Introduction: When death occurs it is the duty of the family to make the necessary
arrangements for the burial of the deceased. There are certain legal requirements that must be
met and other procedures to be followed. The purpose of this guide is to describe these
procedures and provide a step-by-step guide to arranging a Janazah. Also provided are lists of
undertakers, kafan outlets, maqbaras, toekamandis, hearse services, as well as notes on the
performance of JanazahSalaah.
In the event of death the following need to be arranged:

Registration of death.

Arranging for a grave to be prepared at the Maqbarah.

Preparation of the Mayet for burial.

Registration of death: It is legal requirement (Act no 51 of 1992) that a death must be

officially registered. The required procedure is to have the notification of death form (Bl1663) completed. Depending on the circumstances of the death, this form can be completed
by the following people:
Death due to Natural Causes
If the death occurred at home, the doctor who has examined the body must complete the
relevant sections of the bl-1663 form and hand it to the funeral undertaker appointed to do the
funeral arrangements. Please ensure that the id documents of both the deceased as well the
informant are available. If the death occurred at a hospital, the doctor or nurse at the hospital
will complete the notification of death form (Bl-1663).

Death due to unnatural causes (accident, murder, etc.)

Irrespective of where the death occurred, the body has to go to the State mortuary will
complete the Notification of Death form (Bl1663). The completed form must be forwarded to
the home affairs office.
This can be done by handing the form:
1. Directly to the local home affairs
2. Local police station
3. To a registered undertaker
The above mentioned parties are authorized to issue a burial order (Bl-14), required to order a
grave at any of the cemeteries.
Arranging for a grave
In terms of the act no burial may take place unless authorized by way of a burial order (Bl14).
Preparing the mayet for burial
Obtain the Kafan and the Tanahari from either the burial society or Kafan outlets. Kafan
refers to the white material, cottonwool, campher, soap and rose water. Tanahari refers to the
planks, of which one must be inscribed with the deceaseds name(messang). Engage the
services of a ToekaMandi. Have ready at least 3 towels, 2 bed sheets, a bedspread, 2 pillow
cases a handkerchief (all preferably white).
Step-by-step procedure

Call doctor to verify death and complete form bl-1663.

Contact the imam and decide on a provisional time for the janazah.

Obtain a burial order from home affairs office, police station or registered undertaker.

Book a grave at one of the cemeteries.

Confirm time of Janazah and inform the community of the janazah.

Obtain the kafan.

Engage a toekamandi.

Obtain a katel and mandi table from one of the masjid.

If a hearse is hired the hearse will bring its own katel.
