since the songs lie beneath the visual surfaces and above ambient
noises, I hope to present them in a way that others will detect the soul
or experience that makes my subject worthy as an artwork. Why or
what it is that beckons to me seems to be some connection emanating
from the subject itself. While this may sound a bit of a stretch, I
nevertheless feel compelled to express my understanding of it on
canvas. While my efforts are meant to be representational I am not
after a photo likeness. I want something that sees beyond the visual and
auditory noise. I want to capture the songs that resonate within and give
them visual expression Such songs can be exciting or tranquil, happy or
sad or sometimes painfully disturbing. Sometimes these songs suggest
a theme for me to pursue. When my viewers appreciate my art then I
know that I have made a successful translation.

Ive been painting since 1987, primarily in watercolor, but I do enjoy experimenting
with other media. In the beginning years, I struggled to learn as much as I could on
my own, but it wasnt until I began to study with watercolorists whose work I admired, and my four years at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana with Rod
Crossman, that I found the fundamental tools to transfer my vision to paper.
I love the watercolor process, the challenge and the unpredictability of this medium.
It has given me many years of pleasure. Knowing that others enjoy my work, being
able to share what I do, is the ultimate reward for me.
My work hangs in private and corporate collections throughout this country and

Biography
Charlene Browns love of the visual arts was nurtured from a young age by her grandmother, who
was a high school art teacher, artist, and kindred
spirit. Throughout Charlenes formative years,
her grandmother encouraged her to experiment
with different techniques and mediums, making
each new project fresh and exciting and magical.
Charlene went on to earn a Bachelor Degree in
Fine Arts from Earlham College, and following
graduation utilized her creative energies teaching
art to children and young adults. The Renaissance
Gallery in Carmel, Indiana, launched her career as
a fine artist in May 2012. Charlenes paintings and
drawings combine elements of realistic, impressionistic, and abstract techniques. Her sensitive
portrayals of people and nature are inspired by a
wide variety of past and present masters,
including Rembrandt for his use of light and shadow, Andrew Wyeth for his attention to the abstract quality of line and mass, and Susan Lyon for
the dramatic and tender quality of her drawings.
Art critic Brian Sherwin, editor of The Art Edge,
offered some thoughts about Charlenes figurative
paintings and drawings, stating, Charlene M.
Browns figurative work offers viewers an emotional powder keg. The visual power of her work
is simply stunning to observe. Her images, when
viewed collectively, bombard viewers with solid
observations of joy and sorrow evealing the essence of the human spirit. Charlene continues to
teach children and adults out of her home studio
in Carmel, Indiana, as well as working daily to
hone her skills as an artist.

I enjoy the physical act of making art, and
working in different mediums affords me
challenges and pleasures in each. Be it
the drag or tooth of charcoal on textured
papers, the ability to push and manipulate
oil paint in numerous ways on the canvas,
or the loose and broad application of pastels in building layers of color on sanded
board-papers, each medium is exciting and
demanding in its own right. Every piece, be
it a commissioned work, a gallery piece, or a
show piece starts with some vision or story I
want to share with my viewer. The communication may be as simple as the description
of light striking a face in a sculptural and
exquisite way, or depicting the opaque lights
and transparent darks on a still life object
that celebrate and build the beauty unique
to a seemingly mundane thing. My commissioned works add another dimension to the
creative process, as then I work my clients
vision into the final look of a proposed work.

I have always loved to draw and paint. My mother, who was very artistic, taught
me the basics of sketching while I was still in grade school. She encouraged my
creativity. I am so grateful to have had her love and support for my artwork. In
1984, I started my own business. It was completely unrelated to art, so I had to
vent my creative impulses through illustrating newspaper ads, creating window
graphics for local businesses, and doing watercolor portraits in my spare time. A
career change in 1994 afforded me an opportunity to devote more time to art. I
was able to study oil painting with Carin Hebensreit at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, specifically to learn the glazing techniques of the Old Masters. This has
brought out a richness and depth to my work which was previously unrealized.
Over the years, I have completed many commissions for both public and private
collections. I had my first solo show in 1998 at Masterpiece Gallery, Cincinnati
Ohio. In addition I also have shown works at Solar Flare Gallery, Rising Sun, IN,
Chelsea Fine Art, Lake Forest, IL, and Brown County Art Gallery, Nashville, IN.

Steves informal art training began years ago
when his dad would take him out to sketch and
paint in Indiana. Those early times instilled in him
a love for art and nature. Fine art was put on the
back burner while he pursued his formal education in graphic design and illustration in Colorado.
After four decades of creating award winning
communications in Colorado and Indiana for a
variety of business sectors, Steve concluded that
it was time to return to his roots in fine art.
Today Steve has work in collections from Maine to
Colorado. In addition, his work has been shown,
sold, and garnered awards in competitive exhibitions in Indiana, Colorado, Texas, and California.

One would not classify my work as a literal statement of the subject. Rather, it is an impressionistic interpretation giving freedom for the viewer to
take pleasure in the message versus a definitive portrayal. There is such
excitement in defining shapes, light and color variations and transferring
those images to canvas in such a manner that respects the subject, yet,
allows for my own creative style to flow through. The mixing of colors, the
thought process of balance, complementary colors, lights and darks is a
course of development in each piece. Compositions may be in my mind for
many months just waiting for the opportunity to be translated to canvas. My
desire is to interpret everyday surroundings in a manner that brings warmth
and vibrancy to the viewer. Painting is an extension of what is within me.
