Dear Readers,
As we anticipate the future its always a good idea to take some time to consider
our past and how far we have come. Hopefully the majority of our experiences
were good ones, and we can celebrate those and be happy about them. Perhaps
there were some experiences that were not the best. Hopefully we are at a point
now where we can be grateful that we got through them. Even those experiences provided a learning curve from which we could become stronger and wiser.
On the other hand, maybe some of us are still shouldering the burden of some
of these negative experiences. One thing to keep in mind is that we are never
alone in any situation be it good or bad. God is always there. Sometimes we
can get so wrapped up in the drama of it all that we allow our emotions, egos
and need to control things intensify the situation or keep it going. When we find
ourselves in a valley like this it could help to turn the situation around if we step
back and focus on Christ and a prayer for clarity. Even when we dont seem to
understand whats going on instantly, we can rest in the reality that God does.
Knowing this, we can be in the right state of mind to receive direction on how to
move forward, if that is His will. We may need to hold on, or in some cases...
just let it go. God wants us to be happy and to experience joy in our lives. If we
are constantly suffering, something needs to change. Some things may require
us to take action and sometimes we just need to get out of our own way so that
God can move. When we allow Him to take control, we can take the right steps
on the path to victory.

I want to do something different with my hair. I know that I want a weave

but I see so many girls with the long, silky look. Its cute and all but I
have a really funky style, and I dont want to look like everyone else.
We totally get you! You like to stand out and celebrating your individuality
is always a cool look! If you want a weave, go for a wild, textured one. It
doesnt have to be long and swinging. Go to a local wig shop and try on a
few with wave and tight curl patterns to get some ideas.
Whats a good style for relaxed hair that I can try that wont require heat?
Im really trying to lay low on heat tools for a while.
This is a good idea. Hair needs a break from time to time. After the next
time you wash and condition your hair, apply a leave-in conditioner while
it is still wet. Twist your hair into Bantu knots all over (like Lauryn Hill used
to wear). Let them air-dry and go about life as normal. If youre not a fan
of the Bantu knots, you can take them down after letting them dry and you
will have a beautiful pattern to your hair! This also works for natural and
transitioning hair.

While transitioning from relaxed to natural, I wore a lot of weaves. Its

two years later and my relaxer has just about grown out. Im thinking
about chopping the rest off, but Im afraid of what my friends and family
will say. Your advice?

and hair will help when its time to figure out what kind of hair routine and

Hair on the scalp grows six inches per year. Every hair on your head is always in
a different stage of hair growth; any random number of hairs will be in one of these
three stages: anagen, catagen, and telogen.
Anagen is the active or growth phase of the hair. During this phase the hair grows
about one centimeter every 28 days. The catagen phase is a transitional stage where
growth stops and the outer root sheath shrinks and attaches to the root of the hair.
Telogen is the resting phase that usually lasts for about 100 days for hair on the
scalp. During this phase, the hair follicle is completely at rest and the club hair, or hair
that has stopped growing, is completely formed. About 25 to 100 telogen hairs are
shed normally each day, so remember that some daily shedding is completely normal.
Learning the foundation of hair growth can help when choosing the right hair

I overheard a lady talking about ombre hair coloring.

