THE CONTINUOUS MIRACLE OF CHANGE

Are you going to heaven?
I think so.
Will you let me show you, from the Bible, how you can be sure?
Several decades ago, this was the gist of a conversation held between a CSSM Ministries church-planting pastor and a couple who
had recently been attending their new, small church in rural Manitoba. After hearing of the Good News of Jesus Christ and of the assurance of eternal life that
He gives to us through faith in Him, the couple knelt down in their kitchen and prayed to
accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.
Now, decades later, though her husband has passed away, the godly woman continues to
support CSSM Ministries through her prayers and financial means. She continues to give so
that others might hear about this Good News; she is now the one asking of those whom God
places in her path, Are you going to heaven?
In a nutshell, I believe that captures what CSSM Ministries is all about, bringing the Gospel
to those who have the least opportunity to hear the life-saving message of Jesus and to help
those who accept Christs message become fully devoted disciples as they serve in His Church.
Over the past month, I have had the privilege of hearing these kinds of testimonies of how
CSSM Ministries both camps and church plants have been used by God to change peoples
lives.
Change, transition and new horizons have become somewhat of a mantra at CSSM Ministries over the past few months. Some of the highlighted changes and transitions have been:
Bill and Bev McCaskell taking on new leadership roles as the CSSM Ministries
National Director Couple
Judy and I becoming the new Manitoba Provincial Director Couple.
Moving our Provincial and National staff to one centralized office location
at 200 189 Henderson Hwy, increasing efficiency and reducing our overhead costs.
But all these changes cannot compare to the changed life that God brings when a person
who is far from Him comes to know Him in a personal way. I was one of those who for a
time chose to walk far from Gods way, but by His grace, I am no longer what I once was! PTL!
As you turn the pages of this latest edition of the Manitoba Missionary, it is our prayer that
your heart be blessed and encouraged as you read the stories of those whose lives have been
transformed by the power of Jesus working in and through the ministries of CSSM.
A project such as this does not just happen, and there are a number of thank-you notes that
Id like to highlight.
Thank-you to the sponsors of the business community who have partnered with us to
bring you this latest edition of the Manitoba Missionary. It is their gracious support which
enables us to bring you these stories of Gods transforming power.
Thank-you to Elanna, Harold and Bill for all your efforts in bringing this project to fruition.
And thank-you to you, the generous supporters of our CSSM Ministry here in Manitoba.
We could not do the work that God has called us to without your prayer and financial support.
May the Lord bless you with His abundance as you have blessed us.

A Day in the Life

As hosts of the CSSM concert tour, one thing Natalie & I
have enjoyed right from the beginning is being able to visit
the guest music groups in their homes after the tour. Its been a
privilege to visit the homes of the Daae Family (Bromhead, SK),
the Browns (LeMars, IA), the Hunters (Shaunavon, SK), and the
Lumber River Quartet (Lumberton, NC).
After the Lumber River tour of 2007, I travelled into North
Carolina the following September. Lumber River just happened
to be heading off on a tour to Alabama. They asked me if Id like
to go along. Does Billy Graham have a quiet time? was my
response.
Well, the tour was not without its hitches. Youll find evidence of some of the goings-on at http://tinyurl.com/LRQinAL.
After a Saturday night concert, we arrived in Tuscaloosa and
stayed in the Wal-Mart parking lot. The next morning, Glenn
West (the group leader) tried to start the bus to head to our next
engagement, but to no avail the batteries were dead. In spite
of some valiant efforts, we couldnt get the bus going. Eventually, two vehicles came from the church we were headed to and
loaded up the sound gear and the CDs, as well as ourselves and
our personal belongings. As the parishioners patiently waited,
we quickly set up the sound equipment and product tables,
then got dressed for the concert. At this point, Glenn discovered that, in the darkness of the bus closet, he had picked up the
wrong shirt. Instead of having the shirt for his 510 frame, hed
mistakenly taken the shirt belonging to 69 Randy Armentrout!
The sleeves and hem of the shirt were hanging down to Glenns
knees!
Fortunately, the pastor of the church had an extra shirt that
fit Glenn perfectly. Okay... the yellow shirt clashed a bit with his
suit, but we werent about to say anything.
Harold Giesbrecht has a love for God, his beautiful wife Natalie,
seeing children and youth come to know Jesus, and a well-timed
joke. You can catch him weekly on Heart of the South, a two hour
radio program featuring the finest in southern gospel music.

WORK CREW

BOSS
FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS, KIMMEE HAS
SPENT HER SUMMERS AT CAMP, LEARNING
HOW GOD s STRENGTH IS SHOWN IN HER
WEAKNESS.

My adventures at Roseau River Bible Camp started in 2007

when my parents, Rod and Rose Reimer, became the directors
there. It was my dream to someday be a cabin leader because
of the amazing leaders I had at Roseau over the years when I
was a camper. However, being only thirteen at the time, I knew
I would have to wait. I was soon put to work in the kitchen, on
maintenance, and just simply running errands for the staff. I felt
my presence at camp to be rather useless and began wishing I
were older so that I could better contribute. As I mentioned this
to some of the staff I got the same reply over and over again:
Read 1 Timothy 4:12, and think about the young man named
Timothy. Yes, I looked into it, but didnt take it to heart at the time.
I Timothy 4:12 Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young but set an example for the believers in
speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
Summer of 2008 I was one of the guinea pigs for the first
run of a program called Work Crew, which stemmed off of our
Servant Leadership Training program. Work Crew is a training period where you grow in your relationship with Christ
and learn what it means to serve God in a behind-the-scenes
sort of way at camp. One day at Work Crew, while I was

washing windows, Duane Goertzen, the assistant director
at Roseau, said something along these lines: Kimmee, after
youve finished Work Crew you are going to be so much more
mature. Ive already seen you grow, and someday you are going to lead this program.
I remember smiling to myself that I had been noticed, but
this idea of someday leading Work Crew? Nope. I was going
to be a cabin leader, and that was the end of it. However, I
did enjoy my time on Work Crew and definitely hold a lot
of value for that time. It was there that I learned so much
about myself, and got a solid foundation in working hard at
everything I did including my relationship with Christ. I
was taught the meaning behind selflessness and serving and
obeying Christ without hesitation.
Finally, in the summer of 2009, I got to participate in the
Cabin Leader Prep program, which is the other part of our Servant Leadership Training program. I was finally able to begin
to live out what I had wanted to be since I was young! Over
those three weeks at CLP, I was able to develop into more of
a leader; I met lifelong friends and was impacted by amazing leaders. Later on in the summer, I was asked to be a cabin
leader for a teen camp. I was fifteen at this time, just barely
older than the girls in my cabin. 1 Timothy 4:12 came up, and
during this week I learned that God is faithful and Hell never let us go through life on our own.

