Observing an Indiana landscape, I am always

surprised by what it gives me.
The landscape offers nourishment for the senses

Biography

Artist Statement Contact

At the age of ten Rebekah discovered her artistic talent in the use of charcoals and pastels in
still-life. Her artwork was further enhanced by
attending Saturday classes at Herron School of Art
during grade school and high school. She studied three years at Herron School of Art under the
guidance of Amanda Block, David Rubins, Robert
Eagerton and Stanley Burford. Although she has
worked with oils, pen and ink, pastels, graphite
and printmaking, watercolor remains her favorite
media.

I love beauty!! With each painting I begin from

start to completion whether from an idea, picture
reference, or commission project, I wish to instill
that love in each watercolor. My wish is to draw
the viewer into my watercolors if it is of flowers,
a barn, a landscape, a winter scene, portrait, or
sea scape and they see pleasure and peace in
each painting. If the viewer enjoys my work, then
that is a reward in itself.
Each painting becomes a part of me, as God
holds my brush.

from the subject itself. While this may sound a bit of a stretch, I
nevertheless feel compelled to express my understanding of it on

after a photo likeness. I want something that sees beyond the visual and

teaching and working with young people has joyfully consumed her life for 35 years.
Her educational contributions have included curriculum for the academically gifted and
advanced art students. She is also a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of
Indianapolis. She has won many Art awards as well as the Kitlinger and Grey Prelude
Arts Educator of the Year Award for Indiana in 2001. Many of Debbies students have
gone on to become named artists and art teachers. Current projects include book illustration, commissioned oil paintings and acrylic pieces. She is also heading up a collaboration with students and another artist on the construction of a large community piece,
a sculpture for Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis. The sculpture is scheduled
for completion in spring of 2015. Debbie lives in Greenwood, Indiana. She is married
with 4 daughters, 8 grand children and almost 2 great grandsons. The full speed
ahead life of mom, grandma, teacher and artist has led her down the path to where
she now has a new art studio in Greenwood. Besides creating her own art, she
teaches private as well as group lessons and workshops in her studio.

I have always had a need to create and

explore the world through visual means.
This curiosity has led me in many directions but painting is where I seem to find
the most frequent expression. My work
tends to focus on the wonders and experiences that affect us in the world: gorgeous
colors, bits of humor, poignant moments,
and all the splendors and happiness we can
extract from our short existence. Recent
pursuits have led me to begin exploring
psychological traits such as loneliness,
strength or joy through surface texture and
color. I believe that the important things
in life should be exploited, revealed and
preserved by using talents that were given
to us as a gift.

What We Knew (Back Then) / graphite

Biography
Charlene Browns love of the visual arts was nurtured from a young age by her grandmother, who
was a high school art teacher, artist, and kindred
spirit. Throughout Charlenes formative years,
her grandmother encouraged her to experiment
with different techniques and mediums, making
each new project fresh and exciting and magical.
Charlene went on to earn a Bachelor Degree in
Fine Arts from Earlham College, and following
graduation utilized her creative energies teaching
art to children and young adults. The Renaissance
Gallery in Carmel, Indiana, launched her career as
a fine artist in May 2012. Charlenes paintings and
drawings combine elements of realistic, impressionistic, and abstract techniques. Her sensitive
portrayals of people and nature are inspired by a
wide variety of past and present masters,

Whimsy / charcoal and graphite

including Rembrandt for his use of light and shadow, Andrew Wyeth for his attention to the abstract quality of line and mass, and Susan Lyon for
the dramatic and tender quality of her drawings.
Art critic Brian Sherwin, editor of The Art Edge,
offered some thoughts about Charlenes figurative
paintings and drawings, stating, Charlene M.
Browns figurative work offers viewers an emotional powder keg. The visual power of her work
is simply stunning to observe. Her images, when
viewed collectively, bombard viewers with solid
observations of joy and sorrow evealing the essence of the human spirit. Charlene continues to
teach children and adults out of her home studio
in Carmel, Indiana, as well as working daily to
hone her skills as an artist.

