30percentofchildrenattendedaschoolinwhichtheywereoffered
physicaleducationdaily.ThemajorityofstudentsintheUnitedStatesof
Americadonotengageinanyformofplannedphysicalactivityduringthe
schoolweek.
Currently,theU.S.DepartmentofHealthandHumanServicesguidelines
callforchildrentohaveaminimumof60minutesofintermittentphysical
activityperday.Themajorityofthe55.5millionAmericanstudents
currentlyinpreKto12thgradedonotengageinanyformofplanned
physicalactivityduringtheschoolweek.

Ironically,thefindingsofthisstudyindicatethatthegrowingemphasis
beingputonachievinghighscoresonstandardizedtestsbynot
givingstudentsabreaktoexercisemayactuallybeleadingtodecreased
academicperformance.

nonpharmaceuticalinterventionforchildrenwithADHD,aswellas
childrenwithautismspectrumdisorders(ASD).

communityhealthattheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbanaChampaignand
leadauthoronthecurrentMonographsissuesaid,
"Theseresultspointtotheimportantpotentialofapproaches
focusingonphysicalactivityforstrengtheningchildren's
brainhealthandeducationalattainment.Itisimportantfor
stategovernmentsandschooladministratorstoconsiderthis
evidenceandpromotephysicalactivityintheschoolsetting,
whichiswherechildrenspendmuchoftheirtime."