Change is in the air...

WORK CREW BOSS

KIMMEE Fell in love with her work

crew teams. HER PAST EXPERIENCES
OF GOD s faithfulness greatly
impacted her boss responsibilities .
Summer of 2010, I cabin-led for most of my summer. I even
went up to Gimli Bible Camp and did two weeks there but
thats another story all on its own! The last two weeks of summer, Roseau didnt have a female Work Crew leader. I was sixteen years old; it had only been two years since I had been in
the program! Again, 1 Timothy 4:12 was brought to mind. This
verse pushed me to lead by example, even when things got
tough and I was forced into tears and into action that I never
thought I was capable of. Those two weeks were life-changing.
My girls taught me so much and I inevitably fell in love
with Work Crew.
This past summer, my job at Roseau was Work Crew Boss! I
always thought I would be a cabin leader, but God had other
things in mind for me! Isnt that great? God always gives us

what we want and need, even when we completely disagree

and think we know better. Gods will always pulls us through,
and it always - not sometimes, not every now and again, but
ALWAYS - is better than our own.
During my time at Roseau River Bible Camp, I struggled
with the idea that God needs me. I didnt think I was allowed
to struggle and that I had to be the perfect example in order to
be of any worth to anyone. I became a slave to my own selfish desires of having to be #1, because I believed that otherwise, God couldnt use me. But, what Ive learned is that Gods
strength is made more evident in our struggles. When we
humble ourselves and admit that we cant do everything on
our own, and begin to depend on God and trust in His plan,
thats when God works through us.
1 Timothy 4:12 - Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young but set an example for the believers in
speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
As I grow older now I am excited to see where God is going
to take me in my life and how He is going to continue to use
me!

Kimmee describes herself as a hard-working, outgoing, determined, stubborn, soon to be 18-year-old girl. She has a passion
for people, playing the drums and learning new things. She loves
a challenge and clings to the promise that God is faithful!

No EXPERIENCE WASTED
By Wayne E i s b re n n e r

As a young man growing up in the 60s and 70s, I often watched the Mission Impossible TV series. You remember
the assignment given to the IMF team would begin with,
Good morning, Mr. Phelps, followed by a description of the
situation, along with the statement, Your mission, Jim, should
you decide to accept it and an explanation of the actual
mission. The parting words on the tape were, As always,
should you or any of your I.M. Force be caught or killed, the
Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.

While not embarking on a life or death mission per se, on

November 1, 2011, Judy and I began our ministry as the new
Manitoba Provincial Director Couple of CSSM Ministries. At
age 59, when many men and women begin thinking about
their retirement plans, the Lord, it seemed, had other plans
in mind for us. While we embark on a mission that at times
can seem overwhelming, unlike the I.M. Force, this is Gods
mission, and therefore is definitely not impossible! It has been
truly amazing to me to see how God has prepared us for this
next step in fulfilling the mission He has called us to.
I was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, and grew up in a
Christian home. I made a first-time commitment to the Lord
at Echo Lake Bible Camp at the age of nine, and lived a pretty
typical nice Christian life growing up. After high school, I
attended Bible College for a year of Christian education training, and it was here that I met the young woman who would
become my wife. Judy and I were married on December 29,
1972, and the Lord blessed us with three sons born in 1977,
1978 and 1979! We have subsequently been blessed with four
granddaughters ranging in ages from 4 to 13.
In November 1972, I began a career in the banking industry, which lasted some thirteen years and involved numerous moves primarily in Alberta. It was also during these
years that I drifted far from my Christian upbringing and
moved into the darkness of alcoholism. At times, it must have
seemed impossible for my life to ever change, but Gods grace
is greater than our sins.
Through a series of circumstances, God began a work in
my life that culminated in a rededication of my life to Him
in the spring of 1981. Shortly thereafter, we were once again
transferred, this time to Brooks, Alberta. Here, God brought

into our lives a pastor couple, Harald and Jan Gruber, who
took seriously Gods call to disciple others. For the first time in
my life, I was discipled and mentored in my Christian walk.
This discipling process brought a new challenge into our lives,
as Jan, spurred on by the urging of the Holy Spirit, challenged
me one Sunday, Wayne, someday you will stand before God
and He will not ask how many loan applications you wrote
and got approved, but rather He will say, What did you do
with the gifts and talents I have given you? I believe He is
calling you to full-time Christian service.
My response was a very emphatic, Youre out of your
mind. To my thinking, that really was an impossible mission. But, Gods ways are not our ways, and over the course
of several years, all my arguments against Gods leading were
brought to nought. In September 1985 we moved to Edmonton, Alberta so that I could begin my studies toward becoming
a pastor. After completing an undergraduate degree at North
American Baptist College, and receiving an MDiv and MA in
Counseling at their seminary in Sioux Falls, South Dakota,
we began our pastoral ministry in Whitecourt, Alberta at the
Whitecourt Baptist Church in July 1990.
Over the past 21 years we have pastored churches in
Whitecourt and Winnipeg, spending the past seven years as
the lead pastor of the Boissevain MB Church.
Camping ministry has been a significant part of my pastoral ministry as I have had opportunity to be the chapel speaker at a number of camps, most recently at Turtle Mountain
Bible Camp. Judy has been the TMBC bookkeeper since 2006,
and I have been involved in facilitating a visioning seminar
for TMBC, as well as being the chairman of the Board Development Team.
In June of this year, I was approached by Bill McCaskell
to consider ministry with CSSM Ministries, and again, as has
so often been the case, my first response was negative. Moving from pastoral ministry to a camp ministry seemed like
another impossibility, but God moves in mysterious ways at

God s M ission. Our Adventure.

