Master of Science in Education Speech-language Pathology

and Learning Disabilities
A2M080
Two-year Full-time
Department of Special Education and Counselling

Programme Aims and Objectives

The objectives of this MScESLPLD are:
(a) To provide graduate education to local and Mainland communities regarding normal
and disordered aspects of speech, language, hearing, communication and swallowing
with a particular focus for the facet of learning disabilities and the contexts in
educational settings.
(b) To establish a new academic discipline and become the regional centre of excellence
in the field.
(c) To diversify the Institutes programme offerings and provide high performance,
experiential learning opportunities to programme participants.
Upon successful completion of the MScESLPLD programme, graduates are expected to be
competent education practitioners or speech-language pathologists who are able to enhance
student learning through professional practices in managing speech, language and
communication disorders, and learning disabilities. They should have a mastery of
speech-language pathology and learning disabilities and achieved the following outcomes:
(a) Knowledge outcomes (through a defined sequence of coursework)
Graduates should be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- basic human communication and learning processes,
- the nature of speech, language, hearing, and communication disorders and
differences and learning disabilities
- the principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for people
with communication disorders and learning disabilities
- contemporary professional issues

(b) Skills outcomes (through specific practical experiences)

Graduates should be able to:
- combine appropriate educational and medical strategies to teach students with
different degrees of disorders in cognition, language and social communication
- conduct evaluation, intervention and interaction plans professionally, for
speech-language disorders, learning disabilities and the interweaving
complications among them
- tackle challenges faced by students who have various kinds of speech, language,
hearing and communication disorders, and learning disabilities
- integrate research principles into evidence-based practice
Occupational Outlook
The programme is designed to prepare participants for a wide variety of career
opportunities in the education arena:
(a) speech-language pathologists/therapists in schools to support educational needs of
students and provide professional input to teachers and the school, in terms of special
needs in speech, language, communication and learning disabilities;
(b) careers in educational services as college/university teachers and researchers
concerned with the study of speech, language and hearing disorders, and learning
disabilities;
(c) researchers or consultants concerned with the scientific study of the basic processes of
speech, language, hearing and learning.
Alternate career paths outside schools include various clinical settings such as hospitals,
offices of physicians or other health practitioners, nursing care facilities, home healthcare
services, individual and family services, medical clinics, outpatient care centres, child day
care centres, social service agencies, etc.
This programme is commissioned to service not only the population in Hong Kong but
also the wider Chinese-speaking communities in Mainland China and Southeast Asia,
particularly in the nearby Guangdong regions. Giving the growing concern about special
education needs and the rising demand for disability rehabilitation services, the
MScESLPLD will endow high employability to individual graduates.

Programme Structure
The curriculum of the MScESLPLD is closely modelled on the programme of study of the
American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA, www.asha.org). ASHA is the
professional and credentialing association for audiologists, speech-language pathologists
and scientists in the field. In the US, ASHA certification is recognized as a symbol of
professional training and competence for speech-language pathologists.
Nonetheless, the MScESLPLD offers more than just an ordinary training on
speech-language pathology. Instead of a medically-oriented study with emphasis on
practice in clinical settings only, the MScESLPLD is designed with a special focus on
supporting students in educational settings. The integration of the two closely-related
disciplines of speech-language pathology and learning disabilities makes this programme a
unique, innovative and comprehensive postgraduate training.
The MScESLPLD requires a total of 23 required courses / 72 cps of study. The curriculum
is designed to help participants build a scaffold of knowledge and experience that will
foster later independent practice. In summary, it can be divided into two parts:

experience. Participants will be exposed to proper skills and techniques through four
practicum courses. Other than the practicum courses for action and reflection, there is also
an in-depth study of advanced and research topics which foster critical thinking and
problem-solving. The capstone independent research project is the final piece of the study
for participants to demonstrate their mastery in speech-language pathology and learning
disabilities in educational contexts.
