The incomprehensibility of the nature of emotion

There is a great mystery surrounding the fundamental nature of emotion. Perhaps it is truly
semantic in its nature, and yet it seems so easily warped by the inuence of life. When one is exposed
to the world around one in a manner of technical perception, the softer, more uid feelings within one,
so hard to analytically quantify, tend to uctuate and respond in reaction to the sense perceptions
based on the surrounding world. I listened to John Rutters Gaelic Blessing. The recording was very
spiritually immersive, and inuenced my perceptions of the experience through its undenable
beauty. While this is unable to be measured, it seems to me to have very clear eects and I have clear
reactions to it.

Durkheim, the author writes that when we wish to learn how a society is divided up politically, in what
its divisions consist and the degree of solidarity that exists between them, it is not through physical
inspection and geographical observation that we may come to nd this out: such divisions are social,
although they may have some political basis. This situation reminds me very much of the condition of
emotion and its relationship to the nonphysical: it is a commonality to those who experience it; they
seem to be similar in their traits of reaction: just as a political bounding is set through consensus and
common agreement. In this, Durkheim has touched upon something profound, in the way that society
connects the lines tying it together and draws forth a collaborative truth in no way physical.

duty; in this he is touching upon a signicant trait of the way individuals interact with the world around
them. Through the assessment of ones duty, as society traditionally construed it, it can be concluded
that that concept has begun to fade throughout the systematization of the respect for and striving
towards freedom and equality.
In the awed yet famous Zimbardo experiment studying emotional responses in a prison
environment

/Zimbardo.pdf) (PDF), we saw the clear relationship between the settings and surroundings and their
perceptions and the emotional experiences of those people participating in the study. Likely this is
inevitable and a product of the way the collective society formed within this context draws forth their
conclusions about the world they are in. It seems that this is truly immeasurable, and yet it is a
signicant, substantial, concrete element of society.