EMBARKING ON THE MISSION

times, and, once again, we find ourselves embarking on a new
adventure with Him.
Just the other day, I remarked to Judy that in this position
as the new Manitoba CSSM Ministries Director, it was interesting how my banking career and pastoral ministry were becoming more fully integrated. She replied, It just goes to show
that no experience is wasted from Gods perspective.
Over the past few years, Gods words from Jeremiah 29:11
- For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD,
plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you
hope and a future - have become very special to Judy and I.
Though at times it seems that we are facing impossible missions, over and over again God has proved Himself more than
faithful, and what has seemed impossible has been made reality! We continue to look toward to the future in anticipation
of what the Lord has in store for us and CSSM Ministries, and
are excited about being a part of what He is going to do in and
through our ministry in reaching those who have the least opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus!

Throughout history, there have been men and women

who were willing to sacrifice their lives rather than compromise their faith.
Simon Ivascu, Steven Ivascu and Wesley Pop fled Romania when they were only teenagers. This trio has been singing
since their days in Italy shortly after fleeing Romania. Simon
recalls, We were singing mostly hymns together back when
we were in Italy, but we started to sing Southern Gospel Music in 2000, after we heard the Gaithers and the Cathedrals on
television. It was a sound that we instantly fell in love with.
After singing at local churches and telling our story, it was
suggested to actually give our group a name: The Freedom
Singers. In 2001, Freedom Singers was officially born.
Why Freedom Singers?

completion of high school. Being conscientious Christians,
they could not join the army because freedom of worship was
totally restricted. Refusing to join would result in several years
of imprisonment and persecution.
Determined to escape to freedom, they all faced danger
and hardships fleeing from Romania to Italy, but Simon and
Wesleys nightmare began in earnest when they sought the
help of a human smuggler to get them out of the country. They
crawled into a shipping container, which was then locked and
sealed. There they spent two weeks in total darkness as they
baked in the heat for days before being loaded onto a ship,
headed to an unknown destination. They ran out of food, water, oxygen and hope. As despair filled their container, it appeared that the container would become their likely tomb.
While we wont give away the rest of their story well let
them tell it themselves during the Spring Concert Tour we
will say that we consider ourselves blessed beyond measure
to be joined this year by men of such unyielding faith and exceptional talent.
Now having made their home in Kelowna, B.C., Simon
shares, Weve been blessed beyond our imagination in so
many ways from the opportunity of sharing our music and
testimony in churches big and small, to performing at the largest annual Canadian Gospel Convention in Red Deer, doing

One of the favourite aspects of my role with CSSM Ministries is hearing how lives, families and destinies have been
changed by God through this ministry. Heres one of my alltime favourites a classic story of how one decision, even
made by a young child, can impact thousands of people.
Rose Guenthers family moved from the Bible Belt of
southern Manitoba to the Stuartburn area in 1935. (Rose recounts that her parents moved 18 times in their nearly 70
years of marriage.) There was no church in their area, but
Roses parents faithfully taught her Gods Word. In 1936, Mr.
Biersworth from Menisino came by bicycle to visit schools
in her area. He got children interested in coming to Gimli
Bible Camp. They didnt need money they could earn their
way! All they had to do was just memorize 500 Bible verses
from the Gospel of John. Boy, did I memorize while herding
cows, Rose smiles. She then had to recite them to her Dad or
older sisters. Apparently they wouldnt let her off easy!
Finally, in the summer of 1937, the first day of camp arrived. Mr. Bjornson from the Sundown area came with his
cattle truck, loaded up all the eager kids and headed out to
camp. Some kind ladies at Winnipeg Bible Institute treated
them to lunch, and off they went again. It was late afternoon when they reached Gimli Bible Camp.

Acts 16:31 became very precious and real to Rose that

week. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be
saved. The last evening of camp, Rose confessed her sin and
accepted Jesus as her Saviour at a fireside as the campers
sang, Let the Lower Lights be Burning.
In the years that followed that pivotal decision, Rose
married John Thiessen. Together, they had eight children
six daughters and two sons. Joshua 24:15 was the motto
in their home, as for me and my house, we will serve the
LORD.
While John has been promoted to glory, and Rose has
now moved from the farm to a seniors apartment in Winnipeg, she continues to pray daily for her family nearly 75
in total now, many of whom are currently, or have been, in
full-time Christian service. Many have served with CSSM
Ministries as directors, board members, cabin leaders and...
(you get the idea).
Rose loves to share what God is doing in and through her
family:
Darlene and her husband Dave Holland are in full-time
ministry at Meadowood Manor in Winnipeg, serving Rose
and the other 170-some seniors on a daily basis. They were
instrumental in the early years of Deloraine Bible Chapel
and Turtle Mountain Bible Camp, serving in south-western
Manitoba for some thirteen years. (Were excited to report
that, just recently, Dave joined the Provincial Council, the
advisory board that oversees CSSM Ministries Manitoba.)
Darlenes twin, Grace, and Graces husband, Ralph
Gliege, serve in a pastor-to-pastor role with the Mennonite
Brethren Conference in Saskatchewan.
Next in line is Carol, who, along with her husband Ted,
enjoys teaching at their small church in Hodgson, Manitoba.
Fourth is the Thiessens first son Art. He and his wife
Jackie direct one of CSSM Ministries largest camps Dallas
Valley Ranch Camp (www.dallasvalley.com), just northwest of Regina. Every summer, nearly 2000 children hear
of Christ at Dallas Valley - some for the very first time. The
follow-up program at Dallas Valley is sensational, and features weekly interactions with campers in the new indoor
riding arena and climbing wall.
Next is Marilyn. She and her husband Mel are involved
in Stuartburn Gospel Chapel, a church that the Thiessens
were involved in for years, in fact since its founding.

God s M ission. Our Adventure.

