Th e Pa sto r s Not e s
Ive got some good news, and some not-so-good
news:
The first piece of good news is that Lent begins
in February. Thats good news first because of the
third annual Fat Tuesday Pancake Supper & Variety Show to be held Tuesday, Feb. 17th beginning
on 6 PM. This is a fundraiser for the Youth Mission
Trip, so the youth will be preparing and serving a
high-carb, high-fat dinner of pancakes and sausages to indulge in before the austere season of Lent
begins. Donations for dinner will be gratefully accepted. Then after dinner - the Variety Show! If
youve attended either of the past two shows, you
know how much fun this will be. And if you want
to present an act of some kind, please contact
Erin Regan.
Then beginning February 25th and continuing
each Wednesday through March 25 , well have
our Lenten Wednesday Simple Supper and Study.
Well begin at 6 PM with a pot-luck supper and
then at 6:30, spend an hour studying a curriculum
based on Philip Yanceys wonderful book Vanishing Grace.
The second piece of good news is that you can
now give to the church electronically using a credit card. Go to the church website
(www.centralonthesquare.org) and click on the
Donate button on the upper right side of the
home page, and you will be directed to a church
Paypal page to make your donation. Some church
members who are giving electronically have said
they miss the act of putting their offering in the
plate during the worship service. One suggested
we create cards of some kind to put in the plate

indicating that the person is an electronic giver.

To that end, we have created Electronic Giver
cards. If you would like a supply, please contact
church secretary Roberta Lawyer and well put
them in your church mailbox. They will also be
available in the back of Friendship Hall and Sanctuary during worship services.
The not-so-good news concerns recent child
protection legislation passed by the Pennsylvania state government (House bill 435). The law
will require two things of Central. First, that we
develop, adopt and enforce a Child Protection
Policy that governs ALL interactions with children and youth in the church. Among other
things, this policy will require there to be two
adults in all classes attended by children and
youth; that there be windows in the doors of all
rooms where there are children; and that everyone who works with children and youth is now a
mandatory reporter, required to report suspected child abuse. Second, the law requires
everyone who serves in any way in our ministries to children and youth to undergo a series
of background checks.
Because of the far-reaching effects of this
law, the Session appointed a Task Force to develop our Child Protection Policy and to develop
and carry out a process for getting all our teachers and helpers through the background checks.
We are required to complete all the background
checks by June 30th .

Church Family
Thank you....
Dear Central Church Family,
The lovely poinsettia which I received from the
church during the holiday season contributed to the
holiday spirit with their bright colors. Thank you
very much for your thoughtfulness in remembering
me.
Sincerely,
Selma Thomson

Thank you so very much for the beautiful flowers

you sent to me. The carnations are still blooming.
Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Dorothy Burkholder

With gratitude, Central has received a letter of

JOY VILLAGE UPDATE

Adapted from an article by Rudy Miller:
In November 2014, two teams of teachers
traveled to the tea estates surrounding the Nazareth Hospital, to search for tea pickers children
who have never attended school. Even though
Kenyan law provides education for all, lack of
money for books or uniforms prevents many
from attending school.
The teachers found 83 children, from age 6 to
13, who werent attending school. Typical was
Sylvia, age 8, who was rejected by her birth
mother and forced to be a house girl for another
family. No wages, no education, no lovejust a
blanket and a little food.
Each child was invited for an interview to the
Allamano School, part of the Tree of Life organization, as are Nazareth Hospital and Joy Village. What would they think of a school, a completely new environment? As one 6-year-old girl
asked when she looked around the classroom,
Can I sit there and start learning? And that is
now her desk.
Let us never forget to pray for Joy Village,
Nazareth Hospital, the Allamano School, and all
the institutions that are part of the Tree of Life
organization. May God continue to give the
medical staff and the educators the wisdom,
stamina and courage to shepherd children whom
most of the world has forgotten.

The Pastors Notes

We certainly will comply with the law, and hope it will help curtail the awful abuse of children.
The most pressing need presented by the new law is more teachers and helpers to work with
our children and youth. If we do not have two adults in each classroom, we cannot conduct
Sunday School for our children and youth. Please be in prayer for this critical need, and be listening for Gods still small voice - he may call you to serve!
P.S. - one more piece of good news. The Parish Visitor position is now funded in the 2015
church budget and we will start the search to fill this position shortly.

Music Ministry News!!!

Feeling those winter blues? Well its
the perfect opportunity to start singing with the choir or ringing handbells! Warm up with us on Wednesday nights, share a few laughs, and
make some music. Were always
open for new people to join us!

Kids Choir will be singing

in both services on
Sunday February 1st!

My prayer for February at Central is that each of us take an ownership in

our worship. Our God is worthy of all our praise and joy. I pray that as we
come to worship each Sunday we seek Jesus, honor and bless God, and
encounter the Holy Spirit in a profound way! Blessings and peace, Dani

God is sheer being itself--Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very
being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.

SAVE THE DATE ~ ORGAN DEDICATORY RECITAL
We are very excited to be able to announce an organ recital Sunday, September 27, 2015
at 3:00pm in our sanctuary by National AGO (American Guild of Organists)
President, JOHN WALKER. Mr. Walker has played our organ in a recital in 2004 and
then in 2006 he also played at Wilson College in recital. He took his first organ lesson
60 years ago in Chambersburg so he is no stranger to our area.
This recital will dedicate the latest additions to our Casavant Pipe Organ. Its 34 original
ranks of pipes have now had 9 more digital ranks added in memory of John Wingert making it a total of 43
ranks. This is also the 75th anniversary of the original installation of the Casavant.
Please put this date of SEPTEMBER 27 on your calendars now and watch for more details as we get closer
to this date.

Were looking for

volunteers!
Here at Central, we love and value our children and youth. It is our goal that everyone who comes
through our doors finds this to be a safe and welcoming place. Due to the recent crimes against children
in our state, Pennsylvania has recently passed laws that strive to protect children and youth. These laws
include more strict background checks for employees and volunteers and new rules on mandatory reporting of suspected abuse. There are also guidelines to minimize the opportunity for abuse to take
place. These include having windows in doors to provide a clear line of sight and the 2 adult rule -which states that there are two adults present wherever there are children and youth.
So now you know the motivation behind this article! We need to comply with these regulations so that
we can continue to minister to children and youth. In order to do that,

We Need You!
Teachers and leaders are already in place.

Now we need the 2nd adult in the room!

Requirements? You must love J esus! You must love childr en and youth! You must be willing to
go through the mandatory background screenings and clearances.
When and where can you volunteer?