What does that mean?
This is typically a style where your roots are dark and
then blend gradually into light colors at the tips. The
way this style looks will depend on how bold or subtle
you want to go. You can either have black or medium
brown roots and lighter brown or blonde ends. Or you
can have your roots platinum or blonde and fade it into
darker brown shades.
I want a lighter color so bad but I am terrified. Is
there a way to lighten my hair a little using an athome remedy with cinnamon?
When using any at-home treatment always consult
with a hair professional first to get their added advice.
There are a number of at-home coloring kits that work
well if you follow the instructions. Cinnamon can
lighten your hair. You must be sure you dont have
a cinnamon allergy. Remember, results may vary so
please consider that risk; a skin and patch test should
be done before you apply the cinnamon formulation all
over your hair. This method involves combining a little
cinnamon and water in a bowl, which is thoroughly
mixed to create a paste. The hair is shampooed, then
rinsed. A conditioner is then worked throughout the
hair. Wearing gloves, the cinnamon paste is applied to
sections of the hair and gently combed through. The
paste is left on for 45 minutes or a few hours depending
on how light the desired hair color is. The hair is then
shampooed and rinsed.
I have always wanted highlights but I am so afraid of
damaging my hair. Do you have any suggestions?
We totally understand because hair color is a big
decision to make and can be costly to maintain. Start by
investing in a few clip-in highlights. This way you can
see if you like the color, and you can get accustomed to
it before making a permanent decision. There are a ton
of extension and clip-in lines out there. The best thing
to do is to go to your local beauty supply and ask them
to help you pick the best color, and get their advice on
what texture will blend with your hair.
I am only 28-years-old and I already have patches of
white hair. Is that normal?
It can be very normal especially when its due to
heredity. You can choose to embrace your natural
beauty and surround yourself with people who
accept you for who you are. You can also choose to

I am a 25-year-old African American woman who has

extremely thick, coarse hair. I prefer to keep my hair natural
and slicked down into a neat ponytail for my job. I use a ton of
hair gels and other styling products. I have recently developed
constant itching and flaking along my hairline. Please give me
some hair advice, Dr. Maclin, because I enjoy reading your
information in Hype Hair!
Im glad you reached out. Many ladies may be dealing with similar concerns. Given that
you just recently started to have itching and flaking along your hairline, you may be
allergic to ingredients in new hair products youre using. So definitely stop using all of the
skin and hair products that youve used within the last two months.
Because your hairline is near thinner facial skin which is more sensitive, it can be
affected faster than other, thicker parts of your scalp. It is typically the fragrance that
causes the majority of allergic skin reactions. However, there are other ingredients that can
be causing the problem as well.
An at-home way to try to figure out the most likely allergy ingredient is to gather all of
your recently used hair products. Compare the first five ingredients in the newer products
to the first five in the older products. Whatever ingredient is not in the older products is the
most likely candidate.
In the future, try to use fragrance-free personal care products. To help immediately calm
your itching and flaking, pick up from the drugstore a Hydrocortisone ointment without
any added ingredients. Apply a pea-sized amount to your hairline and rub it in thoroughly
three to four times a day until you start to feel some relief. If its not better within a month,
please check with your doctor for a clinical evaluation. Make sure to avoid any hair
products with those possible allergic ingredients.

I am sad to learn of your recent hair thinning. A few potential reasons for thinning hair
are excessive chemical use, low iron, thyroid issues and reactions to new medications.
Because your hair grows from inside your body, topical products alone are not effective.

up and braided. I can wear it down and wavy, but again I hate
the time it takes. I can do my makeup in 5 minutes my hair??? Not
sa much.

When we last spoke with Taraji, filming for
Empire was just getting underway and she
couldnt have been more ecstatic about her latest
project. Its very exciting, and my character
Cookie is a contender. She is so much fun to

mother of one son finds time to balance her full
schedule with the simple things. For me, it is always
family first, and Im blessed to have a career that lets

The songstress, who just released an awesome new album entitled
Incomparable, brought her A-game to our studios for this exclusive Hype Hair
magazine photo shoot.
Faith has always experimented with bold and beautiful hair color tones. In
fact, when she first stepped on the scene with the unforgettable club banger
You Used To Love Me, she sported a bombshell blonde bob that looked
amazing on her. These days, her long and luxe red coiffure is the style of
choice and the look is absolutely stunning!
Faith chooses a variety of styling methods to create her red carpet looks;
lately, the star, who is natural, opts for styling techniques that are convenient
for her busy lifestyle. She said, I wear a full or partial weave a lot of the time
because I work out and its much easier to maintain while juggling home,
work, and working out.
When it comes to styling her hair, the busy mom prefers to keep it classic
with a touch of glamour. In response to our question about the styles she
likes best she shared, My favorite hairstyles are bone straight looks or
natural waves parted down the middle.
For maintaining the health of her hair underneath the weaves, Faith uses
products like natural botanical oils or products infused with them; almond oil
is one of her favorite products for keeping her hair moisturized and radiant