THE POWER OF ONE

Number six in the Thiessen clan was Lois. Lois and her
husband, David Klassen, were very involved in their home
church, directing Christmas programs, helping as greeters,
and serving wherever needed. Rose weeps as she shares
how Lois passed away in September 2007 in a traffic mishap,
along with her 14-year-old son near Andrews, Texas.
The youngest daughter is Deborah, who, together with
her husband Rick Woodall, loves serving wherever the Lord
opens the door.
The youngest member of the family is Kelvin married to
Lorie. Kelvin serves as Admissions Director at Millar College
of the Bible (www.millarcollege.ca) in Pambrun, Sask. Every
year some 160 young adults are trained in Gods Word at Millar. (Millars ads appeared in the previous two publications
of the Manitoba Missionary.)
So, 75 years after that pivotal decision at Gimli Bible
Camp, the Lord continues to bear fruit through the Thiessen
family. Gimli Bible Camp did wonders for our family, Rose
admits. And, we might add, it continues to do wonders for
many other families, both as the camp continues to reach
children and teens in inner-city Winnipeg, and as those impacted by its ministry continue to reach the lost around the
globe.

Theres this amazing restaurant in Selkirk: Roxys, that Ill

use literally any excuse to go to because its just that wonderful. Its all home-cooked stuff, but nothing like youll see
anywhere else seafood crepes, cowboy flatbread pizza,
marble poutine. One of those places where eating is an
adventure, not just about lifting a fork to your mouth.
I was ready for the adventure when Mathew Dueck and
I grabbed our corner table. I already knew what I wanted
the Mango Berry Smoothie, a Roxys classic. Mat ordered
the same, and we caught up on life while we waited for our
smoothie goodness.
Mat and I had met at one of the last Adventure Day
Camps of the summer. Our Day Camp team had partnered
with Youth for Christ in Selkirk that week, and Mat had
joined us as a YFC junior volunteer. Coming from a sevenweek cabin-leading stint at Gimli Bible Camp, his connection
with the kids and his hunger for God struck a chord in me. I
had invited him back onto the team for the next and final
week of Day Camp, and was ecstatic when he said yes!
After I got back to the provincial support office after a
summer on the road with the Adventure Day Camp team, I
reflected on the God-stories I had watched play out right in
front of me that July and August, including Mathews. Based
on the two weeks I had spent at Day Camp with him, hearing about his family, his God-journey, and watching him in
action, I asked if he would be willing to possibly be part of an article
for the upcoming issue of the Manitoba Missionary. He readily agreed,
and I had an excuse to go to Roxys!
When our drinks arrived, I
pulled out my laptop, and we
laughed together about how official
this whole interview thing looked.
Okay, dont sugarcoat anything, I

Page 16

told him. Theres nothing you can say thats not important.
I asked Mat to come up with five words that would describe himself. Compassionate, he began, funny, procrastinator, and strong-willed but not stubborn, he defined.
Ill put that in there, I laughed, adding not stubborn
to my notes. He laughed too, and hummed and hawed for a
while about the last word.
And an over-thinker. See how long it took me to think
up a fifth word?
We kept laughing together as he talked a bit about himself his favorite food (Hawaiian Pizza), what kind of car he
wanted (a red Ferrari), the book he was reading (Wide Awake
by Irwin McManus) those kinds of things. I wanted people
to know he was a real person when they read his story. Mats
grade twelve year was in full swing; he was looking for a job,
and was still junior volunteering at YFC, having taken on a
bit of an internship there alongside the director.
Okay, I said, starting a new paragraph. Tell me about
yourself, about your life.
Mat was good with pacing himself so I could keep up
with my notes, and he talked simply about facts. I was adopted when I was eight months old, and grew up in La Broquerie. We were churchgoers and stuff. Theres four kids in
my family all adopted two older and one younger than
me.
I knew what was coming, but I didnt know how Mat
would go about communicating it. He barely paused. When
I was nine, my dad passed away from cancer. Straightforwardly, he said simply, It was devastating. He unpacked it
a bit I thought God was mean, that He let people suffer. I
kept denying there was a God. I went to Valley View Bible
Camp when I was 11, 12, and 13. We would be at campfire,

He loved me.
Mat had an ability to communicate things simply and
matter-of-factly, and you knew he had a lot of memories behind his words. I made a decision for Christ at camp, went
home, tried to follow Him, and gave up. It didnt really stick.
When I was 14, my family moved to Selkirk, and I went
into a depression. I was going to commit suicide, but I had
started attending a Christian school in Winnipeg, and God
saved my life both through school and through the book,
The Shack. I became closest to God at the darkest point of
my life. His presence was just all around. I got involved with
Youth for Christ through an Alpha course I wanted to explore my faith deeper and get involved with helping out
with events. It helped me tremendously, just with situations
with my family and being a refuge for me to go to and just
connecting with people, and helping others. Its been the adventure of a lifetime ever since [God saved my life]. Im the
only Christian in my family, and I got baptized this past summer.
You didnt have to talk to Mat long before recognizing a
conviction resulting from having met God. Do you think
you were able to connect with the kids at camp differently
because of your background? I asked, leaning forward and
playing with my straw.
My background helped me relate a lot to the kids stories
at camp this summer: family difficulties, socio-economic conditions, questioning suffering, wanting to know God is there.
Those kids wanted to rise out of that they wanted to overcome.
How did you end up at camp this summer? I asked,
God s Mission. O ur Adv enture.

thinking I knew the answer. I didnt.

