In September 2000, 189 member states of the United Nations adopted the
Millennium Declaration.
The Millennium Declaration committed the United Nations to peace and
security, conflict prevention, respect for human rights and good governance.
The Millennium Declaration also further committed the UN to achieve
quantifiable goals and targets until 2015 (25 years) that will at least ensure
that development initiatives are effectively eradicating poverty and
promoting sustainable human development.

Eliminate gender disparity in primary and
secondary education, preferably by 2005, and

the under-five mortality rate
Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and
2015, the maternal mortality rate
Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the
spread of HIV/AIDS

incidence of malaria and other major diseases
Integrate the principles of sustainable
