorbable. Vitamin C is a big part of the development of
collagen which is necessary for hair growth.

9. Fish
Fish is a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin B-6, Protein and essential fatty acids (efa's).
EFA's play a major role in maintaining healthy nails, hair and skin.