My friend posted on Facebook that they needed cabin
leaders for Gimli Bible Camp. I felt God drawing me toward
that, so I messaged her about it. It was a huge leap of faith to
go to Gimli; I felt like I was actually stepping out of the boat
and walking on the water. I had no idea what I was doing,
knew nothing about kids, I didnt know anyone there super
well.
What was your first thought when you got there? I wondered, stealing a couple sips of smoothie before going back to
the keyboard.
This is awkward, Mathew responded. We both laughed
again. I got there the last night of staff training, Mathew
shared, I was just really nervous. I was asking Am I the
only new one? What are these kids going to be like? Is this
right for me, God? Are You sure?
What was your first week like? I asked, curious, knowing
what it was like to be the late arrival.
It was awesome, Mathew replied immediately. I expected chaos, but it was awesome. That first week, I was under a cabin leader who was older and had more experience; I
was under their wing just to learn about stuff.
Mathew continued cabin-leading over the summer,
and he shared how impacting camp life was. Mathew-presummer was selfish, and he didnt like kids. Mathew-aftersummer loved, loved, loved I could go on forever loved
kids, and saw Jesus in every single one of them. I learned to
be humble and selfless. I was gaining confidence every week
as a cabin leader, starting to lead, to take initiative. I never
thought Id be good working with kids, but at the end of the
summer I had a HEART for these kids. Love that was my
thing this summer. I was selfish at the beginning, and at the

Manitoba Missionary

Page 17

end, I was just, I really dont care. I just want these kids to
know Jesus, and I wanted to have fun with them at the same
time.
As Mathew recalled different kids that stuck out to him
through the summer, he concluded, Id listen to their stories
and want to cry. Youre just on your knees before God, broken
for that specific child. I think every single one of those kids I
had, God put them in my cabin every single one of them. Id
be like, Whyd I get this kid, God, seriously? This kid is going
to act up all week! And it was true, they would! Yet, at the
same time, God broke through to them. One kid was writing
Satan on his arm, drawing symbols on himself, acting up in
chapel by the end of the week he saw Gods love for him.
My favorite week was with Cabin Seven; the best week
ever. God led every single one in my cabin to Him; They all
responded to Him It may have been in repentance, taking a
stand for something, deciding they were going to make good
decisions. I gave them all Bibles, and they were so happy to
get them.
And the people you worked with
Very sincere. They were there for the right reasons. They
were willing to work as a team, to work together. They cared
about the kids, about the staff too. I felt really blessed working with CSSM. I wondered how Id fit in, but I did. I made
so many friends. People were just real, genuine, and like a
family; a big spiritual family. I just saw the kingdom of God,
working together.
We ordered fries to split between us and I went back to
my keyboard. Tell me about Day Camp, I said, putting my
empty smoothie glass down.
When I came back from Gimli, I just wanted to go home
and sleep. I was so overtired, I just really missed Gimli, but yet
I felt God was telling me to do Day Camp in Selkirk. I met the
team the day before Day Camp started when they came out to
look at the building I was thinking, This is cool, not really
knowing if Id have a role or what Id be doing. It wasnt like

I thought itd be. I didnt think itd be as much about getting

the kids to know God I just thought it would be about fun.
My favorite part of Day Camp was seeing the kids actually
praying, actually seeking God. It was so awesome to see kids
actually connecting with God, listening to Him. How many
day camps facilitate that? I didnt expect it.
Some of the kids that had attended Selkirks Adventure
Day Camp live in the same housing complex as Mathew, and
he has been building relationships with them for awhile.
There was a kid sitting by me at Day Camp remember
that? who just kept hitting me, but I was like, Whatever,
Im going to keep sitting here. Hell see me now and be like,
Hi Mathew! They love me. Every time they see me Hi
Mathew! I see them all the time out there These kids have
no structure. To want to play with them, and know their
name, to sit and talk with them they really benefit from
that.
Why did you come back for a second week of Day Camp?
I asked him, smothering our fries with ketchup.
I always say to God, Here I am, send me. Mat replied.
Im not someone to sit there and be like, Should I really?
It was just God that I go.
Mats simple words were framed with wisdom that
seemed beyond a seventeen-year-old twelfth grader. I find
that theres a big correlation between camp kids and Christians, he told me. You know how kids always want to know,
Whos your favorite? We want to know were Gods favorite
too.
You could tell where Mathews understanding came from
as he shared about his own relationship with God. The Holy
Spirit chased after me, wanted to know me, wanted me to
know Him as a person, not a thing. You can relate in relationship; you KNOW God. The Holy Spirit has always been
drawing me to Himself. Hes a pursuer. He makes brokenness
beautiful.
Mat had been ruined for the ordinary; you could see it.
What burned in his heart came out naturally. I believe the

God s M ission. Our Adventure.

Holy Spirit has totally placed Himself on me to compel me to
actually do something not just talk. I hate apathy. I have
a heart for orphans, the fatherless; thats why Im pursuing
social work. I do not believe in just talking about change, I
believe in being the change you want to see in the world. My
part is obedience. Here I am God, send me.
When I dropped Mat off at home later that evening, he
came back out to the car to lend me a book Compelled by
Love, by one of his favorite authors, Heidi Baker, missionary
to the poor of Mozambique. I can hear the same heart that
God is molding in Mathew in her.
What is our motivation for ministry? she writes. The
Lord is looking for servant-lovers people who are passionate and filled with love for Him, people who desire and are
longing for the Bridegrooms return, people who can already
taste the feast and know its about to begin. These people can
no longer stand to stay in their comfort zones. They will literally run out and call in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and
the lame. And if we will go out and call them showing them
the love of God they will come.
What do kids need when they come to camp? I had
asked Mathew earlier that evening.
He didnt miss a beat. They need love. Simple as that.
Its not over-complicated, and its not meant to be. Thats it.
People try to over-complicate things What do kids need?

God s Mission. O ur Adv enture.

Its love.
Im a prisoner of love. Heidi Baker had written. I have
given my life for love.
Ive been learning to ask myself Why not? and What if?
lately. Theyre powerful questions, and in this context, they
take the shape of Why doesnt the world identify Christians
by their love? Why hasnt the world come running into our
arms to meet Jesus? What would it take for that to happen?
What if we actually did give our lives for love What would
that mean for me, what would that look like, and what would
be the result? And finally Why wouldnt I dare to go on
the journey to find out?
It sounds like Mat has let himself sit in those kinds of
questions for awhile, whether or not it was comfortable or the
answers came easily or the solutions meant he was required
to change. Hes given God the access needed to begin shaping him into one of the servant-lovers Heidi wrote about; you
can hear the burning heart inside of him.
I encourage us to join him in asking the tough questions.
What have we got to lose?