Dont paint your nails near a fan.
That will create air bubbles in the
polish. You could pull it off as nail
art, but youll probably just be more
disappointed.
Make your nail color pop by first
applying a coat of white polish (and
letting it dry first) before coating your
nails with your chosen nail color.
Always file your nails after clipping,
and make sure to do so in one
direction. If you file back and forth, you
can cause cracks in your nails.
Theres a lot of controversy
surrounding the cuticle. Instead of
cutting off the cuticle, a lot of experts
believe that the best thing to do is just
push back the cuticle. Cutting off the
cuticle will only allow it to grow back
and you risk cutting or damaging your

Always use rubber gloves when
washing dishes and cleaning. The
chemicals in cleaners always damage
hands and nails even if you dont have
a fresh manicure.
Moisturize your hands and nails.

two fabulous designs. Heres how to nail them!
APPLE NAILS
The tech can use a clear tip or sculpt. These nails are
sculpted on forms.
Apple nails are all embedded art. Nothing is 3-dimensional.
1. A super thin layer of CuccioPro Clear Acrylic is applied to the
nails and free edges.
2. While its wet, apply from the Cina Assorted Glitter Kit the
Green Reflective Holographic pieces to the free edge and fade up
the nail plate.
3. Encapsulate the entire nail (one nail at a time) from cuticle to freeedge with CuccioPro Clear Acrylic.
4. While it is still in the molding stage (not wet but not yet hard), take
a piece of netting and press it down into the acrylic. This leaves an
indented netting pattern in the acrylic. Repeat this onto each nail.

with the CuccioPro monomer and fill all the indentations with black acrylic. Dont
worry if it gets a bit messy on the surface. This will file off while you file, leaving

The tech can use a clear tip or sculpt.These nails are sculpted on forms. Fish nails are all
embedded art. Nothing is three-dimensional.
Follow steps 1-3 above.
4. Finish filing to a high shine and seal with topcoat or gel sealer.
5. Using Cina Candy For Nails, apply three dimensional flowers to the surface of the nails. Allow
to harden. Do not clear coat these.The matte effect of the acrylic is more realistic looking.

top weaver and the best hair, its costly. How long can I leave a weave in my hair?
The length of time that you can leave your weave or extensions in varies. It can be anywhere between 4 and 12 weeks. However, this depends upon how the hair is maintained
as well as the natural growth of the hair. To get the most out of your weave, visit your professional hairstylist regularly. Maintenance is key, and we advise seeing your stylist every two weeks as you would with your own hair. Your

hair frequently, I ALWAYS

Loni Love.
Even with her busy schedule, she
always manages to look the part, with
pristine ensembles, makeup and, of
course, beautiful hairstyles.
We chatted with Adrienne to get the
scoop on her thoughts on hair. Here
is what she shared about the key to
achieving a healthy head of hair:
I think a lot of women try to do too
much to their hair. When I had longer
hair I was obsessed with a bun. It was
the healthiest thing to do for
my hair. Instead of using gel,
I would use aloe vera gel,
and that was my slick back.
It keeps your hair really
moisturized. Throw a leavein conditioner in there.
Get into a routine. Get
your hair done once a week
and leave it alone. Wrap it
before you go to bed at night,
try not to put heat on it, and moisturize.

Do a treatment once a week. Even if you
cant go and get your hair done, take
the time once a week and say, Okay,
you know what? Maybe Ill get up an
hour earlier on Saturday. Let me put
a treatment in my hair. Or, the night
before, sleep with a treatment, wake up,
wash it out. Do whatever your routine is,
and make sure that you keep it consistent
for the rest of the week.
Ive also learned not to bleach my hair
so much. There are little tricks to the trade.