Artist Statement
Even beyond the elemental beauty or
luminosity I find in a subject, I strive to
capture mood and character in my work. I
find this easiest to do by working en plein
air, or on site. I feel extremely fortunate that
my own home country, and indeed much
of the upper Midwest, is an area of such
varied geographic and societal features and
moodsone can be immersed in
landscapes of great solitude as well as
intimacy, observe people whose lifestyles
range from the pre-industrial to the ultra-technological, and find the structural
legacies of master-class stonemasons, carpenters, bricklayers, and others who spent

their lives building things. I could spend a

lifetime painting the regions many faces
and still never be done. For those interested
in the technique of my mixed media works,
those paintings are combinations of penand-ink and watercolor, rendered in that
order, on hot-press watercolor paper. With
waterproof black India ink, pure and/or in
dilution, I use a crows-quill pen to sketch
out forms and values. Once the ink sketch
is complete and dry, that sketch is overlaid
with watercolor, sometimes almost straight
from the tube. Its a technique that exploits
the brilliance of watercolor while achieving
a unique texture and strength, and

together the media create a luminescence

and an atmosphere difficult to achieve with
either medium alone. Its an extraordinarily
time-consuming technique, though, and
risky, toosince a mistake in either the ink
sketch or the watercolor layer can ruin a
piece. Quills can break, sending ink flying,
and Ive even had insects fly into the ink or
quill and then cast themselves all over the
paper. Despite such inherent uncertainties,
I can say with profound gratitude what so
many artists express: that the results are
well worth the effort, and I find great joy in
my work.

demanding in its own right. Every piece, be

I have always loved to draw and paint. My mother, who was very artistic, taught
me the basics of sketching while I was still in grade school. She encouraged my
creativity. I am so grateful to have had her love and support for my artwork. In
1984, I started my own business. It was completely unrelated to art, so I had to
vent my creative impulses through illustrating newspaper ads, creating window
graphics for local businesses, and doing watercolor portraits in my spare time. A
career change in 1994 afforded me an opportunity to devote more time to art. I
was able to study oil painting with Carin Hebensreit at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, specifically to learn the glazing techniques of the Old Masters. This has
brought out a richness and depth to my work which was previously unrealized.
Over the years, I have completed many commissions for both public and private

Biography

Indiana artist Nancy Cupka utilizes

impressionism, often in the form of
pointillism, to explore the beauty of the
rural countryside. Her technique makes
use of overlapping dots and or short
strokes of color that the eye blends
together, creating a subtle marriage
between color, light and shadow. Thus,
she is able to capture shimmering summer afternoons, beloved family pets,
rolling fields and the quiet moments
of a dawning day. Cupka was born in
Indianapolis, IN during WWII and was
inspired by an artist father who enjoyed
working in clay and wood. Her parents
enrolled her in childrens classes at John
Herron Art Institute which stirred within
her an excitement and wonder for fine
art. Her enthusiasm for art stood the
test of time and pervades her entire life.
The Art associations that have opened
many doors for Nancy, through gallery
showings, sales exhibitions, memberships and lasting friendships, include:
The Hoosier Art Salon, The Indiana Artist
Club, Indiana Heritage Arts, The American Artists Professional League, New
York, NY, The Brown County Art Gallery,

of my paintings are pleasurable, serene and sparkling with color. This is
because I look for the joy in them. A
difficult bout with cancer taught me to
seek out the simple beauty that God
has placed around us and therein is
where I seek most of my inspiration. I
also feel that it is important for something in each new work to challenge
me to discover the unexpected, the
thing within the art that I did not see at
first glance. This discovery draws me
deeper and deeper into the work and
carries me away. The hidden colors
Serenity
that happen in bright light and shadow,
The Carousel
the many value changes or an unexpected color intensity from juxtaposed
hues are examples of my new found
joy. Broken color is the trademark of
most of my artwork. Small dots or
stokes are used to tantalize the eye
of the observer by causing it to blend
them into sometimes soft, sometimes
brilliant optical mixtures. ImpressionThe Race

it was time to return to his roots in fine art.
Today Steve has work in collections from Maine to
Colorado. In addition, his work has been shown,
sold, and garnered awards in competitive exhibitions in Indiana, Colorado, Texas, and California.

His work has also been chosen for inclusion in the

recently published book Painting Indiana III, a
cooperative project of the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association and Indiana Landmarks.
Most of Steves work in recent years falls into two
categories, landscapes and figurative/historical.
On his website you will notice that in addition to
the landscapes there are also numerous images
of Native Americans, fur traders, and others from
the 1800s. Steve believes that the two disciplines complement each other and he enjoys the
change. Steve also uses his time as an avid cyclist
to search for new painting opportunities.