Elanna Truijen has fallen in love with Heidi Baker, and has
set her course to live out that same heart, Elanna style. She
continues asking tough questions from her beautiful, God-given,
new home in St Vital,Winnipeg.

FAITH DOESNt STOP

Faith. Its a topic that Christians seem fairly familiar with

at least as long as comfort and predictability arent sacrificed for the cause. Nothing is easier than trusting God to
do something you desire with your whole heart. But what
happens when your faith in God takes you places you
dont anticipate? What if He brings you to circumstances
you could have never imagined enduring? What happens
when you say to God, Everything I have is yours, and
He takes your word for it?
Henry and Loretta Enns have been on a constant journey of faith and not the comfy, cozy kind for quite some
time now. Im sure if they were told a few years ago that they
would end up as Executive Directors of Valley View Bible
Camp, they would have found it difficult to believe. Thats

Page 20

because, as Henry puts it, Coming here was a process that

had to happen over time. Its not like all of a sudden, God
said, You must go to camp. He worked on us gradually.
God used many different tools to teach Henry and Loretta
about what true faith in Him looks like. As they pressed further into the Word of God, both on their own and in the fellowship of other Christians, their desire to use the resources
they had for ministry and discipleship became stronger. Although they had already been doing this through the business that Henry co-owned, it became clear that God was
calling them to something a bit more out of the ordinary
something that, from a worldly standard, seemed rather
risky.
With direct confirmation from believers around them

and from Gods own Word, Henry and Loretta decided to

leave their financially-secure business and step out into the
next venture God had for them, whatever it would be. All
they knew is that God would most certainly provide direction, and in less than a day after parting company with their
business, He began to do just that.
While meeting with a friend over lunch, a seed was planted in their minds a mere glimpse of an idea of how God
could use them. At that time they were made aware that the
Provincial Directorship position at CSSM Ministries Manitoba was about to open up. Although camp ministry was something that the couple both saw
the value of, they realized that it
would be difficult to involve their
young family in such a position.
Instead of jumping at the first opportunity, they decided to wait
and see what God had for them.
Henry and Loretta didnt feel
right about taking a passive role
in waiting for God to show them
what He wanted for them. They
started making plans to explore as
many ministries as possible, just
to see if God would speak to them
while they travelled. These plans
included spending two weeks
working at Midway Bible Camp,
going on a South American adGod s Mission. O ur Adv enture .

venture, travelling through the southern States while looking into different ministries, and even checking out Mennonite Disaster Services. In all of this, they were wary of missing
Gods still, small voice.
Three months after they had first heard about the CSSM
Provincial position, they caught wind of a different position
opening up within the mission: the directorship at Valley
View Bible Camp. After hanging up from the phone call that
heralded this opportunity, Loretta admitted that their hearts
had skipped a beat upon hearing the news. It was something that immediately filled us with hope, and yet, at the

said, No, we cant take this on right now not with Dexter so
sick. God knew exactly what Henry and Loretta needed to
know and when.
We tend to believe that the epitome of faith is the moment when we make some big sacrifice to God. Having given
the best of what we have, we eagerly await the beginning of
our new life of Spirit-led adventure and excitement. Its almost as if the hard part is over and all thats left to do is to be
swept along in the current of Gods will.
But faith doesnt stop there it cant stop there. Oftentimes
what follows so great a victory is the slightly sobering, but altogether good promise that God will lead us but in His own
time. And, being a good God, where He leads us will always
be good, too.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your
ways my ways, declares the LORD. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and
my thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9, NIV).

Development
The Provincial Support Ministry
of CSSM Ministries Manitoba

Even seasoned missionaries have areas in their

lives that need to be built up or developed more. The
Provincial Office has taken a keen interest to provide resources that aid in not only individual missionary development but also the development
of ministry boards and ministry in general. The
neat thing is that they dont just point out weaknesses or needed improvements but they help you
find resources to grow and develop. They stay connected with you through emails and phone calls
that encourage you to keep going. One of the grea

WHEN GOD WRITES

NEW
STORIES

BREAKING THROUGH BARRIERS

B y R a c h e l Va n B e n t h e m

There were stories I had heard about a specific

northern community that were so sad and lonely and
violent and wounded, that to be honest, I was really
scared to go there with the Adventure Day Camp team.
But Jesus gave me the encouragement and strength to
make it through all the doubts of the time leading up to
that week, and taught me some powerful lessons while
I was there.

RACHEL FOUND THAT BROKENESS,

sADNESS AND LONELINESS ALL
RESPONDED TO THE LOVE OF JESUS.

This northern community was not like any of the small

towns that I had been to before. At the park, the structures
were covered in graffiti and there were no slides because
they had been burned to the ground; all that remained
would be a lump of deformed plastic where a charming
slide had once stood.

WHEN GOD WRITES NEW STORIES

I could tell that these children had been emotionally hurt
just by the way they interacted with one another. That week,
there was one girl, about the age of ten, whom Ill call Jess for
the duration of this story. Jess was a tough kid. She would often
pick on the other children, call them names, take things from
them or punch them. I dont know how, but God allowed me
to look past all these things and see a really amazing, neat girl.
Once, when I was making lunch, she came into the kitchen. Hey bud, she uttered.
A little shocked, I replied, Hey bud. Whats up?
Can I help you make lunch? Jess asked.
Sure, I replied.
She grabbed a spoon and began to stir. This was just one
of the times that we were able to interact and have a magnificent time. That week we made bracelets together and played
games. When we went on walks, she would walk beside me,
and she was also in my small group so we would make crafts
together along with some of the other children.
One day I called Jess over after she had called another child
a name. I asked, Jess, would you want someone else to call
you a name like that?
She looked down at the ground and said, They do. They
call me names all the time. Then, after a short pause, she
looked right at me and said, No one loves me.
Thoughts ran quickly through my head. Thoughts like,

Of course others make fun of her; where else would she have
learned it, and, That is so horrible, and then, Thank-you God
for what I have people who encourage me, a family who
loves me, and a God, who, no matter what happens or what
I have done, is looking out for me. All these thoughts ran
through my head in a matter of seconds.
I put my hands on Jess shoulders. Jess, I said, I love you.
This little girl who had been trying to act so tough and
strong, looked at me and began to cry. She reached out and I
gave her a hug for a few minutes, then she went back to play.
Jess came back for a few more hugs that day.
God is writing new stories for that community stories of
the amazing God who can break through the barriers created
around hearts by us simply saying I love you.

