A Welcome From The Airport
Thank you to the entire Airport
team for the warm and gracious welcome. My first few
weeks as the Boise Airport
Director have been both informative and enjoyable. It has
been a pleasure meeting all
the employees and seeing first
hand the great work you are
doing on a daily basis. I have
had the privilege of being able
to tour many of the work areas
and I have met most of the
employees and tenants, although there is still more to
see and do.
In todays business and economic climate, it is imperative
that the Airport be proactive
and stretch beyond its traditional role as a resource for air
travel. The Airport is an economic engine for the entire
region and it is critical that we
leverage this important asset.
One of the key elements to
success in this area will be
linking the Airport more
closely with the City of Boise

and aligning the Airports

Goals and Objectives with the
Citys Strategic Plan.
This effort will require a renewed focus on the Airports
Strategic Plan which should
reflect the changing aviation
and business environment. I
expect our key strategies will
focus on our People, Airport
Business Development, Operational Excellence, as well and
Economic Development and
Community Partnerships. If
you have not been involved in
Strategic Planning before, it
may sound complicated but it
really is fairly straightforward.
In order to be successful, Strategic Plans involve people at
all levels within the organization. In the end, the Plan is
simply a map or a tool that
provides direction and helps
to measure the Airports progress.
There are many exciting projects and events happening

here. I look forward to being

part of this dynamic organization. I am still in the process of
meeting everyone and getting
settled in so if you see me out
and about, please stop me,
reintroduce yourself and say
hi. I look forward to working
with each of you and ensuring
the Airport is ready to meet
any challenges it may face in
the future.

FAA Inspection Time by Sarah Demory

The Boise Airport is Certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under Federal Aviation Regulation Part 139. Each
year an Airport Certification Inspector from the FAA's Northwest
Mountain Regional office in Seattle visits the airport for a comprehensive airport inspection. This year's inspection was April
11-13. The Airport Operations and Airfield Maintenance teams
in partnership with the Boise Police and Fire Departments prepared for this inspection for weeks. The FAA inspector inspected airfield markings, lighting, signs, safety areas, various
comprehensive airport inspection and training records, various
airport plans as well as the Boise Fire Department's Aircraft
Rescue and Firefighting team's emergency response times.
For further information about the FAR Part 139 Certification program at the Boise Airport please contact Sarah Demory at 208424-5602.

An entry canopy will also be built at the

Scope of work includes providing underground drainage for the rental car lot; all

Heads Up E-Cigarettes at the Airport

Its the latest technology in smoking and, at
least in the city of Boise, it is allowed in
public buildings. What is it? Its the E or
Electronic Cigarette.
Of the varieties new to the market, some
(like the one pictured here) look like the
real thing. Others look like the cigarette
holders Cruella de Ville would employ.
But Heads UPWhat you need to know is
that although they LOOK like a cigarette
prohibited in the terminal at BOIthese
ARE allowed in public places. The ECigarettes emit steam that represents

smoke. While still being evaluated for

health concerns to the user, there have
been no reports about effects for those in
proximity to the steam released from an Ecigarette.
You are not likely to see too many of the
new devices right away; the cost is prohibitive. And while they are currently allowed in public buildings, E-Cigarettes are
not allowed for use aboard U.S. commercial flights at this time.

E Cigarette, or Electronic Cigarette, is OK

to use at the airport, but is not allowed for
use on commercial aircraft.

Former Idaho Adjutant General honored at Gowen Field

Story by Col. Tim Marsano, Public Affairs Officer, Idaho National Guard
With Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch"
Otter and Maj. Gen. Sayler looking
on, retired Maj. Gen. Darrell V.
Manning addressed a crowd of
those gathered to pay tribute on
the occasion of a Gowen Field
street being re-named in his honor
on March 27th.
Manning served 41 years in uniform, retiring as Idaho Adjutant
General in 1995. He also served the
state of Idaho in a number of key
leadership positions at agencies

including the Idaho

Aeronautics Department, State Board of
Education, Idaho Department of Health and
Welfare, Division of
Financial Management,
Idaho Transportation
Department and State
Director of Selective
Service. He also served
one term in the Idaho
Senate and four terms

Airport Stats
The first few months passenger numbers for 2012 have been typical of what is still the norm at airports nationwide. Not unexpected, just slower to recover than everyone would like. Actually, the passenger count is pretty positive considering the seat
count reallocation by our airlines.
Below are the first three months of enplaned passengers for 2012
compared to the same period last year.

in the Idaho House of Representatives.

Gov. Otter has said, "few people in Idaho
history have had public service careers of
the length, breadth, quality or impact of
Gen. Manning's. He is a state treasure, and
one that I and generations of our citizens
have appreciated and revered."
"I appreciate this and I'm overwhelmed" by
the honor of the street re-naming, said
Manning. "Public service is its own reward." Fitting words from a great Idahoan.
