AtthattimetheCentralBoardofSecondaryEducationdecidednot
toofferSanskritasanelectivebecause
1.IftheyofferedSanskrit,theywouldhavetoofferArabic
andPersiansincetheywerealsoclassicallanguages.If
SanskritalonewasofferedignoringArabicandPersian,then
itwouldnotbeseculareducation,sowentthereasoning.
2.IftheyofferedSanskrit,theywouldalsohavetooffer
otherlanguageslikeFrenchandGermanandevenLepcha.

TheSupremeCourtinalandmarkverdictrejectedtheaccusation
thatteachingSanskritwasagainstsecularism.Tomakethat
judgment,theCourtfirstdefinedsecularismasneitherproGodor
antiGod,buttheabilitytotreatdevout,agnosticandatheistalike
andtobeneutralinreligiousmatters.Tobeasecularpersonyou
don'thavetorejectyourreligiousbeliefsyoucoulddeeply
religiousaswellassecular.Toillustratethecase,theCourtcited
twoIndiansMahatmaGandhiandSwamiVivekanandato
"dispeltheimpressionthatifapersonisdevoutHinduordevout

VallabhacharyaandclassicsofKalidasatoBanabhattawere

Thereweretwootherreasons(a)SanskritisintheEighthSchedule,
whileFrench,German,Arabic,PersianandLepchaarenotand(b)
Article351oftheIndianConstitution.

implythatSanskrit=Communal,thusgivingalanguagesucha
narrowdefinitionthatitwoulddisconnectanancientnationfromits