A thousand years ago God had already mapped out
the events of Beaver Lake Bible Camp... This alone is truly
amazing! When camp was in the planning for summer 2011,
our leadership team could not foresee what God could
and would do. We came into the summer praying for
funding and for others to catch the vision that God had
for the camp.
In the early parts of summer we knew that
a couple of the doors had closed for funding
to come into the camp. We continued to pray
to the Lord for direction and the Lord assured
us that His camp would be running for the
whole summer. As we came up to the day before camp, we attended church, knowing God

enough to bring 16 campers
to camp that week and that
is how many God brought!
During the next week we witnessed something I had never seen before; every day that I
went to the mailbox there were more donations. Donations
come in many forms at times, but every single one of the donations addressed to us were specifically for camper sponsorships. After the first week of camp, we had received enough
donations to run two more weeks of camp; by the time the
second week came, we had received close to enough to finish
out the summer!
We had not known how we were going to be able to host
campers that summer, but God had it figured out. We prayed

visit as guests so many times throughout the summer and
pitch in wherever needed! It truly takes the body and that is
why camp was such a success! Many families served these
children in the way that God had called them to Thank-You
Lord! We were so blessed to have our prayers answered! We
are not meant to take any of the glory for ourselves. Knowing that God was the One who orchestrated the camp made
it perfect!
As leaders in a continuously moving ministry, we are
constantly being shaped and molded. One thing that Mitch
and I learned this summer was how we are supposed to stand
firm when storms may come. The Lord gave Mitch a heart for
walking in assertiveness while working for the Kingdom;
while he is at work for the King he must be humble, yet assertive, so that the others that are being led and discipled know
that we do not serve a wavering God.
We are seeing the fruit of what God has been doing in
these childrens lives, and also seeing the camp taking a great
direction in discipleship. We were witnesses this summer to
cabin leaders coming alongside youth campers and really
coming to understand who they were, sitting and laughing
and hurting with the every day ups and down of the youth.
Throughout this summer we saw the need for not just a fiveday camp, but a fifteen-day program for those youth who we
have seen come back year after year, the youth that want to
serve but have not been given the opportunity to grow deep
in their faith or to be discipled. Please pray with us as we look
forward to the camps future and where God would see Beaver Lake Bible Camp going!

I was raised on a farm with good values and big goals. I became
a Christian at TMBC and began volunteering there when I was
15. I love to be around horses and I play many different sports.
I married the man of my dreams in 2011. I enjoy writing and telling stories. My family is very important to me, we are very close.
God has been showing me many things these past few years

PREPARING FOR
THE
FUTURE

THE BENEFITS OF
LONG TERM GIVING
By H arold Pe n n e r

Twenty years ago, I began making annual treks to

Turtle Mountain Bible Camp to attend family camp together with my wife, daughters and extended family. The
experience became an annual family highlight, and, while
the strollers and high chairs of the kids are a now distant memory, we still enjoy the journey to Turtle Mountain
each year to renew old friendships, meet new friends,
enjoy the water sports, and learn from the speaker.
As a family, we have appreciated CSSMs commitment to
making it possible and affordable for children and families to
attend camps each summer where they can hear about Jesus
and be encouraged in their faith. It takes a lot of people to
operate a camp volunteers and missionaries and it takes
money too.
I am excited by CSSM Ministries vision for the future.
Their core values of relevance and member care have created an incentive to establish a new venture between CSSM
Ministries and the Mennonite Foundation of Canada. The
establishment of the CSSM Development Fund is of particular interest to me as it provides an opportunity for ongoing
ministry.
The Mennonite Foundation of Canada (MFC) makes
charitable giving easy, whether it is in-kind gifts of securities, bequest gifts, or more straightforward donations. MFC
is uniquely set up to receive gifts of securities, life insurance
and more, which many charities are unable to accept; MFC is
able to process the gift, then pass along the proceeds as your
donation. One aspect of giving that MFC facilitates is donations of qualifying publicly traded securities, which can be
a very tax-efficient way to make a gift to charity. MFC has
significant experience handling this type of gift and flowing
the proceeds to recipient charities. MFC also provides advice
and assistance in the giving of real estate, offers you the option of making your gift anonymously, and manages longterm gifts to ministries like CSSM Ministries by paying out
the earnings on your gift annually.
Recent statistics suggest that almost fifty percent of Canadians do not have current valid wills in place, yet wills can

make it possible to give a larger gift to charity. MFC can make

will preparation easier by providing seminars explaining
the estate planning process and meeting with individuals to
discuss their specific estate situation. MFC makes it easy for
you to distribute your charitable bequest to charities of your
choice, such as CSSM Ministries.
I have wished for a number of years that the Mennonite
Foundation of Canadas ministry regarding planned giving
could benefit CSSM and its ministry. That wish is now a present reality. Contact your local CSSM Ministries office for more
information regarding the CSSM Development Fund and
how you can contribute. If an in-kind gift or an estate gift is
an option you would like to pursue, CSSM will connect you
to the Mennonite Foundation of Canada.