Statement
Except for raising a family,
painting is the most rewarding thing I have ever done.
I find it extremely difficult
to make a statement that
summarizes why I paint, but
all I know is that whenever I
paint, everything else stops,
and I lose myself in the painting process. I want people
who see my work to somehow share in that feeling.

daughter and 2 grandsons who are both in the Air
Force. I worked for over 35 years in a lab and only
retired in 2004 due to illness. Was always a worka-holic. So I was very lucky to discover that I had
a talent for art. I started with Zentangles and went
to watercolor from there. I work in art in many
capacities. I am on the board of directors at the

always try to paint!!!

Beauty abounds in the

hills, rivers and fields of
Indiana and Kentucky. Plein
air oil painting allows me a
Divine connection with natural beauty, breathing the
fresh air, hearing the birds
sing, and feeling the sun,
breeze (and sometimes rain)
against my skin while attempting to paint a masterpiece. While outside I study
the play of light on landscape. In the studio I favor
aerial scenes of Indiana and
the Ohio River, capturing
the sense of flight on canvas. The river is a favorite
subject of mine, its bends
and river tugs decorate my
canvases. My impressionist
work is filled with light and
color, and generates the
positive energy of creation.

Eberle is led to make art by his desire to

capture the earths disappearing beauty
and to express his spiritual growth, both
through the act of creation. He is constantly looking for fulfilling ways of using his life
and his talent. You absorb influence from
some people and reflect it back to others,
like the sun, he says. What he learns is
meaningless unless he is able to pass it
on. Eberles philosophy is much like that of
another painter, Sir Winston Churchill, who
said, You make a living by what you get;
you make a life by what you give. Now
a sought-after workshop instructor, Eberle
enjoys sharing his knowledge with his students and peers.
Eberles works are held by public and corporate institutions as well as private individuals, including the private collections of two
Indiana governors and several corporate
executives. They may be seen at libraries
and educational institutions throughout Indiana. Eberle is represented by the following
Indiana galleries: Hoosier Salon in Carmel,
Sigmans Fine Art in Indianapolis, Castle
Gallery in Ft. Wayne, and the Brown County
Artist Guild and Brown County Art Gallery in
Nashville.

Larry Fentz

A Stand of Honor

Biography

Artist Statement

Larry Fentz is a local artist residing in East Central Indiana who pursued
watercolor painting intently for many years while raising his family and working
as a professional artist for the Garfield comic strip for over 30 years. In the
mid-70s Larry took weekly watercolor classes for two years with Luke Buck,
artist, instructor, mentor, and now close friend. As a result, watercolor painting
became a passion that Larry has pursued ever since. He has also had the honor
and privilege of studying under such renowned watercolor favorites as the late,
great Zoltan Szabo, Sterling Edwards, Tony Couch, Frank Webb, Don Getz, and
others. Larry is not only influenced by his many workshop instructors, mentors,
and artist peers, but he is also always learning and acquires inspiration from his
own surroundings, photo reference, and extended travels. Larry has exhibited
and sold paintings in juried shows such as the Hoosier Salon in Indianapolis, the
Castle Gallery in Fort Wayne, Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie, and 308
Gallery in Muncie. He is a member of the Hoosier Salon, the Watercolor Society
of Indiana, and the Kentucky Watercolor Society. His paintings are also vested in
several private collections.

Growing up in Central Indiana, I have come to

know and love the rural landscape, having worked
on several farms in my youth. Old barns,
fencerows, and fields of baled hay always caught
my eye. The broken string of farmhouses, silos,
and patches of woods on the horizon catching the
afternoon sun created special moments that
eventually inspired me to capture them with paint.

Biography

Artist Statement

Penny French-Deal is known for her contemporary

impressionistic style using warm, vibrant colors. Her
award-winning oil paintings have been seen in numerous
juried competitions. Holding a degree in Interior Design from Indiana University, Penny is influenced by the
work of American Impressionists, Edward Pottast and
John Singer Sargent; as well as the French Impressionists. It was life of growing up on a farm in Indiana that
embedded in her an appreciation for nature and began a
lifelong journey to capture the essence of her surroundings. Traveling throughout the United States and Europe
furthers her depth of inspiration.

One would not classify my work as a literal statement of the subject. Rather, it is an impressionistic interpretation giving freedom for the viewer to
take pleasure in the message versus a definitive portrayal. There is such
excitement in defining shapes, light and color variations and transferring
those images to canvas in such a manner that respects the subject, yet,
allows for my own creative style to flow through. The mixing of colors, the
thought process of balance, complementary colors, lights and darks is a
course of development in each piece. Compositions may be in my mind for
many months just waiting for the opportunity to be translated to canvas. My
desire is to interpret everyday surroundings in a manner that brings warmth
and vibrancy to the viewer. Painting is an extension of what is within me.
