If I were asked to talk about Audio Visual
distribution, the first thing i'd talk about would
be modulation. So converting an AV signal
into a TV signal and relying on TV tuners
to receive the signal. It's the solution that
has been used by new home builders for
decades and despite all the advances in the
technologiesmodulation is still the go-to
solution.
Some quick facts:
1. It's available in 3 flavours: analogue, SD
digital and HD digital
2. It will support resolutions of up to 1080p

Foxtel is a common video source and is

natively 720p, so HD. Using a SD modulator
is fine still. We have found that some SD
modulators can be fuzzy with subtitles being
difficult to read. Obviously these ones should
be avoided! To take advantage of the full
resolution, Foxtel should ideally be distributed
via an HD modulator. If your TVs don't
support MPEG4, you'll need a modulator
that supports the lot, like a Resi-Linx single
channel HD1000DM, HD2000DM or 4
channel HD4001.

How many sources?
Most modulators are single source or quad
(4) source. The models that have more
channels tend to be cheaper per source.
The 4ch Resi-Linx works out to be 15%
cheaper per channel when compared to
the single channel Resi-Linx

If your source is HD, the results will

be much better.

To expanding upon the above, lets dig deeper
and in-turn make a better choice for the
particular job.
The analogue, SD & HD
Generally, HD is the best and most expensive,
analogue is the lowest quality, but still the
biggest seller due to price, so how do you
choose?
If it's a low quality source like analogue
CCTV camera system, consider analogue
or SD digital. The reason why you might not
select analogue is due to most new TVs now
only supporting digital (the new Wintal TVs
support both). If they don't support analogue,
you'll need an analogue tuner (Pro2 ADM5),
which is yet another box to hide!

Modulating Full HD
Manufacturers of both TV tuners and
modulators have been pushing the envelope
to the point where we tested even [low
priced] Wintal TVs with a modulated BluRay signal (Resi-Linx HD1600 modulator) at
1080p and each panel received and played
the signal. Even HD panels like the 32" Wintal
(32LED15HD) were able to display Blu-Ray
to the TV's maximum potential (1366 x 768)
without changing the modulator's output
resolution. At best guess, over half the new
TV panels can display full-HD and all the
TVs known to us will display 720p or 1080i
resolutions. This is the maximum resolution
of Foxtel.

When you first install a modulator, you have

to select a free channel. Many modulators
are UHF and will broadcast from channels
21 up to 69. The idea is that you check
out what channels are occupied and then
select a free channel for the modulator. So
from the Radio Parts building, digital TV
might be broadcasting on channel block
E and therefore channels 47, 48, 49, 50
and 51. Maybe the community tv channel
is on channel 32. Most TV tuners won't
pick up 21 to 27, so avoid those. So for the
modulator, you might pick channels 27-31,
33-46, 52-69. You should use a TV meter
like a Digiair Pro T2, which can display the
full TV spectrum and allows you to check out
individual channels.

IR support
Centrally located sources, like Pay TV boxes,
often need to be controlled from each TV.
We made mention of new home builders that
want Foxtel in each room. These guys want
Foxtel to appear as just another TV channel.
From there, you pick up the Foxtel remote
and start using it. Simple!
Pro2, Clipsal and Resi-Linx are the only 3

A quad SD modulator (Resi-Linx RLDM4000)

can pack all 4 video sources on to a single
channel like channel 35. The HD version,
HD4001, requires 2 sequential channels, like
35 and 36. Once you select the channel(s),
you need to retune the TV and scan for the
new channels. The most common issue we
have with Resi-Linx modulators is that they
will be on channel 21 as the factory default. If
the installer fails to change this channel, the
TVs tuner is unlikely to find this channel.

Affordability & scalability

Changing the output channel is a matter of

selecting a different number from the
drop-down menu.
Analogue systems will also require free
channels, but are far less efficient, meaning
that you need at least one channel of
separation (VSB modulators like the Kingray
KVM110 are an exception). This makes
channel selection a little more difficult. So
for a quad analogue modulator in the above
example, you might use channels 35, 38, 41,
44.
Our only analogue modulator that allows
adjacent channel operation.

We add IR capabilities and a touch more signal

(3dB) for the RFD2169IR. This is a cheap and

broadcasts, we use MPEG2.

The first distinction is that we get to charge
more for a commercial modulator! But the
real question is, why would you pay a higher
price?!
First, its not so black and white. Commercial
jobs tend to be more difficult, more channels
are occupied, higher losses exist and lower
tolerances are accepted. If you read about
the models below, you'll see that we have 5
domestic Pro2 modulators, light commercial

SD Digital Modulators: Kingray KDM101,

Resi-Linx RLDM1102 & RLDM4000
All the above modulators allow for channels
to be named (i.e. CCTV, Foxtel or Blu-Ray).
They support a max resolution of 576i and
picture quality is good.

If you want more inputs (meaning everything!)

and support for all digital TVs, (MPEG2/4)

Kingray MD100 (light commercial)

The MD100 Kingray alternatives cost more,
but offer useful features like the option of
UHF or VHF models, true stereo sound,
tough die-cast enclosures, optional rack
mount, gain control and even optional remote
powering. We sell lots of units and even
if you're big enough to buy directly from
Kingray, we guarantee that our pricing is the
same or lower.

They support remote setup, meaning

they can be programmed from a laptop,
making the setup process super fast.

Standard splitters have diodes meaning

among other things that voltages cannot
pass in both directions. We currently have
4 splitters that support IR. The Clipsal and
Resi-Linx RLRF380 hubs both take an
antenna input and a modulator input. They
are amplified to account for the loss of the
splitter. The power for the splitter comes from
the modulator. The hubs support 8 outputs.
That can be increased using the other 2 IR
splitters, the ChannelPlus 2512 (2-way) or
