Somali American Parent Association Receives $10,000 AT&T

Contribution to Support After School Programs
AT&T Donation Will Support Academic Youth Tutoring, College Prep and ACT Prep
Programs for About 80 East African & Somali Students in Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS, Thursday, January 29, 2015 The Somali American Parent Association (SAPA) received a $10,000
AT&T contribution today to support after school programs for East African and Somali students during a check
presentation before the organizations board meeting in Minneapolis.
The AT&T donation will support after school academic youth tutoring, college prep and ACT Prep programs for
approximately 80 East African and Somali students in grades 9-12 who attend schools in Minneapolis and the metro
area.
Through our after school programs, our goal is to help East African students do better academically, develop
teamwork, responsibility and leadership goals, and build confidence, said Mohamed Mohamud, SAPA Executive
Director. Access to college is the gateway to other opportunities in life, and our mission is to empower East African
students to pursue a secondary education. We are grateful for this AT&T donation that will further help students have
the resources and support they need to succeed in that pursuit.
SAPA assists Somali families in Minnesota in building and strengthening their capacity to fully navigate and participate
in American school systems, to be knowledgeable about educational opportunities, and to be supportive of their
childrens academic progress. Minneapolis has the highest concentration of Somali residents in the United States, with
over 4,000 Somali students attending Minneapolis Public Schools and another 3,500 at charter schools in the metro
area, according to SAPA.
AT&T Minnesota is committed to helping advance the education of our young people by preparing them for success in
college and careers, said Paul Weirtz, president of AT&T Minnesota. We are proud to support SAPAs efforts to
provide East African students with the tools and support they need to pursue post-secondary education.
As a company, AT&T has a long-standing commitment to helping advance education through donations to local
education organizations and through the AT&T Aspire program. One of the nations largest corporate initiatives, AT&T
Aspire is committed to helping more students graduate from high school ready for college and careers.

It is great to see company partners like AT&T stepping up to support education efforts, said State Senator Kari
Dziedzic. Education is key to our childrens future and our Minnesota economy.
Students in the SAPA program participate in presentations and lectures, small break away sessions, directed academic
ACT prep, field trips to nearby universities and technical schools, and career shadowing sessions. College prep
activities are directed toward helping students complete the ACT or SAT, as well as complete a college portfolio.
We are fortunate to have a wonderful organization like SAPA helping provide tutoring and college preparatory support
for East African and Somali students who need guidance in setting goals and preparing for their future, said State
Representative Phyllis Kahn. It takes a community all working together, including businesses like AT&T, to help
advance education.
