Introduction to Crime Mapping


Course Instructor: Carma S. Rollerson holds a Masters
Degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelors Degree in
Psychology, both from the University of South Carolina.
She is currently a Crime Analyst Supervisor with 5
analysts and covers all investigative analysis. She has
been with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in Florida since
2000. Carma retired after 25 years with the South
Carolina Department of Corrections. Over this time
period she was Correctional Officer, Classification
Caseworker, Classification Supervisor, Training
Lieutenant, Program Coordinator covering 13 counties and; Deputy Warden. She was one
of the first three female officers hired for a male prison in South Carolina. She has been an
Adjunct Professor with Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Carolina, Shaw
University in North Carolina and Florida State College at Jacksonville (formerly FCCJ). She
has been a presenter at such annual conferences as International Association of Crime
Analysts and National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center.

“Crime Mapping” is a five-day, hands-on computer-based course that covers the


fundamentals of mapping crime for tactical, strategic, administrative, and operations
analysis. After a review of the terminology and concepts of crime mapping, the class
plunges directly into hands-on exercises using ArcGIS. Students learn how to explore base
maps, import or link to police data, geocode addresses, perform spatial and attribute
queries, create thematic maps, interpret crime maps, and create effective mapping
products.

The class is intended for the beginner or intermediate user.