COMING
TOGETHER
THE HEART OF

By Bill McC a s ke l l
I admit it. I cant really build things.
Its not that I dont try to build or fix things, its just
that if there is any possible way for a door to be installed so it swings in instead of out, for the cold
water tap to be the hot water tap, or for the on switch
to be the off switch, I will find a way to do it.
There is, however, one notable exception to this
construction-challenged personal history the deck I
built a couple of summers ago for our home in MacGregor. This was not just your run-of-the-mill deck; it
ended up being large enough to be home to some patio
furniture, and included a built-in planter box and a set
of stairs spiralling down from the house. I was thrilled
when I finished it, and, I have to admit, it was pretty
satisfying to look at every time I gazed out to the backyard.
However, I quickly discovered that the excitement
and joy I had in the deck building itself was only a
shadow of things to come, as the deck transformed into
much more than something I had simply managed to
put together. It became a place where people came together.
Whether it was Bev and I enjoying a conversa-

tion over a cup of coffee on a quiet Saturday morning as we watched Gods creation, or visiting with our
neighbours while we sat around swatting mosquitoes
and sipping iced tea, or bringing our church family together over watermelon the deck provided the opportunity for people to come together to be encouraged,
challenged and loved; thats the really awesome thing
about building things.
Many of our camps in Manitoba are in the middle
of their own construction projects from Dauphins
new kitchen and dining room facility (pictured on the
front cover) to Gimlis new chapel and multipurpose
addition to Turtle Mountains new kitchen and dining
room to Roseau Rivers new accommodations chalet.
They are each putting in countless volunteer hours in
planning, fundraising and constructing, not so they
can have a new building, but so people can come
together. Whenever you bring people, who love Jesus
with all their hearts, together with those who do not
know Jesus yet, awesome things happen.
There is a dark side, however, to construction projects. It often remains unspoken; it is the same temptation that building things creates for any of us. There
is that subtle pull to shift our focus away from what
is unseen to that which is seen; to center primarily on
those tangible things, like new buildings that we can
see and put our hands on; to consume ourselves with
those projects where progress is visible, or the jobs in
which we can feel as though we are doing something.
The temptation is then to forget that God is always doGod s Mission . Our Adventure .

ing something (and you dont have to take my word for

it, see what Jesus says in John 5:17). We begin to focus
on just the building, and forget the reason for the building.
I have a friend who builds things for a living; and
he is pretty good at it. My deck took me the equivalent
of three solid weeks; Sheldon could have done it in two
days. Last spring, Sheldon traveled with two other fellows to Beaver Lake Bible Camp, located just outside of
Flin Flon, MB, to work on repairing the camps kitchen
floor. Within one day, he and his team had removed all
the cupboards and appliances, ripped out the old rotting floor, installed all new floor joists, plywood and
linoleum and moved everything back. All that done
in one day!
The most amazing thing of the trip wasnt how much
work Sheldon and his crew accomplished. If you ask
Sheldon, what he remembers most is the honest, heartto-heart conversation he had with one of the fellows
who went up with him one of those God-moments
where a young mans spiritual life was awakened.
I believe God wants us to build new buildings and
have better facilities like solid, new kitchen floors
but not so that we can feel as though we have done
something. Rather, we build so we can see and be a part
of what God wants to do, both in our lives and in the
lives of those who will come together.

This coming September marks the beginning of Encounter, a brand new discipleship school that CSSM Ministries
is launching. Its an eleven-month mobile school that travels
from coast to coast, staying at CSSM Ministries camps
along the way. The first seven months, students are trained,
mentored and discipled in their walk with God, while staying a month at a camp in each province. For the final four
months, students join the leadership staff at CSSM camps
across Canada to put into practice the things that they
have just learned.
The vision is threefold, Barry Buhler, leader of Encounter, notes. Change, grow and lead; change by the power of the
Holy Spirit, grow in the faith and knowledge of God Who
He is, and who He created us to be and then lead wherever
God calls, being obedient and leading with a servants heart.
Encounter was birthed out of a passion to give young people across Canada an opportunity to meet and serve God right
in their own backyard, right in the nation they call home.
We see so many passionate, creative, hungry-after-God
young leaders at our camps, Bill McCaskell, CSSM Ministries
National Director shares. We wanted to provide a community where they could be immersed in Gods heart and His
truth, as well as experience what camp ministry could look
like long-term.
Prospective student Tabitha Morrran has worked at several different CSSM Manitoba camps during the past few years.
Encounter immediately sounded like an excellent program
to me, Tabitha commented. I liked the idea of travelling
from camp to camp across Canada, all the while learning
about God. I am expecting to grow in my relationship with
God and be stretched in my faith, while God teaches me about
being a Christian leader, about Himself, and about myself.
While Encounter will have the adventurous aspect of
traveling the country, staying at different camps, and experiencing new ministries, there will be many stretching times
as well. Discipleship requires change and growth, and it is

God s M ission. Our Adventure.

TRANS-CANADA DISCIPLESHIP
only when we allow God to do His work in us that we will become the kind of leaders God intends us to be. Barry reflects.
Encounter will be grueling and stretching at times, but the
fruit that we will see in students is something that will be
worth it.
The Encounter ministry will create ripple effects, both inside and outside of CSSM Ministries. From a summer-ministry
point of view, the strong leadership teams Encounter will
have the opportunity to mold will create a culture of strong
staffing teams as our 43 camps reach out to minister to over
20,000 children. However, the impact of Encounter is aimed
to be far longer lasting then simply one summer of camp ministry. The goal is to send these students to the nations, wherever God leads them. Our desire is to equip them to make a
lasting difference in their spheres of influence, whether that
be business, camp ministry, trades, education, pastoral ministry, missions you name it!
Were trusting that the relationships built through Encounter student to student, student to camp leaders, student
to the Lord will assist these young people in catching the
heart of God for a generation, a nation. Bill reflects, I cant
think of a more fitting name for the school We want nothing

BOOOOOOOOOOOO! someone screamed, jumping out at

Micah screamed back, tripping
over a tree branch and hitting the

Gotcha! Brett laughed. Micah
was annoyed at himself for being
such a scaredy-cat, but he couldnt

Found ya! he grinned back up
at Brett.
I thought I heard someone following
me. Brett pulled Micah to his feet. What
are you doing up so early? Normal people dont wake up at five in the morning.
Exactly! Micah replied, dusting himself off. What are you doing up?
Brett laughed. Playing detective?
Guess youll just have to follow me. He
turned towards the dock, and Micah eagerly followed. At the river, Brett plunked
himself down on the dock. Micah took a
seat beside him. You know how normal
people dont wake up at five a.m.? Brett
asked, opening his backpack. Micah nodded. Well, Micah, I dont want to be normal.
