Similar but slightly different

The first column, called the Endless Column, is a Romanian sculpture

created by Constantin Brancusi. The monument represents a homage to the young
soldiers who died fighting against Germany in World War I and it was
inaugurated in Targu Jiu, in 1938.The second one is a metallic structure placed on
a street in Sidney, Australia. As far is it is known, it doesnt have an international
notoriety like Brancusis column. In spite of evident differences the two columns
have also similarities in what concerns the shape, the material and the suggestion
of infinity.
First of all, the form of both columns is almost identical: the Endless Column
consists of 17 rhombus-shaped modules and the other one is shaped into 8 similar
modules.Though both are nowadays metallic structures, which suggests that they are
representative for modern art, the Romanian work was initially carved in wood by
the famous sculptor Constantin Brancusi.1
Simultaneously, both columns are considered to be important exhibits
since they are placed in public areas. In 1992, the entire sculptural Esemble of
Brancusi in Targu Jiu 2 was declared a monument of public utility and national
interest by the Romanian government. The column from Australia is situated on a
street in the most famous harbour, Sidney.
1

During later years after it was carved in wood, the Endless Column was made out of cast iron
The Esemble in Tg. Jiu consists of other three monuments designed by the same artist:THE
GATE OF KISS, THE TABLE OF SILENCE and THE CHAIRS ALLEY
2

In evident contrast, the Romanian Column is higher than the Australian

one.The Endless Column is 29.9 metres high and it is a spiral which consists of 16
metallic modules and a half module on the top. This fact conveys more powerfully
the idea suggested by its creator: the idea of infinity and touch of the sky.
While the column from Sidney looks like an engineering structure, the
Endless Column highlights the artists thoughts: strong emotions are transmitted
through simple forms for the public. Moreover, the sculptors emotional and
physical effort is expressed by the act of carving itself.
Lastly, the range of notoriety of the two columns is different because the
Endless Column is a well-known artwork and has a famous artist-Constantin
Brancusi. On the other hand, the column from Sydney looks like a copy of the
Romanian one and its has an unknown designer.
Taking everything into consideration, I could say that both columns
express a main idea. The connection between art andspirit: the height of the
columns suggests the ininity of the human thoughts.Nevertheless, there are
differences concerning the perspective of their designers.
